FVRL is excited to present a brand new program…
1000stories before kindergarten
A world of stories is waiting for you and your child at the library! Every story you read aloud is a gift to your child. How many stories can you read together? Try for 1,000 before kindergarten! You can start anytime from the birth of your child until he or she starts kindergarten. FVRL will guide you along the way. Reading regularly with young children supports brain development and strengthens parent-child relationships. Reading aloud with your child builds language, literacy and social skills that last a lifetime! The average picture book takes just five minutes to read. Three stories a day or 15 minutes a day for one year adds up to 1,095 stories! You and your child can read the same book as many times as you like. Each read counts towards the 1,000 stories! To help you keep track of all that reading your child will get a special 1000 Stories reading log. For each story that you and your child read, fill in one of the images in the reading log. You can log stories read at home, at daycare or preschool, and even stories read at library storytimes! For every 50 stories you and your child read, your child will receive a sticker at the library. There are special prizes for reaching the halfway mark and for finishing all 1,000 stories! This wonderful new program begins on Tuesday, September 1 at all FVRL locations. Come on in and join the fun. We’re looking forward to seeing you!

summer reading tips for parents Reading is a great summer activity for kids and their parents. Make it a joint adventure! Here are some ideas to get your child excited about reading while school is out:
5. Join a Summer Reading Club at the library. From babies to kids, and teens to adults, FVRL has a Summer Reading Club for everyone and joining is free! Check the rest of this guide for special summer reading activities and events.
1. Read aloud together with your child every day. Get out into nature and read outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.
6. Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favourite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.
2. Set a good example! Let your kids catch you reading! Keep lots of reading material around the house. Set aside time to turn off the TV and have everyone relax with a good book. 3. Read the same book your child is reading and discuss it. This is a great way to develop habits of the mind and build capacity for thought and insight. 4. Let kids choose what they want to read. Kids who can choose their own books are more likely to enjoy reading and make it a regular habit.
FVRL
7. Make trips a way to encourage reading by reading aloud traffic signs, billboards, notices. Show your children how to read a map, and once you are on the road, let them take turns being the navigator. 8. Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook. Tape in souvenirs of your family’s summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together.

Lesley Tannen started painting as a counter-point to the situationalinduced attention deficit disorder of the click speed of modern life. Painting is a way to focus her mind. She captures everyday images and then uncovers what drew her attention. Tannen strives to create images with a singular focus — something that will catch your eye and cause it to stop and let the mind pause. GIVE BACK TO THE LIBRARY Libraries grow when communities and individuals come together. Your local library relies both on public funding and individual donations to provide the programs and services you enjoy. author events Teach your children the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. FVRL welcomes Dr. Shimi Kang, m.d., for two special engagements in Delta and Abbotsford. Dr. Shimi Kang has worked directly with hundreds of children and families. She has seen firsthand the harmful effects of overscheduling, over-instructing and overprotecting our children. Many kids lack motivation and are under-prepared for today’s challenges. Stress, anxiety and depression are serious problems. Dolphin Parentingtm is a powerful new way to look at child rearing. Dr. Kang looks to the intelligent, joyful and highly social dolphin for inspiration. Dolphins are not strict tiger parents who push and hover, nor are they permissive jellyfish parents. Dolphin parents are firm, yet flexible. They have rules and expectations but also value creativity and independence. They are collaborative and use role modelling to guide their kids. As a result, dolphin children develop their own internal drive and a lifelong love of learning.
Tuesday, May 12 at 7 pm Firehall Centre for the Arts 11489 84 Avenue, Delta Thursday, May 28 at 7 pm Matsqui Centennial Auditorium 32315 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford Admission is free. Reserve your spot: DolphinParentingDelta.eventbrite.com DolphinParentingAbbotsford.eventbrite.com

Combining scientific research with unforgettable life stories, she will guide parents towards a healthy, balanced parenting style. In The Dolphin Way, Dr. Shimi Kang describes three parenting styles: Jellyfish Parent • permissive • few rules or expectations • overindulgent
Dolphin Parent • authoritative • balanced • encourages collaboration, social skills, creativity and internal motivation
Tiger Parent • authoritarian • may push, over-control, overprotect or micromanage
