If you have a tablet or smart phone, you already have an eReader, so come see us and we will teach you how take advantage of our free eBook collection. We can also help you decide what kind of eReader to get. Try it, you’ll think it’s the coolest thing since air conditioning!
Moose are big. Maple leaves are red. We don’t say ‘zee’. We say it ‘zed’. It’s easy for us Canadians to brag about our home and native land, so this year, put those thoughts on paper and let’s share it. There is nothing like celebrating a birthday with some rhyming, so write a little poem for Canada. It must be short, it doesn’t have to be sweet. Come write it on a card during the month of June and the People’s Choice will win a Great Canadian Prize and be read out to our communities during local Canada Day celebrations.

SUMMER FUN SUMMER READING TIPS FOR PARENTS Your involvement with your child this summer can help make the Summer Reading Club at FVRL an exciting adventure! Here are some ideas to help you make Summer Reading Club all that it can be for your child. • Establish a regular time for reading in your home, for all members of the family. • Offer to share stories at bedtime or as dinner conversation. • Encourage your child to share favourite stories with you. • Help your child to set a realistic goal for summer reading. This may be reading for at least 15 minutes every day, reading a certain number of books, or exploring books on a particular topic of interest to your child. Try to encourage a goal that will challenge the child but not be so ambitious that reading becomes a chore. • Show genuine interest in the reading material your child discovers during the summer. Appreciate all books your child selects, even the ones that look “too easy.” Summer is a time for fun, after all, and you can always guide your child to a more challenging book the next time you visit the library. • Read to your child. Even if children can read themselves, they still enjoy hearing good stories read aloud. Readers in the early grades can understand far more advanced vocabulary and complex stories than they are able to read — it helps their reading later if you continue to read to them.
• Encourage older children to read aloud to younger children, or to you as you do chores. • Read yourself! Make sure your child knows that you enjoy reading, too. There is nothing like a good role model. • Take your child to their favourite FVRL location to choose books or to attend summer programs. Many children appreciate going with friends — ask your child to invite a friend or two.
DO YOU LIKE SURPRISES? ARE YOU ADVENTUROUS ENOUGH TO CHECK OUT A BAG OF BOOKS SIGHT UNSEEN? IF YOU ANSWER YES, THEN YOUR BOOKS ARE READY! All FVRL locations will be offering Grab ’N Go book bags! Available for children, teens and adults, these bags are offered in many different genres like action/adventure, Canadiana, popular fiction, romance, science fiction and more! Inside each are multiple books preselected by library staff to save you time. Read one or read them all! Then when you are done, return them through the book drop as usual.

In 2011, FVRL Community Development Librarian Smitty Miller set out to develop a bookmobile for FVRL. After research and consultation she was told that the library had neither the time nor the funds for such a large project. This news forced Smitty to think differently. The change in mindset led to the epiphany that FVRL is more than just ‘books and materials,’ and that the true heart of FVRL is its services. And so Library Live and On Tour was born.
Library Live and On Tour has reached the underserved by reducing common barriers to accessing the library, including: financial barriers for people with fines, feelings of stigmatization, lack of knowledge about where to go, what resources are available or how to use them and lack of interest. An unexpected outcome of the initiative’s outreach activities is the deep emotional impact these acts have on underserved people.
When FVRL first started developing Library Live and On Tour the immediate goals were:
“I’ve got on my jeans, my ball cap and usually no makeup – standing there I’m just a regular person, not a scary librarian. Making myself accessible in that way, subconsciously makes the library accessible to those people who might not think the library is for them,” says Smitty. “I’ve actually had one woman cry when I reinstated her library card. When I erase a trouble, which might be $10 in fines, their sense of relief is palpable. I’ve had people say to me ‘boy I’ve missed the library – I love reading’.”
• To raise awareness about FVRL and shatter stereotypes about libraries, library services and library customers; and • To reach the underserved who do not know about the library or have some obstacles to visiting the library. The centerpiece of the Library Live and On Tour is a highly visible, souped-up vehicle affectionately nicknamed LiLi. Since Smitty and LiLi hit the road last summer, they’ve covered over 10,000 kilometres and completed over 100 community outreach visits. More than one visitor has reacted with surprised amazement at LiLi saying “This is the library?” But LiLi goes beyond raising awareness about what the modern library is. Rather, LiLi is a visible and audible redefinition of what the library does.
FVRL
Library Live and On Tour has helped to redefine FVRL and the services it offers to the community. “Libraries aren’t what people think they are if they haven’t been to a library in a while. People will find that they aren’t ‘shhhhh’ places much anymore. Library Live and on Tour embodies inclusivity – THIS is the library!”
