CITY of FREDERICKSBURG

parks& recreation

Department Mission The mission of the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities Department is to enhance the lives of our citizens by providing a diverse package of recreation and park opportunities. A parallel mission of the department is to provide optimum service to the general public and staff through the City’s Public Facilities Divisions by administering a program of routine custodial maintenance, repair and upkeep, scheduled facility improvements and renovations, and immediate responses to emergencies and disruptions to the work place or service environments.

Departmental Functions The Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities is a municipal recreation department that provides comprehensive year around programming for sports, fitness, special events and nature programs for all ages. The department operates and maintains 21 outdoor spaces that offer and encourage activities on our walking trails, playgrounds, swimming pool and the Rappahannock River. We strive to meet the needs of the population by providing affordable programs for City residents and non-residents alike.

Welcome! I’ve always heard that when the acorns start falling early that means the squirrels are preparing for a long, cold winter and it looks like it’s true. While we all want nothing more than to stay warm inside surrounded by family with a board game or good movie, we have exciting new classes that will make you want jump in the car on a winter adventure! As I told you in our Fall catalog, Parks and Recreation is taking a new direction. Our staff here has taken your feedback and spent tireless hours meeting, evaluating, discussing, and planning how to bring you exactly what you want and need. We still have a long way to go, but we have gotten the ball rolling as you will see by the offerings in this catalog. Just to give you a few ideas: By popular request we expanded our Farmer’s Market to reach our Mayfield residents as well as our military families at Quantico. Additionally, to help keep you healthy after you shop the Market, we are offering “Whole Body Herbal Health.” We listened to our local artists and are bringing an array of new photography classes to our department such as “Makeup for Models and Photographers,” “Creative Photography Techniques,” and more. To better prepare our young athletes getting ready to try out for high school sports, we will be having our first-ever Youth Softball Clinic that will be run by local high school coaches. Not only that, but we are bringing back our 3-on-3 Adult Basketball League. In an effort to get our teenagers engaged, we have put together “Teen Time Outside” where teenagers will hang out with their peers and learn a useful outdoor skill such as fire building. Our events have undergone some revamping as well. We have combined two of our popular children’s events, the Children’s’ Art Show and the Children’s Art Expo into one huge creative event now called the Children’s Art Show and Experience. By joining these two events together, it will foster more creative hands-on learning amongst siblings and parents alike. As always we welcome your feedback about our offerings; do you like the new changes? Do you want to see more changes? If so, what would those be? We make sure to take all of the emails, phone calls, and personal visits we get from the residents of Fredericksburg into consideration. After all, we are here to serve you! We hope you enjoy what we have to offer this Winter/Spring and hope to see you at our classes, programs, and events! Sincerely,

Bob Antozzi Director
