Message from the CEO Frankston really is at its best in summer. Our beaches and parklands offer relief from the heat for locals and visitors. The event season is in full swing with The Waterfront Festival on the weekend of 10 and 11 February this year, to coincide with the Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay coming to Frankston. Show your colours and line the streets to support this event which will showcase Frankston City internationally. Council has also helped attract a number of new events locally, which are featured in this edition including the Australian Beach Games on the Australia Day weekend and the Stellar Short Film Festival. The Frankston Arts Centre (FAC) has launched their new program for 2018 showcasing why they have successfully increased attendance levels by more than 30,000 in the past year. The FAC is a great asset for our community hosting everything from school presentations and dance concerts to international musicians and nationally touring performances. Council offers a range of school holiday activities including some where people of all ages are welcome

– including the popular Guided Ranger walks. PARC continues to offer swimming lessons, which is so important to help support water safety. While summer is a perfect time to enjoy all our local activities, it is important to take care in the heat. When the temperature soars, reduce what you try to do. Seek refuge at one of our air-conditioned libraries. This is also bushfire season. Whether you’re staying close or travelling around the state, download the VicEmergency app which will warn you about fires, floods, storms and more. The new year will bring even more improvements in Frankston City with works pending on the new Frankston Train Station alongside further developments at Chisholm and a multitude of Council projects. 2018 will also be a state government election year and Council will continue to advocate on your behalf in the best interests of everyone in our community.
employment opportunities, to build a more prosperous future for all residents. Council will continue to advocate on behalf of the community and will work with all levels of government to secure positive outcomes for everyone.

Beaches for all to enjoy Summer hours for dogs on beaches
Dogs can enjoy Frankston and Seaford beaches before 9.30am and after 7.30pm until the end of March and must always be on-leash. Help keep our beaches beautiful by picking up after your dog.
Safe summer fun Heatwave health
More people have died during extreme heat than in any natural disaster in Australia. A hot summer is expected this year and people at most risk of heat stroke include young children, seniors, pregnant women, people with disabilities and people on certain medications. On days above 30°C stay safe, slow down and don’t try to do everything. If you or anyone you know feels unwell on a hot day call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24, or phone 000 in an emergency. Visit: betterhealth.vic.gov.au/heat
Children, pets and hot cars
On a 29 degree Celsius day a car can reach 44 degrees in just 10 minutes. Never leave children or pets unattended in cars.
Sun sense
Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. Have fun in the sun but remember to care for your skin. Shirt, sunscreen, hat, sunnies and shade are a great start. Book in for a mole scan for extra peace of mind. For a 'seeUV' app or advice about preventing skin cancer, visit: sunsmart.com.au
Beach report Watch around water
Children are only safe around water when you’re actively watching them and children aged under 5 must be within arm’s reach. Check your pool/ spa fence and gate and never prop the pool gate open. For a home pool safety app, pool party safety advice and more useful ideas visit: keepwatch.com.au
Water for wildlife
Leave a shallow dish of water in the shade, with some protection from predators, to help look after thirsty wildlife this summer. If you spot any local wildlife that need help, contact: AWARE 0412 433 727 or Animalia 0435 822 699.

RECYCLING PLASTIC IS EASY WITH THE SCRUNCH TEST
You can recycle all of us!
Is the plastic hard or soft? › Hard plastics such as yogurt tubs, biscuit trays and takeaway containers go in your yellow-lidded recycling bin
› Soft plastics that scrunch into a ball, such as plastic bags, go in the garbage bin or recycle them at a REDcycle drop-off point at most supermarkets
Ignore the symbols and numbers, they’re old news.
