Ask the EXPERT
With weddings becoming increasingly personalized, things that were once considered traditional “must haves” and “must dos” are sometimes no longer part of a couple’s day. What current trends are you seeing with 2024, and even moving into 2025 weddings?
THE FINER POINTS EVENT PLANNING & DESIGN
Lynn Iannizzi, Owner
In terms of the ceremony, many times family friends or relatives perform the ceremony and these individuals get ordained for one day in order to do so. It’s an easy process
and it’s so much more personal to have someone close to the couple perform the ceremony.
We are also seeing more couples forgoing favors for their guests and putting more money

into their food and beverage for the wedding. Three- and fourcourse meals for guests instead of just salad and entrée. Signature his and her drinks are in and even naming these drinks after their pets has been super popular! Wedding cakes are much smaller and usually a ceremonial cake to cut these days. Dessert tables with assorted miniature desserts, cupcakes, donuts, and mini pies are the trend.

A must have that seems to be fading is ‘personals’ for parents and grandparents such as corsages and boutonniere. Cakes also seem to have become replaced with donuts and mini desserts.

Certainly!
Weddings in 2024 and beyond are characterized by a shift towards personalization and creativity, as couples prioritize meaningful experiences over tradition. Intimate micro-weddings and weekend celebrations are on the rise, allowing couples to focus on quality time with loved ones.
Couples are embracing nontraditional attire and incorporating cultural fusion into their celebrations, reflecting their individuality and heritage. Personalized entertainment adds a unique touch, creating memorable experiences for guests. Overall, weddings in this era are about celebrating love authentically, with each event reflecting the couple’s story and values.
BAKERTURE
PHOTO & DESIGN

One trend that we are seeing is various patterns or mix and matched bridesmaids gowns. This trend is so gorgeous and fun for all. It creates such a unique bridal style and it allows each bridesmaid to add their own personality and find the best style for their body. This year it’s all about setting a mood, tone and creating personality for your wedding party.
FLEUR DE CUISINE
Natalie Ramos
With times changing, we are finding that brides are no longer focusing on a traditional wedding. Wedding food stations are becoming very popular. It lifts the burden off of the traditional speeches and the traditional timeline. It allows for the guests to eat at their leisure and allows for more of the ‘fun’ elements to a wedding.
SIDEBAR EVENTS
Stephanie Sams, Event Coordinator
REHEARSAL/ WELCOME PARTY
The old formal rehearsal dinner is falling to the wayside and becoming a rehearsal/welcome party. By combining the rehearsal and welcome together we see the wedding party having the space alone for an hour or so and then opening it up to anyone who has arrived for the wedding early.
FAREWELL BRUNCH
The other thing we are seeing recently is a farewell brunch where the couple can see everyone one last time before the weekend comes to an end.
MUSIC
Having the ability to have their own curated playlist seems to be a main request. All of our spaces have Spotify, so we encourage our couples to choose a station or playlist they want so we can put it on during the event.
Ask The Expert
SIGNATURE DRINKS
One of the things all of our booked events rave about is the complimentary “Signature Drink Tasting”. This is a tasting for the bride and groom to meet with our head bartender where they go over what flavor profile choices and cocktails that are available for the event. The couple can also decide on the name of their cocktails and companies will print out custom menus for their wedding.
TRANSPORTATION
Making transition to locations for out of town guests is definitely a part of the decision making. Booking blocks of rooms, and then securing transportation for the hotel to the different venue locations and back seems to be a really considerate detail that I see a lot of couples making now.
MENU
We get a lot of requests for Gluten Free, Vegetarian, Vegan, and Peanut free menus.
ENVIRONMENTAL & CLASSY
Nobody wants to have paper plates, plastic wear, etc. They are environmentally driven and want us to use things that are not only sustainable, but look higher end.
Ask the Expert
CATOCTIN CREEK DISTILLING
Scott Harris
We are seeing an increasing number of couples who wish to have smaller, more intimate weddings at unique and non-traditional venues. Catoctin Creek Distillery has hosted dozens of smaller weddings recently, where the couple wed in a makeshift altar right in front of the beautiful copper distilling equipment, and then adjourn to our historic Art-Deco tasting room for drinks and refreshments. We are also seeing an increase in weddings for LGBT couples.

HOW THEY MET
Mary and Jamale met in Buffalo, New York when Mary was in grad school. “We met on an online dating platform and talked for a few weeks through text while I was at home for the holidays. We then met back up in Buffalo at a coffee shop for our first date. We talked for about four hours until the shop closed. On our second date, Jamale came back to my apartment to meet my dog Luca. I knew from the moment he interacted with Luca that this was the man for me.
Since both Jamale and Mary are from Upstate, New York, it is no surprise that they are both Buffalo Bills fans. “Jamale made plans to propose during the Bills game where I was surrounded by family and friends. I was so surprised and even more amazing – the Bills won!
THE WEDDING
Seventy-five people, along with four bridesmaids and four groomsmen, helped the couple celebrate their June wedding. “48 Fields Farm was our first venue tour and we both
Real Weddings
immediately knew that it was the place we wanted to be married. It is absolutely stunning and there are so many options for different layouts and weather plans, so you never felt like you’d have to sacrifice. “Our ceremony was small, but it was perfectly us. Jeffery Mazal, our officiant was amazing at customizing our ceremony to us. It had humor, love, and our families which is what Jamale and I are all about. Plus, he knew we didn’t do a first look, so he made Jamale turn around until I was closer to the front of the aisle. Seeing Jamale’s face light up when he turned around was one of the highlights of my night.”
Mary wanted a romantic feel to the wedding day and chose soft sage green and dusty blue colors, accented by crisp fluffy white flowers. One of the sweetest elements of their day was found at each of the reception tables. Mary is a teacher and asked her young students to fill in what they thought love was, like “kindnis”, “nise”, and “beautiful”.
“One of the things we look back on and laugh at now (not so funny day of) was that Jamale forgot his shoes for his suit. Luckily one of his groomsmen wears the same size and had an extra pair of shoes in the car to save the day.”
“The overall feeling of our day was love! Fun love. We were surrounded by the people who love us the most and wanted to celebrate us.” Mary’s bridesmaids and best friends surprised the couple with disposable cameras and a list for each table to take photos. They turned it into a photo album for them so they can see their wedding from our guests’.

THE PROPOSAL
Kendall and Brantlee were set up by a co-worker while working at DAVIS Construction. The co-worker invited Brantlee to a Nat’s game that Kendall was attending back in May of 2018, and the rest is history! “We have a goal to visit all of the National Parks and invited my mom and her boyfriend to meet us in Maine to visit Bar Harbour and Acadia National Park. Kendall proposed at the top of Cadillac Mountain right after sunrise! “Following the proposal, we hiked around Jordan Pond and had champagne and lobster rolls to celebrate at Abel’s overlooking the waterfront.
THE WEDDING
One hundred and fifteen people, along with a 10-person bridal party, helped the couple celebrate their September wedding at Tranquility Farm. “We wanted to get married in Northern Virginia because it is the halfway point for our families, and also convenient for our local friends.
39 Love Loudoun Weddings 2023
I also grew up riding horses, so have always loved the Loudoun County area with the beautiful countryside and many wineries.
Tranquility Farm was perfect venue for the couple as it allows couples to enjoy the property for the entire weekend – with rooms for up to 20 people to stay. “We loved the idea of having our immediate family able to stay on site together. We kicked off the weekend by doing a low country boil as a low-key rehearsal dinner and then invited all guests in town to come for a welcome party!” When it came to the wedding day, all the groomsmen and bridesmaids got ready in the main house, with the guys hunkered down watching the Penn State football game, and the girls getting hair and make-up done in the beautiful sitting room. It was laid and back and fun to have everyone hanging around together all day.
Their ceremony took place on a hill under a tree overlooking the farm property and a vineyard in the background. Long farmhouse tables in the barn were adorned with lush florals, and the chandeliers were decorated with greenery. The groom’s twin brother and older brother gave heartfelt and emotional speeches – one with the help of assisted technology proving that there is no barrier to brotherly love and a great sense of humor!

Real Weddings
THE PROPOSAL
Faith and Eric met in their freshman year of college and were good friends throughout college. “We didn’t start dating until a year after we graduated.”
Eric proposed on a super hot and humid day in July, under a little pagoda at a park that Faith used to go to all the time as a child. Faith’s friends took her out for a manicure/brunch outing in the morning before taking her to the proposal spot. It was a low key and intimate proposal and exactly what Faith requested. After the proposal, a group of their closest friends and family came out of hiding behind the bushes and everyone went to celebrate at the dinner party that was planned.
43 Love Loudoun Weddings 2024 @LoveLoudounWeddings
THE WEDDING
One hundred and twenty guests, including a five-person wedding party, helped the couple celebrate their March wedding. “We chose 48 Fields because we loved how their indoor ceremony space was intentional and separate from the reception space. We planned on having an indoor ceremony because of the time of year we chose for our wedding, and most venues only had the backup option of using the reception area for an indoor ceremony.”
The couple started with a traditional Chinese wedding tea ceremony in the morning and then a Western/Christian ceremony and reception later in the day. “Even though allocating time for the tea ceremony meant cutting out some typical wedding moments, it was so meaningful and an emotional part of the day for both sides of our families. It was an honor to include wedding traditions from our cultures, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.”
“Our wedding was perfect, not because we had the best weather or the most elaborate décor or a professionally choreographed first dance, it was perfect because we got to celebrate our special day with the love and support of all our closest friends and family.”
THE MOMENTS
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
Before you start planning sit down and really think about what’s most important to the both of you for the wedding. After you decide on a few non-negotiables, focus on those things and work everything else around them as you’re planning. The planning process can quickly get overwhelming (and expensive) if you both don’t know what is most important to each of you and try to make every part of the wedding perfect.

THE PROPOSAL
Carina and Sarah first met in college at Longwood University in 2009. They met playing on the club soccer team. Slowly they became very good friends. Somewhere all the way, their friendship grew into a romance. While on a family vacation in Disney World, while they were getting a family photo in front of the castle, Carina asked Sarah to be her “adventure buddy for life”.
THE WEDDING
Carina and Sarah celebrated their love with a gorgeous April wedding at Shadow Creek in Purcellville.
From a beautiful color palette to a rocking fun dance party that lasted all night long, this fun loving couple had such a joy filled wedding.
The couple choose to give each guest at their wedding a small alpaca figurine, signifying adaptability, balance, diligence, and patience as well as representing Carina’s heritage.
“During dinner, we ran outside to take advantage of the most beautiful rainbow and capture some great memories of our day.”
During the wedding process people kept asking Carina and Sarah what their ‘vision’ was for the big day ... “our answer was always, we just want a fun party with everyone we love! And I can say we did achieve our ‘vision’! It was the most beautiful and fun day we’ve ever experienced. All the vendors, our wedding party and all of our guests made the day so special.”

JOHN &
Real Weddings
THE PROPOSAL
John and Bailey met at James Madison University. “We lived across the breezeway from one another and I dared a friend to knock on his door and my friend ding-dongditched him! Poor guy was standing outside looking all confused, so I went over to apologize. My friend (and Maid of Honor) invited him over and after some great conversation, he went back to his apartment only to realize that he was locked out. Even after the whole ordeal, he did ask for my number.”
John and Bailey had dated for about two and a half years through part of undergrad, graduate school, and the pandemic. “If we could do all that together, then we were definitely suited for marriage. It was our first year teaching and it was incredibly stressful because we were both teaching virtually in a onebedroom apartment. For winbreak, John told me we were going to celebrate the first half of
51 Love Loudoun Weddings 2024 @LoveLoudounWeddings
our year in Georgetown. He said I should dress in a way that I would be alright with if I had my picture taken. Very suspicious, I knew before leaving the apartment that he was going to propose – having a fancy night out like this was so unlike us! We drove into Georgetown and walked around somewhat aimlessly for awhile until coming up on the waterfront around sunset. A photographer was there waiting for us and John put us in the prearranged spot for the kneel. I was already crying as I listened to John share a special verse from the Bible and the reasons he wanted to marry me. The moment was captured by the photographer and the best part was just the two of us knowing for a few hours before telling friends and family.”
THE WEDDING
Eighty-five guests, along with a four-person wedding party, helped the couple celebrate their Summer wedding. “Being we are outdoorsy people, we chose our venue because we love the scenery and having indoor and outdoors spaces was a huge bonus.”
“We kept our ceremony short and we lit the Budd family candle. All the couples in the past 100 or so years lit the same candle so it felt very special” After walking down the aisle as a married couple the guests threw purple and gold streamers, which is a JMU football tradition after each touchdown. “We got so caught up in all the streamers that it was even a little difficult to walk through completely. It was such a blast and so memorable.”
The reception spilled out into the grass area where the couple had custom corn hole boards and yard games. “It felt almost like a backyard party! The relaxed feel was perfect for us.”

The bride shared some advice to other couples who are planning their wedding ... “Get a good team and let them do the rest.”

ENGAGEMENTS
There’s nothing so romantic as a proposal in a vineyard. Known as DC’s Wine Country® and celebrating the 40th anniversary of its wine industry in 2024, Loudoun has more than 50 wineries and tasting rooms in a stunning range of settings from Blue Ridge Mountain slopes to vine-crossed river valleys and historic farms – all perfect places to pop the question.
On top of superb vintages and tastings, romantic winery experiences include classes with experts, picnics in the vines, live concerts, food pairings with guest chefs and overnight stays either on property or in nearby towns and villages. We’ll toast to that.
BACHELOR, BACHELORETTE & BRIDAL SHOWERS
Create the perfect experience with friends and family on one of our craft beverage trails. Beer lovers can tackle the LoCo Ale Trail, coffee enthusiasts can stroll through Leesburg’s Coffee Corridor and wine aficionados can stop at some of Loudoun’s 50 vineyards.
Love them all? Visit places like Hillsborough Vineyards & Brewery or Quattro Goombas, which offer both wine and beer, or Mocatinas in Leesburg for everything from lattes to sorbetto e vino-sorbet combined with Stone Tower’s wine.
There’s also plenty of adrenaline action for friends coming to town. Open day and night, TopGolf in Ashburn is the driving range craze –with drinks and dance music. Nearby, iFly is for people who want to fly without going to astronaut school. Channel your medieval warrior at axe-throwing bar Elysium in Purcellville then pop downstairs for in credible smoked ribs, brisket and whiskey at BBQ temple Monk’s. If it’s summer, try ziplining at Harpers Ferry Adventure Center. Or relax and pamper yourself at one of our superb spas or chic restaurants. Lansdowne Resort offers innovative wellness-focused therapies and a sumptuous salon. For people with a sweet tooth, The Conche at the Village at Leesburg is a chocolate-themed

restaurant and cocktail bar with outdoor seating. Don’t miss the (literally) smoking Soot & Rye cocktail and remember to take a box of artisanal handcrafted chocolates home. If it’s history, ambiance and fine dining you want, enjoy the four-course tasting menu at the historic Red Fox Inn & Tavern in Middleburg – Jackie O’s former playground.
REHEARSAL DINNERS
Restaurants for those all-important, pre-wedding dinners run the gamut from fine dining to low key. Lightfoot in downtown Leesburg is a classic replete with chandeliers, piano, spiral staircase and an innovative New American menu. DC Prime Steaks & Lobsters in Ashburn is an upscale steakhouse with fine wines, but if you prefer something more local with a great atmosphere, Tuscarora Mill in Leesburg and its Purcellville sister Magnolias are beloved gems with burger-meets-bistro menus and ample outdoor seating in summer. For a more lively scene, Vanish Farmwoods Brewery near Lucketts has great on-site BBQ and craft beer.
WEDDING & THANK-YOU GIFTS
Forget the big box stores – Loudoun is perfect for quirky local gifts and accessories. You can purchase wines, beer, whiskey, bread, cheese, jams and handcrafted goods from a myriad of wineries, breweries, farm stores and farmers markets, all part of the #Take LoudounHome initiative to inspire and promote local artists and artisans. Our historic downtowns meanwhile are retail destinations too, with a slate of chic stores and trendy boutiques selling fashionable home décor and upscale urban gifts and accessories. Don’t miss Middleburg’s Washington Street and Leesburg’s King Street, the county’s two leading independent retail thoroughfares.
