Fransisca Dea Charity Agusta

HELLO THERE! I am an Interior Design senior graduating in May 2015 with a B.S. in Design at Arizona State University. I am excited to share some of my works and my design thinking. I am an intuitive learner that has strong passion in human-centered design. I see design as an integrated form of creative problem solving that is based from deep empathy for the people I design for. I always strive for innovative solutions that challenge how my design could enhance human well-being in ways we never imagined. I immerse myself in multidisciplinary endeavors from art, photography, graphic design, to social entrepreneurship and psychology. I believe that my multidisciplinary effort has helped me grow as a well-rounded designer. I am eager to learn and always look for opportunities to work with people with whom my design expertise can reach its fullest potential and create meaning for others.

Canyon on Mill is a mixed use building that consists of art gallery, cafe, retail, library, office, and artist studio. Canyon on Mill celebrates the history of Mill Avenue as a connection between Tempe, the supplier of farm goods, to the City of Phoenix. ‘Connection’ as the formal language of the architecture and interior aims to link people, events, nature, and street. Narrow path carving the voluminous structure strives to recreate the grand experience of walking through a canyon.

“As paint drips on a white canvas, the colorful architectural details strive to mimic the colorful and playful character of paint in a bright white interior. The reflection of color and light engages people to experience how to be inside the colors.” Benjamin Moore is one of the leading manufacturers of premium quality paints. The approach is by linking ‘the old’ (Tempe Hardware Building) with ‘the new’ (Benjamin Moore), where the old structure being opaque and textured while the new structure being transparent and sleek.

Inspired by the color cards system, the layout and the design are composed by grids to eliminate clutter and enhance the customer-friendly environment. The open plan and communal working space encourage interaction between customers; creating a sense of community within the space. The idea of dripping paint is interpreted in the architectural details of the colorful ceiling fixture and glass channel staircase. These elements are composed to create a poetic experience for every customer.

| Syrian Refugee Camp

The civil war in Syria has become the number one pressing issue with over 600 children entering the refugee camps every day. Lack of education, poor healthcare and emotional distress are making the children of Syria the ”Lost Generation”. Our approach is to focus on the immediate PTSD relief and future empowerment of the children as they hold the future of Syria. We formed Designtroop as “the servant of local passion.” We worked hard listening to the voices of the refugees and capturing what they really need. Most of the answers were simply: school, jumping rope, and chicken shawarma.

We developed 3 disruptive solutions that can be applied to any refugee camps. (1) Community Center, strategically built by refugees and volunteers, providing therapeutical environment and activities. (2) Happy Tents that brings impromptu joy in the camp. Its versatile and multifunctional for various fun activities. It’s easy to build using recycled materials from existing tents while employing local talents to build. (3) Design-Troop.org, a website that consists of 3 pages: Listen, Learn, and Act. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the ongoing war, and to act as the meeting point between the development inside the camp and volunteers/donators around the world.

A walk of memory. Using forced perspective inwards, the entrance invites people to the courtyard as a social hub that provides security and sense of community. The entrance is covered with Jasmine vines as an aromatherapy and cultural connection.

Providing a space to reflect and examine their own thinking about the traumas they have experienced.

Moving forward.

Playground as a play therapy.

Classrooms and hands-on learning programs that allow children to build their aspirations into reality. In a long term, it aims to empower young Syrians in decision making and drive their own future.
