Óbidos Lagoon Óbidos Lagoon is the most extensive coastal lagoon system of the Portuguese coast. It has a total area of approximately 6.9 km2 and an average depth of two meters, with elevations ranging from two feet to five feet.
It is located between the Caldas da Rainha to the north (the parishes of Foz do Arelho and Nadadouro) and the county south of Óbidos (parishes of Vau and Santa Maria).
The fauna consists of several fish species. Birds are the group that, in terms of fauna, represents the most important ecological role in the ecosystem. Species were identified, among others, the heron, mallard, oystercatcher, long leg, curlew, tern, egret, “gaivinha de bico preto”. Excellent place for “Bird Watching”.
Fishing and shellfish harvesting are the main economic activities related to the Ă“bidos Lagoon and they are entirely dependent on this environment. The harvesting of bivalve mollusks continues to take place as the principal local economy.
In Ă“bidos Lagoon, there are aquatic sports practiced throughout the year, including: Sailing, Windsurfing, Canoeing, Rowing, Kiteboard and Jetski.
Berlengas Berlengas are a small Portuguese archipelago located about 10/15 miles west of Peniche. This island is divided into three small islets, “Berlenga Grande” and adjacent reefs, “Estelas” and “Farilhões-Forcados”.
The main island has many caves around the pink granite which are one of the major attractions, but its waters are abundant in fish, peaceful and transparent that recalls the most famous tropical islands. There are trails for about 2 km, where you can dazzle all the spectacular beauty of Berlengas. One of the main attractions is the small beach of Carreiro do Mosteiro, where you can enjoy a few hours of sun during the summer or even bathe in their peaceful and clear water in shades of transparent green. It is also worth mentioning the many small beaches that exist around the island, where you can enjoy a little more privacy. This is undoubtedly a real dream place, unique in Portugal!
