Location: Tours start from City Hall Changing of the Guard Ceremony – With a flash of scarlet and a skirl of pipes, history comes to life! The Canadian Army was born in 1884 with the establishment of the Infantry School Corps, Company ‘A’ in Fredericton. Watch as period-dressed guards reenact a drill ceremony to the beat of a piper and drummer. Location: Officers’ Square – Historic Garrison District Outdoor Summer Concert Series – Sit back and unwind while you take in one of our free outdoor concerts featuring some of New Brunswick’s top performers. EDVENTURES PARTNERS The edVentures program is centred primarily in downtown Fredericton. The majority of workshops take place at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD). Some of the Heritage and Traditional Craft workshops take place at Kings Landing Historical Settlement (37 km from downtown) and culinary workshops take place at The Station.

NBCCD is unique in Canada, offering post-secondary programs focused in Fine Craft and Design. Its awardwinning faculty, students, and graduates contribute significantly to the high quality of artistic entrepreneurship and creative innovation in New Brunswick. Led by local food writer and instructor Karen Pinchin, you’ll learn all this in the beautiful kitchen of The Station.

Market to Table: Cooking with Fredericton’s Bounty

This workshop will bring you up-close-and-personal with the best producers and products this market has to offer. Starting with an early-morning sampling tour of the market, participants will have a chance to chat one-on-one with vendors. You will then make your way to the well-appointed kitchen at The Station and prepare a fabulous three-course French-inspired feast for lunch with wine or beer pairings.

Clothing Pattern Development (Introduction) Instructor: Pat Galbraith • Dates: July 21 – 25 • Length: 5 Days Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $300 • Materials Fee: $30 Would you like to design completely original clothing? Something that will amaze your friends and colleagues? Join Pat Galbraith in this five-day workshop as she teaches you to transform brown paper into something exceptional. Learn pattern development for fashion design - some quarter scale, some full scale – mock ups will be fitted for a bodice, skirt and pant. Bring your basic sewing skills and leave with a new talent.

Fashion Illustration Instructor: Tracy Austin • Dates: July 12 & 13 Length: 2 Days • Level: Beginner Workshop Fee: $140 • Materials Fee: $25 Do you have magnificent designs in your imagination that you cannot transfer to paper? This introductory workshop introduces basic illustration styles and techniques to aspiring fashion illustrators. Tracy will demonstrate and guide each participant as they work on drawing, sketching, and textile rendering skills needed to s. create illustrations on either male or female figures.

Serger Basics Instructor: Joanne Venart • Date: July 12 • Length: 1 Day • Level: Intermediate Workshop Fee: $70 • Materials Fee: $20 Note: Participants are asked to bring along their own Serger and basic sewing kit. A $10 loan fee will apply to those who do not bring along their own machine. This needs to be reserved when registering for the workshop. How’s your tension – a little too taut? Perhaps things are loose and coming unravelled? Then it’s time you took this one-day Serger workshop with costumer Joanne Venart. Through demonstrations and hands-on experience, you will have the opportunity to learn how the Serger machine works, how to troubleshoot problems, and play with its potential. Take home your finished sampler as a reminder of all the techniques and applications you can master. Stop coming apart at the seams!

Aboriginal Ash Basketry Instructor: Katie Nicholas • Dates: July 28 – August 1 • Length: 5 Days Level: All Levels • Workshop Fee: $300 • Materials Fee: $60 The Aboriginal Ash Basketry workshop is a hands-on workshop that will include information and demonstrations on the process of obtaining ash splints from the ash log that are used in making the baskets. Participants will be taught how to make three different kinds of baskets that are traditional to the Maliseet people p of the area (a fiddlehead, square and round fancy basket). Participants will learn every aspect of ash basketry beginning with preparing the ash splints in order to weave each basket. Following the preparation of the ash splints, participants will learn the layout, the weaving processs and the finishing process of each individual basket, as well as the color dye process and curl technique of the fancy baskets. Participants will leave the e workshop with 3 beautiful baskets and the knowledge of a craft born from a culture that is a part of New Brunswick’s heritage. 21

Herbs, Medicines and Teas Instructor: Kings Landing Interpreters • Location: Kings Landing Historical Settlement • Dates: July 19 or August 2 • Time: 1 – 4pm Length: ½ Day • Workshop Fee: $40 • Materials Fee: N/A Mr. Jones’ pneumonia was cured with a mustard plaster. Susie fell and cut herself badly so her mother made a temporary scab using flour to stop the bleeding. Mrs. Wright sat her baby in a bath with cornstarch to relieve diaper rash. This half-day workshop with the settlement’s medicine lady will give you a wealth of knowledge. Using common, household ingredients, herbs from the garden, or native plants growing along the roadways, you will make salves, poultices, and teas, sure to cure the ailments of any family.

Heritage Woodworking Instructor: Kings Landing Interpreters • Location: Kings Landing Historical Settlement • Date: July 19 • Time: 1 – 4pm • Length: ½ Day Workshop Fee: $40 • Materials Fee: $10 The Kings Landing tradesmen are always busy filling orders for customers and keeping our village running! Learn some of the tricks and tools of the carpentry trade in the 1800’s and see how it evolved through the century from treadle fret saws, lathes and an array of hand tools to the mechanization of woodworking with planers and jointers at the beginning of the 20th century. Aside from making shingles, hewing logs, house-building and fine cabinetry, carpenters were also tasked with building everyday household items such as boxes, trunks and cutting boards. Join the carpenter for a woodworking tour through history and craft a handmade keepsake using traditional methods.

Your only means of baking gingerbread is the fireplace and several cast iron pots. In this half-day workshop, you will learn to bake using both a wall oven in your fireplace and a Dutch oven. If you’ve got the right amount of coals under, and on top of the Dutch oven, your cake will bake in no time. You have no timer, but you can check your cake with a piece of straw to see if it’s done.

Join the master printer in his 1890 shop where posters, tickets and 22

handbills are printed. Participants will learn about typefaces, point sizes and fonts and how to “set in the stick”. See how to “block the chase with furniture” and set it in one of the two platen job presses. Load the press with ink and print on paper, card and a fabric bag. Aprons will be provided, but participants are asked to dress in old clothes as there is a great possibility you will get inked!

It’s time for a quilting bee! This event was about more than the production of bed coverings, it was a chance for community women to get together and socialize. In this half-day workshop, an experienced quilter will teach you the history of quilting and show you artifact quilts displayed at Kings Landing. You will discuss how to set up and quilt a typical bed covering. Then try your hand at the Nine Patch Star pillow-top that you can take home. Quilt side by side with the costumed Kings Landing staff on a reproduction quilt they are working on in a heritage home and catch up on the gossip of a 19th century village.

In the 19th century, fireplaces were the only form of heat and often died down during the night. When your wool skirts or aprons developed holes in them, you never threw them out. Cloth of any kind was highly valued because it took a lot of time and effort to make it. In this half-day workshop, you will learn the tools and techniques used to hook rugs and work on a reproduction rug with Kings Landing staff. For braided rugs you will sew strips of cloth into long lengths, braid them and then shape them into oval, circular, or rectangular rugs.

In this workshop you’ll learn about different breeds of sheep and the differences in their fleece, as well as how to pick a good fleece. Learn about and take part in washing raw fleece and experience various methods of preparation such as combing, carding and working with locks. You’ll learn everything you need to take this age old precious material into your own fibre arts practice, whether that’s rug hooking, spinning, felting, knitting, stitching, etc. No previous experience necessary.

With a hook and wool fabric, Doris will lead you through a detailed scene as well as teach you about recycled fabrics and how to prepare the fabric for rug hooking. Traditional Rug Hooking (Introduction) Instructor: Elizabeth Bastin • Dates: July 12 & 13 • Length: 2 Days Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $140 • Materials Fee: $65 Note: Participants are asked to bring along a 14” quilter’s hoop and a pair of scissors. All other materials are included in the workshop fee, including the hook. Have you ever wondered how those beautiful hooked mats are made? Why not take two days and try your hand at traditional rug hooking and make a 12”x12” table mat using new and recycled woolen fabrics? There will be plenty of time for discussion about what wool fabric is suitable, where to find it and how to finish your piece. Your kit will include a hook, pattern, backing and woolen fabric. All you need to supply is scissors, 14” quilting hoop, and an interest in learning about traditional rug hooking.

Weave a Rag Rug Instructor: Jacqueline Bourque • Dates: July 7 – 11 • Length: 5 Days Level: All Levels • Workshop Fee: $300 Materials Fee: $50 – $100 (Fee depends on pattern and material you choose, feel free to bring your own material) Participants will start by looking at various designs for rugs. Once a design has been determined, Jacqueline will teach you how to figure out the amount of material you will need to purchase. Once this is determined participants will go together to purchase materials. Some of your own material may be incorporated, so bring that along! The class will make a warp and dress a floor loom as well as learn how to prepare materials for weaving. Finishing techniques will also be explored.

During this five-day workshop, you will explore various methods to create abstract and non-objective painting. Group critique and discussion will assist students to improve their work. Concepts of painting music, cubism, fauvism, and minimalism will also be covered. See how brushes are used in varying degrees of painting.

Learn the basics of pencil and ink drawing with artist Lloyd Fitzgerald, who will start your training with important pencil grips, whole arm motion, shading, practicing the tonal bar and the effect of one tone on adjacent tones, and how to change these tones to best advantage. As the week progresses, students will learn how to apply abstract concepts and techniques to any image, thus giving the student a whole new range of options on how to enhance the final image. It won’t take ts long for you to catch on, and soon you’ll do simple objects and themes with still life and symmetrical designs. The instructor will encourage you through various stages. Take the handouts home and keep your pen and pencil moving.

Egg Tempera Painting Instructor: William Forrestall • Dates: July 12 & 13 • Length: 2 Days Level: Beginner - Intermediate • Workshop Fee: $140 • Materials Fee: $10 It’s easier than you might think to paint with egg yolks! During this twoday workshop, William Forrestall will give a short talk and slide show on the development of egg tempera paint and how it affected painting in Atlantic Canada. You will learn various applications and painting on heavy stock paper. Still life painting may be done outdoors, weather permitting. Participants will critique and discuss individual paintings.

Encaustic Painting: Beeswax plus Pigment Instructor: Sarah Petite • Dates: July 19 & 20 • Length: 2 Days Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $140 • Materials Fee: $30 It sits, molten and ready, in little cans on a hotplate. When it’s hot, it’s wet, and when it’s cold, it’s dry. This weekend workshop will introduce you to “encaustic”,

the intriguing paint medium made of beeswax and colour. With sawed-off paintbrushes and an array of simple tools, we’ll paint, drip, melt, puddle, stamp, scratch, stencil and scrape to get a variety of effects. If you find that you’re “hooked”, we’ll tell you how to outfit your own studio so you can carry on with it.

Topics to be covered include proportion, gesture, anatomy and perspective. The ability to construct figures is important for fine art, comic art, concept art and architectural drawing.

Paint with Ink and Inktense Instructor: Carole Forbes • Dates: August 4 – August 6 • Length: 3 Days Level: All Levels • Workshop Fee: $180 • Materials Fee: $30 Participants will learn the “Carole Forbes” technique of drawing. With over 20 pictures to choose from, you will enjoy drawing what you love. Working at your own pace, on your own picture. You should complete two to three pictures drawing with ink and painting with Inktense pencils and blocks. You will learn to draw as you create your painting. Several local scenes are available, allowing visitors to paint their own souvenir and allowing locals to paint what they find in their own backyard.

Pastel Drawing and Acrylic Tinting

Instructor: Lloyd Fitzgerald • Dates: July 14 – July 18 • Length: 5 Days Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $300 • Materials Fee: $60 So, you know the basics of drawing but haven’t tried pastels? Come broaden your drawing technique with this 5-day workshop. The first morning will be spent on experimenting with the pastels to acquire the feel for applying the chalk on paper and achieving different effects. Once the bare bone technique of applying the chalk is accomplished, participants will be introduced to colour mixing and blending. An exercise in exploring complementary colours will add to your knowledge. Participants will learn the do’s and don’ts for enhancing black and white images with colour. Participants will learn how to apply pastel in abstract techniques to change the image in numerous ways with respect to composition, contrasting tonal values and colour juxtaposition. At mid-week, students will be introduced to a unique experience; tinting on black and white images with acrylic paints. This technique was developed by Fitzgerald and goes far beyond the old practice of photo tinting resulting in an image that takes tinting to a whole new level. Bring along some meaningful photos and you may be able to create a one.

YOUR INSTRUCTORS Austin, Tracy Tracy Austin is a Fredericton native and a New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) alumni who graduated in 2007 from the fashion design studio. She now works as a fashion studio technician for NBCCD and as a freelance artist, working primarily in miniature clothing for ball jointed dolls and illustration. Tracy is inspired by fantasy, steampunk, and botanical themes, all of which can be seen in her work. Bastin, Elizabeth Elizabeth Bastin has almost 25 years experience in rug hooking. She is a member of numerous rug hooking organizations, such as the Rug Hooking Guild of NS, the Heritage Rug Hooking Guild, Evening Matters, Cathedral Matters, and the Fibre Artist’s Guild of Fredericton. In 1998, Bastin became a certified instructor through the Rug Hooking Guild of NS and has taught courses across the Maritimes. She likes to teach beginners because once they try it, they’re usually ‘hooked’. She enjoys sharing her knowledge with interested persons and especially enjoys new hookers becoming engaged in the process of rug hooking. Bourque, Jacqueline Jacqueline Bourque is a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, where she is currently the weaving instructor. She has been a fibre artist for many years. Primarily a weaver, Bourque has expanded her fibre interests to include felting, dyeing, and spinning. She is a member of the New Brunswick Crafts Council and has had her work shown in many galleries around the province. Campbell, Trish Trish Campbell is the proprietor of Fredericton’s only locally-owned knitting store, Yarns on York, recently mentioned in Chatelaine magazine as carrying “every type of wool in a panoply of colours”. With over a decade of experience teaching introductory knitting and more advanced techniques such as cabling, intarsia, and entrelac, Trish is the go-to person in the area for all of your knitting needs. 41

Colwell, Chris Ceramist Chris Colwell graduated with honors from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and operated his own pottery studio for 11 years. He has taught pottery privately, in workshops and at the university level. His award-winning work is held in private collections across the continent. He enjoys the ancient and exciting process of Raku. Cooper, Kristyn Metalsmith Kristyn Cooper graduated with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;distinctionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) in 2008. She has been recognized with such honors as the Nel Oudemans Award from the Shelia Hugh MacKay Foundation (2009), Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2009 Atlantic Craft Awards for Excellence as well as her inclusion at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in South Korea. Cooper is currently employed by the NBCCD as an instructor in the Jewellery/Metal Arts department. In addition to producing one-of-a-kind pieces in metal, she offers a line of limited edition jewellery through select fine-craft galleries. Cull, Jasmine Professional basket maker Jasmine Cull has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Cull was an instructor in the Fibre Arts Studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design for 10 years. She is also a juried member of the New Brunswick Craft Council and the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. Doiron, Chris Since graduating from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD), Christopher has been working with pottery in both stoneware and raku temperatures. Inspired by nature, he hopes to show the spirit and inspiration that our natural materials have to offer through his work. Chris is currently a full-time technician in the NBCCD Ceramics studio and an instructor for the NBCCD Continuing Education program.

Fitzgerald, Lloyd Lloyd Fitzgerald has been a professional artist for about 40 years. When Alex Colville saw Fitzgerald’s early work he suggested that he contact the Dominion Gallery in Montreal. His work was exhibited there for 24 years. Lloyd has also exhibited in Lucerne, Switzerland twice with British sculptor Henry Moore. He is currently represented by James Rottman in Toronto. Fitzgerald’s work can be found in public and private collections in North America, Europe, and the Far East. Forbes, Carole Carole Forbes is a self-taught artist, born and raised in Fredericton. After living and traveling all over Canada and the United States, she has returned to New Brunswick. Carole enjoys the challenge of working with ink and watercolour. The ink allowing her to express the detail she has become known for and the watercolour creates softness to the painting. She has held many solo exhibitions as well as participated in many juried shows and galleries across Canada. Her work can be found in many private collections throughout Europe, Japan, Canada, U.S. and Australia. Her love of the Maritime and Canadian landscape has inspired her to capture its beauty and architecture in her own distinct style. Forrestall, William William Forrestall is one of Atlantic Canada’s leading artists. His paintings have been exhibited in over 120 exhibitions including over forty solo exhibitions. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University and paints full time. He and his father, Tom, share a fascination for the egg tempera-painting medium but their individual work is defined by their own distinctive creative visions. William Forrestall’s paintings often combine the natural beauty of organic elements with the austerity of manmade and forgotten objects. Two full-length books have been published on William’s work. Galbraith, Patricia Years of costuming experience brought Patricia Galbraith to the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design’s fashion design program where she graduated with honors and honed her craft to that of a certified Fashion Designer. Today, Patricia has a custom haute couture business, creating a variety of one-of-a-kind designs for clients requiring a special fit: from tailored coats and jackets for both men and women, gowns for entire wedding parties, as well as her ultimate passion, creating costumes. Patricia’s ongoing contracts with Theatre New Brunswick, keep her in touch with the performing arts community, most recently working on the productions such as: Little Shop of Horrors, Private Lives, Miracle on 34th St, and Velveteen Rabbit.

Gallagher, Trudy Trudy Gallagher is one of Canada’s foremost jewellery designers and a much celebrated and awarded craft entrepreneur. Trudy began as a one woman operation in her basement, and raised her company “Bejewel” into a nationally recognized brand name with a following across Canada, and a fan base that extended into Japan, France, England and select buyers in the United States. Bejewel represented Canada at the Philadelphia Art Craft Museum Show, the 2010 Olympics on New Brunswick Day and was chosen by Ganong as the Grand Prize for the launch of one of their new candies: Jewels. Trudy and Bejewel have also been the award winners of: Atlantic Canada’s Top 50 CEO’s, ACOA’s Top 14 Success Stories and numerous awards of Excellence from the Atlantic Canadian Awards of Excellence. Having served on the Premier’s Cultural Advisory Board, the Fredericton Cultural Advisory board and for over 20 years in numerous positions with the NB Craft Council, Trudy firmly believes in being a role model and advocate for Viable Careers in Culture. Trudy has taught courses for years at Hooper Art Studios, Sunbury Shores, and most recently Le Centre de L’Art au Petite Eglise in Edmundston, and for 14 years at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Trudy has been praised for her attention to detail and quality workmanship as well as her incredible patience and love of teaching. Colour and texture have always been the two primary designs prominent in Trudy and Bejewel’s work. Guitard-Bruce, Glenda As a mature student, Glenda Guitard-Bruce, returned to school to pursue a long awaited dream. It has proven to be a challenge and a joy for Glenda. Her passion for colour and patterns led her to a Diploma in Surface Design and Fine Craft at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. This diverse course inspired and acknowledged an inner drive for her passion. Glenda, a perpetual student, in addition to being an edVentures instructor is also teaching for the University of New Brunswick’s College of Extended Learning. Keely, Alexandra Alexandra Keely is a fibre artist, based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, whose predominant means of expression is felt. Using the wet-felt technique she combines an assortment of fibres and processes to create stunning one-of-a-kind two and threedimensional art pieces. She draws inspiration from social, political, and environmental issues, her own life, and the natural world. As an artist, one of Alexandra’s greatest passions is to share her knowledge on felting, and assist others to discover the wonders of the world of fibre arts. 44

Kennickell, Drew Drew Kennickell is an artist and designer based in Fredericton. An experienced educator, Drew currently works for both the University of New Brunswick as an instructor for the Multimedia Arts and Cultures department and for the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in the Integrated Media Studio. Kings Landing Kings Landing’s Interpreters have taught the history and culture of 19th century New Brunswick for close to 40 years. They specialize in everything from household skills and period trades, to the finest details of artifacts and architecture in colonial New Brunswick. The costumed interpreters of this living history museum actually practice the daily tasks associated with 19th century living, making Kings Landing a cultural pillar of New Brunswick. Visitors from across Canada and around the world have gone home with a vivid understanding of New Brunswick’s history and culture. MacGillivray, Rachel Rachel MacGillivray studied Fashion Design at Ryerson University and, after working in the industry in Toronto, she moved to New Brunswick to follow her love of textiles. She completed the Fibre Arts & Graduate diplomas at the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design. Rachel has won multiple national competitions, scholarships, and awards and has had her work shown in museums and galleries such as The Louvre, The Bata Shoe Museum, The National War Museum, and Government House Gallery. Primarily now a spinner and wool enthusiast, Rachel also uses textile techniques such as knitting, embroidery, quilting, garment making, and image transfer in her work to explore themes of memory and community. Currently, she’s pursuing her arts practice and instructing at the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design. McIntyre, Mary K. Mary K. McIntyre is a Toronto-based sculptor and metalsmith. She has studied at Ontario College of Art and Design University, at Fleming College under Bronfman award-winning silversmith Lois Etherington Betteridge, and at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with Brigitte Clavette. McIntyre’s work has been exhibited in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Fredericton, and is held in private collections in Canada and the USA. 45

Merritt, Leigh Leigh Merritt was born in Fredericton and grew up in the rural community of Tay Creek. After completing his Bachelor of Arts at St. Thomas University, he studied at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design where he earned his Foundation Visual Arts Certificate (2006), a Certificate in Specialty Photography (2008), a Diploma in Fine Craft – Ceramics (2010), and a Certificate in Advanced Studies in Visual Arts (2011). In 2010 he received the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show in Halifax and was awarded the Duffie-Crowell Award at graduation. In June 2010 he attended a ceramics residency at The Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in Alberta. Musgrave, Deanna Deanna Musgrave is a Canadian painter and multimedia artist. Her work was recognized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in 2007 when she was awarded the Studio Watch: Emerging Artist Award and continued into 2012 with the inclusion of her work into the group show “Contemporary New Brunswick Art: An Evolving Collection”. Musgrave’s work has been seen at the 2008 International Toronto Art Fair, the New Brunswick Museum and the Confederation Centre for the Arts Gallery in Charlottetown. During her Bachelor of Fine Art studies at Mount Allison University she obtained the honors of the John P. Asimakos Painting Award and the Crake Performance Award in Fine Arts. She has also had the honour to study under the artists Glenn Priestly in 2010 and Alexandra Flood in 2011. Nicholas, Katie Katie is a Maliseet woman from Tobique First Nation located in Northern New Brunswick. She is a recent graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) with a diploma in Aboriginal Visual Arts and a major in Traditional Aboriginal Ash Basketry. Since Katie likes to express herself in a variety of ways, she also works with several different mediums. In addition to ash, she works in photography, beading, painting with acrylics and mixed media. Katie currently resides in Fredericton and has returned to the NBCCD for her graduate studies. Upon completion, she intends to travel and teach her craft to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities as her way to enhance growth and knowledge of Maliseet culture and heritage.

Norman, Doris Doris Norman is a skilled artisan and instructor who enjoys sharing her passion for rug hooking with others. She encourages students to relax and enjoy the process of creating an heirloom to be passed down to future generations. She teaches rug hooking courses at schools and workshops across the USA and Canada. She is an accredited Nova Scotia and Pearl McGown Teacher specializing in Celtic Art, William Morris Design, Mayan/Peruvian Art, Jacobean/ Crewel, Pictorial, Stained Glass, Primitive Fruit and Realistic Shading. Her work has been featured in Canadian Living Magazine, Rug Hooking Magazine and Hook Me a Story by Deanne Fitzpatrick. Her work is included in the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s Permanent collection as well as other collections. Owen, Sarah Sarah Owen is a fibre artist living and working in Fredericton. She has studied at the New Brunswick College of Craft Design and has participated in group shows at the University of New Brunswick Art Center. Sarah was a weaver in residence at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery during the show The Threads of Her Life in the spring of 2013.

Patterson, Freeman Freeman Patterson is a highly acclaimed photographer, writer, and teacher of visual design who hails from New Brunswick’s Kingston Peninsula. Freeman began teaching photography and visual design in the early 1960’s in Alberta and commenced his annual series of week-long workshops in New Brunswick in 1973. He has also given dozens of workshops in South Africa, New Zealand, USA, and Israel and has completed lecture tours in the United Kingdom and Australia. Freeman has authored a number of books on visual design and photography, including Photography for the Joy of It, Photography and the Art of Seeing, Photography of Natural Things, Photography and the World Around You, and Photo Impressionism and The Subjective Image (co-authored with André Gallant). His other books include Namaqualand: Garden of the Gods, Portraits of Earth, In a Canadian Garden, The Last Wilderness: Images of the Canadian Wild, Shadow Light, Odysseys, and The Garden. He has received numerous awards from various countries and, in 1985, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada and in 2013, he was made a Member of the Order of New Brunswick. From September 2013 to mid January 2014 the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, New Brunswick, mounted a large retrospective exhibition (115 prints) of Freeman’s work, curated by Tom Smart. This exhibition, Embracing Creation, was accompanied by the publication of a book of the same title (125 prints, 12 essays by Freeman and a major essay on Freeman’s artistic career by the curator).

Petite, Sarah Sarah Petite has been painting for over thirty years, twenty five devoted to the study of encaustic paint. Her works can be seen in exhibitions in the region, in several public collections, and on her entertaining website. Petite has taught many workshops in encaustic painting over the years, with considerable experience in passing on the tricks and techniques of this ancient, and newly rediscovered, medium. Pinchin, Karen Karen Pinchin is a longtime food writer and chef who has worked and taught at restaurants and cooking schools in Canada and France. A graduate of the Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver, she has a particular interest in culinary education, traditional preservation methods, agriculture and charcuterie, and is the local food columnist for CBC Radio One’s Information Morning in Fredericton. Scheffers, Juliette Juliette has been a professional potter and clay teacher for 13 years. She maintains her pottery studio in Harvey, New Brunswick. Her specialty is crystalline porcelain and her work has been exhibited in various galleries in Canada and USA. In 2013, she received an artsnb grant for professional travel. That spring, she brought her work to La Bisbal, Spain, where her pieces were featured amongst other acclaimed crystalline artists from around the world.

St-Amour, Audrée After three years of studies in Fine Arts at the Cégep du Vieux Montréal, Audrée St-Amour was introduced to jewellery while traveling through Mexico and Central America. There she found inspiration from traveling and working with young craftspeople selling their fibre, silver and semi precious gemstone jewellery. “Functional and wearable” became assets in her art practice. Looking to get more recognition for her work, she studied one semester at L’école de joaillerie de Montréal. Jewellery has become her main focus and she considers her work as “statement jewellery”; she believes this art form should be deemed a personality extension. Audrée is a 2012 graduate in jewellery/metal arts at NBCCD where she distinguished herself with an aesthetic rich in composition with the use of dissimilar design elements and materials. Since 2011, her work has been exhibited in numerous shows and publication in Canada and in the United States. As she continues developing and creating her own work, she also teaches jewellery at the NBCCD, contributing to the domain of contemporary jewellery.

Stanley, Aidan Aidan Stanley got his first look at how malleable metal can be while preparing copper plates in a printmaking workshop at Sunbury shores in the summer of 1999, deciding then that he would like to attend the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD). While attending NBCCD, Aidan’s work was shown nationally and internationally. His works have been nominated for various design awards, most notably Bacardi’s prestigious martini glass competition “Bombay Sapphire”. Aidan graduated for a second time from NBCCD in 2010, he continues to further his gallery aesthetic, working in series and developing themes throughout his work. Most recently he received an Arts NB Career Development grant and an Arts NB Creation grant to explore the sculpture possibilities found at the conjunction of glass and metal. Stanley, Erica Erica Stanley is a practicing metal artist and instructor from Fredericton, currently spending long winters in Canada’s North teaching Jewellery & Metalwork at the Nunavut Arctic College. Erica enjoys working with her students, exploring their inspiration and ideas then helping make meaning out of the creation of objects. Holding a Bachelor of Arts from UNB, as well as two diplomas from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (Fine Craft and Advanced Studies), Erica is also enrolled in the Certificate of Adult Education at UNB. An award-winning and exhibiting artist, arts-advocate, and teacher, Erica has been with the edVentures program since it began! Venart, Joanne Costumer Joanne Venart has been an instructor in the Fashion Studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design for the past 15 years. She has worked for most of the major theatres across Canada, and has held various positions in their wardrobe departments, ranging from Tailor to Head of Wardrobe. Her main area of interest is in historical costume reproduction that has led work from such organizations as Kings Landing Historical Settlement, the New Brunswick Museum and movies such as “Copperhead” this past summer. Her artworks are in private and theatre collections and have been shown at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Weekes, Gary Gary Weekes has been in the photography industry for over 25 years – first working in camera stores as a salesperson to eventually owning and operating a small but growing photographic business. His commissioned work covers many different photographic disciplines, maintaining an emphasis on quality and sensitivity to his clients’ needs. From working in a large studio in NYC to Hasselblad, UK in London, Gary has an abundance of photographic knowledge and experience from which to teach from. He has guest lectured at the London College of Communications (UK) and was Department Head of Digital Photography at the Centre for Arts and Technology (Canada). He is currently exploring Fine Art Photography, with a view to an exhibition in the near future. Wybou, Deborah Deborah Wybou has been designing and creating jewellery as well as teaching the art of silver wire and chainmaille jewellery for six years. Deborah’s jewellery focuses on the metal, and one of her favourite mediums is sterling silver with or without semi-precious stones. She also works with fine silver, gold, gold-filled and copper. Deborah’s education and background is diverse, she spent much of her life in design, starting with clothing design in her teens and moving to home decorating in 1991. She received a Masters of Business from the University of New Brunswick in 2004. Deborah has over 17 years teaching experience in numerous areas and is the owner of Antithesis Designs.

Cancellation Policy: • If a workshop is cancelled for any reason, payment is refunded in full. • edVentures reserves the right to cancel any workshop seven days before it is to begin if minimum registration numbers have not been met. Class Size: edVentures workshops offer hands-on instruction in an intimate setting. Most class sizes range from 6 to 12, allowing participants to enjoy the experience of an enriching learning environment. There is ample time to have one-on-one instruction and a chance to get to know others in your class. Register early as space in most workshops is limited to a small number. Facilities: The majority of workshops take place at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Some take place at Kings Landing Historical Settlement and The Station. Language: While the majority of workshops are presented in English only, some instructors are bilingual and are pleased to offer their workshops in English and French. A second option for participants who are with us longer than 3 days is to purchase a 5 day pass for the Upper Queen parking lot (2 blocks from the NBCCD on Queen Street) for a special rate of $10 from the Service Centre at the rear entrance of City Hall (limited number available). Once you have registered, your name will be on the list to purchase these exclusive edVentures passes. The Service Centre is open 8:15am4:30pm, Monday-Friday. There are no parking fees Saturdays or Sundays at City of Fredericton owned parking lots or on-street parking meters. Our partners at Kings Landing and The Station each offer free parking in their adjoining lots. Early Bird Discount: We recommend registering early to avoid disappointment as workshop class sizes are limited.
