1930 Helen was a revolutionary in library terms. She was also, by all accounts, the worst driver on the planet (more about that in a minute).

This is Helen. You probably don’t think of her too often. That’s ok. Frankly, it’s difficult to think about Helen when you are running into the library to pick up your latest holds, getting the children ready for storytime, using the public computers, attending an author reading or browsing for the perfect weekend book. But I’d like to invite you to take a moment to think about Helen and how she has everything to do with us...today...and the ground-breaking organization we call Fraser Valley Regional Library.

4

FVRL

Helen was originally from Manitoba. While still living there and working as a teacher, she found a back issue of Ladies Home Journal magazine and found an article about “What it means to be a librarian.” In 1908 she applied to library school in New York City. When she got there she saw a public library for the first time. You see, there weren’t libraries in Manitoba in those days. She was going to library school but had no idea what a library was like. After a year of training, Helen began working in the children’s department of the New York library. She stayed in New York for a year then moved to Victoria in 1910 to become an assistant librarian. She became the head librarian after a year. During the First World War she took a break from librarianship and went overseas to help as a nurse’s assistant. In 1924, she returned to the U.S. to further her education and worked on her PhD. Oh yes, we’re talking about DOCTOR Helen now. And then she returned to Victoria.

At Your Library: Programs, Events and Services

In the late ‘20s, there was a BC Library Commission based in Victoria. The commission would send boxes of books out to communities for three months and at the end, those books would be returned and a new box would be sent out. People would order books directly from the government, and people like Helen would deliver books. (That’s when it was found out that Helen was a bad driver.) When the Commission conducted a survey of everyone who used the government library service, they discovered that people in rural areas wanted as good as city-type library service. So it was decided that a regional library system would be attempted in either the Okanagan, Vancouver Island or the Fraser Valley. The Fraser Valley was chosen, which really upset the folks in the Okanagan. They figured that they were more deserving because people in the Fraser Valley had access to libraries in Vancouver and New Westminster, while folks in Vernon had to wait 2 days to get daily newspapers delivered. Nonetheless, the Fraser Valley was chosen as a test site for a regional library system. In 1930, $100,000 was granted by the Carnegie Corporation of New York for the establishment and maintenance of this rural library demonstration project to run for 5 years. And Helen was selected to implement the new system. Her method of establishing what was called the Fraser Valley Union Library was to “go to the people.” She worked tirelessly with community groups,

2015 promoting public libraries as “the most potent agency amongst all educational institutions”. She devoted remarkable energy to the community, speaking to Women’s Institutes, parent-teacher associations, service clubs, church groups, farmers’ organizations – to anyone who would listen to a vision of libraries as agents of social progress and adult education. Helen was supposedly a dynamic, passionate and inspiring speaker. She fired people up with such enthusiasm that they often left her presentations ready to set up library committees. She was also media savvy; she made sure that her speaking engagements were reported on and she contributed an impressive stream of rousing articles to the local press. She organized the district (coverage area of 2600 square miles including 24 separate governing bodies), made arrangements with existing libraries in larger towns in the Valley, selected books, hired staff and purchased the first a vehicle to be used as the first book van.

Helen died in 1971 at the age of 91. So, that’s the story of Helen. She basically invented our library system-and many others like it. We were the first regional library system in North America and we’re the largest in British Columbia today. More than anything, she was a fearless and tireless advocate for library service, realizing how important it was for everyone to have access to information. So, every now and then it might be nice, when you are running into the library to pick up your latest holds, getting the children ready for storytime, using the public computers, attending an author reading or browsing for the perfect weekend book---to give a thought to Dr. Helen Gordon Stewart.

Helen ended up with quite a list of achievements: • First chairman of the Public Library Commission • Founding member of the BCLA • Head Librarian in Victoria in the 1910s (she brought in the Dewey Decimal System and was the first to implement a “children’s room” in the library) • The Carnegie Corporation returned to Helen later and she was instrumental in setting up a library system in the Okanagan, on Vancouver Island, and • In 1944, Helen also established a library system in Trinidad and Tobago in the Eastern Caribbean.

author events Teach your children the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. FVRL welcomes Dr. Shimi Kang, M.D., for two special engagements in Delta and Abbotsford. Dr. Shimi Kang has worked directly with hundreds of children and families. She has seen firsthand the harmful effects of over-scheduling, over-instructing and overprotecting our children. Many kids lack motivation and are under-prepared for today’s challenges. Stress, anxiety and depression are serious problems. Dolphin ParentingTM is a powerful new way to look at child rearing. Dr. Kang looks to the intelligent, joyful and highly social dolphin for inspiration. Dolphins are not strict tiger parents who push and hover, nor are they permissive jellyfish parents. Dolphin parents are firm, yet flexible. They have rules and expectations but also value creativity and independence. They are collaborative and use role modelling to guide their kids. As a result, dolphin children develop their own internal drive and a lifelong love of learning. In this inspiring talk, Dr. Kang will explain the art and science of Dolphin ParentingTM. Combining scientific research with unforgettable life stories, she will guide parents towards a healthy, balanced parenting style. In The Dolphin Way, Dr. Shimi Kang describes three parenting styles: Jellyfish Parent • permissive • few rules or expectations • overindulgent

Dolphin Parent • authoritative • balanced • encourages collaboration, social skills, creativity and internal motivation

Tiger Parent • authoritarian • may push, over-control, overprotect or micromanage

Every year, thousands of Grades 4 and 5 students in BC participate in Reading Link Challenge! Teams compete in challenges which test their knowledge of six pre-selected books. Participants learn about teamwork and how to read for retention. Reading Link Challenge also promotes public library usage and encourages kids to develop a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure. This year, one of the selected books is Reading the Bones by Gina McMurchy-Barber. FVRL is thrilled to welcome Gina as she speaks to hundreds of teams at schools and libraries across our region. Gina studied archaeology and journalism before becoming a newspaper reporter and later a freelance writer. After her first son was born, she became a teacher and took up writing stories and plays for kids. Reading the Bones was her first children’s novel, and it’s the first title in the ongoing Peggy Henderson Adventure series. She is excited to be part of Reading Link Challenge and to promote the “sport of reading” throughout FVRL!

GIVE BACK TO THE LIBRARY Libraries grow when communities and individuals come together. Your local library relies both on public funding and individual donations to provide the programs and services you enjoy. FVRL is a registered charity that depends on support from generous individuals like you. Private donations do not replace the library’s core funding — instead they enhance the programs and services the library provides. By donating to FVRL, you can make a difference in your community. When you contribute, 100 per cent of your donation goes to library programs and services — not administration costs. You will receive a tax receipt for any donation of $10 or more. To learn more about FVRL’s monthly giving program or to make a donation, please visit us online at www.fvrl.ca/donate.php at your library or by calling 1-888-668-4141 (ext. 7005).

Did you know? Why does the catalogue change so often? FVRL subscribes to BiblioCommons, an enhanced and interactive library catalogue where customers can contribute comments, summaries, and make and share lists. BiblioCommons is used by public libraries locally and around the world – for example Vancouver Public Library, New York Public Library, and Christchurch City Libraries, New Zealand. Changes to the BiblioCommons interface are based on combined feedback from library customers internationally. We appreciate feedback about the catalogue – log in and submit your comments via the BiblioCommons Feedback Form. Local customer comments are reviewed regularly by FVRL staff and submitted to BiblioCommons developers for review. Feature changes are decided upon annually.

Why can I find a title as an eBook but not a print book? Are you trying to replace all print books with eBooks? The majority of FVRL’s Collection Budget is still devoted to actual physical items. There are a few reasons why the library may have a particular title only in digital format: •

it may be because the title is no longer available to purchase in print; or,

all of our print copies around the system were worn out and discarded and we have not yet purchased replacement copies; or,

the eBook version of a title was released first and the print copy has a later release date; or,

because some titles are only released as an eBook.

Whatever the reason – if you would like a particular item in any format, please let our staff know and we will see if it is available to buy. We recognize that our customer’s preferences encompass a variety of material formats and we try to provide as many formats per title as our budget allows.

How come you have to use so many different apps and/or software to download eBooks and audiobooks? To ensure that our customers get the best selection of authors, titles formats, and publishers, FVRL deals with several vendors of downloadable content. All downloadable content has “licensing” attached to it, which controls how the item is lent, transferred and if copies can be made. Vendors of downloadable content each have their own platform to work with or “administer the terms” of the licensing that was created in cooperation with the publishers they represent. By adhering to these licenses we can provide quality content to our customers for free.

celebrate our roots From the West Coast to the Western Front By Mark Forsythe & Greg Dickson It has often been observed that the First World War jolted Canada into nationhood, and as Mark Forsythe and Greg Dickson show in this compelling book, no province participated more eagerly in that transformation or felt the aftershock more harshly than BC. In From the West Coast to the Western Front, Forsythe, host of CBC Radio’s mid-day show BC Almanac, marks the 100th anniversary of World War I by teaming with historian Greg Dickson and the ever resourceful BC Almanac audience to compile a sweeping portrayal of that crucial chapter of BC history.

Making Headlines: 100 Years of the Vancouver Sun By Shelley Fralic A decade-by-decade record of the Vancouver Sun including the shifting social, economic and political movements that shaped BC and the newspaper’s coverage of it. Readers will be treated to a century’s worth of stunning and awardwinning Sun photographs, depicting major news events from the First World War to the moon landing, along with iconic British Columbia moments such as Expo 86 and the 2010 Winter Olympics. Get a behind-the-scenes look at a chaotic daily newsroom, starting in the early years when a pen and notebook were all a reporter needed to the introduction of real-time online reporting.

British Columbia Place Names By Mark Thorburn Canada’s sixth province since 1871, BC has certainly had time to stockpile its share of strange and peculiar citizens and circumstances. From the intriguing and uncanny to the downright wacky, many of these stories have served as inspiration for some of BC’s most colourful place names. For example, Lulu

FVRL

Island, on which the city of Richmond sits, was named for 16year old American actress Lulu Sweet who won the hearts of a detachment of Royal Engineers. And Lytton was named for Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton, the playwright who gave us the phrase “The pen is mightier than the sword”. Learn about these place names and more!

Xwelíqwiya, The Life Story of A Stó:lõ Matriarch By Rena Point Bolton Comprising a series of conversational recollections, this book tells the story of Rena Point Bolton, a Stó:lo matriarch and craftswoman. The narrative touches on Point Bolton’s childhood by the Fraser River during the Depression, her ancestor, the warrior Xéyteleq, and her later years on a reserve. While the Stó:lo people kept secret their cultural practices to avoid persecution by paternalistic institutions, Point Bolton helped to revive some of the old crafts and ceremonies. This book attests to Point Bolton’s desire to inspire her people to blend traditional “ways of knowing” with the pursuit of modern education.

Milk Spills & One-Log Loads: Memories of a Pioneer Truck Driver By Frank White Frank White started writing the story of his life as a pioneer BC truck driver in 1974 when he was only sixty. His boisterous yarn in Raincoast Chronicles about wrangling tiny trucks overloaded with huge logs down steep mountains with no brakes won an award and was reprinted so many times everyone urged him to write more. He started in his spare time but kept having so many new adventures he didn’t finish until 2013--his hundredth year. Frank tells the story of his life in transportation, starting in the horse and buggy age and chronicling the growth of trucking in the BC freighting and logging industries, and much more than that.
