Friends of the Abbotsford Libraries 20th Anniversary • Clearbrook Library: It’s the Friends of the Abbotsford Libraries 20th anniversary this year! Our special volunteer group formed in 1992 to advocate for a new Clearbrook Library when it had outgrown its existing location at South Fraser Way and Trethewey Street. The Friends helped generate public support, culminating in the opening of the present Clearbrook Library in 1995. Since that time, the Friends have spent many hours fundraising to enhance equipment, collections, programs and services, as well as helping out at library events. Get to know the Friends as they celebrate throughout 2012 with special Customer Appreciation Days. Consider becoming a Friend of the Abbotsford Libraries and taking up the rewarding challenge of making our community’s libraries even better! The Friends meet the first Tuesday of the month, except for July and August. Call 604-859-7814 ext 232 for more information.

more at your library... Borrowing eBooks at the Library: What You Need to Know The world of books is changing, and the library is changing too! Not long ago, FVRL customers had to visit their local library in person to sign out books. Today, borrowing can also be done online at www.fvrl.ca. FVRL’s ever-growing digital collection includes a huge variety of fiction and non-fiction bestsellers and classics.

What are eBooks? An eBook is a book published in electronic format. eBooks can be viewed on your eReader, computer, tablet or handheld mobile device. Many eReaders use special “electronic ink” that mimics the appearance of printed ink on paper. As more people move to eReading, publishers are making more of their titles available in eBook format.

How can I borrow eBooks from the library? All you need is an FVRL card, a computer and Internet access. Go to www.fvrl.ca. Click on the “Play” tab and select the “Download Books” option. Here you will find the links to FVRL’s eBook collections. Search for specific titles or browse popular titles. These collections require a quick one-time software download to sign out titles. Books must be downloaded to your computer and then transfered to your mobile device.

What happens when I borrow an eBook? When you find a book you’d like to borrow, enter your library card

information, select a loan period (up to three weeks) and download. When the specified loan period expires, the eBook will automatically disappear from your device!

Why can’t I download my eBook right away? The library owns a limited number of copies of each eBook title. The library must purchase a license for each eBook file and cannot lend out more copies than it owns. FVRL purchases more licenses for popular titles. For others, we may own only one or two licenses. If all copies of a title are signed out, you may go on a waiting list and you’ll be notified when the title becomes available.

The Future of Publishing and Libraries Many major publishers are reluctant to provide eBooks to public libraries. Simon & Shuster, MacMillan and Penguin Group do not offer eBooks or audiobooks to libraries. Harper Collins does offer eBooks to public libraries, but they have imposed a cap of 26 “check-outs” before the library must purchase a new license. Random House, the biggest of the Big Six publishing houses, recently announced they will provide public libraries access to all their titles for a higher than normal fee. Following this move by Random House, other publishers may need to rethink their stance on making eBooks available to public libraries.

World Languages Multilingual Collections Multilingual collections are a vital part of the Fraser Valley Regional Library. Not only do our 14 different collected languages meet the needs of the native speakers of a variety of European, Asian and Middle Eastern languages, they serve new immigrants and strive to further generations with the support needed to maintain links to their families’ heritage languages. These materials are listed in the online catalogue and are kept current by an annual infusion of new titles. In 2012, a donation of $10,000 was received from the Joint Diversity and Training Trust of the Overwaitea Foods Groups and the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1518 to purchase bilingual picture books in numerous languages to benefit the families of our diverse communities.

Library Live and On Tour is the first mobile library service initiative of its kind in the world. It’s not a bookmobile. So, what is it? LiLi is the little hotrod that will shatter library stereotypes and extend the reach of Fraser Valley Regional Library beyond our walls. Find out more, including where LiLi will be this summer by visiting www.fvrl.ca/play/librarylive.htm

Library Live and on Tour is made possible by a literacy grant from the Libraries and Literacy Branch of the provincial government.

SUMMER READING TIPS FOR PARENTS Reading is a great summer activity for both kids and adults. Make it a fun adventure! Here are some ideas to get your child excited about reading while school is out: • Establish a regular reading time for the whole family. • Share stories over the dinner table or at bedtime. • Encourage your child to share their favourite stories with you.

• Help your child set summer reading goals. These might include reading for 15 minutes every day, reading a certain number of books, or exploring books on a particular topic of interest. A realistic goal will be challenging but not daunting. Reading should not feel like a chore.

• Read to your child. Even if children can read themselves, they still enjoy hearing tales told aloud. Young readers can understand more advanced vocabulary and complex stories than they are able to read. Their reading skills will improve as you continue to read to them.

• Encourage children to read aloud to younger siblings or have them read to you as you do your housework.

• Show genuine interest in the stories or programs your child discovers during the summer.

• Take your children to your nearest FVRL location to choose books or to attend Summer Reading Club programs. Ask your child to invite a friend or two and make it a fun group activity!

• Appreciate all books the child selects, even the ones that look too easy. Summer is a time for fun, after all. You can always guide your child to a more challenging book the next time you visit the library.

• Read yourself! Make sure your child knows that you enjoy reading, too. There is nothing like a good role model.
