WHY DC’S WINE COUNTRY® IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR A WEDDING

When Robbie proposed to me in August of 2021, I knew immediately that we were going to have our wedding in Loudoun. This is the destination where we grew up, fell in love and now work. We bought our first apartment in Loudoun – this is home.

Knowing that we wanted to get married in Loudoun was the easy choice, but finding the perfect venue was our challenge because Loudoun offers every setting we could imagine. Did we want a resort or a winery? A bed and breakfast or a barn? The options are endless.

We loved the vibe of Lansdowne Resort and Salamander Resort & Spa. The idea of having all our family and friends stay with us on property sounded like a dream, but we envisioned a more rustic-chic, barn wedding, which turned our attention to Shadow Creek in the rolling hills of Purcellville.

From the moment we stepped out of the car, we knew it was our venue. It was serene and quiet, yet Shadow Creek spoke for itself. The barn is a newly constructed barn, built in 2013, and sits on a private, 200-acre farm, with Blue Ridge Mountain views all around. It also has a manicured courtyard – perfect for cocktail hour. It was everything we wanted and more. As a bonus, the staff has an amazing rain contingency plan – a must for an October wedding in Virginia. Right after our tour, we booked Shadow Creek and set our date for October 2023.

When it came to our engagement photos, we knew we wanted the rich history of Loudoun to be part of our story. We had our pictures taken at Morven Park, just outside historic Leesburg. The large marble house, gardens and fields made it so that each image looked like a separate location, yet in reality everything was shot on this gorgeous 1,000-acre estate.

Excited to start planning the rest of our big day, I reached out to Dana Henry, Visit Loudoun’s social sales and client cervices manager, to help with choosing the rest of our vendors.

Unique among visitor bureaus in the U.S., Visit Loudoun offers a complimentary service assisting couples planning their big day by connecting them to local venues, hotels and vendors – everything from caterers, photographers and florists to hair stylists, vintage bar stands and limousine services – all free of charge. The program, overseen by Henry, started more than a decade ago to capitalize on the burgeoning weddings market in Loudoun, and it has only expanded since, simplifying what can be a costly and time-consuming process.

Within a few days Henry sent me lists of potential vendors –wedding planners, florists, caterers, photographers –and even potential B&Bs and hotels for guests to stay.

Through Visit Loudoun, I found event coordinator B. Mingled Weddings & Events, florist Rick’s Flowers and secured hotel room blocks in Leesburg for our guests.

With it finally being 2023 and our wedding only months away, I am in full wedding mode, but I could not be happier with our venue and vendors. Most importantly, I could not be happier that our wedding is being held in Loudoun.

Troy and Megan were high school sweethearts. “We met through mutual friends who suspected we would make a great couple. A month after meeting, we started dating and the rest is history!” In July, they will be celebrating 10 years together. “It’s been an incredible journey to be on together. We are each other’s best friends and walking through life side by side has been the best thing in the world!”

Troy and Megan were together seven years before he finally popped the question. “We were going on a trip to Litchfield, Maine to spend the week with some of our closest friends at their families lakehouse. I honestly had no speculations of anything, since it was nothing unusual for us. One evening we all planned to go out to dinner. As I was getting ready, I remember complaining about doing my hair, and my friend Ashlyn was very persistent on me straightening it, so I did. We all headed to the dock to snap some photos and it wasn’t until the moment Troy walked outside that it hit me – he was wearing dress shoes! If you know Troy, he

does not wear dress shoes. Troy met me at the dock, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! Most magical day ever.”

THE WEDDING

Eight-two people helped the couple celebrate at 48 Fields. The couple knew they wanted a barn wedding from the second they got engaged. 48 Fields stood out to them because of the layout and unique areas it offered. “They have the house that we got ready in, a two-story barn, and a beautiful outdoor area for cocktail hour. It was just everything I wanted, a smaller wedding that was super simple, timeless, and just clean – a space I could fill beautifully.

Megan’s absolute favorite part of the wedding was walking into our reception. “Walking down the aisle it’s like you have blinders on. I was so focused on getting up there and marrying my best friend I didn’t have a chance to take it all in. But, it immediately hit me when I walked into our reception. My face lit up, and I was just blown away by seeing all the seats filled and all our family and friends gathering together for the celebration of our future as husband and wife. A lot of our families met for the first time at our wedding and it was so special and sweet to see these connections start to kindle.”

THE MOMENTS

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER COUPLES PLANNING THEIR WEDDING?

Have fun! I was so consumed with feeling stressed and overwhelmed at times that I forgot what I was even trying to accomplish. Hire a professional to help! Shawn at An Exceptional Event was a phenomenal wedding coordinator. I think the one “mistake” I made was not hiring her to help me plan my wedding from start to finish. Even though I know I could of managed, she is an expert in the wedding industry and she really helped put my mind at ease.

THE PROPOSAL

William and Evan met in Washington, DC while Evan was in grad school. “On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in March 2017, we had our first date at the Netherlands Carillon, a bell tower and park next to the Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Little did either of us know this casual first date would be the start of a budding romance and our journey together! The couple got engaged in March of 2021. For months William had been secretly planning the big day –measuring Evan’s ring finger as he slept, shopping for a ring, and planning the cover story – a picnic on a lovely Saturday. “And there we were –four years and two days after we first met, back at that same park.” With a tripod and iPhone setup to “take a photo” of the two of us, William secretly pressed record, posed with Evan for the fake photo, and then got down on one knee. He said yes!

THE WEDDING

William and Evan both love the outdoors and enjoy hiking so they wanted an outdoor wedding with scenic views. “It was important that it be far enough from our busy city life, but still close enough that our in-town friends could attend.” Loudoun County fit that bill perfectly. Kalero Vineyards offered gorgeous views for our outdoor ceremony, several outdoor patios for cocktail hour, and a spacious and rustic barn for the reception.

“We have two distinctly different backgrounds and cultures. Our marriage brought that together and we wanted to showcase that in our wedding.” The couple enjoyed incorporating both western traditions and ceremony mixed with some Asian traditional costumes and decorations. William’s uncle officiated and they each had a best man. After cocktail hour the festivities transitioned inside for dinner and that’s where the couple had a secret costume change – out of tuxedos and into the traditional Chinese wedding attire. “It was a big surprise and everybody loved it!”

THE PROPOSAL

Peyton and Dan met in Daytona, Florida during spring break in 2017. They both attended James Madison University. Peyton was immediately enamored with his friendliness, out-going nature, and goofiness. “Specifically, his impressions and accents.” Their time together has always been special and exciting, even while they were long-distance.

The Major family had the privilege of really getting to know Dan during quarantine and it brought the two’s relationship to the next level. During this time, they bought their first home, Dan started his business venture, and Peyton started postgrad life working at her own start-up, and of course, they got engaged!

They got engaged in August 2021 in the Bahamas in the Versailles Gardens. Dan knows Peyton has a love for classical antiquity and art history and this was mirrored in planning a special location to propose.

THE WEDDING

The day was filled with glamour, romance, and energy! “Unique touches like our custom logo demonstrated our love for equestrian hunt country and the place that we spent years together growing.” The Model A Ford was donated and transformed into a whiskey bar by Peyton’s grandfather, Lew Parker, owner and founder of Willowcroft Winery, the first vineyard in Loudoun County.

Peyton wore her mom’s lucky penny in her shoe, the same one her mom wore for her wedding. She also fastened the blue sapphire to her bouquet Peyton’s dad gave her mom for their first anniversary.

The opulent floral design was executed beautifully and transformed the modern barn to a vintage floral vision with Swarovski chandeliers and greenery alike hanging from the rafters.

Peyton and her Dad took weeks of dancing lessons so they could nail the Father Daughter Dance. The dance started with a traditional “My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw and then transitioned into a modern pop choreography by Usher, “Yeah!” The rest of the night was a blur of charisma, song, dance, and excitement until the early hours of the morning.

Their wedding day was filled with glamour, romance and energy.

Kritika and Roger had a stunning Indian Fusion fall wedding Kalero Vineyard. Their wedding was full of vibrant colors and beautiful Henna designs.

The couple wanted their wedding to honor a combination of their cultures – the bride is Hindu and the groom is German American. Their ceremony perfectly combined important pillars of a traditional Indian and western wedding.

Hindu weddings traditionally use bright, vibrant colors accessorized with gold jewelry as white is for

mourning. The bride’s forehead and neck were adorned with lots of jewelry. The bride also has at least two dress changes throughout the wedding. Kritika changed out of her ceremony dress and into an equally stunning and intricate reception dress.

The groom wore a long shirt extended to the knees and a Kafni with Pijamo leggings. The bride wore a red sari which represents happiness and good luck.

During the ceremony, the bride and groom joined hands and circled around the sacred fire in a ritual fire called Mangalphera. Their Hindu Priest then officiated for an hour or so. Once the Hindu ceremony was over, Kritika, Roger, and their wedding party quickly transitioned to a short and sweet western-style ceremony with their friend Greg officiating.

Henna is traditionally applied on the bride’s hands and feet, as Henna is believed to promote fertility and evoke evil spirits for the couple. The stronger the color of the henna the stronger the bond between the newlyweds. The deeper the henna color, the better the relationship with the mother in law.

Heather and Raleigh met in 2020 on a group hike hosted by their campus ministry. “We talked a little throughout the evening, but nothing out of the ordinary since it was a group event. The next day, Raleigh asked for my number using Group Me, which was the only way he had to contact me at the time. I got a call from him later that day asking me to have coffee. We ended up getting kicked out of the coffee shop because we had been talking so long we didn’t notice that they had closed.”

“Raleigh told me he wanted to take me to a salsa dancing class at 11 am. He picked me up a bit ahead of time and asked if I wanted to grab breakfast before going dancing. I didn’t even bother to ask where because it’s always Waffle House. We walked down the row of tables and reached one that was set up with a white tablecloth, candle, sparkling cider, and champagne glasses. That was when I knew. Raleigh got down on one knee and popped the question.”

THE WEDDING

One hundred twenty guests, including a 12-person wedding party, helped the couple celebrate their August outdoor nuptials. “We were thankful to have our personal pastor from our church in Blacksburg officiate our wedding. It was extremely important to us to have a serious ceremony that properly conveyed the purpose of our marriage, not one for photographs. It was also important to us to use traditional vows that conveyed the permanence of our marriage and our individual dedication to choose to be together even on days that don’t feel as magical as our wedding day.”

The couple chose a color palette of light pinks and natural greens. “Neither of us like flashy, so we wanted earthy colors that would enhance the natural beauty of the venue and the people there, not overtake the visuals of the whole wedding.”

Heather is a sales consultant for a home improvement company, and Raleigh is a civil engineering student. They reside in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Pop the question in the tumbling vines of Stone Tower Winery atop the spectacular Hogback Mountain, then celebrate with a glass of 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon in the elegant-style Harvest Barn. For an even more intimate proposal, Three Creeks Winery tucked away on a winding road has a rustic barn tasting room on the banks of a small creek. For a picture-perfect engagement, use the beautiful white mansion at Morven Park as your backdrop. Purely Picnics can create an insta-worthy picnic setup on the park’s extensive lawn where you can pop the question over charcuterie and bubbles.

There’s plenty of adrenaline action for friends coming to town. Kick off the day before your big day at Autobahn Speedway in Sterling where you can race your mates to the finish line in Italian-style electric go-karts. Nearby, practice your draw
