SPRING2017

Get your garden blossoming! If you have been neglecting your garden or lawn in the cooler months, now is the perfect time to start preparing your outdoor spaces so you can enjoy a beautiful garden this spring. 1. Clean up and shape up! Exposure to the elements such as rain and the cold over the cooler months may have left your garden with lots of branches and plant debris. Now is the ideal time to get your tools ready to start the clean-up, especially if you have deciduous trees which shed their leaves annually. To clean your tools easily use soapy water or soak in a mild vinegar and water solution if there’s any rust on them.

LOOKING TO START A VEGGIE PATCH? WHY NOT PLANT PEAS, MINT, CARROTS AND OREGANO!

2. Feed and nourish your soil To ensure your soil wakes up from the dormant cold, it may be a good idea to replenish its nutrients with compost or manure. Start by turning over your soil and raking it out to clear any weeds. The next step is to add compost and mix it in well keeping in mind you want to let the compost soak in for a couple of weeks to avoid burning the roots of any new plants. 3. Plan ahead and seek planting recommendations If you are new to being a green thumb, your local nursery will be a wealth of knowledge when it comes to seasonal planting. You may want to alternate your garden bed with different flowering plants or veggies, your garden possibilities are endless. 4. The finishing touches Once you have replanted, don’t forget to add mulch to your garden. It does wonderful things to your garden beds such as conserve water, cools the plant roots and feeds the soil which will really help as the sun gets hotter.

Get to know your yoga instructor: Robyn Raneng Tell us a bit about yourself - why you love teaching yoga therapy and how has it influenced your life? I love watching people come alive with the joy and satisfaction of achieving where there was doubt of ever moving towards positive change with their health and wellness goals. This is why I love what I do! My life’s journey began in Nursing and Midwifery and through that time I observed many issues that could have been prevented through a healthy lifestyle. My desire has always been to help lead people to a life free of disease and illness. Expanding on my love for yoga and yoga teaching training, I completed a three year Diploma in Yoga Therapy. The classes at Cova are a general yoga class, not yoga therapy, although some of the knowledge is infused through the lesson where possible, increasing the overall benefit to those attending. Have you seen yoga transform people’s lives? If so, how? Yes, definitely from a holistic viewpoint in many different aspects: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Physically from a relief from sore muscles, emotionally feeling more relaxed with mental clarity and focus needed for the day and from a preventative viewpoint, yoga has brought more awareness to particular needs of the state of the mind and body. What’s the most rewarding part of being our resident Live Life Get Active yoga teacher? The natural environment is very therapeutic! The students are friendly and committed to their health and wellbeing and to watch them leave in a state of calm connected energy brings me great satisfaction.

Mindfulness tips to help with busy lives 1. Gratitude: Feel the feeling of gratitude for being able to live in such beautiful surroundings. You can do this as you wake up or during your yoga practice. 2. Conscious breathing: Take a moment out of your busy day and simply connect to the natural flow of your breath. Take note of how your body and mind are feeling and connect as you breathe in and out slowly. 3. Dealing with self doubt or negative thoughts: Is your self chatter getting in the way of moving forward or getting work done? Pause; notice the conversation you are having with yourself - is it positive or negative? Let go of thoughts that are not helpful and move forward with the ones that are.

“The opportunity to teach yoga at Cova, which has this fantastic environment with its beautiful surroundings, ends the week in a relaxed state of being for all!” - Robyn
