F R A N K I C O L E T T INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENT CLASS OF 2020 PORTFOLIO

HELLO

This portfolio showcases solution-oriented Interior Design projects that best represent my journey as a designer.

Loving growing up in Florida, I decided to stay in the sunshine state for college. At Ringling College of Art and Design, I was lucky to be surrounded by creativity and all types of artists every day. I was able to experience all the different types of art media and hone my craft as a designer. While at RCAD, I served as secretary for the ASID Student Chapter and worked with my chapter to organize events. I was chosen by Interior Design faculty and a Board of Trustees to be the 2020 Trustee Scholar representative for the Interior Design Department. I am passionate about interior design because of the process of creating built environments that people enjoy and that benefit their health and wellness. After putting in time and effort, you have designed a product for people to enjoy, which is an endlessly rewarding feeling. The freedom of expression design provides, motivates me to make my projects as comprehensive as possible. Design can change the world and gives me the power to impact lives.

The constant flowing strides the skaters create, cut abstract patterns into the ice. Jeux De Glace Skating Rink takes the precise rhythmic patterns of the skater marks and brings them to life using light and form. Shape and movement help cultivate the juxtaposition of the delicate nature of the sport with the harsh surroundings of the Rocky Mountains. Located in Banff, Canada, this facility is ideal for both athletes and tourists alike, encouraging health and wellness as well as family togetherness and play.

SEASONS CHANGE... SO DO WE As the snow melts and ski trails become hiking ones, the ability to adapt to Banff, Canada’s ever-changing tourism needs is crucial. Jeux De Glace can convert from ice skating in the winter and fall into roller skating in the spring and summer. This flexible feature allows the rink able to be used all year round, providing a stable and consistent work environment for employees.

MOVING ART Installed under the ice is interactive technology that can track movement through weight sensors, which enhance the user experience. As skaters glide across the ice, guests in the store and lounge can watch the skater’s movements on the ice through projection mapping. This feature creates constant art that is engaging and is ever-changing. The store also features a custom light fixture that is an abstracted representation of a skater spinning in place. It shows how strong yet delicate the movements of figure skating is, making it a pure art form.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS As humans, we have a natural draw and connection to nature, and it heals and relaxes us. With the implementation of both indirect and direct use of biophilic theory, Jeux De Glace blends into the landscape of the natural world. Through the use of moveable architectural elements, such as operable doors and windows, guests can fully experience Banff in an indooroutdoor environment. The ability to fully be part of nature enhances the user experience and wellbeing.

For these high school students in Sarasota County, they were struggling to improve their standardized reading scores because of their current classroom environment. All design solutions are based on survey research from students and faculty and case studies. Implementing technology, flexible seating for collaboration, and color, the students feel that they have ownership of their space because it was designed with them in mind.

Education / Innovative classroom

Improving Student Experience These three classrooms were designed for the Sarasota Country School Board after they realized that their classrooms were hindering their learning environment. Through case studies, observational studies, in-person interviews, and research surveys, design solutions were made. It was important for the teachers to have extremely flexible seating, so it was essential to show the various floorplan layouts that were possible with the furniture. A consistent thread throughout all the classrooms was the ability for students to tack their work on the colorful wallboards, so they feel ownership of their space.

Children in foster care often face significant hardships because of their past. The trust issues that stem from experience causes the children to have a lack of self-confidence that affects them in every aspect of their lives. Often, they have trouble developing healthy relationships and succeeding in school and will fall into trouble, such as violence and drugs. The lack of self-esteem they face continues with them once they leave the foster care system. However, with the intervention of Poppy House, foster children will have a constant hub where they can go to receive mentorship, tutoring, and counseling. By providing a space that caters to the needs they have, they will feel welcomed, comfortable, and at home.

Theories Psycholoy of Arrangement The psychology of arrangement theory will be incorporated when defining spaces to create designated areas that, as a result, will be a more relaxing space. By using this theory in study and tutoring rooms, it will allow the child to feel more comfortable by having the tables which can help increase conversions. Studies show that children feel most comfortable when they will feel like they are a part of the group while still being able to hide. By also allowing for sightlines from each space into the next, the children can feel at ease by seeing everything around them.

P O LO V I S TA Building Type: Hospitality Square Footage: 6,000 SQFT Duration: 11 weeks Location: Salt Lake City, Utah Software Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop Skills Learned: Project branding, Space planning for hospitality

Based on the classic American designs of Ralph Lauren, this family-oriented ski lodge in Salt Lake City, Utah, is traditional yet modern. Using a bird’s nest as the concept, Polo Vista serves as a hub for all the members of the family to meet and be together. The hotel is designed to bring families together as they vacate their lives from everyday stress and spend quality time together. By implementing the use of line, symmetry, and harmony, the Polo Vista lodge will feel relaxing and comfy. Skiing is all about connecting with nature, so with the use of texture and scale, the concept of the nest will bring the feeling of Salt Lake City indoors.

As an American fashion company, Ralph Lauren has immense pride in the classic, traditional, and American style. Taking inspiration from the Ralph Lauren Winter Olympic uniforms that they have been designing since 2006, I was able to draw on an inspiration color pallet. While keeping with dark jewel tones like the traditional uniforms, using sustainable materials found locally in Salt Lake City was important. Natural stones mined in the area adorn the fireplace, as well as local wood, will be used when building the woven pattern on the reception desk, bar, and reading nest.

HOME DEPOT HUB Building Type: Pop-up Shops Square Footage: Flexible Duration: 8 weeks Location: Flexible Software Used: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop Skills Learned: International collaboration, Moveable design

When creating a healthy lifestyle for yourself and your family, you must focus on all areas of life that can improve your wellbeing. There are so many ways of enhancing your mental health and physical. Examples are getting outside and playing, working in your garden, eating well, recycling, to spending time with loved ones. Our goal for Home Depot is to show that you’re able to achieve a healthy, well-rounded life from products that are offered in stores. Building a Healthy Lifestyle as a concept will focus on the essential areas of safety education, family togetherness, communication skills, sustainability, and providing an overall stress-free shopping experience. The design for the new Home Depot will feature line, shape, repetition of pattern, and variety. It is showing to all its customers that Home Depot is so much more than your average home improvement store.

27

Pop-up shops / home depot hub The Garden Creation Space focuses on everything that you would need to create your dream garden from start to finish. It features 12 moveable stands that have LED display screens with information on them about creating your own garden. The space educates the public on proper tools, composting waste, recycling, and DIY garden projects they can do themselves. Creating a garden is something you can do as a family because it is exhilarating to be able to eat something that you helped cultivate.

28

Pop-up shops / home depot hub A lot of waste is produced when people buy products only to realize that they bought the wrong thing after they opened it. These opened packages cannot be resold in the store and result in a loss of profit for Home Depot as well as additional waste for the landfill. A solution to this problem is for guests to test out the products for their job before purchasing. With the use of virtual reality technology, we can put the guest into their projects and teach them which tools and equipment to buy. This also allows shoppers to figure out how to use the tools so that they can save time on their projects. For secure transportation, the cantilever works on a lever system that can pull it into itself for a more seamless design. When you push down on the structure, hidden casters pop up and then easily hideaway when you push down on display again.

For parents and guardians, this is an excellent opportunity to show children how to use simple tools without any risk. It’s a perfect building block of knowledge before starting a project together!

For generations, we use the stars as a way to guide us in our travels. Whether we are home in our backyard or far away in a foreign land, the stars are always a constant fixture in the sky. As if catching the stars, travelers will be lead through the space and back home to their loved ones. With the use of delicate lines and patterns, the night sky will come to life at all hours of the day in this New York train station.

31

product design / Catching the Stars

The light fixture is comprised of a metal mesh top that is secured into the base. The metal mesh is embedded with LED lights that twinkle and shine to give the appearance of stars captured right from the sky.

The base of the light has LED floodlights that face the floor around it to give the appearance that the solid base is floating. This feature also acts as wayfinding to help guide people through the space. Additionally, the fixture has Bluetooth speakers located in the base that can assist with announcements as well as providing travelers with soothing music.

The LED mesh is flexible and is attached to the wall; because of this, there is the ability to change the appearance of the mesh based on how it hangs. This feature will make the fixture a destination in the station as travelers will always go to see how the light is arranged now since their last visit to New York.

Using Adobe Photoshop for digital collages, graphics, and photo editing has been a hobby of mine since 2014. Once discovering the photo manipulation technique of turning photographs into watercolor painting, it changed how I used to software forever. There are so many endless options, and it is such a unique process that is extremely relaxing.
