WELCOME to the Fraser Valley Regional Library summer program guide. This guide provides a comprehensive look at the programs and services offered by FVRL and features season highlights. Visit us in-person or online this summer to take advantage of the many reading, learning, and playing opportunities available at the library – all free!

DARLENE ALLISON was born in Manitoba and is a member of

the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation. Darlene is a self-taught artist who has been creating art in many forms for over 35 years. She is skilled in drawing, painting and sculpture, but her focus for the past 14 years has been on carving alabasters and soap stones, some of which she gathered herself from mountains right here in BC. All of Darlene’s imaginative pieces are one of a kind works of art, and she has sold them to private collectors locally, and as far away as Australia. Darlene’s Legacy sculpture as Ridge Meadows Artist in Residence “Cherish the Day” is located in Maple Ridge’s City Hall. Darlene will be demonstrating her soapstone carving at our libraries and interacting with people of all ages!

FVRL ABORIGINAL ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Celebrate National Aboriginal History Month at FVRL! Throughout the month of June, FVRL is proud to welcome artists Darlene Allison and Jay Havens to many of our libraries. Darlene and Jay will be spending their days working on their art, chatting with the public, and presenting programs to registered groups of all ages! Please contact your library for more information and detailed schedules of each artist’s visit to your library.

JAY HAVENS

is an interdisciplinary artist working in the fields of visual arts, mural making and scenography (stage design and production). He is a proud descendant of the Haudenosaunee Mohawk Nation on his mother’s side and of Euro-Canadian roots on his father’s. A long-time resident of Fraser Valley, Jay currently spends his days working as a freelance designer, artist in residence, and instructor for several universities, school districts and production companies throughout the Lower Mainland. Much of his work examines stories and the ways in which stories can be told visually to act as communicators between cultures. Jay is a master’s candidate at Emily Carr University where he is researching Canadian Aboriginality, visual narrative and engaging communities through storytelling. Jay will be demonstrating his art at our libraries, and interacting with people of all ages!

SUMMER READING TIPS

Reading is a great summer activity for kids and their parents. Make it a joint adventure! Here are some ideas to get your child excited about reading while school is out:

5. Join a Summer Reading Club at the library. From babies to kids, and teens to adults, FVRL has a Summer Reading Club for everyone and joining is free! Check the rest of this guide for special summer reading activities and events.

1. Read aloud together with your child every day. Get out into nature and read outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

6. Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favourite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

2. Set a good example! Let your kids catch you reading! Keep lots of reading material around the house. Set aside time to turn off the TV and have everyone relax with a good book. 3. Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it. This is a great way to develop habits of the mind and build capacity for thought and insight. 4. Let kids choose what they want to read. Kids who can choose their own books are more likely to enjoy reading and make it a regular habit.

7. Make trips a way to encourage reading by reading aloud traffic signs, billboards, notices. Show your children how to read a map, and once you are on the road, let them take turns being the navigator. 8. Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook. Tape in souvenirs of your family’s summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together.

Limerick Contest • Agassiz Library Sunday, Jun 1 – Friday, Jun 27 Moose are big, maple leaves are red, we don’t say ‘zee’ we say it ‘zed.’ What is Canadian? There are lots of definitions, but we can have a chuckle at ourselves. We are doing the Great Canadian Limerick Contest, and the winning entries will be read at our local Canada Day celebration. Join the fun and bring your original five-line Canadian limerick to the library and enter. Try for the fame of being a poet and the fortune of winning a great big bag of library goodies. Deadline for entries is Friday, June 27.

Aboriginal Artist in Residence: Jay Havens A Summer Extravaganza: Living Waters • Agassiz Library Thursday, Jul 31, 11 am – 3 pm The award-winning Vancouver Aquarium AquaVan, presented by BC Hydro, will make a splash in Agassiz with live animals from the coast of of British Columbia. Touch a sea star, examine the intricacies of a sea urchin, and be amazed by the wonders of the marine world. It was such a good time, we are doing it again. Save up your treasures and be part of a great summer day at your library. For $15 you get a parking spot, the perfect way to clean some closets and sell your junk... or treasures! On hand will be a coffee and muffin hut, BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches and yes, Virginia, there will be lots of books for sale too! All money raised goes to Agassiz Library special programs for kids in Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs. Registration required.

ADULTS Know-It-All Trivia Quiz Night • Agassiz Library Friday, May 2 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm What’s fun, has great prizes, gives you a chance at fame, and lets you support some fundraising for one of your favourite places? The Annual Know-It-All Trivia Quiz Night, that’s what! Get your friends together and book a table or come as a rogue trivia expert and we will find you a team. Enjoy a good time, great refreshments and the chance at winning the fabulous gift baskets being raffled off during the evening. Tickets are $12 per person. Grateful Executor • Agassiz Library Wednesday, May 28, 7 pm – 8:30 pm Join Kevin Holte of The Grateful Executor for a program all about estate settlement and an executor’s duties. Kevin will discuss the role of the executor, as well as the pros and cons of joint ownership. You’ll also learn about probate, capital gains issues and how to do pre-planning. It’s all in your ears, so bring your earphones and get ready to try something new. A great selection of audiobooks awaits you at the Fitness Centre. Pick one, plug in and get busy! You will love the results - exercising is easier when you are distracted by listening to a good book. Add a bookmark to your audiobook and it will be kept at the Fitness Centre ready for your next work out. We’ll supply the audiobooks, you supply the headphones.

Book Club: Hooked on Books Takes to the Streets • Agassiz Library Thursdays, Jul 3 – Aug 21 10 am – 8 pm We don’t quit book club just because its summer. Read or listen to an audiobook while you travel, garden, walk, or just sit with your eyes closed in the sunshine! For something different in a book club, try out an audiobook from our summer selection, then meet for lemonade in the library to enjoy our usual lively discussions. The audiobook will be available to pick up any time on July 3 or after. You supply the headphones, we supply the rest!

In the Netherlands, Liberation Day is celebrated each year on May 5 to mark the end of occupation by Nazi Germany in 1945. In recognition, the Chilliwack Library will show the locally written and produced 2009 film Droning of Bombers. The film tells the poignant story of Chilliwack’s Hennie Drenten-Regoczi’s family as they coped with life under German army occupation. Refreshments will be served after the screening and Ms. Drenten-Regoczi will be in attendance to answer questions. The 75 minute film is suitable for all ages and was produced at UFV by Gabriel Kirkley.

Our friendly staff can also refer you to local literacy education programs, including one-on-one tutoring. Social Catalogue: Using the catalogue is now an interactive experience. Searching capabilities are more robust, and you can tag, comment, rate and review your library materials. Homework Tutors: “Live” online tutoring is available to students in Grades 6 to 12 in the subjects of math, science and social studies via the Programs & Services tab on the FVRL website.

YOUR LIBRARY CARD As an FVRL cardholder, you can have up to 60 of your favourite materials checked out on your account at any time. Most items will be checked out to you for three weeks; some higher demand materials may be checked out for two weeks. All of FVRL’s Best Seller Express items have a seven-day loan period. Borrowing is always free. Just remember to return materials on time to avoid late charges. Check your borrowing slip for due dates. Items may be returned to any public library in British Columbia. Not done with your items? Most items can be renewed up to three times. Exceptions include high-demand items, items that other customers have requested and items on loan from libraries outside of the FVRL system. Renew your materials online through your account, by phone or in-person.

PITT MEADOWS KIDS The Great LEGO® Challenge Stuffed Animal Parade and Sleepover (for Stuffies only!) • Pitt Meadows Library Monday, Jul 21, 2:30 pm – 3:15 pm If you leave stuffed animals alone in the library, will they run amok? We want to know. The Great Stuffed Animal Parade returns to Pitt Meadows Library, and this year after parading your special stuffed friend around the library (and maybe outside too) with noisemakers, he/she/it is invited to stay for a sleepover with our puppets.
