2022: A LOOK AT Brunswick Main Street
Brunswick Main Street, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is part of Main Street America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation that supports communities in their efforts to revitalize struggling downtowns while retaining their unique, historic characters.
One of the greatest issues currently facing downtown Brunswick is a lack of turn-key commercial real estate. There is no shortage of small business entrepreneurs interested in locating in Brunswick. What hampers them is a lack of code-compliant properties and rental spaces that won’t cost a start-up a fortune in rehabilitation costs.
Brunswick Main Street and the City of Brunswick work in concert to address this challenge. Brunswick Main Street offers the Façade and Interior Improvement grant, an annual pot of around $50,000 to help Main Street district residential and commercial property owners and business owners afford structural improvements. This money has put new windows, roofing, flooring, electrical, and HVAC systems (and more) into many of downtown Brunswick’s buildings. Such grant funds work in tandem with City initiatives to purchase neglected spaces and resell them to committed buyers at reasonable market rates. Brunswick Main Street celebrates and supports the dedicated business owners who are committed to working downtown. In addition to the Facade & Interior Improvement grant, Main Street uses the power of its volunteers to secure additional grant funding and make it available to business owners to address what they’ve identified as some of their biggest challenges: COVID relief, marketing, and staffing. In the last year, Brunswick Main Street launched a downtown gift card program that makes it easy to make purchases at multiple participating businesses. BMS then bolstered card sales by securing matching grant funds to attract shoppers downtown and help their dollars go further.
Brunswick Main Street also embraces as part of its strategy promotion and event creation driven by three of our greatest community strengths: outdoor recreation, heritage tourism, and the arts. From Cyclist Welcome bags and the Downtown History Challenge walking tour to community events like Bike to Work Day, the Brunswick Farmers’ Market & After-Market Music, Milton Frech Jr. Potomac Street Mile, and Downtown Holiday Marketplace, BMS sponsors multiple reasons for visitors and residents alike to enjoy what we have to offer. By working together, we can show the world why downtown Brunswick is a great place to live, work, shop, and play.
