Welcome!

“Where did summer go?!” Department Mission

The mission of the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities Department is to enhance the lives of our citizens by providing a diverse package of recreation and park opportunities. A parallel mission of the department is to provide optimum service to the general public and staff through the City’s Public Facilities Division by administering a program of routine custodial maintenance, repair and upkeep, scheduled facility improvements and renovations, and immediate response to emergencies or disruptions to the work place or service environments.

Departmental Functions

The Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities is a municipal recreation department that provides comprehensive year round programming for sports, fitness, special interest, events and nature programs for all ages. The department operates and maintains 21 outdoor spaces that offer and encourage activities on our walking trails, playgrounds, swimming pool and the Rappahannock River. We strive to meet the needs of the population by providing affordable programs for City residents and non-residents alike.

As the expression says “time flies when you’re having fun,” and at Parks and Recreation we’ve had lots of excitment with our camps, nature programs, and summer sports leagues. We hope you found time to splash in the pool, play tennis or pickleball at Memorial Park, enjoy a picnic in the park, or ride a bike along the trails.

With fall on the way and cooler weather around the corner, our parks and trails will be even more inviting. We encourage you to enjoy our parks and trails, spend time with your family, and see the other side of our beautiful city. You can still pick up fresh veggies and more from our Farmers Market through October. Fall is a wonderful time to visit Motts Reservoir, rent a canoe or try your hand at orienteering. Motts is a great place to breathe deep, clear your mind and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors. Those of you who are brave enough are invited to join us for “Spooky Stories on the Shore” in October (pre-registration required). School starts in September, but that’s not the only place that young minds can learn and grow. Our Engineering For Kids classes, drama programs and art experiences encourage creativity and are just plain fun! We hope it’s not just the kids who are learning; take time to try something new. We offer programs for adults in everything from bridge to belly dance to visual journaling. Even the family pet can learn something at our Dog Manners classes. As the holidays approach and things seem to get even more hectic, remember to save time for some inexpensive family fun. Thanksgiving Arts and Craft Night, Nature Crafts for Christmas, Family Holiday Tree Trimming, Gingerbread House Building, and Breakfast with Santa give families a chance to make some great memories. And don’t forget to mark your calendar now for the annual Fredericksburg Huber Motor Cars Christmas Parade and our new year end celebration Downtown 31. Both of these events are free and no registration is required. So whether you explore our parks, walk the trails, enroll in class, or cheer on your children as they play field hockey or soccer this fall, we hope you see Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation as a place where you can get connected. Fredericksburg is a great place to connect with so many things, and we are here to help!
