Wells “For An Afternoon, For A Lifetime” On the first day of July, 1869, Col. Clark Thompson along with H. W. Holly, and M. Conant staked out 160 acres as a town site of what was to become the village of Wells. The town was named in honor of Thompson’s wife, whose maiden name was Rebecca Wells. Wells holds the distinction of being the first railroad town in the Faribault County. Today, Wells is a thriving community with friendly residents who welcome visitors to see the city of which they are so proud!

Clarks Grove

John Mead Clark preferred farming over business, so in 1855, instead of settling in the nearby village of Albert Lea, he made his home on a beautifully landscaped piece of land surrounded by a grove of oak trees with a lake (Geneva Lake) off to the northeast. Everyone within two square miles began referring to the area as Clark’s Grove, as it is known today. Minnesota’s first cooperative creamery was started in Clarks Grove on May 5, 1890. This town was historically noted for its cooperative business enterprises. Some other cooperative businesses were the grocery, hardware store and lumber yard. Clarks Grove is on record as having the largest rural American Baptist Church in the United States. Historically the town has had a large Danish population & this church was a Danish Baptist Church.

It is told that Charles Lindberg landed his airplane on a field just east of Clarks Grove (about where Interstate 35 is now located). He walked up to the farmer’s residence and asked if he could have some water to drink. This story has been confirmed by those who lived on that farm some years back. Clarks Grove offers a 9-hole Frisbee golf course which was installed two years ago and has two parks, Bob’s Park & Johnson Park, and also offers the Clarks Grove Executive Golf Course.

Blazing Star Trail

Photo Submitted by Angie Moller

The Blazing Star Trail currently consists of 6.5 miles of paved trail. The trailhead is located in Frank Hall Park, which is also the home of the Pelican Breeze II Cruise Boat. The trail will be very unique when it’s completed, winding by lakes, through a state park with eskers and historic Indian artifact collections, through flat farmland and quaint Hayward, then will travel north past the KOA and Par 3 golf course, into very hilly terrain where bikers will enjoy historic stops at "Vanishing Villages" and will actually be able to see original wagon wheel ruts from the settlers moving west. Visit the Blazing Star Trail and enjoy Southern Minnesota’s finest scenery including wildflowers, prairie grass, lakes and abundant wildlife. Photo Submitted by Phyllis Walk

Pelican Breeze, Albert Lea Lake

Pelican Breeze II Cruise Boat Enjoy a breathtaking cruise on picturesque Albert Lea Lake on the new Pelican Breeze II Cruise Boat. The Pelican Breeze is celebrating over ten years of cruising one of the largest natural bodies of water between Lake Minnetonka and the Gulf of Mexico. Sit back and relax on our 60' river boat replica. Enjoy wildlife and the historic sites as your guides describes the area and history behind this charming natural area. The new boat seats approximately 60 passengers, is handicap accessible, has on-board bathrooms, mini-bar and is enclosed for inclement weather. Catering, bar and entertainment are available on request with a cruising season of late May until late October. Photo Submitted by Julie Bronson

Bayside Ski Team Local water skiing enjoyment and entertainment is provided by the talent and dedication of our area youth and their families. Bayside Skiers have had a long history of helping our area youth learn to ski. They are a teaching club with an emphasis in show ski acts including jump, wakeboard, multiple pyramids, doubles, trios, swivel, barefoot tricks and many individual acts. They start with beginners in many cases and warmly welcome all levels of skiers. Their team is unique in that we have families participating at all levels and with all aspects of the show. Bayside Skiers enjoy performing every Thursday evening at 7 pm during the summer months of June through August. The dream team performs prior to all home shows and features our team members who are working on new tricks to entertain the crowd. We also perform on the 4th of July and Labor Day, both shows at 2 pm.

For further information and to see pictures of our team, please check out our web site at www.baysideskiteam.org. 25 CVB Sec. 1 2011.indd 25

Trails

Blazing Star Trail Frank Hall Park, Albert Lea The Blazing Star State Trail runs from Albert Lea Lake in Albert Lea through Big Island State Park. When completed, the Blazing Star State Trail will connect Albert Lea and Austin via Big Island State Park and Hayward. Currently, six miles are constructed between the city of Albert Lea and Big Island State Park. This trail also connects to Albert Lea’s city trail system. Once the trail reaches Austin, it will connect to Austin’s city trail system, as well as the Shooting Star State Trail. Trail users will enjoy views of rural landscapes along the entire trail. Big Island State Park affords the opportunity to experience a diversity of natural environments including wetlands, oak savanna, big woods and prairie. The park is considered one of the many good birding spots in southern Minnesota, especially during spring and fall migration. Myre-Big Island State Park 3 miles East of Albert Lea (507) 379-3403 This park has something for everyone. Located 3 miles southeast of Albert Lea on County Highway 38. Interstates 90 and 35 intersect just north of Albert Lea. Both interstates have signs directing visitors to the park. The trails take visitors around wet lowlands, oak savanna, and grasslands. Albert Lea Lake and park marshes draw hundreds of waterfowl during migration. Oak savanna and prairie landscape, including wetlands, dominate most of the park. One of the more unique aspects of the park is the 116-acre Big Island, covered with maple/basswood forest. Another is the glacial esker located in the northeast section of the park. 43 CVB Sec. 2 2011.indd 13

Parks City Parks & Facilities Our community has abundant natural and historic areas that have been developed into over 300 acres of quality parks, recreation areas, and open space. All of the parks are open to the public, free of charge. Throughout Albert Lea, 41 parks and recreation areas offer a wide variety of recreational and leisure facilities, including neighborhood park playfields, playground equipment, basketball courts, tennis courts, fishing areas, natural open spaces, picnic areas, softball and baseball diamonds, a swimming pool, a civic theatre, a senior center, and an ice arena. Arrowhead Park, Freeborn, MN, established in 1978, is over 100 acres of woods, marshes, trails, and shoreline hugging the eastern shore of Freeborn Lake. Several picnic areas and shelter house facilities are found throughout the park, as well as a boat launch and dock at the north entrance; and, further into the park, horseshoe pits, a playground, and The Point, a rocky peninsula jutting far into the lake. The Point features breathtaking and panoramic views of one of Southern Minnesota’s largest natural lakes. Many spots in the park are perfect for watching the sunset or for an evening picnic. Watch for the huge flocks of white pelicans cruising the lake from late spring until early fall. Arrowhead Park is located 3 miles south of Freeborn. Take County 29 southeast out of town, turn right at County 8, then one mile south and one mile west on 267th Street.
