When FVRL first opened its doors in 1930, the library was a very different place. Pen and paper, card catalogues, date stamps and ink pads were the librarian’s tools. How things have changed! As information transforms, the library changes with it. We are responding to the needs of our customers and keeping one step ahead. The future is now at FVRL, and this is what it looks like:

Information Technology With a mission to connect our customers to the world of information and ideas, FVRL delivers the library to you — online 24/7. In July we launched our updated website with enhanced features and streamlined navigation. The catalogue, program listings, online resources and downloadable digital content are all at your fingertips.

Self-serve options FVRL customers are pretty savvy. You like the convenience of doing some things for yourselves. That’s why we offer a number of quick and easy self-serve options. Online holds and self-serve checkouts streamline your library experience. You can even pay fines through online banking. But never fear — if you need a little help, our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always there to assist.

expanding traditional services As we head into the future, the role of the library will evolve. More than just a repository of books, a library is a social hub offering programs and services to the community. At FVRL we are partnering with municipalities and community agencies to deliver resources for families and businesses. Programs like Outreach Services and Library Live and On Tour (libraryliveandontour.com) are taking the library on the road to reach people who may have barriers to visiting the library. We are building the library of the future today: a place both physical and virtual where people can learn and grow.

Fall 2013 Author Reading Series JJ Lee

JJ Lee is a fashion columnist and art critic from New Westminster. He writes for the National Post and Elle Canada. JJ will read from his critically acclaimed book and talk about the transformative nature of memoir writing. The Measure of a Man: The Story of a Father, a Son, and a Suit was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Charles Taylor Prize, and the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize. It is an unforgettable story of love, forgiveness and learning what it means to be a man.

It’s back to school time, and FVRL has a great lineup of author readings for students. FVRL partners with local schools to bring classes to the library for these special events. This fall, we are hosting three writers — two for kids and one for young adults. Check your local library to find books by these great BC authors. These author readings are offered to registered school groups, and space is limited. If you would like to attend with a home-schooled child, please contact your local library to see if space is available.

Explore the cool side of science with Chilliwack author Fiona Bayrock! She will guide you through the publishing process — everything a little idea goes through to become a book on the shelf. Fiona will also share tips and tricks that kids can use in their own writing. Her books include Bubble Homes and Fish Farts and Icebergs! among others.

Be inspired by Vancouver author Maggie de Vries. Kids will learn about the writing process and find out how to craft stories from their own life experiences. Maggie will share a few of her animal stories: Tale of a Great White Fish, Fraser Bear and Big City Bees.

Mike deas

Learn how graphic novels are made! Victoria author/illustrator Mike Deas will engage middle school students with an interactive multimedia presentation. Mike will describe all the stages of his work from thumbnail sketches to publication. You can follow the adventures of Mike’s zany alien characters in Dalen and Gole: Scandal in Port Angus.

Our experienced and knowledgeable staff can help students quickly find the resources they need to be successful this school year. Staff can assist in finding the answers to tough homework questions, sourcing trusted print and digital information, researching essays and writing bibliographies. Visit the library for: • Silent and group study space • Free Wi-Fi (at most locations) • Internet and word processing stations access • Photocopy and print services (available for a small fee) If you have a library card from one of FVRL’s 25 locations, you also have access to free online peer tutors for homework help in math, science, and social studies. The service is available from 6 pm to 9 pm Sundays through Thursdays. Each session is limited to 20 minutes.

How the Free Online Peer Tutoring Works: Access the peer tutor service from the Homework Help page, available under the Programs & Services tab, on the FVRL website. Click “access live peer tutors” and you will be re-directed to the Tutor World BC and asked to choose tutoring for either: • Grades 6 to 9, or • Grades 10 to 12 For Grades 6 to 9, students must login with their FVRL card and four-digit PIN. You will then have immediate access to Tutor World BC. For Grades 10 to 12, you will be re-directed to the LearnNowBC website where you must first create a username by providing some personal information and your BC Personal Education Number (PEN), if you know it. Once you’ve created a LearnNowBC username, access is granted to Tutor World BC for tutoring. Your personal information is collected under the authority of the School Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Are you finding it harder to enjoy reading your favourite books? Is print size a problem? Large print publications are printed in 16-point font size or larger. FVRL’s collection of over 10,000 large print titles include award-winning, popular and classic fiction, as well as informational books and magazines. Outreach customers can also enjoy borrowing eBooks from the FVRL collection. Reading on your computer, tablet or eReader allows you to expand the font size to suit your needs. And if a larger font isn’t useful, perhaps audiobooks may be for you. Customers who cannot read or hold print books due to disability

can still listen to new titles by their favourite authors. An MP3 contains a whole book on one disk. Visit your local library today to check out this audiobook format. If you are no longer able to go into your local library, you can apply to register as an Outreach Services customer. You can receive a monthly delivery of large print books, audio books and more! Author Reading: Hugh Brewster • The Reach 32388 Veterans Way, Abbotsford Thursday, Nov 7 (time to be announced) To commemorate Remembrance Day, the Clearbrook Library and The Reach host award-winning author Hugh Brewster, who has written extensively about Canada’s involvement in wars throughout the world. Kids in Grades 4 to 8 are invited to an afternoon multimedia presentation with live footage and fascinating images of Canada’s D-Day heroes relating to two of Hugh’s children’s books: On Juno Beach and the upcoming From Vimy to Victory, both published by Scholastic Canada. Ghost Towns of BC: Sandon • Clearbrook Library Saturday, Nov 16, 2 pm – 3:30 pm Travel back in time with wellknown historian John Mitchell (www.bcghosttowns.com) as he shares the story of Sandon. The “Monte Carlo of BC,” Sandon burst to life during the silver boom of the mid 1890s and was the first city in the province to be fully electrified! The town was wide open and wild 24/7 with tin horn gamblers, bordellos, newspaper men and two railways — all tucked tightly between towering mountains.

Painters from the Fraser Valley Watercolour Society will give demos on the basics of watercolour painting and then set students loose to create their own works of art. The “Monte Carlo of BC,” Sandon burst to life during the silver boom of the mid 1890s and was the first city in the province to be fully electrified! The town was wide open and wild 24/7 with tin horn gamblers, bordellos, newspaper men and two railways — all tucked tightly between towering mountains.

Celebrating delta libraries 2013! Honouring Our Past, Imagining Our Future!

elta joined the Fraser Valley Regional Library in 1947; however library service in Delta began as early as 1895. It started in Ladner, with the Mechanics’ Institute Reading Room, which operated out of a local drug store and loaned books for a fee of five cents. In February 1899 the Delta Council voted to grant $200 towards furnishing a municipal library on the condition that the public erect a building, costing at least $150 on a freehold site. A reading room was established near the post office. Over the next 50 years, six libraries were located in various areas around town, including an electrical shop and the municipal council chamber. Ladner Pioneer Library The Kinsmen Club recognized the need for a permanent library building in Ladner and raised $30,000 in 1960. The library opened in 1963, with the local architect winning a Governor General’s Award for design. It has remained in that location for the past 50 years, undergoing restoration after a fire in 1977, and an expansion in 1999 as a result of a $1 million donation from a generous library customer. George Mackie Library North Delta Library opened in 1972, thanks to the fundraising efforts of George Thomas Mackie and the construction labour of organizing volunteers. The 3,500-square-foot library space was too small to serve the local population, and in 1983 a much larger 11,400-squarefoot library space was opened nearby. At that time, the name was changed from the North Delta Library to the George Mackie Library to honor his dedication to the project. Tsawwassen Library The library in Tsawwassen was built through the fundraising efforts of the Beta Sigma Phi, a walk-a-thon, two auctions and a swap meet. Local volunteers provided much of the labour, including searching for barn boards for the exterior of the library building. Committee members found the barn that they thought was to be the source of the siding and began dismantling it, only to be told by the farmer that they were working on the wrong barn. The library opened in 1973, but by the mid-80s it was too small. In 1986, the library moved to the current location in the Town Centre Mall.

Learning to read begins before children start school. Young children need to develop important language and literacy skills before they can actually learn to read. Parents and other caregivers can start now to help their children develop these skills. This workshop demonstrates how parents and caregivers can use five familiar and easy-to-use practices to develop language and other early literacy skills in children from birth to age five. The Every Child Ready to Read workshop explains why the skills are so important, demonstrates how to help children learn the skills, provides titles of high-interest books that are age appropriate, and sends parents and caregivers home with early literacy activities they can incorporate into a daily routine.

Spend an evening with Matt McCoy, author of the newly released The Kid Who Missed the Bus. He’ll be talking about his experiences playing junior hockey in BC, then playing in Europe, and finally playing in Texas for the Western Professional League. The Kid Who Missed the Bus is both fact and fiction, based on what McCoy saw and experienced on his hockey journey, but sprinkled with some editorial license, mainly to protect the innocent. Connecting Our History: Fort Hope and Fort Langley • Hope Library Saturday, Sep 7, 3 pm – 4 pm Hope was established as a Hudson’s Bay Company Post in 1847 and was a major point on the Fur Brigades from the Interior to Fort Langley downstream. Voyagers could keep their horses in Hope and prepare for the journey to Fort Langley. Fort Hope was also a bustling stopover for traders and prospectors as they made their way up from Fort Langley, the starting point of the Fraser River Gold Rush. Mike Starr of the Fort Langley National Historic Site of Canada will present this informative and fascinating look at brigade trail history as part of Hope’s 2013 Brigade Days celebration! Hope Fall Health Fair

A Hope tradition! Bring your children down to this fun Winterfest event at the library. Arts Council volunteers will help the little ones write their letters to the North Pole. The letters will then be collected by Father Christmas! The afternoon will feature a holiday poem by Krackle, Christmas stories, music and lots of fun! This program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Hope Library and the Hope and District Arts Council.

Learn how you can continue to drive safely by attending this Mature Driver’s Workshop with Don Harder. Ghost Towns of BC: Sandon • Maple Ridge Public Library Saturday, Sep 28, 1:30 pm – 3 pm Travel back in time with wellknown historian John Mitchell (www.bcghosttowns.com) as he shares the story of Sandon, the “Monte Carlo of BC.” Sandon burst to life during the silver boom of the mid 1890s. The town was wide open and wild 24/7 with tin horn gamblers, bordellos, newspaper men and two railways.

OUtside the BOX A Fibre Art Extravaganza • White Rock Library: Wednesday, Sep 4 – Monday, Sep 30 Join us for the Third Annual Outside the Box celebration! Beautiful and versatile fibre and textiles arts ranging from fine art to everyday functional items, have a rich history.

The Adventures in Fibre Featured Art Exhibition includes Pauline Dutkowski, Judy Alexander, Valerie Unruh, Elizabeth Carefoot, Annet Holierhoek, Katherine Siemens, Elke Denhart, Alicia Ballard, Linda Coe, Barbara Morley and Vladimira Fillion. White Rock Library will also host a display of quilts by the Piece Arch Quilters, as well as demonstrations and displays by the Peace Arch Weavers & Spinners and the Semiahmoo Guild of Needlearts. Beyond the Wall: The Memories, the Art with Shohreh Ghanbary • White Rock Library: Monday, Sep 23, 7 pm – 8:30 pm Artist and activist Shohreh Ghanbary talks about her experiences in Iran and her new life in Canada. Ghanbary was imprisoned in the 1980s in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison after taking to the streets to protest the Islamic Revolution. She endured horrendous conditions, and lived under the constant threat of execution. In her cell at night she would embroider images inside the pockets of her chador. Each year her parents were permitted to bring her a change of clothes, and her messages were smuggled out of the prison walls. Artwork by Shohreh Ghanbary is on exhibit September 1 through September 30 at Semiahmoo Arts: 14600 North Bluff Road, Centennial Park, White Rock, Monday to Thursday 10 am to 6 pm. Hop Aboard the Reading Train! The reading train rolls back into the library for its seventh year. FVRL invites all kindergartners to come explore their local library by joining the All Aboard for Kindergarten (AA4K) program and signing up for a library card. FVRL has hand-picked 100 great reads that kindergartners will love to read and have read to them. There are new books, classics, non-fiction and some French language books. Look for the AA4K display in your library. AA4K is an innovative program that offers a package of literacy materials to kindergarten children and their families. At the end of September, participating schools in FVRL’s 15 member municipalities, give out packages to the kindergartners. Each child’s package includes a special Literacy Train foldout reading record with a checklist of the 100 books, literacy information for families and an invitation for the child to get a library card. Kindergartners who sign up for AA4K at any of FVRL’s 25 locations will receive a special card holder for their library card. As they visit the library throughout the year, they are encouraged to borrow books and enter prize draws. If your kindergartner does not receive a package and you would like one, please call or visit your favourite FVRL location.

Diverse Customers – Diverse Collection Did you know that FVRL’s collection features various types of items in many different languages? To be exact, our World Languages Collection consists of materials in 14 different languages. The collection is designed to meet the needs of native speakers of a variety of European, Asian and Middle Eastern languages. The always-growing collection, shared between our 25 libraries, currently contains over 42,000 items. It includes adult and children’s fiction and non-fiction print material, as well as DVDs and CDs. These materials are listed in the online catalogue.
