How to help your friends at home choose the best English Language school, too... Brighton and Bournemouth are brilliant places to study English for most international students. As you already know, they have a great social life, lots of students from all over the world, and excellent language schools.

English UK makes sure that students are protected in case anything goes wrong -- which doesn’t happen often. If one of our member centres has to close, we will help students to finish their courses at another school nearby, and we will make sure that they get all the accommodation they have paid for.

You are probably so happy studying here that you want to recommend it to all your friends at home. That is a really good idea, as it’s great to get personal advice. But to really help your friends, it’s good to give them plenty of choice. Not everyone likes the same things.

We have around 460 members, which are colleges and universities of all sizes. We have lots of members in places like Bournemouth and Brighton, and also in many other towns and cities in the whole of the United Kingdom. We have a course finder on our website, www.englishuk.com, which makes it easy to find exactly the right course at exactly the right centre. If you have friends who would really like to study in Manchester, or Scotland, or Wales, or a little village, they can do that.

English UK is an organisation for the best language schools, and we can help your friends find the best English language course.

4

What’s good about English UK? You can trust an English UK member centre. Every single one is carefully inspected every four years. The inspectors check that lessons are good, that the school has enough books and teaching materials. The inspectors also make sure the school is well run and that students are looked after at school and in their accommodation.

Mexican Elizabeth Aranda García tells talk! about her experience in England. Q. What’s your name? Why did you come to the UK?

Editorial enquiries: David Hammond 07898 936 356 Advertising sales: Mathew Stracy 07719 211299 Talk! magazine is published by Talk Language Schools Ltd

10 minute interview

So when your friends ask you to tell them about studying English in the UK, do tell them about your language school -- but tell them to look at our website as well. www.englishuk.com

A. I’m Elizabeth and I’m 28 years old and I came to the UK because if I want to find a good job with a good salary in Mexico, I need to practise my English in an English speaking country. The only two choices I had from my language school in Mexico were a school in Vancouver, Canada, and a school in England. Q. Where are you from?

my English in the best place. Also I can visit other cities like London and Paris. Q. How long will you study English in the UK? A. Only for 3 weeks, because when I go back to Mexico City, I have to start a new job at the beginning of April.

A. I’m from Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, which is in North America.

Q. What level did you start at?

Q. Tell me a little about Mexico City?

A. As it’s only a 3 week course, I started at intermediate and I will finish at this level.

A. It is one of the biggest cities in the world. It has many different types of Mexican food like tacos, quesadillas, pozole, and tostadas. There are many great museums like “Castillo de Chapultepec, Museo de Historia Natural, Palacio de Bellas Artes,” but the most important thing about Mexico City is the geniality of the people. Q. Why didn’t you choose the USA to study English as it’s your neighbouring country? A. Because I know the prestige of English schools in England and I want to improve

Q. What have you liked most about your stay? A. I really enjoy the happiness of my host family, they have a great sense of humour and I always learn something new with them: for example great games like Rummikub and poker. My host mother is always kind to me and my host brothers always make me laugh. Q. Are you homesick? A. I must say, yes!!! The people are always respectful and kind to me, but I miss my family, boyfriend and dogs.

English UK: we’re committed to quality, so you can choose a course with confidence

P I R T H C A O C Solent Coaches have been established for 41 years and are based in Ringwood, on the outskirts of Bournemouth. Over the past 5 years we have been taking language students to some of the most visited areas in Europe, including Paris, Amsterdam and Edinburgh. In 2012 we decided to set up a specialised branch of our Company – Solent Student Tours – specialising in student travel. Solent Student Tours was developed using the knowledge & expertise of our regular student tour driver, who has been travelling with students for over 15 years, so has a very good understanding of students & their requirements. We have developed an independent web site so that students & Language Colleges can book directly with us – www.solentstudenttours.com. As well as the web site, students also have access to a special tour guide leaflet, giving details of all our current Tours & Day Trips. In addition to our European Tours, we also have regular day trips to London, Bath & Stonehenge, Stratford & The Cotswolds, Oxford and Windsor. Due to popular demand the regularity of these trips has increased dramatically. Dates, prices & availability of all our trips can be found in our Solent Student Tour leaflet or by visiting www.solentstudenttours.com

6

All of our luxury coaches are air conditioned and are driven by highly qualified and experienced drivers who all have a minimum of 20 years experience. We are fully insured to meet all requirements. Our tour guides have expert knowledge of their subject and even the most seasoned traveller will come home having learnt something new.

Our clients return again and again. Having experienced the delights of one trip with us they book upon their return for another exciting experience. Look out for our Solent Student Tours posters & leaflets available in your Language College now.

Why not call us and start your European experiences today. Telephone: 01425 473188 Web Site: www.solentstudenttours.com Or contact your Language College or Social Organiser.

Q. Do you think that your English has improved?

Q. Do you think that people in the UK are friendly?

A. I think that my English has improved in speaking and listening, because with my host family I always speak and try to understand everything. At the beginning it was difficult but when the days passed I understood better and I tried speaking more. In fact, I learnt in both places (school and house) because I had friends from Japan, Turkey, South Korea and Kuwait. This made me more confident, because I have never been alone in another country.

A. They are really friendly, they always help me in the store, restaurants, taxis, when I was lost I always found a smiling face.

Q. What do you plan to do next?

Q. Have you made good friends here?

A. I need to save more money and then come back for a longer time in the UK, because I want to study and improve my English and then take the Cambridge Certificate examination.

A. Yes of course, my classmates have been really nice to me, so now I have friends from many different countries.

Q. Why is it important for you to improve your English? A. If I want to get a good job with a good salary in accountancy I need to know English and if I have experience in another country it will be better for my career prospects.

Q. What is your host family like? A. I love the warmth of my host family. My host mother is an artist and her paintings are amazing. She is always singing or laughing. The rest of the family really make me laugh. I love my host family !!! When other classmates told me about their families I thanked God that I ended up with my host family. Q. What have you done while in England? A. Last weekend I went to Paris and loved it. This weekend I will be in London. I need more time to visit other places in England. Q. Anything to add? A. One of my wishes at the New Year was to practise English in another country and this has been fulfilled!!!

“I’m from Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, which is in North America

8

This has been a great trip, because it is the first time that I have ever seen snow and I felt happy. I live in a place which has a temperature between 27 and 10 degrees, and it never snows there unless you are at the top of the volcano. And finally, I had the opportunity to experience another culture.

Specialisation

Bangor is home to the No.1 Business School in the UK for research in Accounting, Banking and Finance (RAE 2008). Aside from Banking, the University is world renowned for its research in Electronic Engineering (No.2 in the UK), Psychology, Ocean and Biological Sciences. If you’re the outdoor type, Bangor could be the place for you. It’s close to the sea and the mountains. The cost of living is low, and part-time work is fairly easy to come by, so it might be easier on your wallet than some places, too. The town is actually one of the UK’s smallest cities, but has the longest high street! As for the university itself, major investment has provided more student accommodation (now guaranteed for new international students) and it is expanding academically, too: funding for 50 new academic posts has been announced and new courses are being introduced every year. The university counts Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of Slumdog Millionaire, among its alumni.

Scholarships

The International scholarship scheme is worth more than £1 million a year. Students are considered for scholarships of up to £5000 a year upon application, based on previous academic qualifications and personal achievements. The university is also part of the Santander scholarships scheme which means that students from a number of Latin American are eligible to apply for an additional £5000 scholarships from the Santander Universidades scheme. Facilities An arts and innovation centre is currently under construction. Three main library sites provide a mix of formal and informal Wi-Fi-

enabled study spaces with extensive access to online databases and journals. More than 1,000 PCs/Macs are available for student use and laptops are available for student loan. Computer rooms are well equipped, some of which can be accessed 24/7, and there is broad wireless coverage across campus. The university also has a main sports centre as well as indoor and outdoor facilities for a whole range of sports and fitness activities.

Transport

Although not a campus university, most parts of the university are within walking distance of each other. Bangor is on the main rail line between London and Holyhead, and has good road links to the motorway network along the A55.

Fun facts

Broadgate Towers, home to Bangor Business School’s London Centre, is located in the heart of the Financial District and is the fourth tallest building in London! It also features in the latest James Bond movie Skyfall. Prince William and Catherine Middleton currently live in Anglesey, just half an hour away from Bangor. The princess is often spotted at the local supermarket!

TOUCH the tech Tablets – A small and compact device giving users lots of digital enjoyment, such as browsing the Internet, listening to music and playing games – the tablet is a must have gadget for many people. The tablet has universal appeal. It is used by the young and the old for leisure activities and for business use. But firstly, what is a tablet? Well, as you may know a tablet is a portable personal computer. It uses a touch screen for an input device and it does not have a physical keyboard. It is thin and flat in shape. It is similar in operation to a ‘smartphone,’ as both share similar operating systems and processors. The tablet market is growing and there is a lot of product competition. This offers a lot of choice for the consumer, but which one should we choose to use? This simple guide will review some of the leading tablet brands.

The Apple iPad mini The iPad mini is the latest product from Apple and the price starts from £269. It has a 7.9 inch screen and is smaller than the iPad, which has a 9.7 inch screen. It is 7.2 millimetres thick and is about as wide as a pencil! It weighs 308g and is the lightest of the tablets reviewed here. This is, surprisingly, more than half the weight of the original iPad. The screen resolution is 1024 x 768, which is the same resolution as Apple’s iPad 2 with 163 ppi. This can be a good thing, as a lot of the iPad specific apps will work because of this technology. The pixel display for the iPad mini is great. It has a higher number of 14

pixels than the previous iPad and allows for a range of viewing angles, displaying clear and colourful images. It has a 1.2 megapixel front camera for ‘Facetime’ use, (a video calling application from Apple product to Apple product) and it has a 5 megapixel iSight camera on the back. The iPad mini takes good photos even in dark lighting conditions.

Other features include dual-band Wi-Fi, 4G function and an A5 chip processor. Interaction with the iPad mini is smooth and quick.

Disappointingly, the camera does not feature panorama mode, however, there are many apps that can be downloaded that will put photographs together for you, for example, ‘Microsoft’s Photosynth’ will enable 360-degree image angles.

It includes Siri, which is Apple’s voice assistant. Siri helps users with any requests they make and features the latest IOS 6 operating system technology. The iPad mini even knows if your thumb is touching the side of the screen! It is very light weight, very thin and has a good battery life - a lot of features are better than the iPad and we can see why this tablet is a market leader.

It also features 1080p HD video recording and uses LED backlighting, the same as the iPad to show a clear image.

It also has a great battery life. It can run for 10 hours from a single charge, meaning it can be charged less and can be used more whilst you are ‘on the go.’

Google Nexus 7 The Google Nexus 7 is a very popular tablet and is produced by a company called Asus. The price starts from £159 for the basic 16GB of data storage. It has a screen size of 7 inches and weighs 336g, which is again very light. The Nexus 7 has a screen resolution of 1280x800 offering 216ppi. It will show great on screen detail and is the highest resolution of the tablets reviewed. The Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 (which is made by Samsung) are the only tablets out now, that use the latest version of the Android operating system, Jelly Bean, 15

4.2. This has improved speed and user interactivity compared with the old Android 4.1 operating system. However, this operating system removes ‘Adobe Flash,’ which means that some games and video content cannot be used. Users need to be aware of what content will and will not be displayed when using this tablet. This Nexus 7 allows users to turn the device into a digital photo frame using the ‘Daydream’ software. This adds personal decoration and shows different ways the device can be used. Also, users can set up lots of different user accounts, just like you can do on a personal computer so that each user can have their own settings and digital use. The camera quality is not as good as other tablets. It has one camera on the front and does not have one on the back. The camera is 1.2 megapixel and will film 720p video. This would still allow for a good, clear image. The Nexus 7 has a battery life of 7 hours once it has been fully charged if it has been used a lot during the day. This tablet is great if you want to connect to the internet whilst you are ‘on the go,’ and when a Wi-Fi spot is not available, as you can buy a 3G version for £239 from a lot of shops. The Nexus 7 is low cost, thin and light in shape, and with 3G access it would be a popular tablet for a lot of people. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be the latest release from Samsung and will be available in the United Kingdom in Spring. The first model will be a Wi-Fi only version, a 3G version that includes a SIM card slot will follow in the very near future, it has a screen 2.5 inches bigger than the current Galaxy Note 2. 16

The screen will be 8 inches, with up to 32GB of storage and will weigh 338g. It is the heaviest tablet reviewed and is not as easy to hold as the iPad mini or the Nexus 7.

ONE FLEW OVER PIZZA EXPRESS...

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has the same design as other Samsung devices. It looks like a bigger ‘Galaxy S3’ mobile phone. It also comes with the new ‘S-Pen,’ which will now allow users to write digitally on the screen with Samsungs TouchWiz UI technology. This level of interactivity is not seen in the other tablets reviewed. The Galaxy Note 8 will run on Android Jelly Bean, 4.1.2, just like the Nexus 7 currently does. The latest operating system allows smoother use. The screen resolution is 1280 x 800 with 189ppi, which is more than the iPad mini. It allows for high quality sharp text and images. It has the best camera of the tablets reviewed with a 5 megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front. Also, the device is 3G and users will be able to buy a Wi-Fi only version if they want to. A great feature is that users can display different apps at the same time. Users could be playing a game or watching a film on one half of the screen, whilst typing on the other. The two screen function will allow users the chance to be able to multi-task. However, there will not be as many apps as the iPad and Apple have. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be useful if you want a brilliant daily planner and is set to be a popular tablet device and is a tablet to ‘look out’ for. So, that was a list of three main brands in the tablet market. All have different and similar features and will appeal to people for lots of reasons. The tablet market is getting more competitive as the market grows.

Pigeon gets trapped above Pizza Express A round body, a small head with stubby legs and beak are features of the rock pigeon. The rock pigeon is also called the city pigeon and is the most common species. In the UK there are estimated to be between 2.2 million and 2.7 million breeding territories for the pigeon population. Now that is a lot of pigeons. The small birds are dependent on shelter, space and food. As pigeons mainly eat food scraps, they rely on what they can find left over at food premises. A possible reason as to why one little pigeon got stuck above a Pizza Express restaurant: Was the bird just trying to have its dinner? Crowds gathered around to watch 11 fire fighters who were called in to rescue the trapped pigeon, high up on the third floor of the building by the popular restaurant Pizza Express.

17

Staff of the restaurant called the RSPCA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, when they saw that the pigeon was in danger and could not get free as it was trapped behind netting and needed help. The RSPCA, then called for assistance from the Fire and Rescue service in order to save the little bird. Two fire engines arrived quickly, from two different stations and began the rescue mission after clearing the area of pedestrians. Fire warning signs of “Fire service. Hazardous Area. Keep Clear, were put around the area to stop people walking through the area as the fire fighters began the rescue. Nearby, the fire service had been training and so they were able to use this equipment to rescue the helpless bird. An aerial ladder and platform were positioned and a machine lifted it up into the air, to reach up to the third floor and to free the pigeon. Fire fighters also found a dead bird whilst they were trying to free the trapped one; this is a great shame and shows how dangerous netting can be for animals if they get caught up in it. Luckily for this pigeon, the restaurant staff had found it in time.

The public clapped and cheered when the pigeon was freed and a good job was done by all. You may think that 11 fire fighters called to rescue one small pigeon is a lot. The RSPCA says though, that every life is important and that this was shown here through the help, support and kindness of all involved.

RSPCA inspector Jo Story, helps rescue the pigeon.

The fire service is happy to help where they can and they get many phone calls from the RSPCA to come and save lots of animals that are in danger. As long as they are not doing anything more urgent at the time, the fire and rescue service will help all living things. So, next time you are in town, make sure you look around and up high for any animals that may be trapped in netting or even in other places such as grids. You too, may be needed to help save a life one day!

Jo Story, an RSPCA inspector went up on the ladder platform with the fire fighters to the save the pigeon. The fire fighters took their time and freed the bird, which was then placed safely into a cardboard box and taken away to be looked after to make sure that it was not harmed. 18
