EVERY PARENT WANTS THEIR CHILD TO READ. Reading with your child is fun, and a great way to spend time together. Sharing books with your child helps open their eyes, minds and hearts to different people and situations, and stretches their horizons. Reading together increases children’s literacy skills, but research also proves that children who enjoy reading do better at school in all subjects. Best of all, it helps to build a strong and loving relationship with your child.

A PROUD LEGACY Established in 1930, FVRL is the largest public library system in BC. Serving almost 700,000 people through 25 community libraries, FVRL is a hub for community connections and culture. With a mission “to connect people to the world of information and ideas,” FVRL plays a prominent role in communities throughout the Fraser Valley. Customers have free access to over 1.3 million items, including 24/7 online access to eBooks and digital content. Knowledgeable staff deliver information and referral services, while programming and events reflect community priorities and interests. Governed by a board of directors, FVRL is financially supported by its member municipalities. A unique funding formula and cost saving partnerships, including centralized administrative and programming services help keep operating expenses low.

GIVE BACK TO THE LIBRARY Libraries grow when communities and individuals come together. Your local library relies both on public funding and individual donations to provide the programs and services you enjoy. FVRL is a registered charity that depends on support from generous individuals like you. Private donations do not replace the library’s core funding — instead they enhance the programs and services the library provides. By donating to FVRL, you can make a difference in your community. When you contribute, 100 per cent of your donation goes to library programs and services — not administration costs. You will receive a tax receipt for any donation of $10 or more. To learn more about FVRL’s monthly giving program or to make a donation, please visit us online at www.fvrl.ca/donate.php at your library or by calling 1-888-668-4141 (ext. 7005).

ALWAYS REMEMBER

E

very year on November 11, Canadians pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. More

than 2.3 million Canadians have served our country in this way, and more than 118,000 have died. They gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace. 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War – the Always Remember reading list was created in its commemoration.

DAN BAR-EL FVRL FEATURE AUTHOR

Fall is a special time of year. Not only do we celebrate the harvest, but it’s also time for our annual kids’ author readings. Every year FVRL partners with local schools to plan these special events for classes throughout our service area.

T

his fall we welcome Dan Bar-el, a Vancouver-based author, educator and storyteller. Dan will meet with school classes to present “It’s All About Me: A Very, Very Personal Book Presentation.” Students will learn all about the author and his writing. Dan will explain where his stories come from and share his thoughts on humour, which plays a big part in his work. He will also read excerpts from his chapter books, including his upcoming title Audrey (cow). To learn more about Dan Bar-el and his books, visit danbar-el.com or search for his titles in the FVRL catalogue.

Audrey (cow) by Dan Bar-el Publication date: November 2014 Audrey is a cow with poetry in her blood, who yearns for the greener pastures beyond Bittersweet Farms. But when Roy the horse tells this bovine dreamer that she is headed for Abbot’s War, the slaughter house, Audrey knows that she must leave her home and friends sooner than she ever imagined. With the help of a whole crew of animals and humans alike, Audrey attempts to escape the farm she lives on—and certain death.
