Reading Link Challenge (RLC) is a province-wide quiz format program for children in Grades 4 and 5 that encourages reading as a fun recreational activity and allows students of all reading abilities to engage in the sport of reading. As of 2012, 13 library systems across the province have joined RLC. Currently, Fraser Valley Regional Library has students from 13 municipalities participating with over 360 RLC teams. Teams compete in School, Library, Community and Grand Challenge events. This February, in celebration of Reading Link Challenge, Fraser Valley Regional Library will be hosting children’s author Rachna Gilmore for a series of talks throughout the library system. Gilmore is a best-selling, Governor General’s award winning author of over 20 children’s picture books, early readers, middle grade and YA novels, with multiple awards and honours. During her visit to FVRL she will be talking about her most recent book, That Boy Red, which is one of the BC Reading Link Challenge title selections for 2012–13. OUTREACH SERVICES OUTREACH SERVICES promotes universal library access and lifelong learning by allowing FVRL’s home-bound customers to continue their enjoyment of reading. • Audio Book Service is for those who cannot read or hold print books due to disability. Customers enjoy their favourite authors and the latest titles in MP3 or DAISY format. • Library to You Service is for those who are unable to visit the library. Customers enjoy home delivery of books, CDs and DVDs based on personalized reading profiles. • The Library Lounge Collection allows people in residential care facilities to enjoy library materials. THE LIBRARY LOUNGE COLLECTION Yvone Henke loves books. The Chilliwack resident and avid reader has been an FVRL customer since 1980. But visiting her local library has become more difficult in recent years. She had to give up driving at age 80 and later moved to Valleyhaven residential care facility. Leaving her old home with its big bookshelves was a difficult transition, but Yvone continues to enjoy books and the library. “Now the public library comes to me,” Yvone says. Residents at Valleyhaven enjoy the Library Lounge Collection — FVRL’s newest Outreach Services initiative. The collection supports residents in community living facilities by giving them access to library materials. FVRL staff “weed” books from its system collection and deliver a selection of 50 to 150 books to each care facility. One library card entitles all residents to use the collection, and the selection is changed every two to three months. Yvone looks forward to the Library Lounge delivery. “It’s like Christmas,” she says. “You never know what you’re going to get!” The collection now take up three shelves, which are spread throughout the facility. Cozy nooks around the building provide quiet reading areas. Outreach manager Earla Legault encourages residents, family, and staff members to explore the collection together: “There are plenty of books for everyone. Asking ‘Have you read any good books lately?’ is a great way to engage with others.” Enjoying a new book or a familiar author brings normalcy to what can be a difficult transition for some. For seniors like Yvone, this can make a real difference. “I’d be lost if I didn’t have the books,” she says.

Outreach Customer Profile: YVONE HENKE How long have you been an FVRL customer? Since 1980, when I first moved to Chilliwack. My son was a reader, and he told me about the library.

Anne Herridge (left), Valleyhaven recreational manager, helps resident Yvone Henke (right) choose books from the Library Lounge Collection.

What do you like about FVRL Outreach Services? It’s great! There’s lots available to read. They bring me the kinds of books I like. What kind of books do you enjoy? Mystery, true crime and even metaphysical books. I like Anne Rule, I’ve read quite a bit of hers as well.

• Agassiz Library Last Thursday of the month 6:30 pm – 8 pm

• Agassiz Library Thursdays starting Feb 7 2 pm

Much like the addictive nature of caffeine and sweets, it’s hard to say no to the temptation of a good read. We’re looking for willing converts to ensnare in our devious web of literacy, snacks and conversation. This book club is drop in, and if you have read the book before, you can skip out. Join in — we know you are unable to resist the lure of a good book and lively discussion.

If you are looking for a volunteer activity that suits you, come to a meeting of the Agassiz Friends of the Library. This is an active group of people who do all kinds of things to support their library and its services for the communities of Agassiz-Harrison. Events such as the Annual Quiz Night, Boot & Book Sale and Christmas Pictures at the Library are some of the ways they get involved.

This is a brand new program for the retired set. Drop in any Thursday at 2 pm. You will find a pot of coffee or cup of tea, some sweets and a place just for you to sit and visit. You can browse a special selection of books and audio materials. The Coffee Break will also host helpful people to assist you with health information, computer learning and all kinds of topics of interest. Watch for a printed schedule of guests in your library.

Raminder Sidhu’s courageous and timely novel, Tears of Mehndi explores the rich, complex and often heartbreaking lives of a tight-knit community in Vancouver’s Little India. Through the perspectives of several women whose lives intertwine over a generation, Sidhu deftly exposes the shrouded violence within the Indo-Canadian community, a difficult and often dissembled subject. @FVRL TEEN PHOTO CONTEST

2013

Love to take pictures? Then snap to it and win some prizes. Back by popular demand: To celebrate Teen Tech Week FVRL is running a photo contest for the entire month of March. Take as many photos as you like, but submit your favourite five. Each photograph should fall under one of the following categories: Book It — Love to read? Then send us a pic of you in the library, reading by flashlight, whatever. Show us! It’s Elemental — From rocks to bugs to sunsets. Wow us with your nature shots! Urban Life — Skyscrapers, street scenes, sneakers on a wire. Snap it! Wild Card — Be creative. If it doesn’t fit in the other categories, it fits here!

Read My Lips — Take a photo and add speech bubbles. Make it funny, make it poignant, make it whatever you want! If you’re age 13 to 19 and live or work in the FVRL area then you’re eligible to enter. Like us on Facebook and submit your photos. It’s that easy. Contest opens March 1 and closes March 31, 2013.

DO YOU LIKE SURPRISES? ARE YOU ADVENTUROUS ENOUGH TO CHECK OUT A BAG OF BOOKS SIGHT UNSEEN? IF YOU ANSWER YES, THEN YOUR BOOKS ARE READY! All FVRL locations will be offering Grab ’N Go book bags in the new year! Available for children, teens and adults, these bags are offered in many different genres like action/adventure, Canadiana, popular fiction, romance, science fiction and more! Inside each are multiple books preselected by library staff to save you time. Read one or read them all! Then when you are done, return them through the book drop as usual.

LIBRARY LIVE AND ON TOUR Bringing Wellness to People in Our Communities READING MEANS THE WORLD TO ME. IT’S NECESSARY IN MY LIFE.

LiLi

F

VRL customers know the library is a great place to read, learn and play. But did you know that FVRL also brings library service to people struggling in our communities? Library Live and On Tour is a mobile initiative for those who do not know about our libraries or have some obstacles to visiting them. The centerpiece of this initiative is LiLi, a highly visible, souped-up 2012 Nissan Cube. The vehicle sports features like a rocking audio and video gaming system and an onboard technology gadget bar. But beyond all the flash, LiLi serves a much deeper purpose: to bring information and wellness to disadvantaged people in the communities we serve. Smitty Miller is LiLi’s “tour manager.” As FVRL’s community development librarian, Smitty drives LiLi to communities throughout our services area. From Tsawwassen to Boston Bar, you might see Smitty at events or celebrations talking up the library and all the great services we offer. But when not in the public eye, she also makes visits to a variety of agencies serving marginalized and socially excluded people. These include food banks, soup kitchens and transition houses. One of LiLi’s stops is the Thunderbird Motel Project in Hope. The motel is a community-based, low-barrier housing initiative that provides shelter and support to people in need. Coordinator Paul Keller explains that while his clients benefit from help with basics necessities of life, it’s the “enjoyable, fun things that can really

make a difference.” Programs like Library Live and On Tour “add the ‘pleasure piece’ that we miss.” Debbie McBean, a Thunderbird Motel resident, is overjoyed when LiLi comes to visit: “Smitty comes out with her little car, and we go out and we choose books, and those books give me hours of entertainment. They relax me at night. They teach me things. They increase my vocabulary. Reading means the world to me. It’s necessary in my life.” Smitty’s passion is the fuel that drives LiLi’s success. She explains the library’s role in bringing wellness to the community: “I really believe that libraries should be there next to the practical nurse, next to the outreach worker, next to the social services — and it’s about time. That’s why we’re doing it.” Learn more about LiLi and FVRL community development at libraryliveandontour.com.
