Harmonizing Passions: Uniting Yoga and Global Exploration for Ultimate Wellness By Angela Atto Tepper

Design Destinations Magazine Wedding Issue 2023

Uniting Yoga and Global Exploration for Ultimate Wellness By Angela Atto Tepper In a high demand, fast-paced world where we can not seem to nd too much escape, it becomes incumbent upon us to nd essential levels of balance. Wellness resorts have never been more coveted and a necessary means of vitality. They offer more than just a luxurious escape from the norm; they provide a sanctuary where we can recharge our lives. I transitioned from being a dedicated 500-hour trained yoga instructor leading retreats that spanned the globe from Bali's serene landscapes, the breathtaking vistas of the Amal Coast, and the tranquil shores of the Cote D’Azur to become the founder of AZA Luxury Travel, an agency dedicated to designing exceptional experiences for the discerning traveler. There are few pursuits as deeply ful lling as these two passions of mine. The blending of yoga and travel felt like an organic evolution where art and exploration intertwined perfectly. Why am I so passionate about properties and destinations that have a strong focus on wellness? This odyssey is more than just lavish experiences; it is an invitation to embrace the unknown, escaping daily stress, putting our well-being into focus, and discovering new things about ourselves that are facilitated by

being in new surroundings. My mission: to handcraft itineraries that amalgamate the art of travel with the science of well-being. Properties like Zulal Wellness Resort, Pimalai, Nana, and Alma stand as luminaries in the realm of wellness-oriented travel. These sanctuaries, nestled in some of the world's most captivating locales, radiate a palpable aura of rejuvenation. Their commitment to the harmonious interplay of mind, body, and soul is beyond palpable. As much as I enjoy constructing adventurous and explorative trips that involve a substantial amount of sightseeing and cultural enrichment, I often nd myself urging travel clients to set aside time for wellness resort experiences, where they become the captivating center of attention. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than creating journeys that enrich our passports and our souls. As I re ect on my path, I clearly recognize the symbiotic relationship between mindfulness and immersive travel exploration. Just as the practice of yoga unveils inner truths, travel promotes a kaleidoscope of experiences that enrich our existence.

THE FIVE PILLARS

S OF WELLNESS S OF WELLNESS

SPIRITUALITY

Spiritual wellness means having personal values and beliefs and acting compassionately following those values. Personal values and opinions may change throughout a lifetime, taking shape through the influence of relationships, events, and unique experiences. While focusing on physical or emotional wellness is common, spiritual wellness is usually the least often discussed—through a crucial component of holistic health. Some research shows a connection between your beliefs and your sense of well-being. Positive views, comfort, and strength gained from religion, meditation, and prayer can contribute to well-being. It may even promote healing. Improving your spiritual health may not cure an illness, but may help you feel better. Spiritual well-being is often a misunderstood concept. It refers not to any particular religious or spiritual practice or ideology but the human need for meaning, purpose, and connection to something greater than ourselves. Spirituality involves exploring specific universal themes – love, compassion, altruism, life after death, wisdom, and truth, with the knowledge that some people, such as saints or enlightened individuals, have achieved and manifested higher levels of development than the ordinary person. Spiritual wellness acknowledges our search for deeper meaning in life. When we're spiritually healthy, we feel more connected to a higher power and those around us. We have more clarity when making everyday choices, and our actions become more consistent with our beliefs and values.

MINDSET Mindset Wellness is a plant-based mood enhancement system designed to give you a choice in how you want to feel. Our unique, personalized approach to wellness gives you the tools to choose your mood or mindset. A mindset is a series of self-perceptions or beliefs people hold about themselves. These determine behavior, outlook, and mental attitude. For example, believing you are either 'intelligent' or 'unintelligent'. Mindsets can impact your outcomes by determining how you think, feel, and even physiologically respond to some situations. It affects not just your mental health but every area of your life, including your physical health. A positive mindset makes you more likely to take care of yourself and make healthy choices. You're more likely to exercise, eat nutritious foods, and get enough sleep. Four ways to develop a wellness mindset 1. Get a minimum of seven hours of sleep every night. 2. Find ways to reduce stress. 3. Love yourself and take care of your body and mind. 4. Try to do things that make you happy.

NUTIRITION

Nutritional wellness is the celebration and education of cooking and healthy food choices. Nutrition directly impacts mental health; it contributes to the quality of life by reducing the risk of being overweight and protecting the body from diseases and chronic conditions like type-2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some form of cancer. In Summary, it contributes to a better quality of life. Here are just a few ways that diet quality relates to each wellness dimension. Physical - This is the most apparent dimension when eating healthfully. Eating high-quality foods is a way to care for our bodies to optimize health now and in the future. Nutrition is directly related to one's overall well-being pivotally. What we put into our bodies directly affects the maintenance of our wellness, fluctuations in our health, and our ability to get well again after a sedentary lifestyle or illness. Studies show that the more fruits and vegetables people eat, the happier, less depressed, and more satisfied they become.

LIFESTYLE Lifestyle wellness encompasses everything you do to engage in an optimal lifestyle for you – at every age and stage of your life. A healthy lifestyle focuses on one's mental, behavioral, and body states, which are directly aligned to treat and prevent chronic diseases and long-term illnesses. Feeling good about yourself and caring for your health are essential for your self-esteem and self-image. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is doing what is suitable for your body. Several critical areas of your lifestyle are considered dimensions of overall Wellness. They include social connectedness, exercise, nutrition, sleep, and mindfulness. Each one impacts your physical and mental health—a balanced diet, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco and drugs, and getting plenty of rest. Our bodies are like machines that require a balance of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water to stay in good working order. Get the balance wrong, and your health can suffer. A good lifestyle is reflected in how we behave in our

PURPOSE

Understanding our purpose comes from identifying what motivates us, what makes us happy, and what we need to help us feel important and valued. Defining our passions, strengths, and values allows us to discover our personal, unique purpose. A sense of purpose gives us the foundation for a healthy approach to life. When our world feels meaningful, and we feel like we are achieving our goals, we're empowered to take greater responsibility for our lives. And that, in turn, supports our well-being.

WATER

The Magic Liquid

Design Destinations Magazine Wedding Issue 2023

WATER The Magic Liquid Oxford Dictionary defines Water as a liquid without color, smell, or taste that falls as rain in lakes, rivers, and seas and is used for drinking. Water is the name given to the chemical compound of oxygen and hydrogen with the chemical symbol H₂O. Water is your body's principal chemical component, making up about 50% to 70% of your body weight. Your body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work correctly. We lose water daily through our breath, sweat, urine, and bowel movements. For your body to function correctly, you must replenish its water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water. So, how much water does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? According to the Mayo Clinic, adult men need an average of 15.5 cups of water daily, and women approximately 11.5 cups daily. It is important to note that humans get about 20% of their daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the rest from drinks. We all heard that we should drink at least eight glasses of water daily, which may be a good goal; however, some people may need to modify if they exercise. Remember, if you sweat or live in a humid environment, you may need more than the recommended eight glasses daily. There are signs of lack of enough water that you should pay attention to, for example, if you are constantly thirsty or your urine is colorless or light yellow. Water is truly a magic liquid as it helps your body: Keep an average temperature. Lubricate and cushion joints. Protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues. Water helps your brain function optimally. It keeps your cardiovascular system healthy. Water may help fill you up, especially if you drink it before eating, enabling you to maintain a healthy weight. In conclusion. Water is truly the magical liquid.

FINDING ME TIME By Maya Buchhalter Finding time for ourselves in today's world is no easy feat; between work and all of life's demands, it can almost feel like "one more thing to do." Nowadays, we often blur the lines of what self-care means with endless Barry's Bootcamp classes, açaí bowls, and guided sound baths. However, prioritizing self-care doesn't have to be as elusive or intense as we make it to be. In its simplest form, self-care means being aware of your basic physiological and emotional needs. I like to look at self-care in relation to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Abraham Maslow was one of the most influential American psychologists of the 20th century. A pioneer for his time, he stayed away from the popularization of psychoanalysis and behaviorism at the time and developed humanistic psychology. With his Hierarchy of Needs model, he proposed that to meet our psychological needs and feel fulfilled in life; we must meet our basic physiological needs like sleep, food, water, security, and safety, with selfactualization or personal growth being the overall goal. With this in mind, I find it helpful to check in with myself throughout a busy day as an NYC nurse and take inventory on the basics: Did I drink enough water? Did I eat adequately? How was my sleep? Creating pockets of "me time" throughout my day is essential to preventing burnout and isn't as complicated as you may think. Here are some simple tips with the highest return on investment from a psych nurse! Hydration: To start my day, I always have a glass of water, yes, even before coffee. Our cortisol (stress hormone)

levels are highest in the mornings when we wake up. Rehydrating our body after 8 hours of sleep may sound obvious, but most of us grab our coffee and go, bypassing our physiological need for proper hydration with water. Think Before You Drink: Coffee can motivate waking up some days, but delaying coffee by even an hour or two a day helps reduce cortisol levels and sets you up for a less stressful start. Drinking coffee on top of a stressed system as soon as you wake is like adding fuel to the fire, and you won't get all the desired positive effects. Eating Adequately: I used to be the person who proudly skipped breakfast since I was never hungry in the mornings. However, reduced morning appetite may be your body's first warning sign of elevated cortisol levels. I'll grab a banana or yogurt when I need more time or I am not that hungry. If time allows, I'll have something more balanced and nutritious, like eggs, toast, chia pudding, and fruit. To set myself up for success during the day, I pack lunch, ensuring I'm hitting all my macronutrients like carbs, protein, healthy fat, and fiber. In a pinch, I always have a fun and healthy snack in my bag or desk, like a protein bar or chocolate-covered almonds! Regulate your Circadian Rhythm: This may sound complex, but prioritizing sleep is as simple. Making sure you get adequate and restful sleep is so important. Lack of sleep is one of the biggest detriments to our health and a major driving force of stress on our body. Trying to stay a strict bedtime and sticking to it is essential to self-care. Reducing blue-light exposure at night and in the morning when you

Design Destinations Magazine Wedding Issue 2023 wake aids in this process as well. Getting morning sun with a 15-minute walk in the morning gets my blood circulating and regulates my circadian rhythm.

building connections in relationships. We need help getting somewhere; we do it through the community. So, express genuine gratitude as much as possible throughout your day.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Because we never know how our day may go, starting the day with vagus nerve stimulation at home or once you're in the office is easy and effective. Our vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve. It plays a large part in our parasympathetic system, which is the system that allows us to "rest and digest," versus our sympathetic system, which drives our "fight or flight" response in stressful situations. Vagus nerve stimulation can be as simple as 2 minutes of deep breathing exercises (making sure to breathe in from your stomach versus your chest), humming, singing, or having a good laugh!

Practicing Radical Rest: Whoever thought rest would be considered radical? However, in a society that pushes us to believe that work comes first above enjoying life, rest can feel like a radical choice. This can mean canceling plans to stay home with your dog and putting on your favorite show, asking for help on a work project so you can get home in time to read a book at the park, listen to music in nature, or practice mindfulness exercises. Rest is meant to be restorative; finding an activity that pours into your cup is essential to reducing the impact of daily stress.

Expressing Gratitude to Others: I know this doesn't feel very self-care-y, emphasizing the self part, but studies show that our happiness and resilience go up when we express gratitude for people in our lives. This could be because it taps into Maslow's need for belonging and

In conclusion, prioritizing yourself will always be the best form of self-care you can do. Remember, you don't have to pick up all these habits; focus on one and see how you feel. They shouldn't feel exhausted; they should feel empowered.

THE POWER OF BALANCED NUTRITION

When choosing a balanced diet, we must incorporate fiber, water, macro, and micronutrients combined with regular physical activity to help us maintain a healthy weight. When we include enough vegetables, fruits, and nonsaturated fat foods into our diet, our bodies respond positively and always avoid overeating. A well-balanced diet offers many benefits, including weight management, enhancing our energy, improving our immune system, preventing chronic diseases like type-2 diabetes, contributing to better mental health, and helping us with good digestion and gut health. Here are some tips for adopting a balanced diet. Your plate should feature half of a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits at each meal. This will help you consume enough vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Choose whole grains over refined grains like white rice and white bread. Please select suitable protein sources like poultry, fish, beans, lentils, and tofu over red meats. They provide unsaturated fat and give you amino acids to maintain muscle mass. If possible, avoid added sugars and processed foods. Instead of granulated sugar, opt for natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup. Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated supports good digestion. You should drink at least eight glasses of 8 ounces of water daily and increase this amount whenever you increase your physical activity. Monitor your meal portion and avoid overeating. Remember not to eat with your eyes but listen to your body and fullness cues. Planning your everyday snacks will help you choose the right ones and avoid eating the not-so-good ones.

Design Destinations Magazine Wedding Issue 2023

We all know the importance of eating healthy, but in today's world, when everything is fast, managing a healthy diet can be difficult as we can fall into unhealthy eating habits. However, it is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being, and a balanced diet provides the necessary nutrients that our body needs to function optimally. It supports the immune system, which helps to prevent chronic diseases.

TAIM

PAST TRADITION MEETS FUTURE HEALTH Traditional Arabic & Islamic Medicine follows a holistic path to wellness that embodies conventional healing practices and herbal remedies with lifestyle guidance in nutrition, movement, and rest. Bringing this unique and beautiful ancient philosophy into a contemporary context. For generations, humanity has benefitted from forward-looking inventions and technologies. Yet, if we look back to our traditions, we find much to support our growth on a personal level—the benefits of Traditional Arabic & Islamic Medicine (TAIM). The ancient lifestyle philosophy from this world nurtures our health and spiritual wellbeing with nutrition, mind-body therapies, physical movement, herbal medicine, and connection with nature.

theoretical principles of medicine into a comprehensive system of medicine.

The origins of TAIM are the culmination of GraecoRoman, Chinese, Persian, and Ayurvedic theories and practices). Sources of Islamic medicine can be traced back to the beginning of the Islamic civilization in the 7th century when Islamic scholars and physicians expanded earlier medical sciences with their discoveries and amplified preexisting

Dietary practices include using specific foods, such as honey, for its traditional and prophetic indications. Honey’s medicinal use spans many concerns, including promoting circulation, stomach and intestinal pain, and colic as a topical antibiotic. Other dietary practices include observing a fast, considered the oldest form of natural healing.

Approximately 250 plant species are currently used in traditional Arabic medicine to treat various diseases]. Medicinal plants are used in the form of herbal teas, syrups, infusions, and ointments. One commonly used herb, Nigella sativa, also known as black seed, is traditionally used as an herb and oil to prevent and cure many ailments in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The black seed is also revered in prophetic tradition for its healing ability. Indications for black seed include respiratory health, immune system support, and stomach and intestinal health.
