scott barry kaufman

FVRL FEATURE AUTHOR

S

evere ear infections rendered three-year-old Scott Barry Kaufman nearly deaf. As a result, he needed a few extra seconds to process things in real time—which landed him in a special education classroom. Inspired by his personal experience, Kaufman, now a cognitive psychologist, has made it his mission to debunk traditional methods of measuring intelligence. Why do we have such an obsessive need to compare students? Why do we insist on labeling and categorizing everyone? In his talks, Kaufman encourages us—and specifically educators, school psychologists, parents and caregivers— to move towards a culture of inspiration, where we only compare people to their past and future selves.

From Evaluation to Inspiration: Why the Culture of the Classroom is Broken, and How to Fix It 7:00 pm • Wednesday, February 26 Township of Langley Civic Facility Fraser River Presentation Theatre Fourth Floor, 20338 – 65 Avenue, Langley Doors open at 6:30 pm. Presentation begins at 7 pm. This presentation is free to the public, no registration required. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment; seating is limited to 200 guests.

Scott Barry Kaufman is adjunct assistant professor of psychology at New York University. He is the author of Ungifted: The Truth About Talent, Practice, Creativity, and the Many Paths to Greatness (2013, Basic Books). Learn more about the author at scottbarrykaufman.com.

Reading Link Challenge is a program for students in Grades 4 and 5 that promotes the “sport of reading.” Working in teams, students read a set of six selected books, and then compete to answer questions about character, plot and setting. RLC helps kids develop good reading habits: participants are more likely to read for fun and make regular visits to the library. The Paper House by Lois Peterson is one of the titles chosen for this year’s competition. Peterson is a local award-winning author who writes for children, teens and adults. A public library employee of 30 years, she also teaches creative writing and leads storytelling workshops. This spring, Lois Peterson will visit RLC classes throughout the FVRL system. She will chat with students about The Paper House and describe her writing process.

That point is about HELP — helping yourself or helping your friends when there is sadness or doubts. The winners of the contest will earn great prizes and have their video on the website. TEENS AT FVRL

Y

oung people are an important part of FVRL and our communities. We partner with local organizations to offer exciting and interesting programs and events just for teens including job workshops, games nights, craft sessions, book clubs and more. Many of our libraries have Teen Advisory Groups (TAGs) which give teens the chance to gain volunteer experience while having their say about the library. Teens can also participate as mentors in Reading Buddy programs offered at a number of our libraries. In March, teens can enter the Picture This @ FVRL photo contest for a chance to win great prizes like gift cards and tablets. Throughout the contest photos

FVRL

are featured on our Facebook page with winners receiving front and centre coverage and prestige. See page 7 for more information. The fun continues in the summer with the Teen Summer Reading Club, which features contests and activities, both online and in-library, with even more fantastic prizes. It’s been argued that the young adult (YA) collection has the best books there are! But don’t tell the adults. Teens should be sure to check out this collection at their local library. Look for teen graphic novels too! The library also has a growing collection of downloadable YA eBooks and audiobooks. Ever left an assignment to the last minute? Need to do research but can’t find reliable information?

At Your Library: Programs, Events and Services

FVRL has great databases that contain reliable information you can access from home. Teens @ FVRL is an online space where teens can find book reviews, library happenings and other fun stuff. Find it on our Facebook page. Be sure to check out our homepage for more information and access to our other social media channels and interactive catalogue. Teen programming and services is an integral part of FVRL: after all, you are the future. Drop us a line, send us a tweet, like us on Facebook—tell us what you think, what you like, what you want. All opinions are valued!

EVERY PARENT WANTS THEIR CHILD TO READ. Want to help your child become a great reader? Here are five simple steps to set your child on the road to reading. TALKING

READING

From the moment that beautiful baby is placed in our arms we start talking to them. Chatting with your child helps build their language skills, as well as helping them to make sense of the world. Each new word is a new idea that builds language skills and brain development. A well developed brain is the key to learning — anything!

Reading with your child each day is still one of the most effective ways of helping children to become proficient readers. Modelling for your child the importance of reading, both by reading to your child and reading yourself, you are giving your child the message that they live in a home that values reading.

SINGING Believe it or not, singing to your child helps them to learn how to read. Staying in tune is not as important as singing. Songs are often written in rhymes, and hearing rhymes help children to become aware of the sounds in words. This awareness is the beginning of being able to distinguish between the different sounds that letters make. Singing also requires you to slow your speech down, and this slowing down of speech helps children to build vocabulary.

PLAYING Play is so important for children that it is recognized by the United Nations High Commission as the birthright of every child. It is often said that play is the work of children. Free play allows children to engage and interact with their world, helping them to develop new understandings of how the world works. Children are able to bring this understanding to reading and listening to stories.

78

FVRL

Reading to your child allows you and your child to slow down and recapture those wonderful cuddling times that you both enjoyed when your child was a baby. It is a nurturing time that will help bring you closer together and has the added benefit of helping your child to learn about books and reading.

WRI TING Writing and reading go together. Writing helps children learn that letters and words stand for sounds and that print has meaning. In the early years many children are not yet ready to print on their own. As a parent, you can still help them to learn about the value of writing. From writing shopping lists to writing a story they tell you, each day brings a different way to show your child the value of reading and writing. Talking, singing, playing, reading and writing—these five activities are all part of our daily lives. As your child’s first and best teacher, you can be the one to help set your child on the road to reading.
