The concept is based on interlocking spaces and exhibiting people’s circulation of movement on the front of the building. This amplifies the notion of mixing public and privates spaces. Thus aiming in draw a t t e n t i o n t o C a p e To w n ’ s a d i v e r s e tcommunity. The circulation of the Hotel is on the exterior and is visible through a facade of glazing. This makes the hotel more inviting and the function of the hotel more open to the public. The rooms are stacked as blocks on top of each other. Rooms that require privacy are covered on the exterior with vegetation. Hotel Project

D e s i g n P r o c e s s : T h e v i s i o n f o r C a p e To w n is to transcend the static of the mundane experience, an evolution towards the urban and the making of a new nature. The unused stagnant spaces within a city, are filled with potential growth for evolution. The ability to communicate spatial dynamics allows for the discovery of chora space. T h e s t a t i c b o u n d a r i e s i n C a p e To w n l e a d to the discovery of the site, the unfinished freeway ends and the undefined spaces between them. Archigram’s ‘Moving City’ was a great inspiration for the development of the intervention as a living creature in an ever changing environment. The programme for the site is a theatre space underneath the broken highways.

Design Development It is the communication of the intangible that links the programme with the highway. The stagnant space and the dynamic interchange of the performance area culminates in the evolution of the event.

The freeway ends are a hybrid space, where a synthetic ecology creates a theatre area. Its occupation is impermanent, a fleeting moment in the evolution of the city.

Major Project Fire Forensics Lab
A i m o f p r o j e c t : To f o c u s o n t h e development of an interpretive process where the qualities of spaces in a building are emphasized more than the interface (i.e. faรงade) that holds them together. Architectural Agenda: A faรงade responds to a specific environment. This project states that the real value of a building does not lie only in the external faรงade of the structure, but also lies in the making of the internal spaces, because only here the true occupation and use of a building can be realized
Many historical buildings in my town have burnt down recently, owing to lack of maintenance and negligence. This inspired the programme for my project
Conceptual Section, Pen, Paper & Charcoal
The objective of the design is therefore to find a viable programme that emphasizes the creation of permanent spaces. The proposed site and programme becomes an inversion of the hard faรงade edge commonly found in Wynberg, Main road, C a p e To w n . T h e s i t e w a s c h o s e n for the close approximation to historical buildings.

The buildings permanence comes from the making of the programme, which is a fire forensics lab and temporary accommodation for fire victims. The programme speaks of the same longevity as the context which it is built in. The architectural language is to internalize and contradict the hard edge that the main road creates. This is achieved by using permeable materials, and contrading materials - combustible matterials to those which are not (wood vs. steel & glass). This allows the celebration the occupation of spaces and to show off the persistence to endure.

Pool Pavilion
Professional Work House Brosens Tennis Pavilion
Residential project Principal architect: Stuart Thompson I was responsible for council submission drawings for both the house’s tennis and pool pavilion. I spent the major part of my practical year working on this project. Participation ranged from meeting with consultants, 3d modelling, Retrospective of project and updating of existing CAD files.

Green Goal Exhibition, Fifa World Cup 2010, Cape Town Principal Architect: Andre Rademeyer, andre@studiostar.co.za
Project developed by ST&AR Architects, under the leadership of Andre Rademeyer. The green goal was a project showcasing Cape To w n ’ s g o a l s f o r e s t a b l i s h i n g a g r e e n e r c i t y. T h e e x h i b i t i o n w a s h e l d d u r i n g t h e S o c c e r W o r l d C u p , l o c a t e d n e x t t o C a p e To w n ’ s Fanpark. The building in made of a scaffold frame covered with 1400 milk crates filled with 17000 white plastic milk bottles. The exhibition was dismantled after the world cup. All materials were re-used or recycled. My role in the project was to design the 3d model, CAD drawings and develop sketches for the contractors to understand the stages of construction. The concept for the proposal was developed in 2 weeks and the exhibition was constructed in 5 days. Photo’s courtesy of Stephen Lamb.
