Gentle Giants Older adult volunteers a good fit for horse rescue By Mary Grace Keller News-Post Staff

ally Lechner didn’t grow up around horses, but when her sister came to visit from Colorado, they decided to go horseback riding together. They tried and failed to find a stable while her sister was in town. Lechner said farewell, but sent her sister home with a pamphlet on Maryland horseback riding. Her sister later spotted a name, Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue, in Mt. Airy. It’s about 60 miles from where Lechner lives in the Annapolis area, but she decided to check it out. The rolling hills of green dotted with horses is where she fell in love with the rescue. “I love it here. Everything about this place is wonderful,” she said. “In freezing cold, it’s magic. In the sweat of summer, it is magic. The horses are so majestic, they’re so beautiful.” Lechner is retired from 30 years of teaching special education and usually makes the trek to Mt. Airy three times a week to spend her time giving back to animals. As Lechner described her experience, a white Andalusian named Bellisima stretched her neck out from a stall, seemingly looking for attention. Lechner reached over and gave her a scratch. White hairs flew from her coat and stuck to Lechner’s shirt. She’s been volunteering for a little over a year now for the nonprofit that focuses on rescuing some of the biggest—and often the gentlest—of horse breeds. Founder and Executive Director Christine Hajek likes to say draft horses are the biggest and best of horses, but there’s a greater reason why their organization focuses on this breed. “While draft horses are a very small minority of the population percentage wise, they’re grossly overrepresented in the number of horses who are being sent to slaughter,” Hajek said. “It’s because they’re cheap, they’re huge and they’re meaty.” 4

As of early May, the rescue had about 120 equine between their roughly 400 acres in Mt. Airy and Woodbine. Their rescues largely come from auctions, Hajek said, where horses can be sold to people who don’t have their best interests at heart. Some horses come from animal control and others are surrendered by owners who hope the rescue can give them the best chance at life, according to Hajek. One of those owner-surrendered horses is a bay-colored horse named Harlem. This Belgian Percheron cross, standing about 17 hands tall, was

once a New York City carriage horse. Hajek said his owner offered him to Gentle Giants because he was diagnosed with a serious hoof disease called canker. It’s at times tricky to treat and can be fatal, according to Hajek. Gentle Giants has become known in the horse community for successfully treating canker, Hajek said, and they were able to save Harlem. He’s been in remission for about a year and a half. But Harlem is doing more than surviving. In fact, he’s probably one of the better-known horses at the rescue. He serves as an ambassador for Gentle Gi-

ants and goes out into the community for events. Not every horse’s personality is suited for the ambassador life, Hajek noted, but Harlem is used to being around people and cameras from his time in the big city. “They either have the desire to do it or they don’t,” Hajek said of the horses. Ambassador horses go to places such as nursing homes, club meetings and parades. When they attend events, it helps raise awareness about the rescue and build relationships with the community. “You can just see people soften and relax,” said Adria Strausbaugh, community outreach director. It’s almost spiritual. “Anytime that we get a chance that we can take a few horses out to show that, it’s really special.” At nursing homes, Hajek’s been surprised to learn how many residents are former riders.

“A couple of the residents who were bedridden even asked their nurses to … roll their whole entire bed outside so they could see the horses,” Hajek said of a recent visit. Gentle Giants relies on donations and volunteers to keep going. About 38% of its 160-plus volunteers are 50 or older, according to Strausbaugh. “After you’re done with your career, people still want something to do,” she said. “They still want a purpose and to be able to use their time and have it be valuable, and this is a great way to do that.” When the pandemic struck and they couldn’t have volunteers, Hajek said the workload was tough on their staff of about 26. Some volunteers, like Lechner, come frequently, and others come once in a while, depending on their availability.

Hajek wants potential volunteers to know they don’t need to be young and fit to donate their time. “I think sometimes older volunteers fail to realize that … not only do we have volunteer opportunities for them, but that we’re really an amazing fit,” Hajek said. “We do have some young whippersnappers, but not many.” She said they’ll work with the volunteer to find tasks that align with their abilities. “You’re only asked to do what you’re ready to do,” Lechner said. How SOAR helps meet needs of seniors with limited income By Ryan Marshall News-Post Staff

s with many organizations, the COVID-19 pandemic has stretched Leslie Schultz’s group SOAR in many directions, even as it has expanded its opportunities to help the community. SOAR, or Supporting Older Adults Through Resources, helps Frederick County seniors with various needs, from guiding them through finding housing to helping with utility payments to installing a stairlift. “Probably our most hidden people in our society today are our seniors,” said Schultz, SOAR’s president. Early in the pandemic, it became clear to her that transportation and food had become vital issues for her clients, with many seniors at higher risk of complications from COVID reluctant to leave their homes. So, she worked with The Rotary Club of Frederick to set up the Food and More program, in which Rotary volunteers deliver groceries and other items to 38 seniors in the county. “That has been transformational for our seniors,” Schultz said. Along with providing clients with a steady supply of food, Food and More provides another benefit, Schultz said. Volunteers who deliver the groceries can get a set of eyes on their client to help identify other problems that they might face. For Rotary member Kate Cusato, her regular deliveries to one woman have allowed her to work with SOAR to get the woman a shower chair for her home, get her help with her medical 6

bills, and set up an appointment for the woman to get a COVID-19 vaccination. But she also helps with more mundane things, too. For example, if the woman has gotten a call from a tele|

marketer, Cusato said she tries to help her determine if it was legitimate or a scam. “It’s not just groceries. It’s the relationship,” Cusato said.

For The Rotary Club of Frederick’s President Joanne McCoy, the “and More” part of the program may be at least as important as the food. Many aren’t going to tell a stranger about

their problems. “It’s much easier to confide in a friend,” she said. At the beginning of the pandemic, the Rotary planned to just help stock a food bank or make a similar modest contribution. But it got about 50 volunteers, people anxious to do something outside of themselves in the midst of the pandemic. “That’s one of the ways we cope, I guess, with instability,” McCoy said. But it quickly became clear what was needed, and after some time to work out the kinks, Rotary volunteers became what McCoy called “SOAR’s eyes and ears” with the seniors with whom they interacted. When they identify a problem, volunteers can notify Schultz and let SOAR step in to try to help. SOAR doesn’t limit what it will do, Schultz said. It has helped seniors find vehicles when theirs broke down, helped with rehousing, paid for medications. Schultz founded the organization in 2015 to help those 65 or older with

limited incomes in Frederick County. Schultz herself had more than 20 years of experience working with seniors in the county. She was very close to her grandmother growing up, who took her along to nursing homes or to visit those shut in their homes. Although her grandmother worked into her 80s, saved and was careful with her money, Schultz watched her die penniless in a nursing home, an illustration of the economic hardships that many seniors face on fixed incomes. Along with planning to expand the food program, SOAR is looking for office space with more storage area to keep equipment that it can refurbish and provide to seniors, as well as to provide walk-in case management services for clients. “They need an advocate and a friend,” Rotary’s McCoy said. “And that’s what SOAR does.” For more information about SOAR and to request assistance, visit soarfrederick.org or call 240-575-9665.

Why You Need an Advance Directive

ne of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones is to let them know what your health care wishes are in the event you are unable to speak for yourself. Although it may be frightening and uncomfortable to think about this, if you have the right tools, advance care planning can be much easier. An event or emergency might happen at any time that may require someone else to speak for you and provide direction about your health care. Unfortunately, an advance directive is often thought of as a document designed exclusively for older people. “We all hope to communicate until the very end of our lives, but it doesn’t always happen that way,” said Michelle Ross, a social worker with Frederick Health. “An advance directive helps ensure that your wishes for your medical care are followed, even if you cannot speak for yourself. Creating these documents relieves your loved ones from having to guess what medical treatment you would have wanted, leaving less room for disagreements and the type of turmoil that can have a devastating effect on a family for a very long time.” An advance directive is a two-part document. The first part identifies a health care agent whom you designate to help speak on your behalf.This agent could be a spouse, adult child or other family member, or a trusted friend or a professional who helps with health care matters. The second part, known as a living will, contains specific directions for your agent and health care team care in certain situations.You can provide information in your living will that will explain what treatments you want to receive or refuse and under what conditions. may or may not be the person you would have chosen for yourself.” Too often, when loved ones are left guessing what should be done, the result can be guilt, uncertainty and even arguments. What is an ABLE Account? A chieving a Better Life Experience Act, ABLE, accounts help people with disabilities and their families save and pay for disability-related expenses. They allow states to create tax-advantaged savings programs for eligible people with disabilities, and distributions are tax free if they are used for qualified disability expenses. Regulations issued on Oct. 1, 2020, allow eligible individuals to put more money into ABLE accounts and roll money from qualified tuition programs — 529 plans — into ABLE accounts. Certain contributions made to ABLE accounts by low- and moderate-income workers now may qualify for the Saver’s Credit — a tax credit for eligible contributions to an ABLE account. Though contributions aren’t deductible, distributions, including earnings, are tax-free to the designated beneficiary if they are used to pay such qualified disability expenses as: • Housing • Education • Transportation • Health • Employment training and support • Assistive technology • Personal support services The Achieving a Better Life Experience Act (ABLE) became law in 2014 and has been updated since then. The tax legislation in 2017: • Increased the amount of contributions allowed to an ABLE account and added special rules for the increased contribution limit • Allowed an ABLE account designated beneficiary to claim a Saver’s Credit for contributions to the account • Allowed rollovers in limited amounts from a 529 qualified tuition program account of the designated beneficiary 10
