Naxos, the quaint island where we met Julianna and learned how to cook some traditional Greek specialties, and the beautiful island of Santorini, where we stayed in the magnificent Erosantorini Estate, a five-bedroom estate that proves that Santorini is as romantic as it is beautiful. We also feature the extraordinary New York-based Ballet Hispánico in an article featuring their new dance program, Doña Perón. Rita Moreno is highlighted in our American Legends section, and for the soccer enthusiasts, we feature one of the world's best teams - Manchester United. BALLET HISPÁNICO
18
New York-based Ballet Hispánico has celebrated Latin culture through dance for over 50 years. With an innovative choreography by the internationally-renowned choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, the Ballet Hispanico premieres Doña Perón. It is an explosive portrait of Eva Perón, one of Latin America's most celebrated women in history. Her life has been the center of many books and movies and was made famous to the rest of the world by Andrew Lloyd Webber's theatrical phenomenal, "Evita." In this production, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa explores Evita's rise to fame from a simple dancer in Buenos Aires dance halls of the 1930s and becoming Argentina's first lady, all before her untimely death at age 33. New York-based Ballet Hispánico has celebrated Latin culture through dance for over 50 years. Doña Perón brings to light the extremes of power at the forefront of Evita's life. Her work as an activist and advocate for Argentina's women and the working-class raised skepticism as she indulged in the luxury of a highclass life. Was she a voice for the people or a deceitful actress? Annabelle Lopez Ochoa explores these diverging legacies and more in her first-ever, eveninglength work for Ballet Hispánico. When creating the choreography, Annabelle's inspiration was Eva Perón's persona as "… not a fairytale character, she's not a literary character. She's a real woman, and for me, it's interesting to put her on stage because she's difficult to pinpoint." - I want to give female dancers real roles, not always the nice roles. Women are complex, and it's nice to show all of these facets. I'm very grateful that I can put this woman, Evita Perón, on stage as a female choreographer." This brings to light the extremes of power at the forefront of Evita's life. Annabelle Lopez Ochoa explores these diverging legacies and more in her first-ever evening-length work for Ballet Hispánico. For more information visit: www.ballethispanico.org

JORDAN Kingdom of Time By Malorie Mackey When one refers to Jordan as a ‘Kingdom of Time,’there’s a lot of contextual truth to that statement. It’s hard to think of any civilization that has seen more rulers, conquests, trade, or culture than what is now the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is a place excessively rich in culture, as it’s situated conveniently at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, making it a prime center for trade amongst the old world. Due to its prime location, Jordan is not only a center for trade currently, but it has been throughout history. What is now the Kingdom of Jordan has been dated by archaeologists back to the Paleolithic Age, roughly 2 million years ago. This famous land has seen all types of civilizations as it was passed through the hands of every major Empire in that area throughout history. It started as a land of hunter - gatherers before the inhabitants settled down on more permanent farms. It is believed that the Hyksos changed the life of the people of Jordan forever in 1570 BCE with the introduction of horses, chariots, better irrigation systems, and more modern and effective systems of defense. It was under the rule, however, of the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut, one of the most important and revolutionary female rulers in history, when this area that is now Jordan flourished more peaceful and prosperously through trade. Because of her reign, it became known as the “glorious land flowing with milk and honey,” which you may recognize from the bible. In fact, Jordan was regularly referred to as this in the sacred text. After its major period of prosperity, Jordan passed through the metaphorical hands of the Persian Empire, the Roman Empire, and the Ottoman Empire (on top of countless other diverse civilizations). For each of them, due to its prime location between 2 continents and 3 countries, it remained a central trade hub. In fact, when reviewing this history of Jordan, it’s almost unbelievable how many rulers traded and conquered this land, making it a part of almost every famous ancient civilization. Even Alexander the Great founded cities within this area. Now, when one thinks of Jordan, however, it’s likely that the first thing that comes to mind is the River Jordan. This infamous body of water mentioned throughout hundreds of historical texts is how the Kingdom of Jordan got its name. The other thing that may come to mind is Petra, the famous archaeological site carved within sandstone cliffs. The word ‘Petra’ means “rock” in the Greek language, and in its prime, Petra attracted traders, artists, philosophers, craftsman, and, of course, conquerors alike. The most famous façade of Petra, the Treasury, the one that immediately comes to mind when we bring up the site, is actually a very small pocket in the cliffside thought to be either a tomb or a mausoleum. 26
In its most modern history, Jordan was under the control of the Ottomans who sided with Germany and the Central Powers during World War 1. The Arab Revolt of 1916 started in Jordan and weakened the Ottoman Empire as it struggled against the Allied Powers. In 1923, When they lost the war, Jordan became a mandate of the British empire. It finally won its freedom in 1946, following World War II. It was at this time it officially became known as the modern-day Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Its history of violence, evolution, and change was brought to a halt in the mid-20th century. In retrospect, it’s wild to think that the Jordan that we know today is well under 100 years old. 27
Being so naturally rooted in the history of the world’s most famous and prosperous empires and cultures as a trade hub, Jordan really does hold on to the secrets of time. It has seen civilizations come, go, change, and evolve since the Paleolithic Era. It witnessed the greatness’ of the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, the Egyptian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and quite literally, countless other civilizations. While we admire Petra when we think of Jordan today, it’s important to also acknowledge and reflect upon the rich, constantly changing hub of culture revolutionized there, making it a true Kingdom of Time.

SASSI DI MATERA If Caves Could Talk By Francisco Ruano

setting, fascinating history, and excellent cuisine. It is as beautiful as many cities in Italy but far less crowded. In 2019 Matera was named the European Capital of Culture, becoming a more mainstream touristic destination. Sassi di Matera can be visited in one day, however, a two-day visit will allow time to check the hidden cave churches and the hidden crypts that reveal a very long history. The Sassi is also known for its fantastic cuisine. Many hidden restaurants boast an authentic and robust culinary tradition, with dishes of great products that have remained intact over time. Expect thousand-years-old traditions handed down through generations, with genuine flavors of a simple, peasant cuisine inspired by the soil, agriculture, and pastoralism. The easiest way to reach Matera is from Bari Airport, which many airlines serve regularly. Another option is from Naples, even though it is less convenient. There are many hotel options for visitors to Matera; however, an excellent choice is to stay across the bridge from Sassi in the new 40 rooms and suite luxury hotel La Suite di Matera. The hotel offers modern decor, impeccable service, and a fantastic spa.
Sassi di Matera If Caves Could Talk By Francisco Ruano Matera is located in the Basilicata region, one of the less known Italian territories, squeezed between Puglia, Campania, and Calabria. The Sassi consists of two districts -Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, known for their ancient cave dwellings and for being the oldest inhabited city dating back to the Paleolithic period, or 9,000 years ago. Fodor has described the "Sassi" as "one of the unique landscapes in Europe". And in 1993, UNESCO named Sassi di Matera a World Heritage Site. In the latest James Bond movie, Sassi di Matera is featured in the first 15 minutes of the film. In the film, viewers are taken along the city's narrow streets, providing a glimpse of 44

COOKING WITH JULIANNA A Naxian Experience Photos and Text by Franz Buchhalter
88
Design Destinations Magazine Summer Issue 2022 Our second assignment was to create Tiropsomo, a soft and airy fried bread filled with savory, creamy feta cheese sprinkled with honey and sesame seeds. Our next dish was lamb, which we seasoned with spices, placed in a clay pot, and cooked in the oven.
Cooking with Julianna Julianna's kitchen is located in the Naxian hills, overlooking the vegetable and fruit tree gardens. A simple country kitchen that features a wood oven, it is surrounded by the fantastic hills of Naxos. During my visit to the island of Naxos, located just a short 45minute flight from Athens, I had the privilege of meeting Julianna, whose talent in preparing Greek specialties have made her famous. She was once featured in an episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown series.
Julianna was very patient with all of us and carefully explained in Greek, which was translated by Konstanino Karamanis, our wonderful host. Julianna kept saying “Bravo, Bravo! “ each time one of us completed our assigned task. Julianna reminded me of my grandmother, an excellent cook, and she taught me a few things.
Upon our arrival, we were met by Julianna and her daughter Maria, who several years ago had the idea of creating this experience to showcase her mother's culinary skills. Julianna had set the table with all the ingredients to make stuffed vegetables, baked lamb, zucchini fritters, and several wine bottles, which were finished by the end of our class. Our first assignment was to empty the tomatoes and eggplants to be later stuffed with rice and a delicious mixture of garlic, onions, and spices. The stuffed tomatoes and eggplants were placed in a clay pot, and then off they went into the brick oven.
While the vegetables and the lamb were cooking, we enjoyed the zucchini fritters and the Tiropsomos. They were followed by a traditional Greek salad, made from all ingredients from Julianna's carefully maintained-byher-husband's gardens. Next time you visit Greece, include a trip to Naxos, a different island, less congested, with beautiful sceneries and beautiful people.

Manchester United Football Club was first formed in 1878, albeit under a different name - Newton Heath LYR (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway). Little suspecting the impact they were about to have on the national, even global game, the workers in the railway yard at Newton Heath indulged their passion for association football with games against other departments of the LYR and other railway companies.
attack destroyed the main stand, dressing rooms, and offices. It was a devastating blow, but there would be optimism again around the famous old ground within a few years. The 1950s dawned with the break-up of Matt Busby's first successful United side - the 1948 FA Cupwinning team. After building one of the greatest teams in England, Matt Busby had to start all over again at the start of the 1960s. The Munich Air Disaster had robbed him and football of some of the era's greatest players. But once the great manager had recovered from his injuries, he set about forging another side to take the world by storm.
The words “Old Trafford” entered footballing folklore for the first time during the 1909/10 season. The land on which the stadium was built was bought by the Manchester Brewery Company (through John Henry Davies) and leased to the club. United has crowned League champions for the second time at the end of their first entire season at Old Trafford - 1910/1911. Manchester United returned to League football on 30 August 1919, following a four-year gap caused by the First World War. For that first match against Derby County, the team included many new faces. Only two of the men on duty had played in United's previous league game at the end of the 1914/15 season. The outbreak of the Second World War forced football to the very back of people's minds between 1939 and 1946. But even in the absence of League football, Old Trafford was still the focus of attention. On 11 March 1941, the stadium was bombed during a German air raid. The
Manchester United's attention turned to their managerial vacancy, with memories of the European Cup triumph beginning to fade. Sir Matt Busby had led the club to the promised land but retired, leaving big shoes to fill. United made a poor start to the 1980s, but Dave Sexton and his team recovered to win eight of their last ten league games in the 1979/80 campaign, finishing just two points behind Liverpool in the title race. Despite a solid start to the campaign, United's 2009/10 term contained a sting in the tail as Chelsea's late surge for the line ended the Reds' chances of winning a fourth successive title by a single point in a race that ran until the final day of the season.

An International Legend
Rita Moreno
Rita Moreno made history by winning the Oscar for Best
Supporting Actress in the 1958 film “West Side Story.” The film made Rita a household name. In 2021 at 90, once more appeared in Spielberg's remake of West Side Story. This time, she was a member of the cast and is also a producer. Rita is one of the selected actors who accomplished the rare feat of winning the four major North American entertainment awards- an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy, and a Tony. Rita is also the first Hispanic woman to win an Oscar for her portrayal of Anita in the 1958 film West Side Story. Her career has expanded more than seven decades, and today she is considered one of the most respected actors in Hollywood and around the world. She was born Rosita Dolores Alverío in Humacao, Puerto Rico on December 11, 1931. After her parent's divorce, Rita and her mother moved to New York City and started dance lessons. She later dubbed voices for American child stars in films released to Spanish-speaking countries. In 1945, at age 13, she made her Broadway debut in “Skydrift”. Her first big-screen appearance was in “So Young, So Bad” (1950). She was credited as Rosita Moreno in the credits, but soon after, she took Rita as her first name. Throughout her career, Rita appeared in many films, including “Singing in The Rain” and “The King and I,” and in television shows, most notable in 1970's “Electric Company.” When Stephen Spielberg ventured to remake West Side Story, Rita was cast as the storekeeper and is also credited as a producer.
