CONTRIB BILL SCOTT
Bill Scott is an international travel photographer based in Salt Lake City, USA who has visited over 100 countries. Whether it is a top tourist destination like the Maldives or somewhere off the beaten track such as Burundi, he finds there is always something fascinating to photograph. By building trust and a relationship with people Bill is able to put his subjects at ease and capture them in their normal routines and daily life. Although he often enjoys directing a subject to create an image, he says the real magic happens when a great story, beautiful light, and the opportunity to work like a fly on the wall all come together. There are places that impress you and others that inspire you. The colonial city of Antigua in Guatemala is both. Known for its many churches, convents, monasteries and art galleries, this small town was founded in the early 16th century on patterns inspired by the Italian Renaissance Baroque-style. Antigua became a bustling city and a religious center and become the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala under the Spanish Crown. The city was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1773 when most of the buildings were destroyed but most of the monuments have been preserved as ruins. The capital was later moved to the present location but Antigua maintained its historical importance and in 1944 was declared a National Monument and later declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Today Antigua has been mostly restored and the whole city is full of historic buildings, monuments, fountains and ruins. During the week it is a quiet and sleepy, and on the weekends is full of local tourists. Vendors fill the cobblestone streets, and local marimba bands play in the central park. Due to its location, the weather is always pleasant and strolling through the ruins is sure to take you back in time. The many restaurants, art galleries, textile shops and markets are a must for visitors, as are visits to the many historical sites like the first Theological University in the Americas - today a museum, or the Palace of the Captains-General. Or maybe you simply want to sit on one the street benches and watch people pass by. 16

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FARMERS IN MYANMAR PHOTOS BY BILL SCOTT

PASSION AND SEDUCTION
41
Flamenco is one of the most seductive expressions of dance. It is sensual, passionate, and dramatic. Flamenco can be best experienced in the region of Andalusia in southern Spain. First mentioned in literature in the 1700’s, it is a genre thought to have been grown out of Andalusian and Romanian music and dance styles and was associated with Gypsies. The Spanish word flamenco can mean flamingo, referring to the bird, as the dance moves resemble the moves made by the flamingo.
42
Hailing from southern Spain's outcast populations, flamenco dance and music drew early influences from the Greek and Roman, and later from Indian, Moorish, and Jewish cultures. With the arrival of the Moorish and Jewish populations to the Iberian peninsula centuries ago, Andalusia's already thriving music and dance inadvertently began extracting characteristics from the newly-arrived populations. The flamenco dance and music that we see today are the dazzling results of centuries of absorbing and flawlessly sewing together elements of this myriad of diverse cultures. A visit to Spain cannot be complete until you witness the National Ballet and their interpretation of flamenco. It is an experience that will leave you breathless. The passion and the sensuality are overwhelming. In Carlos Saura’s masterpiece, “Carmen,” a film released in 1970, is an interpretation of the classic opera of the same name told in the form of Flamenco. The scene in the tobacco mill is perhaps one of the best dance scenes ever made. Teatro Real de Madrid put on their version on stage in 2016. Here is a link to the scene of the Tobacco Mill. Enjoy it. https://youtu.be/t9vtbw5DDFU Photos courtesy of the National Ballet of Spain

Paraty is a small town surrounded by mountains on the Brazilian Costa Verde, between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The colonial town is testimony of the golden era of the Portuguese colonization and is jealously preserved by its residents. The town features 17th- and 18thcentury buildings dating to its time as a port during the Brazilian Gold Rush. Among its architectural landmarks is the waterfront Capela de Santa Rita, a whitewashed church built in 1722. The center of the town is remarkable not only for its exquisitely preserved, centuriesold architecture, but also for its lack of automobile traffic making it a delightful place to stroll and visit the many shops and unique dining venues.
During the summer, Paraty is crowded and lively brimming with Brazilian and foreign visitors. The town’s cosmopolitan flavor is further enhanced by the large number of artists, writers and chefs, both local and foreign, who have settled here and opened shops, galleries, and restaurants found in the many elegant white buildings adorned with fanciful multicolor borders and latticed windows which blend harmoniously with the natural beauty that envelops the town.
Dozens of pristine beaches are within a couple of hours of Paraty by boat or bus. Set amidst jutting peninsulas and secluded beaches, with a backdrop of steep, jungled mountains plunging into an island-studded bay, Paraty is one
of Brazil’s most appealing travel destinations, while inland, the Parque Nacional da Serra da Bocaina provides protection for a lush remnant of Mata Atlântica (Atlantic rainforest).

Chaotic, exciting, memorable, friendly and amazing are just a few ways to describe Vietnam. A country full of history and natural beauty. From the northern region where Hanoi and Ha Long Bay are, to the central area where Danang, Hoi An and Hue are located, to the south where Can Ranh and Hoi Chi Ming City stand, Vietnam is a place to discover and to immerse oneself into their culture. Stroll through the streets of Hanoi and bargain with the street vendors, or experience the chaotic Hoi Chi Ming City, once known as Saigon. Vietnam has something for everyone.

“The streets of Vienna are paved with culture, the streets of other cities with asphalt.” Karl Kraus Vienna is a city that embraces its history, which is so rich in art, music and culture. Some of the most famous composers of classical music called Vienna home, including Beethoven Mozart, Schubert and Brahms, as did artists like Klimt, Schiele, and Billy Wilder. However, the list of famous Viennese doesn't end with art, as the city gave the world many scientists like Sigmund Freud. Vienna’s history is relished and visitors can be immersed in it as the city offers many trails of its famous citizens’ work. Perhaps no other artist is more associated with Vienna than Gustav Klimt who lived and died in Vienna. His works of art are displayed in many museums around the city such as the Belvedere where the artist’s famous piece, “The Kiss” is on display. Another “must do” is to follow the footsteps of Vienna’s famous,
as seeing the room where Freud kept his famous couch at the Sigmund Freud Museum. Unfortunately the museum displays a copy of the original couch, but it is still fascinating. Pay your respects to the greats of classical music at their graves while visiting the Vienna Cemetery where the remains of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms rest. If you are a classical music fan, there are several venues where the music of Mozart or Schubert is performed. But no one can say they have truly visited Vienna until they hear a performance of the famous Vienna Boys’ Choir, known as the best boys’ choir in the world. With about 100 members in the choir, they perform around the world but if you are lucky, you may catch a p e r f o r m a n c e a t t h e Vi e n n a Hofmusikkapelle at the Holy Mass in the Homburg Chapel or at the MuTh concert hall in the Augarten.

Oia, previously known as Apano Meria, meaning “upper side", is sometimes referred to by locals as Pano Meria. The Ancient Greek Oia was one of the two harbors of ancient Thera and was located in the southeast of the island, where Kamari is now. Oia reached the peak of prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its economic prosperity was based on its merchant fleet, which plied trade in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially from Alexandria to Russia. The twostory captains' houses built on the highest part of the village are a reminder of the village's former affluence.
Oia has been the location of many films including the 1982 film Summer Lovers. and movies The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. This picturesque village was also featured in the opening sequences of the film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, starring Angelina Jolie.
Visitors enjoy the narrow streets and the white painted homes with blue doors and railing, however, there are other interesting findings that visitors should not miss such as Sigalas, the award winning winery and restaurant or the unique Mnemossyne Gallery that features a variety of fine art photography and jewelry, all astonishingly handmade by local artists. The gallery has a very harmonic atmosphere in an elegant cave house located only a few steps before the Castle and the famous sunset spot in Oia.
