More at your library... Making Checkout Easier at FVRL! Did you know that when a library staff member checks out a customer’s books about 80% of the transaction involves staff pushing and pulling a book back and forth across a desk, lining it up with a barcode and scanning it? That doesn’t leave a lot of time for us to interact with you, the customer! In the past five years, the use of the library has increased exponentially. Checkout, renewals and holds requests are now at all-time highs. To handle such high use, FVRL is continually exploring smarter and more efficient ways to check materials in and out, and move holds through the system. The use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology will make it possible to achieve all these goals! We are beginning to place RFID tags in our collection. This is being done to increase staff efficiency and make it easier for you to use the library. We will be tagging our entire collection of 1.3 million items over the next few years—the collection at our new Pitt Meadows Library collection has already been completed and the new Abbotsford Collegiate library is next. As we change to RFID at our libraries customers can expect faster checkout times along with speedier returns and holds processing.

Small Business Week Celebrating Canadian Entrepreneurship Small and medium-sized businesses are the engine of the Canadian economy. They make up 99.8% of all companies and employ over 60% of private sector workers. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are invited to celebrate Small Business Week (October 14 to 20) by attending a seminar on importing commercial goods into Canada. The seminars, hosted at the library, will be presented by a Canadian Border Services Agency senior trade officer.

History of the Yarrow Library The Yarrow Library celebrates 10 years in its current location in October. Its rich history reaches back 65 years to 1947 when Julia and Jack Wittenberg opened a two-shelf library in their Jewelry and Watch Repair shop. Prior to that, the area’s library service was provided by periodical visits from the FVRL Book Van. The Wittenberg’s vision of creating more readers within the community was realized as the tiny library developed into a community gathering place. The Yarrow Library eventually expanded and reopened October 1, 1977 in the Yarrow Community Centre with Community Librarian Gail Berger at the helm. Both the centre and the library underwent extensive renovations in 2001. Over the years much has changed about the Yarrow Library including location, collection and resources offered but the heart of the library still embodies the Wittenberg’s vision of bringing the community together to celebrate reading. The Strength of the System The FVRL system is a partnership between government, library staff and the public. It is a framework that allows municipalities to share resources and offer services in a way that is efficient and cost effective. The FVRL system celebrates the special character of each library in each community. At the same time, each is part of a wider network that links our customers with information and resources that are both local and global in scope. In this way, we are fulfilling our mandate — to connect people to the world of information and ideas.

Give back to the Library Libraries grow when communities and individuals come together. Your local library relies both on public funding and individual donations to provide the programs and services you enjoy. FVRL is a registered charity that depends on support from generous individuals like you. Private donations do not replace the library’s core funding — instead they enhance the programs and services the library provides. By donating to FVRL, you can make a difference in your community. When you contribute, 100 per cent of your donation goes to library programs and services — not administration costs. You will receive a tax receipt for any donation of $10 or more. To learn more about FVRL’s monthly giving program or to make a donation, please visit us online at www.fvrl.ca/read/support.htm, at your library or by calling 1-888-668-4141 (ext. 7024).

his is the ultimate “battle of the books.” Reading Link Challenge is a reading program for students in grades 4 and 5 that promotes the “sport of reading.” Using elements of a classic reading program, kids are encouraged to participate in a group activity, to read for retention and to participate in a public library activity that promotes the love of reading. This program is presented in collaboration with 13 different school districts. In teams of seven, kids read and become familiar with a set of six selected books. At the first challenge level, teams within a school compete with each other answering questions on characters, plots and settings. The winning team at each school goes on to the Grand Challenge level at the public library. The winners of the Grand Challenge move on to the Global Videoconference Challenge level, where they compete against winners from the Seattle, Washington region for the International Reading Plaque. Connect at the Library: Celebrate Canadian Library Month

L

ibraries Connect is the theme of Canadian Library Month 2012. As part of a changing world, Canada's public libraries are constantly growing, evolving and connecting people in our increasingly information-driven society. From Delta to Boston Bar, FVRL’s 24 locations provide an inviting place to connect in 15 Fraser Valley municipalities. We are more than just books, we offer a diverse range of programs, and provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, engage and discover the world both in-library and online via our website and online resources. Canadian Library Month isn’t just about celebrating public libraries; it is also about celebrating our wonderfully supportive customers. Visit us throughout October to help us celebrate public libraries and you—the customer.

Library live and on tour FVRL is taking the library to the people! Join LiLi and Tour Manager Smitty Miller at various events throughout the fall as they connect with the community. The centerpiece of this initiative is a highly visible souped-up 2012 Nissan Cube with some very un-library like enhancements including a rocking audio and video gaming system and onboard technology gadget bar. Unlike traditional ‘bookmobiles’, LiLi stresses services, access to information, and awareness of the library, rather than being exclusively about library materials. Learn more about the initiative, including event dates at www.libraryliveandontour.com.
