A coach’s BEST nightmare Deep talent pool leaves FHS volleyball with good problem to have By Matt Ward

J

ason Roemer, head coach of the Fredericksburg High School varsity volleyball team, has a big problem, but it’s one of those puzzles he’s hasn’t quite figure out yet. There’s too much talent in the Battlin’ Billies lineup this season. “What is everyone’s role going to be? That’s what I lose sleep over right now,” Roemer said. “Who’s going to play where? Can they accept their role? What’s the team chemistry? I’m tired of thinking about it. I’m ready to get in the gym and do it because we have a really good team this year.” Four key players on last year’s playoff team graduated, but the Billies will be boosted by seven seniors on this year’s squad — all seeking their first district championship. “I’m still hungry for a district championship. These kids are hungry for a district championship,” Roemer said. “We had a JV team that won the district championship and lost just one game in district, so there’s a lot of skill kids moving up.” With the expectation of a large varsity roster, nearly half the spots are up for grabs behind the seven seniors. “Usually, when we get to the end of school (in May) we have a good idea (of a potential varsity roster), but because of incoming freshmen that can play at a high level and a move-in sophomore, there’s some questions,” Roemer said. “All of our

kids have had a very busy summer. We had 10 of them go to the Texas A&M team camp. They’ve all been camping, working out and they’re ready to go.” Setter Despite losing last year’s starter Monica Montgomery, Fredericksburg will returned experienced setter Kendyl Stevens, who saw significant playing time early in 2013 and started while Montgomery recovered from a concussion during non-district play. “We’re going to be balanced this year (offensively),” Roemer said. “We have a lot of dynamic hitters; we’re going to be really strong at the middle blocker position, so there are certain sets that we’re going to have to set consistently.” Joining Stevens in contention for setter time on the court is a pair of incoming juniors who help make up a formidable trio of options for the FHS head coach. “Katherine McManigle and Chase Whiting both set on the JV last year and they set differently than Kendyl,” Roemer said. “It’s height different; it’s the tempo of the ball coming out of the hands. It’s like two different quarterbacks running the offense in football.” Middle blocker Junior Adrianna Hartmann, last year’s Newcomer of the Year in District 27-3A, returns to lead the Fredericksburg front row at the middle blocker position, though the Billies will sorely miss all-state middle blocker Allie Doucet, who graduated after last season. “By the time district rolled around (last season), Adrianna was playing really well and she has only gotten better,” Roemer

said. “She may be one of the best 4A middle blockers in the state of Texas.” Four other players will look to join Hartmann on the front line for two starting spots (middle blocker and right side hitter), including former JV players Anna Koenig and Emily Shepherd, 6’3 incoming freshman Aubrey Sultemeier and 6’2 sophomore Abby Spurgeon, a transfer from Llano. “We’re going to be tall and put up a big block,” Roemer said. “We might have one of the tallest 4A teams in the state this season.”

offseason, playing at a really high level.” Ashley Penick also returns as a starter on the back row after splitting time between the front and back rows last season. “I think we found a niche last year and through the spring as a defensive specialist for her,” Roemer said. After finishing the season as the JV libero in district play, incoming sophomore Kenzie Stevens will compete for the third back row spot along with junior Madison Trousdale and sophomore Brooke Nevins. District outlook University Interscholastic League realignment forced significant changes on teams

Outside hitter Four seniors will contend and rotate through the two available outside hitter spots in Roemer’s starting lineup as Kiersten Kott, Taylor Kitchens, McKenna Mohr and Ann Blackmon all return from last year’s squad. All four seniors will work to fend off competition from incoming juniors Eliza Goldsberry and Shepherd as well as sophomore Jessie Jarreau, Roemer said. “There are a lot of names up here,” he said. “We could have a large (varsity) team as far as size and numbers this season.” Back row Fredericksburg’s defense will be anchored by senior libero Payton Robertson, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year who returns for her fourth season on varsity. “One of these days, she’ll have to graduate, but we get one more season with her, which is great. She’s a former all-state player who should be all-state again this year,” Roemer said. “She’s had a club season and

across the state — new classifications, divisions and districts — but the biggest difference for Fredericksburg in their move to District 29-4A is who won’t be on their schedule: Wimberley. Fredericksburg jumped to the bottom half of Region IV while their long-time rivals stayed in the top half, meaning the Billies can only meet the Texans in non-district play or at the regional tournament. “Realignment was very kind to us,” Roemer said. “No disrespect to our district opponents because we’re going to have our work cut out for us.” Joining the Billies in District 29-4A will be familiar foes in Bandera and Boerne, along with new rivals in Devine, Hondo and Lytle. “It’ll be challenging,” Roemer said. “If we stay healthy and have good team chemistry, this may be on paper, skillwise, the best Fredericksburg team I’ve had here.”

Senior leaders bring winner’s mentality Billie football looks toward bright future in 2014 campaign By Matt Ward

L

osing isn’t a word the 26 seniors on this year’s Fredericksburg High School varsity football team deal with often. Pee-wee Super Bowl appearances with the Fredericksburg RAMS, two undefeated seasons at Fredericksburg Middle School, strong seasons and a district championship as underclassmen at FHS, these Billie seniors win. A lot. With a bitter taste in their mouth after losing in the rain at the second round in 2013, the seniors want to make a statement about Fredericksburg football in their final go-round. “We’re here to win it,” Kyle Grona, senior quarterback and a three-year starter, said.

We really need to maintain what we’ve done and improve on last year. We lost some seniors (from last year), but we’ve got some good guys coming up. We need to take what we’ve got and make it even better.”

The attitude of this year’s squad is different, Grona said, with the goal being a Class 4A state championship. “(The players’ focus is) on the field, off the field, weight room and especially in the classroom,” he said. “Our theme is unfinished business. We should have gone a lot further than we did (last season) and now we’re going to do it.” Winning in their blood The expectation of winning and the confidence that comes from that is what helped the Billies pull off a last-second come-frombehind win over Navarro last season. “For this group of seniors, winning is what they do. They find a way to win,” head coach Lance Moffett said. “Our confidence as a staff in this group couldn’t be higher.” What makes this year’s senior class special, the head coach noted, was the emotional connection that has developed over the past three high school seasons. “They have a genuine love and respect for each other,” Moffett said. “They’re not all the same. They don’t run all together on weekends. They’re in different high school ‘cliques,’ but they’re all united in their love for each other and for football.” “If I put them in the all-pur-

FHS cross country aims to go the distance in 2014 By Austin R. Eck

F

redericksburg High School cross country team is looking to build off of the experience it gained last year. The cross country team lost only three runners to graduation the past year. “Overall, the expectations are high,” head coach Dan Aldrich said. “Being experienced we’re going to go in confident knowing how to run as a group.” Adding to the team’s experience is Clarissa Sanchez and Juan Hernandez. Both runners competed at the state meet last year, which gave them experience no one else on the team has. “Experienced runners will always outrun those who are in shape,” Aldrich said. “When you get to the state meet, it’s not just about being in shape. It’s about learning how to run the course.” The Billies will compete in a new district this year that features strong running programs. Fredericksburg will compete against Bandera, Juan Hernandez, left, ran his way to the Class 3A state competition last year. Head coach Dan Aldrich hopes Hernandez will return with his teammates in tow this year. — Standard-Radio Post file photo

Kammlah is sponsored by Bow Pros Archery and Outdoors in Fredericksburg, and a benefit is being planned to help with the costs associated with the upcoming national championships.

Bit and Bridle’s play day was held Sunday, July 20 at the Snaffle Bit Ranch. Participants ranged in age from six years to 60. Winners included Yvonne Salazar, first place; Serena Walston, second, and Amy Bray, third. After tryouts on Thursday and Friday, the team roster will be announced, and runners will be expected to be at practice on Monday morning. The Battlin’ Billies scheduled their first meet for Sept. 4 at Llano High School as a way to determine how they stack up against the competition. “It tells us where we are at,” Aldrich said. “Are we ready to actually start competing?” The Battlin’ Billies will run again at the Harper Invitational on Sept. 13, but the first benchmark for the team is the Six Flags Fiesta Texas Ricardo Romo Cross Country Classic on Sept. 20 at University of Texas at San Antonio. Fredericksburg will compete at the District 29-4A meet on Oct. 22 at Bandera City Park. If the team or any runners qualify for the regional meet, the next meet will be Nov. 1 at UTSA. If after the regional tournament in San Antonio, any qualifying Battlin’ Billies will compete at the State 4A tournament on Nov. 8 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Boerne, Devine, Lytle and Hondo. The new district alignment puts more pressure on the Billies to perform at the district competition to advance to the regional meet. Last year, five out of the six girls’ cross country teams advanced to their respective regional meet. Four of the five finished top 10 at the meet. For the boys’ teams, five out six teams advanced to the regional meet and all of the five teams placed in the top 10. Under the current format, only three teams from each district will advance to the next meet. “We’re not running for regionals anymore. We’re running for district,” he said. “We could go into district in the best shape of our lives, running better than last year and not qualify for regionals.” To prepare for this season, Aldrich adjusted the schedule by pushing the first meet back a week. “I’m hoping this is the breakout year where we can get both teams to state,” he said. Athlete tryouts will be from 9:45 a.m. to noon, Aug. 7-8, at the FHS weight room. Athletes are encouraged to bring their own water bottle, wrist watch, a pair of lightweight running shoes in good condition and clothing acceptable for running. Pride of the Texas Hill Country takes the ‘field’ Fredericksburg High School band steps off summer practices this week

Fredericksburg High School Band members watch as director Jason Younts gives a demonstration on the correct way to move their feet. The band attended their annual Band Camp last week and then began practices Monday, Aug. 4, and will continue throughout the month. This year’s show is entitled “Awakening.”

Working on their foot movement, (from left) Jonas Wikander, Zane Brown, Abel Jaimes, Nathan Weatherford, Victoria Richter, Thea Garcia and Joe Tucker try to stay in line.

The music is inspired by Percy Grainger, Aaron Copeland and Carol Chambers. The drum majors for the school year are Arabella Garcia, Drew Bonillas and Head Drum Major Hannah Cheeseman. Field conductor and trumpet soloist is Danielle Ortiz. — StandardRadio Post/Autumn Bernhard

Mackenzie Grumbles, along with the rest of the color guard, works on staying in step while twirling their flags. All of the members of this year’s color guard are new to the squad.

Dylan Barnes makes sure to stay at attention when doing practice drills. The band directors are John Rauschuber, Jason Younts, James Buxton, Brad Bryant, Dani Rauschuber and Brandi Wooten.

After walking up and down the band practice field on their tip toes, Kyle Paulin and Kathleen Ridley stretch out to avoid cramping. The band is focusing on the small details in hopes of advance to the State University Interscholastic League Marching Contest this season. Director Dani Rauschuber said, “We are going for the gold.” The band goes to state every other year and last time received the silver medal.

2014 ‘Schuetzenkoenige’ crowned • Crenwelge, Grimes top field of 106 in double shoot-offs

donated by the Atlee Lochte Family. The following are complete results: • 119th Annual Bundes Schuetzenfest Aug. 2-3, 2014 at Tivydale range *denotes .22 rimfire division shooter

• Stehling, Feller earn induction into shooters’ Hall of Fame By Lisa Treiber-Walter Double shoot-offs were needed to decide this year’s Schuetzenfest royalty and, when the final shots rang out, Dennis Crenwelge and Fred Grimes were kings. Crenwelge was crowned centerfire “Schuetzen-koenig” after turning in a score of 96 in the shoot-off to oust contender John Klaerner, who trailed two points behind with a 94. The pair had led the field of 106 shooters at the conclusion of the regular contest with a tying score of 98 to force the showdown. In the .22 rimfire contest, Grimes and Daniel Marquardt turned in twin scores of 89 to force their postshoot duel. Grimes then claimed the rimfire crown by punch an 84 in his target, while Marquardt’s efforts yielded an 80. Under the coordination of the Gillespie County Schuetzenbund, the annual countywide competition for six local shooting clubs was hosted by the Tivydale Shooting Club at its Texas Hills Sporting Range, on FM 2093 (Tivydale Road.) The centerfire king’s trophy was donated by Stroeher and Son/Stroeher and Olfers, while the revolving trophy was donated by Fritztown Diesel. The rimfire king’s trophy was donated by Security State Bank and Trust, while the revolving trophy was made possible by Moellering Construction. Grapetown Shooting Club won the day in both centerfire and rimfire team competitions. To win the centerfire contest for a second consecutive year, shooters Eddie Behrends, John Klaerner, Charlie Whiten, Darryl Smith, Andy Jacoby, Jamie Worrell and Howard Worrell combined for the winning score of 557. Second-place was claimed by the Hubertus Shooting Club, whose members shot a score just six points behind the leader at 551. Other clubs finished in the following order: Bear Creek, 544; Tivydale, 537; Scharfschuetzen, 536, and Baron’s Creek, 525. The centerfire team revolving trophy was donated and presented by Edward Stroeher. To claim the rimfire team trophy, Grapetown’s shooters combined for a winning score of 251. Contributing were Ricky Ottmers, Sandra Jacoby, Marianna Behrends and Gerald Beckmann. Running a close second, just two points behind, was the Hubertus Shooting Club, who had a total score of 249. Other teams finished in the following order: Bear Creek, 240; Tivydale, 230, and Baron’s Creek, 215. (Scharfschuetzen did not enter the rimfire division.) The Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post donated the rimfire division’s revolving team trophy. Donating the medals for the two kings as well as the top teams was Arrowhead Bank. Patches for the top 10 centerfire and top five rimfire shooters were donated by Worrell Enterprises. Performing “Er Lebe Hoch”

Marianna Behrends takes aim on her target as one of several female shooters competing in this past weekend’s Schuetzenfest countywide shooting festival hosted by the Tivydale Shooting Club at its Texas (“May He Live High”) while teammates hoisted their kings into the air was the Schuetzenfest Band, comprised of Bill Smallwood, Andrew Nielsen, Vernell Ahrens and Mark Luedecke. In keeping with tradition, the Schuetzenbund Hall of Fame installed into its ranks two shooters — one living and one posthumously. Chosen for the living Hall of Fame distinction for 2014 was Fred Stehling, a multiple crown winner and nominee of the host Tivydale Shooting Club. He was presented the award donated by the Charles Feller Family. Other nominees this year included Thomas Gant and Lawrence Stehling, both also

from the Tivydale group. The host club is given the distinction of nominating Hall of Fame candidates and the entire Bund membership votes on the final selection. Honored posthumously was the late Delton Feller, who was a member of the Tivydale Shooting Club. The award, accepted by his widow, Linda Feller, was donated by the Worrell Family. Also honored at the ceremony concluding two days of shooting competition were the oldest shooter, the youngest shooter and the top female shooter in attendance. The oldest shooter recognized Sunday evening was

F.C. Lochte, whose centerfire score of 86 surpassed his age of 84. The youngest shooter taking the firing line over the weekend was nine-yearold Ethan Marschall, who turned in a rimfire score of 42. Both Lochte and Marschall were presented plaques by Leland Geistweidt, on behalf of the donor, American Bank of Texas. Honored as the highestscoring individual female in the event was Joan Ransleben, who shot a 92 in the centerfire division. Her performance ranked her in the 18th position out of a field of 106. She was presented a bluebonnet-adorned plaque,

Billies look for depth to return to state By Lisa Treiber-Walter

D

epth. That’s what the Fredericksburg High School (FHS) varsity tennis players are going to need to strive for above all else if they want to win in the fall season ahead. “For us, it’s the depth of our ladder,” said Randall King, head FHS tennis coach who led his Billie netters to a 25-7 record last year, complete with a second-place finish in state Class 3A team tennis play. A large chunk of that winning team graduated and moved on, “but we have a strong foundation returning,” King said. Slated to come back to the courts are eight returning lettermen, including three boys and five girls, who also happen to be seven juniors and one sophomore. “Our season will depend, really, on how the lower part of our ladder performs,” he said. “We will have players with no varsity experience filling out our sixth, seventh and eighth spots on the ladder. If they work hard and improve through August and September, we have the potential to return to the state tournament.” All signs are looking up. Most of the players have been on the court over the summer playing in recreational, yet competitive tournaments, taking lessons and attending rigorous camps to keep up their conditioning and to hone their skills. “As a team, we will need to grow

early and bond. We have a great group of kids that can accomplish plenty this fall,” King said. So far, rankings of Texas’ top tennis teams have not been released. When they are, though, “I think we will find ourselves in the Top 5 for pre-season rankings,” King said. Always strong powerhouse Abilene Wylie will again be the team to beat, he said. Vernon will be strong, as well, he added. Other past tough contenders for the Billies, including College Station High and Frisco Lone Star, have moved upward into the Class 5A field. “Within our district, Boerne and Hondo will be the teams to watch out for this fall,” King said, adding that the top two teams will advance straight to the fall team tennis regional level. Only the regional champ then will advance to a four-team state tournament, likely to be held in College Station, King said. This year’s schedule kicks off early with some “great competition” in an initial match against San Antonio O’Connor on Aug. 20 — a half a week before classes even resume. The Billies then will turn right around and co-host the Fredericksburg/Kerrville Tournament on Aug. 21-22. “It’ll include some of the best teams from around the state in 4A, 5A and 6A,” King said. The Billies have drawn San Marcos in the first round of that tourney.

Prior to the start of its official schedule, though, varsity players are due on the courts for a first day of practice this coming Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 7-9 a.m. After the first practice, team uniforms will be issued and the team picture will be taken immediately, finishing up around 10 a.m., King said. All prospective players need to attend this practice and all others, he said. As the University Interscholastic League has eliminated a “true” two-a-day format, the squad will act on the following workout schedule until the start of school: On Wednesday, Aug. 13: boy netters will work out from 6:30-8 a.m. and from 4-5:30 p.m., while the girls will practice from 8-9:30 a.m. and again from 5:30-7 p.m. On Thursday, Aug. 14: girls will practice from 6:30-8 a.m., while boys will practice 8-9:30 a.m. Then, on Friday, Aug. 15, the varsity players only will have a 7-9 a.m. practice. The following week, all girls will practice from 4-5:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, while boys will take the second workout shift from 5:30-7 p.m. Varsity players only will practice 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, prior to the startup of their fall rotation against San Antonio O’Connor at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, on FHS’ home courts. (For a complete schedule, see a master schedule page elsewhere in this special section.)

Fredericksburg High School student Hannah Boubel, who last spring won the state girls’ singles title, will be one of eight returning lettermen to the Billies’ varsity squad. This team will need to balance its experience with new team members “stepping it up” if they have hopes of repeating a state team tennis tournament appearance. — StandardRadio Post/Lisa Treiber-Walter

The Panthers, who went on to sweep Sealy Saturday in the regional finals to secure a state berth, are the third team to advance to state after besting FHS along with Bellville (state finalist, 2013) and La Grange (state finalist, 2012). “(We were) so close. 2010, the Billies pushed ninthranked Liberty Hill to the limit before falling 25-27, 25-21, 12-25, 25-20, 8-15 at the Blossom Athletic Center in San Antonio. Fredericksburg held an early 16-11 lead midway through set one before FHS errors and an improved Panther attack pushed Liberty Hill back into the set. “We started really strong and we were the aggressor,” Roemer said. “It was really good volleyball on both sides of the net. We really did not give the set away. Liberty Hill won it with really good digs and kills.” Fredericksburg pushed the Panthers to set point twice in the first, but could not get the final point as a FHS attack at 25-25 gave Liberty Hill a chance to end the set, which they did with a final kill. Friday, Feb. 6 Tuesday, Feb. 10 * District contest

JV girls fall to Tivy 38-18 Tuesday After playing scrimmage games, the Fredericksburg High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team opened their season on Tuesday night in the FHS Gym. Hosting Kerrville, the Billies came up short, 38-18. “We will work hard and improve before the next contest, which is in Dripping Springs,” Coach Kristy Danz said. The Billies will play in Dripping Springs at 5:30 p.m. on Friday before competing in the New Braunfels Tournament on Saturday. Then, on Monday, Nov. 24, the JV team

will be back on the road to play New Braunfels Canyon in a 5:30 p.m. game. “We played decently for three quarters and when the fourth quarter arrived, we ran out of energy and our defense became non-existent,” Danz said. “We gave up too many lay-ups and easy baskets.” She said, “This game was an important learning experience because now the girls realize how important the conditioning we do in practice is to the game of basketball.” Scoring: Landry Moffett 6, Daisha Pfiester 4, Rachel Rothermel 3, Hannah Wilson 3, Kathryn Rodriguez 2.

In their district, the Billies are the preseason underdogs. Boerne, Hondo and Devine are all ranked in the top 15 of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll for Class 4A, and all three schools advanced to the regional tournament last year. “I like our chances,” Grona said. “I like being the underdog, and the fact that they are overlooking us right now.” Before the Billies can reach district play, they must make their way through a challenging non-district schedule. Of the nine non-district games scheduled, six of the Billies opponents are ranked in the top 20 of their respective classes. “We will be going into a dogfight every night on the court,” she said. FHS has the depth this year to stay competitive through every minute of its dogfights. “I will have 10-13 players on the team that are practically interchangeable,” Grona said. “Our game will not slow down when our subs enter the game.” Grona also is excited about how the team has come together as a unit. “This team truly cares about each other and it shows in the way they play. They all have each other’s back,” she said.

“This is the best defensive team we have had since I have been here,” she said. Fredericksburg is the beneficiary of two transfers from other schools that will play on the varsity team this year. The 6-foot-plus Abby Spurgin will give the Billies a decisive edge. “Not only is she tall, but probably one of the strongest players on the team,” Grona said. “There is not a player in the district that can guard her if she plays as big and strong as she can be.” Spurgin was a member of the volleyball team this year, but after she finds her basketball groove in the first portion of the season, Grona hopes she will become a “go-to player on the inside.” Also new to the Billies via transfer from Lubbock is freshman Ashley Wipff. She earned her spot on the varsity roster for her court vision and development as an outside shooter. “Ashley is just a natural basketball player with great court awareness and is starting to become a confident outside shooter,” Grona said. “My favorite thing about Ashley is how well she sees the floor and takes care of the basketball on every possession.”

In their first game of the 2014-15 season, the Fredericksburg High School varsity girls’ basketball team fell to Kerrville Tivy 56-48. After the first quarter, the Billies trailed by one point, but FHS was outscored by 10 points in the second quarter to end the first half 34-23. The Billies’ defense made in impact in the first quarter, which is something coach Carrie Grona is looking to build on throughout the season. “We are tenacious on defense. The first quarter showed that,” Grona said. “Now, we have to get 10 girls to go 32 minutes with that kind of defense.” The defense was led by Mariah Espinoza and Madison Trousdale. Espinoza forced two turnovers, and Trousdale ended the night with three steals. Fredericksburg’s lull continued through the third quarter, but in the fourth quarter the Billies managed to string together baskets and outscore the Antlers 20-10 in the fourth quarter. “I was very proud of how we fought back tonight,” Grona said. “It shows huge promise for the season.” Helping the Billies with scoring was freshmen Ashley Wipff from long range. All of Wipff’s nine points came from three three-point shots on five attempts. Emily Shepherd also found her stride from the three-

point distance converting her two attempts. Trousdale and Abby Sprugin helped keep the Antlers offbalanced. Trousdale scored 12 of her 16 points from inside the paint. Spurgin also scored a majority of her points from the key. “By district these two girls will be a huge threat from the outside,” Grona said. With three players transitioning from volleyball to basketball this week, Grona could not utilize a full rotation on

Tuesday night. “We had to depend on six girls tonight,” Grona said. Fredericksburg struggled all night from the free throw line by only making seven on 20 attempts. Also, working against the Billies were 25 turnovers. “We need to cut down on turnovers and make our free throws if we want to push through tough games,” Grona said. Tivy FHS

FHS boys open season with road victories The Fredericksburg High School varsity boys’ basketball team opened their season Tuesday evening with an easy 75-28 road win over Jourdanton. Both the JV (70-18) and the freshmen (52-23) also notched victories over the Indians. FHS will host Canyon Lake Saturday, due to the Hawks’ area-round football playoff game Friday. The Billie freshmen will open play at 10 a.m., followed by the JV at 11:15 a.m. and the varsity at 12:30 p.m. The Billies will then travel to Marble Falls (5:15, 6:30, 7:45 p.m.) Monday before hosting Medina Valley Tuesday (5:30, 5:30, 7 p.m.). Head coach Tim Kaman said the Fredericksburg varsity had a “good start to the season.” “We did a nice job setting the tone with solid defense, which enabled us to get some easy buckets,” Kaman said. “Blake Tatsch shot the three-pointer well, hitting four from beyond the arc.”

I have to attribute that to the moment and importance of the game.” Senior setter Kendyl Stevens recorded 45 assists in the match, while senior libero Payton Robertson led the Billie defense with 35 digs. “We had our chances and the ball would not bounce the way we needed it to bounce tonight,” Roemer

Harper’s playoff drive derailed by Schulenburg By Danny Hirt Despite the loss to Schulenburg in the UIL 2A Region IV finals Saturday, the Harper Ladyhorns take away a note of winning. “It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done,” said HHS head coach Gina Lumpkins after the match, quoting the artist Vincent Van Gogh. “This is the quote behind our theme, ‘Love wins,’” said the coach. “This idea has carried us through the ups and downs of our season since Aug. 4.” The Ladyhorns dropped all three games to Schulenburg in Saturday’s finals — 17-25, 25-27 and 17-25. Senior golfers endure cold in stroke play

Heritage volleyball earns TAPPS honors

Eighteen golfers competed in the Fredericksburg Men’s Super Seniors Golf Association individual “stroke play” event at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course on Tuesday. Bill Armentrout described the course as being “in great shape” and added that the cold weather didn’t seem to bother anyone. Ron Moerbe finished in first place, a single stroke distancing him from secondplace winner Tom Ruelle. Dick Bateman finished two more strokes back in third place. J.W. Brinlee and Joe Arizola were the “Closest to the Hole” winners. The Super Seniors accept any man over 55 years old who is interested in playing competitive golf. For more information, call the golf shop at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Golf Course at 830-997-4010.

The Heritage School volleyball team earned several honors as a result of their recently-concluded successful season. The Lady Eagles advanced to the TAPPS state 1A semifinals — further than any other volleyball team from the school had ever gone before — winning both area and regional championships along the way. In addition, nine team members were recently named to District 3 alldistrict squads, with first team designation going to

Christina Harpold, Lindsey Pressler, Abby Sauer, Jamie Hoermann, and Sydney Richburg. Second team honors were earned by Sarah Andrews, Savannah Morrow and Avery Klepac. Claire Lindner was placed on the honorable mention listing. Also, Harpold was named to the TAPPS first team allstate squad while Pressler was tabbed for second team recognition. Sauer was placed on the honorable mention team.

Freshman girls fall in tight season opener 27-25 to Kerrville

Heritage begins playoff trail Friday night at Seguin Lifegate

Fredericksburg High School freshmen girls’ basketball team opened their season on Tuesday night in the FHS Gym against Kerrville. Playing in their first regular game, the Billies fell to Tivy, 27-25. A busy week is coming up for the freshmen squad when they travel to Dripping Springs on Friday night for a 5:15 p.m. game and then play in the New Braunfels Tournament on Saturday. On Monday, Nov. 24, the team will be back on the road to New Braunfels Canyon for a 5:30 p.m.

The Heritage School Eagles will begin their journey for a sixth TAPPS state Division III six-man football title Friday when they travel to Seguin to take on district rival Lifegate in the second round of the playoffs. Kick-off is planned for 7:30 p.m. Heritage earned a bye in last week’s opening round by virtue of winning the District 3 regular season championship with a perfect 4-0 record. The league’s third seed, Seguin Lifegate, advanced by defeating Brenham Christian 51-6 last weekend. The district’s two other

As the saying goes, Lifegate and the Eagles “have history.” For example, the two schools have found themselves as league opponents for virtually the full time they’ve faced each other on the gridiron. And on a recent sour note, Lifegate defeated Heritage 60-14 for the 2012 state championship. While Heritage was victo-

Seven Heart of Texas (HOT) Swim Team members represented Fredericksburg last weekend at a meet held at the University of Texas. Over 26 teams from central and south Texas and over 945 swimmers participated in the meet. The HOT swimmers were limited to three events per day and most swimmers could only commit for a single day, Coach Al Carr said. “All seven HOT swimmers were challenged to swim events that they needed to improve in order to qualify for the winter season championship series which starts in mid-January,” Carr said. “We need to hone in on the events that they will be swimming at the first championship meet which brings together all the ‘B’ qualifiers to determine which swimmers will advance to the ‘BB’ Championship meet.” More than 10 swimmers should qualify for the first rung of the ladder. “The team is very supportive of those swimmers with the personal work ethic and goal to go to the championship series. This is where each swimmer proves to himself the effects of daily practice and realistic goal setting,” Carr said. “Based on our strong performance thus far this winter, I feel we will finish the season with more than 96 percent improvement and numerous personal goals met or exceeded.” Ella Junker, 13, swam a 200 backstroke with near equal splits, besting her previous time by 14 seconds gaining a new best time and qualifying for a ‘BB’ time. Her 1650 freestyle time (21:04.62) smashed her previous time by six minutes and qualified as another ‘BB’ time. Holly Robinson, 15, broke personal bests with her 200 freestyle and her 200 back-
