The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2
The final instalment of The Hunger Games franchise is set to be released in November this year, with the film being shot two years ago in a number of locations including Atlanta, Berlin and Paris. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson were spotted filming battle scenes by residents at the apartment complex Espaces d’Abraxas in the Parisian suburb, Noisy-le-Grand. This is the same location where Terry Giliam’s 1985 film Brazil was shot.

We know you’re dying to find out where the latest films are being shot. So, to satisfy your need, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite new releases or upcoming films and their locations.
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD As far as breaks go in a film franchise, 30 years is a long period of time. The last instalment of the Mad Max series, Beyond Thunderdome, came out at the end of 1985, with Fury Road being announced in 2009. Starring Tom Hardy as the lead, filming didn’t begin until 2012 thanks to freak weather in the Australian Outback. After searching for a suitable alternative, Australia was left behind for the deserted plains of Namibia where the rain never falls. Fury Road is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland which sees Max meet Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman who wants to cross the desert. Captured by Immortan Joe’s gang, Furiosa becomes Max’s only hope of freedom. With the film’s premiere finally set to happen on May 14th this year at the 68th Cannes Film Festival, one of the film’s locations, the Namib Desert, is set to become even more popular for tourists.
Namibia, Africa London Has Fallen In the follow-up film to Olympus Has Fallen, London is in the spotlight with the story picking up at the funeral of the Prime Minister who died under suspicious circumstances.
London, England
In March, cast and crew were seen at one of London’s most beautiful buildings, Somerset House, where they were shooting scenes with Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart. Set to be released in October this year, the film will also include scenes shot in India and Bulgaria.
5 For the next film in the Jurassic Park franchise, director Colin Trevorrow has been shooting portions of Jurassic World at some of the original film’s locations in Hawaii.
Namib-Naukluft National Park extends over a large part of the desert and houses several wellknown visitor attractions in the area including the famous Sossusvlei area where a landscape has been created by white salt pans surrounding high orange sand dunes.

FILM FESTIVALS F
Palais des Festivals, Cannes
The highest award, Palme d’Or
Joel and Ethan Coen
estival de Cannes, known to many as the Cannes Film Festival, is an annual festival which is held in the small city of Cannes in the south of France every year. The festival is held in May at the Palais des Festivals. In the world of the undiscovered filmmakers, the festival is a godsend. The film festival is unique because anyone can submit a film and it has the opportuinity to be viewed by representatives of the international film industry. It previews new film releases covering a variety of genres, including documentaries from around the world. Cannes Film Festival was founded in 1946, making it the most prestigious and publicised film festival in the world. The significant Palais des Festivals is now constructed especially for this occasion. However, the festival has not always been held there. In 1949, the roof was unfinished and blew off during a storm and had to be held elsewhere. Also, the festival was not held in 1948 and 1950 due to budgetary problems. A range of awards are presented such as Palme d’Or du court métrage (Best Short Film), Prix d’interprétation feminine/masculine (Best Actress/Actor),
Prix de la mise en scène (Best Director) and the most prestigious award, Palme d’Or (Golden Palm). The Palme d’Or was introduced in 1955 by the organising committee and is the highest prize at the festival. Last year, the Turkish film Winter Sleep, directored by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, won the award. The last time the United Kingdom achieved this was in 2006 with the film The Wind That Shakes the Barley, directed by Ken Loach. This year is the 68th film festival and the committee have chosen brothers Joel and Ethan Coen to be the Presidents of the Jury. The Coen brothers are American directors, writers and producers who have been involved in the films Unbroken (2014), Gambit (2012), The Lady Killers (2004) and The Naked Man (1998). They will be joined by seven key figures in world cinema from different parts of the world. The countries include the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Spain, Mali, France and Mexico. The Jury is the set of five men and four women, who have the same voting rights. Their task will be to select the prizes for each film and the Palme d’or will be announced at the closing ceremony.
1946 Pictured above, Michèle Morgan, attends the first-ever Cannes Film Festival. She perfectly demonstrates fashion from the 1940’s. Mid-length skirts and dresses are what most women would wear on a everyday basis, whether it was casually or dressed up.
1966 The 60’s was the decade which broke many fashion traditions. Michael Caine, above, is pictured at the 20th Cannes festival with the actresses who were in the film Alfie. Women and men both began to wear more casual outfits to the fesitval.

When it comes to the red carpet, few events can compete with Cannes Film Festival. A-Listers arrive head to toe in extravagent gowns and suits. Now that it’s coming up to the 68th festival, On Location presents the fashion of the stars from 67 years. 08 | On Location | June 2015
We mostly hear about these film festivals when we see our favourite celebrities attending them in their gowns, but what actually goes on at these festivals? And who is involved? On Location has decided to tell you about the most prestigious film festivals in the world.
Cannes Film Festival 13th - 24th May, 2015
1982 The 35th festival saw another change in fashion. For men such as Romain Goupil and Steven Spielberg who are pictured above, perfectly show what many men wore to the festival in the 80’s. Smart suits with ties or bow ties were very popular for the festival in the evenings. www.totalfilmonlocation.blogspot.co.uk
1992 The 90’s saw the stars wearing formal gowns and suits. Former couple, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise [above], attend the 45th Cannes Festival and show the typical style from the 90’s. Black bow ties were still in fashion and this is still a running trend today.
2011 Angelina Jolie demonstrates the current fashion at Cannes Film Festival. Flawless, expensive and elegant gowns. Men will normally stick to black suits and white shirts whereas the women will wear glamorous dresses. The prestigous festival is relfected in their outfits. June 2015 | On Location | 09

he Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) is a fortnight of cinema screenings which annually takes place in June. The festival began in 1947, which makes it the world’s oldest continually running film festival. At the EIFF, they show both British and international films of all genres and lengths. At this year’s 69th festival, a total of 156 films from 47 countries are going to be screened and there will be 11 world premieres. The festival has been held at a range of venues such as Edinburgh’s Filmhouse, Fountainpark Cineworld, Edinburgh Festival Theatre and the Dominion Cinema.

There are now proposals for a new film house to be built. The designer Richard Murphy, plans for it to be located close to the existing one but it will increase audience capacity and will become the home to the festival for future events. TIFF was founded in 1976 by Bill Marshall, Henk Van der Kolk and Dusty Cohl, which similar to the Cannes and Edinburgh film festivals, makes it one of the most prestigious events in the world. Similar to Cannes; high profile stars and glamorous gowns make it one of the most publicised film festivals of today.
Powell Award for the Best British Feature Film will win £20,000 and the best International Film will win £10,000. Last year, the film lucky enough to win the Michael Powell award was Hide and Seek by Joanna Coates. However, the programme isn’t launched until the 27th of May so we don’t know who has been nominated just yet. However, keep an eye out and register for the programme launch at edfilmfest.org.uk. The festival features the best collections of films from around the world. However, when TIFF first began, Hollywood studios withdrew their submissions because they believed Toronto audiences would be too narrowminded for their films. Luckily in today’s festival, it has now grown and become one of Hollywood’s marketing machine. Unlike other film festival, TIFF is different. Normally, you’ll be familiar with stars winning awards like ‘Best Film’ or ‘Best Actor’, however, these do not exsit in Toronto. Instead, the biggest prize a film can win is the People’s Choice Award. This is given to a featurelength film that has the highest ratings, as voted by the TIFF committee. Last year, The Imitation Game, directed by Morten Tyldum, won the highest award.

EXTRAS
It was my perfect opportunity; meet the cast and be a part of my favourite TV show!

Extra Extra read all about it
How did you get into being an extra? Well I’m a massive Doctor Who fan, and I saw an advert for extras for the show near where I lived so I thought it was my perfect opportunity; meet the cast and be a part of my favourite TV show! What was the experience like? It was very different than what I imagined. The days are so long, and as an extra, for the majority you’re just waiting around until you’re needed. But it was really cool to see how everything works and how the show is filmed. It’s like getting to know the magician’s secrets!
Name: Grace Baker Gomez Biggest films: The Inbetweeners 2, Mr Selfridge and 24 (both TV series)
Sometimes there’s a few, or a few thousand, but it seems extras don’t get much credit in the film business. We thought we’d give them the spotlight and find out what it’s like to literally make up the numbers. They feed us the same as what the famous actors eat, so it has to be good!
What was your favourite part of being an extra? I personally like meeting the actors and hanging around with them, as well as getting to work with them. I got to meet Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy in Modern Family) and I was so excited. I called him over and started talking to him, telling him how he was my favourite character. I think he was a bit embarrassed and probably thought I was hair and makeup calling him over! The food is probably another one of my favourite things. They feed us the same as what the famous actors eat, so it has to be good!
ALMOST FAMOUS Even big stars have to start out somewhere. Here are five top actors who started off as extras...
Channing Tatum had a notable background role in War of the Worlds. You can also spot him in Ricky Martin’s She Bangs music video.
In the movie Field of Dreams, both Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are among the thousands of extras in the Fenway Park scene.
You’re not allowed to talk to the stars unless they say something to you first!
Name: Yvonne Haskett Biggest films: Dark Knight Rises, Hugo and Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation. How did you get into being an extra? I had heard about it over the years and thought it would be fun to do. My family and friends knew people who did it, then went online to look at some of the agencies websites and register. I registered with one initially, and now I’m with four others as it helps to get more offers of work. What’s your favourite part of the job? The costumes, as well as the hair and makeup, are amazing, it’s like being a little girl all over again! Also I love photography so watching all the scenes being set up and the lighting is really interesting. It’s great to see big stars and get the opportunity to work with them, though you’re not allowed to talk to them unless they say something to you first! Has anything funny happened on set while you’ve been working? On Hugo the days were so long with very early starts to get into costume/hair/ makeup and we filmed for several months so it was quite tiring. My friend and I were forever nodding off in between takes and there’s a very embarrassing photo [below] of the two of us fast asleep in our rather unglamorous costumes. Do you see yourself doing this in five years time? Very much so, as long as I can fit it in with my full time job - it’s not easy and the work is sporadic but I love it!
In the 1948 movie, Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! Marilyn Monroe had a one liner where she said hello to one of the main characters, as well as sharing a canoe with another actress.
Before he became the legend that is Jackie Chan, the actor was kicking butt as an extra in two Bruce Lee films. In the 1971 film Fists of Fury and the 1973 film, Enter the Dragon.

he island of Oahu in Hawaii proved perfect for the filming of Lost, the location was chosen due to the wide range of diverse filming locations available in close range. The television series got a lot for their money with various urban areas in and around Honolulu being used as stand-ins for locations around the world, including California, New York, Iowa, Miami, South Korea, Iraq, Nigeria, United Kingdom, Paris, Thailand, Berlin, Maldives, and Australia. However, they probably needed to save a few pennies because due to its large ensemble cast and the cost of filming primarily on location in Oahu, the series was one of the most expensive on television, with the pilot alone costing over $14 million.

he Hangover (2009) was filmed in Nevada and was directed by Todd Phillips and written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. The famous Las Vegas strip was the main location for Doug’s (Justin Bartha) stag duo where he was joined by Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Stu (Ed Helms). The Hangover’s most iconic location is Caesars Palace. However, the suite which was damaged in the film was built on a soundstage. Filming of Caesars Palace included the front desk, lobby, entrance drive, pools, corridors, elevators, and the roof.
- Stu’s (Ed Helms) missing tooth was not created with visual effects or prosthetics. Helms never had an adult incisor grow and he got a dental implant as a teenager which was removed for filming. - The Hangover was just filmed in 15 days in Nevada.

ex and the City (1998) was set and filmed in New York City over the hit TV show’s six seasons. It depicted the city in a way that had most of its viewers wishing they could follow in the footsteps of the four protagonists. Visiting New York City is already on most people’s bucket lists and this show has only helped make it one of the world’s ‘must see’ locations. Home of the fabulous foursome who remain inseparable throughout the show, New York is described as the fifth star in the series.
The show incorporated many New York City landmarks in its storyline, such as when Trey proposes to Charlotte outside the Tiffany’s store made famous by Breakfast at Tiffany’s. However, there are many locations that have become landmarks because of the show itself, such as Carrie’s stoop which has become the regular stop of many SATC tours.

t’s the new Nordic-style drama that has everyone gripped. Labelled the ‘Broadchurch of the Arctic’, Fortitude (2015) tells the tale of a tight-knit community that, up until the show is set, has never seen a violent crime. Fortitude is perhaps the most expensive television drama that Sky has ever made. With the total budget topping £25 million, the Icelandic town of Reyðarfjörður is a great backdrop for the show; although there’s virtually nothing to do other than look at the mountainous landscapes. The location, however, was inspired by Svalbard, Arctic Norway, which has plenty for visitors to see and do. Trainspotting Edinburgh, Scotland
T
rainspotting (1996) is a British comedy which has elements of crime and drama. Directed by Danny Boyle, the film focuses on the characters Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) [below] and Daniel Murphy (Ewen Bremner) who are heroin addicts in the late 1980’s in an economically depressed area of Edinburgh. Trainspotting exposes the extremes of urban poverty and the rich, higher class in Edinburgh. Despite the film being set in Scotland’s capital, the majority of scenes were actually filmed in Glasgow and the final scenes were shot in London.
SLEEP
If you want to stay on the same street as where Trainspotting was filmed on then we recommend that you stay on Princes Street. With over 95 hotels to choose from, you’re bound to find something which suits you. A classic and historic Georgian hotel is something which makes Princes Street iconic. The George Hotel is located in the middle of the street and is close to Edinburgh Castle, which makes it ideal if you’re planning on exploring the city centre. Stretching a mile long, it’s a perfect way to spend some of your time in Scotland’s capital. Whilst there, you will be able to see Edinburgh Castle. You should either have a walk to the castle or take a tour bus. Only £14, you can chose from the five bus tours which Edinburgh has to offer. The City Sightseeing Bus will take you around the older parts of the city and the castle, or how about the Bus and Boat Tour? Roman Holiday (1953) tells the tale of bored and sheltered princess who escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman while exploring the city. Paramount originally wanted to shoot the movie in Hollywood, however the director, William Wyler, refused, insisting that it must be shot on location. They finally agreed, but with a much lower budget. This meant that the movie would have to be in black and white, not the expected Technicolor, and Wyler would need to cast an unknown actress, who turned out to be Audrey Hepburn.

T
he Beach (2000) is an adventure film which was based on a novel written in 1996 by Alex Garland. Directed by Danny Boyle and adapted for the screen by John Hodge, The Beach takes place in the gorgeous geographical location of Kho Phi Phi Leh which has become one of Thailand’s most visited islands since the film was released. The island was initially chosen by location scouts because of its potential for a landscape transformation and not because of its natural beauty. Part of the film required the beach to be wide enough to play football, so a number of native trees were removed in order to achieve the desired look. The island is also not completely enclosed by boulders, hiding it from the sea as it appears in the film. There is in fact a gap between two boulders where you can enter and leave the island. In the film’s postproduction a fake boulder was superimposed between these boulders, blocking out the passage way and making the island seem completely protected from the outside world. 32 | On Location | June 2015

Finding Nemo Great Barrier Reef, Australia
k, bear with us, while it may be impossible to visit an animantion, it’s certainly possible to visit the inspiration. Animators and production crew for Finding Nemo (2003) were all exposed to visits to aquariums, diving stints, study sessions in front of Pixar’s own 25-gallon fish tank and even a series of in-house lectures from an ichthyologist (a fish scientist to you and me). And if you’re worried about damaging the coral reefs, in truth, the Great Barrier Reef is no more under pressure from overuse and global warming than any other dive spot. And the reef is as long as Italy, so it’s easy to avoid the busier spots and seek out those (vast) areas where the coral is spectacular.

Located on an old wharf, On the Inlet, in Cairns, is a well-established seafood restaurant couldn’t get much closer to the water; it even has a resident giant grouper fish that visits every evening. Nothing too sophisticated, but great value for money – try the local mud crabs, freshly shucked oysters or panfried coral trout.
DO
This is more of a don’t, but avoid the many day-trip cruises that depart from Cairns harbour each morning; it’s the same trip every day meaning more damaged coral and less fish. Head instead to less accessible areas like Lizard Island, the sea is so shallow you can walk straight off the beach with your snorkel and see the type of spectacle it’d take you hours to reach elsewhe re.

he first film from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, aired in 2001. It was directed by Peter Jackson and a screenplay was adapted by himself, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens from J.J.R Tolkein’s novel. The film was entirely shot throughout 20 different locations in New Zealand, but the story begins in Hobbiton which is the home of the Hobbits. The location had to be prepared a year before filming began in order to cultivate the crops and plants that give Hobbiton its onscreen appearance. Hobbiton was built on

Alexander Farm near Matamata, but was later returned to its natural state after filming The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The set was then rebuilt before the trilogy’s prequel The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey began production in 2011, and since then the area has been set up as a tourist destination for all the franchise lovers to visit. The finished tourist attraction was built to have 44 complete Hobbit holes including interiors, and the Green Dragon pub, allowing tourists to witness a completely majestic Hobbit experience.
Franchise Facts Two spare sets were built on most locations in case of rain because the shooting schedule was so tight. 1,400 eggs were used every day for the cast and crew in catering during filming. The scene shot outside the Black Gate was a military testing ground and had to be cleared of unexploded ammo before filming. 27 different copies of the book were used up in the process of writing the screenplay, between highlighting and note-taking. Bill the Pony is played by two people in a pantomime-style costume in some scenes. Sean Bean’s lengthy “One does not simply walk into Mordor” speech was given to him to learn the night before filming the scene and has now been made into an incredibly popular meme. Christopher Tolkien, who is the son of the book’s author, hates The Lord of the Rings films.
The Lord of the Rings set in Matamata, NewZealand, restored to look like ‘Hobbiton’ did in the films.
SLEEP
Matamata is a rural area of New Zealand with very little choice of where to spend the night. The majority of tourists are likely to travel into Matamata from a larger surrounding city, especially since the set tour may only take up one day of your stay in New Zealand. Hamilton is only a 40 minute drive from the movie set and has a variety of lodges that are of a high standard. Argent Motor Lodge is highly rated and having prices from only £68 a night on Booking.com, the saving made from your stay will balance out the time taken to get to Hobbiton. However, if you are hoping for a more luxurious experience, The Trinity Wharf in Tauranga is perfect. It is a contemporary hotel that is as far as Hamilton, but will give you the escape you need for £90 a night. www.totalfilmonlocation.blogspot.co.uk
EAT
The Shire’s Rest Café is also available on the set of the film if you are looking to relax during one of the set tours, or just fancy having a drink overlooking the whimsical scenery. The Cafe is also able to cater for special occasions or functions, such as parties or, as seen below, wedding receptions. LOTR fans celebrate their special day at the film set.
Sean Bean refused a helicopter ride to a set that was high in the mountains due to his fear of flying. So he hiked to the set in his full Boromir armour every day that they shot there.
DO
The obvious thing to do when visiting the Matamata is to go on one of the two hour long The Lord of the Rings set tours. The set tours are available from £57 and since it is located near a farm, there is an opportunity available to bottle feed and cuddle the lambs in the area. If you would like to venture out of Hobbiton, there are also Kayaking facilities nearby at the Boatshed Kayaks on Lake Karapiro. These are sheltered waters, and you will be guided by qualified instructors, making it a beautiful and safe experience. There are a variety of kayaking and stand up paddle board options to choose to go to the witness the beauty of the waterfalls by day or experience the unforgettable evening glow worm trip. Bond Beaches
In honour of Mr. Bond himself and those epic destinations in which he finds himself time after time, we’ve compiled our favourite beaches where Bond has emerged from the water, killed a bad guy, met a Bond girl (delete as appropriate) and generally lived the life we all wish was our own.
UK, Die Another Day
It may come as a surprise to know that Holywell Bay in Cornwall, provided the backdrop for a few of the beach scenes in Die Another Day. The golden beach played the role of the North Korean coast to perfection with Pierce Brosnan in the title role. Although an epic Bond battlefield for the movie, rest assured that the only battles taking place now are between the surfers as they try to catch the perfect wave.
THE BAHAMAS, Casino Royale
The Bahamas has been used as the setting for more Bond films that anywhere else (apart from the UK, of course), so you can tick off at least three Bond beaches during a visit to the golden island. Our pick has to be the Ocean Club on Paradise Island, where Daniel Craig confirmed his status as one of our favourite Bonds in Casino Royale. Not only was the One and Only Ocean Club the setting for Daniel Craig’s swimwear spectacle, it was also the location for several hotel scenes. So when night falls, make like 007 and head to one of the largest casinos in the Caribbean, vodka martini in hand (shaken not stirred, obviously).
PORTUGAL, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
JAMAICA, Dr. No
One of the top windsurfing spots in Europe, Praia do Guincho on Portugal’s western coast was forever preserved in Bond fans’ memories as the spot where George Lazenby pulls Bond girl, Diana Rigg, from the sea in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The beach is said to be unchanged since the film’s production, so expect unspoilt golden sands set against dramatic cliffs.
You know the scene – Ursula Andress, in all her white bikini-clad glory, glides out of the surf and shimmies onto the sugarwhite sand beach. It’s one of the most famous Bond moments ever, and if you fancy recreating the iconic scene from Bond’s first outing, Dr. No, then head to Jamaica’s idyllic northern shores and James Bond Beach (officially renamed after the film’s success). While you’re soaking up the Caribbean rays, pop along to the GoldenEye villas where Bond was born (in the mind of Ian Fleming, that is). Don’t forget that white bikini now. www.totalfilmonlocation.blogspot.co.uk

GOOD WILL HUNTING
BOSTON, USA
The park bench in Boston Public Garden was shown on our screens in the Oscar-winning film Good Will Hunting. The film, written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, is set in Boston and features a young man (Damon) who is a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist (Robin Williams) to find direction in his life. Although the film is set in Boston, a lot of filming took place in Canada, with the University of Toronto standing in for the interiors of MIT and Harvard University. When Robin Williams and Matt Damon were shooting at the scene on the bench in the Public Garden, in the movie it seems as though they’re the only people in the park, however, due to Williams being such a big movie star, there were at one point 3,000 people in the park with them watching that scene. After the death of Robin Williams in 2014, the bench became an impromptu memorial site for the actor with people leaving flowers, quotes and various items at the bench. A petition was created and passed around to erect a statue in Williams’ memory near the bench.

Now this one is a bit of a cheat, as the bench technically doesn’t exist. But before you get angry, hear us out! Chippewa Square, Savannah, the setting for the famous bench scene, does not actually have any benches on the outside of the square that faces the street, only inside the square. The bench was placed there for that scene only by the production team. Forrest Gump (1994) tells the story of Forrest (Tom Hanks), a simple man who was present at many historic moments, all while his true love Jenny eludes him. The park bench that Tom Hanks sat on for much of the movie was located in historic Savannah, Georgia. The fibreglass bench he sat on, since then, has been removed and placed into a museum to avoid being destroyed by bad weather, or

possibly stolen. To this day, the bench is held in Savannah History Museum. The location of the bench for the movie is still a popular spot for photographs. Five benches were actually made for the film. After filming ended, one went to the City of Savannah, one went to the Smithsonian, two went to Paramount Pictures and one went to a security guard who was on patrol while filming. Many offers have been made to buy the bench, the largest being $500,000, although he’s turned them down.
This giant bench is in Leeds and serves as a pit stop for shoppers. The bench was part of an interactive advert for a camera company and can seat 14 people.
If there was ever an underrated role in Hollywood, it is that of the bench. Often a scene for reflection or just a good ol’ chin wag, the humble bench has seen a few famous derrières over the years. We’ve rounded up Hollywood’s most famous to see what they’ve been up to since they found fame. Go on, take a seat.

MANHATTAN
This endearingly quirky movie is filmed largely around the un-touristy downtown district of LA, unlike the Hollywood we’re used to seeing. The bench included in the film is Tom’s (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) favourite place, and many tourists have recreated the scenes since the film’s release. However, you can’t visit the bench anymore, the sloped grassy expanse, called Angel’s Knoll, was fenced off and closed July 30, 2013 due to state cutbacks.
In the film, Augustus (Ansel Elgort) and Hazel (Shailene Woodley) travel to Amsterdam, and while there, have quite an emotional chat on a bench beside a canal. The actual bench went missing soon after filming took place, however it was returned a week later, with a spokesperson for the Amsterdam Film Commission confirming that it was the real bench. It’s covered with graffitti featuring quotes from the movie and the book.
Manhattan tells the story of a divorced television writer (Woody Allen) who falls in love with his best friend’s mistress. The bench scene that is featured in the movie was shot at the Queensboro Bridge in Manhattan and was done at 5am so that they could shoot the lights on the bridge. The production had to bring their own bench as there were no park benches. If you go there now, there is a little park with chairs overlooking the East River.

hen Jaws opened in June 1975, it was being shown on over 400 screens, a wide release for its time. But, the cinemas it was shown in were not the popular theatres, meaning Universal didn’t have much faith in the film doing well. Peter Benchley wrote Jaws, the novel, after reading about sport fisherman Frank Mundus’s capture of an enormous shark in 1964.
W
You’re gonna need a bigger cinema.
The book itself was a best-seller but the film was supposed to just be a quick summer popcorn movie. Instead, it ended up with three sequels, inspired theme park rides and was made into at least two musical adaptations. On top of those, three video games, an iPhone app and an officially licenced slot machine were all made as part of the Jaws franchise. It’s no surprise that at the time, Jaws became the highestgrossing film in history, a distinction held until Star Wars was released two years later. To date, the film has made $470.7 million (just over £300 million). Although it grossed a lot of money, Jaws was also extremely expensive to make. The film was given an estimated budget of $3.5 million (£2.26 million), however, the film ended up costing a total of $9 million (£5.82 million). It was also pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood

business model which revolves around blockbuster action and adventure films being released in the summer in thousands of theatres, supported by heavy advertising.
indecision and improvisation
Initially, director Stephen Spielberg was desperate for the job after becoming captivated with Benchley’s novel. However, he became reluctant to continue with Jaws as he feared it was too similar to his first film The Sugarland Express (1974) and didn’t want to become typecast as a truck and shark director. Spielberg was convinced to stay on the project and helped get actor-writer Carl Gottlieb to join the film. Much of the dialogue for the film was improvised by actors during their evening meals the night before a scene was to be shot. Roy Scheider, who played Chief Martin Brody, the film’s main protagonist, improvised the line “You’re gonna need a bigger boat”, so without this leniency, the film’s most notable line would have never existed.
a lucky fluke
Spielberg was forced to use the camera as the “shark” and film from the shark’s point of view for certain shots as the mechanical shark they were using spent most of the movie broken-down. Fans say this added to the chilling quality of the film and it would have been cheesy if they filmed as much of the shark as planned.
Above, Spielberg lines up for the infamous Dolly Zoom shot. Roy Scheider explained Steven used double camera movements, bringing the camera towards the famous face at the same time Brody is on a chair moving towards the camera. He did this to magnify the horror on the character’s face.

ust like with actors, there is an elite group of places that tend to show up from time to time. The impressive interiors and grounds of Chatsworth House have been used in several period dramas, major motion pictures as well as popular BBC documentaries. Iconic period films Pride and Prejudice (2005) and The Duchess (2008), which both star Keira Knightley as their leading lady, were shot in the grounds of Chatsworth House. The stately home was itself in The Duchess and was used as Pemberley, the residence of Mr. Darcy, in the film adaptation of the iconic Jane Austen novel. Chatsworth was also mentioned in the novel as one of the estates Elizabeth Bennet visits before
arriving at Pemberley. You may recognise the grand staircase and ceiling of the Painted Hall and the famous sculpture gallery. But, it has not only been used for its lavish interiors and period features. American horror film The Wolfman (2010), which stars Anthony Hopkins, features an unrecognisable Chatsworth House, after it was transformed over several months for the filming of the 1940’s classic. The film, directed by Joe Johnson, shows Chatsworth as a neglected horror scene with mud smeared windows, vines draped from the roof and crumbling statues in the grounds, which took 200 crew members to create. One of the final scenes shows the house on fire, but this was actually shot as a 24ft tall scale model set on fire.

The Making of
Harry Potter We take you behind the scenes at the world famous Warner Brothers Studio Tour
The hugely popular Harry Potter Studio Tour, which opened in June 2012, has introduced an exciting new feature for Potter fanatics around the world to experience. The behind-the-scenes tour has introduced a 20,000ft² expansion, including the original Hogwarts Express steam engine and a recreation of Platform 9 ¾.

eavesden was the home to the Harry Potter film series for over ten years. As J.K. Rowling was still writing the books while films were being shot, the production crew saved many of the iconic props, sets and costumes that have been seen in the films – on the off chance that they would be needed later on in the films. As filming wrapped on the final instalment of the series ‘Deathly Hallows Part 2’, these iconic props such as Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle were saved by the crew for the sentimental value they held. As many productions would have thrown away such treasures, the props used for the Harry Potter series became artefacts which were elaborate and incredibly unique to the story.
The Warner Bros. Studio Tour provides an opportunity for fans to explore the film-making first hand with the original props and costumes keeping the magic alive. With the tour celebrating its third anniversary this year, one very special piece of Harry Potter history has made its way back to its home in Levesden. The unveiling of the original Hogwarts Express steam engine and recreation of platform 9 ¾ has become a new permanent feature. A team reassembled ‘every inch’ of the platform; from its striking glass roof to the infamous luggage racks ready for its grand opening earlier this year. EXTRAS
Did You Mean?
We’ve all been there. You type something into Google, press search and suddenly there is that underlined blue phrase saying you’re wrong. Did you mean? Well now you mention it, maybe we did. Here are the top three locations people think are real when in actual fact, they’re completely made up.
Panem, The Hunger Games
To Hunger Games fans, Panem is the fictional nation in the Rocky Mountains which plays home to main protagonist Katniss Everdeen. Made up of the Capitol and 12 districts, the world is run under the dictatorship of President Snow where the law is harshly enforced. It’s a post-apocalyptic world based primarily in North America, however, it’s unknown to what extent Panem is based on America. We’re aware that the Capitol is situated in the Rocky Mountains, a major mountain range in Canada and North America, and the rocky peaks have served them well in war. Most film fanatics would happily live in the fictional world in their favourite film, but we think Hunger Games fans might give Panem a miss.
Springfield, The Simpsons As soon as you see those two cartoon clouds parting, you know exactly where you are; Springfield, home of The Simpsons. The show takes place in the fictional American town of Springfield in an unknown and impossible-to-determine U.S. state. Springfield is a common name for places in America, with it appearing in 22 states, but the creator Matt Groening said he named it after Springfield, Oregon. Homer, Marge, and the rest of the Simpsons clan have lived for the entirety of the show on Evergreen Terrace - incidentally, at the same address of Groening’s childhood home in Portland which was also an inspiration for the show’s setting. He added that he used an ambiguous name in the hope that everyone will think it’s their Springfield. And it’s safe to say they do.
Gotham City, Batman This fictional American city is best known to DC fans as the home of Batman in both the movie and comic book franchises. But Batman’s home wasn’t named Gotham straight away. Writer Bill Finger explained that the name Gotham was invented as writers wanted fans to believe that the city could be anywhere. Wayne Manor, Batman’s home was inspired in the films by British country house locations in Nottinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Gotham City has been described by as “New York below 14th Street, from SoHo to Greenwich Village, the Bowery, Little Italy, Chinatown, and the sinister areas around the base of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges”. Although we feel Gotham City must have some nice parts to it, otherwise who’d want to live there?
