John Mead Clark preferred farming over business, so in 1855, instead of settling in the nearby village of Albert Lea, he made his home on a beautifully landscaped piece of land surrounded by a grove of oak trees with a lake (Geneva Lake) off to the northeast. Everyone within two square miles began referring to the area as Clark’s Grove, as it is known today. Minnesota’s first cooperative creamery was started in Clarks Grove on May 5, 1890. This town was historically noted for its cooperative business enterprises. Some other cooperative businesses were the grocery, hardware store and lumber yard. Clarks Grove is on record as having the largest rural American Baptist Church in the United States. Historically the town has had a large Danish population & this church was a Danish Baptist Church. It is told that Charles Lindberg landed his airplane on a field just east of Clarks Grove (about where Interstate 35 is now located). He walked up to the farmer’s residence and asked if he could have some water to drink. This story has been confirmed by those who lived on that farm some years back. Clarks Grove offers a 9-hole Frisbee golf course which was installed two years ago and has two parks, Bob’s Park & Johnson Park, and also offers the Clarks Grove Executive Golf Course. WELLS, MN... “For An Afternoon, For A Lifetime” On the first day of July, 1869, Col. Clark Thompson along with H. W. Holly, and M. Conant staked out 160 acres as a town site of what was to become the village of Wells. The town was named in honor of Thompson’s wife, whose maiden name was Rebecca Wells. Wells holds the distinction of being the first railroad town in the Faribault County. Today, Wells is a thriving community with friendly residents who welcome visitors to see the city of which they are so proud!

Ellendale
“Top of the Hill
A great place to call home. In 1900 the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Railroad came through our area on its way north to Minneapolis. Mr. Thomas H. Brown, the town site agent for the railroad, had chosen the Elling Ellingson farm as the location for a new town because it was half way between Albert Lea and Owatonna and had good farm land that could benefit from supplies brought in and produce shipped out on the railroad. The new town was to be named Ellendale in honor of the railroad president’s wife, Ellen Dale Ives, for the many humanitarian works she had done, especially among the railroad employees.
Ellendale Area Farmer’s Market
Is held each Saturday from 9:00 – 11:00 am starting the first weekend in June thru the end of October. It is located next to the Municipal Liquor Store in Ellendale. Anybody who is interested in selling should contact Dan Sorum at 507-688-0514 or email ellendalefarmersmarket@gmail.com.

New Richland owes it origins to the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad which reached the area in 1877 and the Norwegian settlers who were attracted to the rich farmland of Waseca County. From its very beginnings, the founding fathers of New Richland worked toward the betterment of the community with an eye on progress and the promise of a bright future for all citizens. Merchants opened their doors and sold dry goods, medicine and drugs, furniture, coal, hardware, lumber, harness and leather goods, and more. The village supported a depot, two banks, two blacksmiths, three hotels, a school, a jeweler, a flour mill, a newspaper, several meat markets and grocery stores, a creamery, cheese factory, farm implements, Ford automobile dealership, cafes, poultry and egg factory, a movie theater and many other businesses.

Pelican Breeze II Cruise Boat Enjoy a breathtaking cruise on picturesque Albert Lea Lake on the Pelican Breeze II Cruise Boat located at Frank Hall Park. The Pelican Breeze has been cruising one of the largest natural bodies of water between Lake Minnetonka and the Gulf of Mexico since 2001. Sit back and relax on our 60' river boat replica. Enjoy wildlife and the historic sites as your guide describes the area and history behind this charming natural area. The Pelican Breeze II seats approximately 60 passengers, is handicap accessible, has on-board bathrooms, mini-bar and is enclosed for inclement weather. Catering, bar and entertainment are available on request with a cruising season of late May until late October. Photo Submitted by Carol Haroldson
Bayside Ski Team Local water skiing enjoyment and entertainment is provided by the talent and dedication of our area youth and their families. Bayside Skiers have had a long history of helping our area youth learn to ski. They are a teaching club with an emphasis in show ski acts including jump, wakeboard, multiple pyramids, doubles, trios, swivel, barefoot tricks and many individual acts. They start with beginners in many cases and warmly welcome all levels of skiers. Their team is unique in that we have families participating at all levels and with all aspects of the show. Bayside Skiers enjoy performing every Thursday evening at 7 pm during the summer months of June through August. The dream team performs prior to all home shows and features our team members who are working on new tricks to entertain the crowd. We also perform on the 4th of July and Labor Day, both shows at 2 pm.
For further information and to see pictures of our team, please check out our web site at www.baysideskiteam.org.

New Albert Lea Downtown Streetscape The Downtown Albert Lea Streetscape is set to start work in April of 2013. There will be two phases to the project; the first phase will be work done from Fountain Street to Clark Street. The second phase, which will begin in June if the plans stay on pace, will cover Clark Street to Main Street. The plans for the Streetscape were sparked with a desperate need to replace water and sewer lines that are over 80 years old and run beneath the roads and sidewalks. Cosmetic upgrades to the downtown are being funded in part by a $1,000,000 grant from the State of Minnesota.
Downtown Albert Lea’s Wind Down Wendesday
Summer Market & Music Festival June 26, July 17 and August 21, 2013 11 am to 8 pm Central Park, Albert Lea Enjoy live music, art, crafts, food and beverages from local vendors. Visit www.winddownwednesday.com or www.albertleatourism.org for more information.
Bolton & Menk, an engineering firm from Mankato, MN, lists the following as Objectives of Streetscape Design: •D evelop a more pedestrian friendly downtown area with open, wider sidewalks, ‘parklet’ areas at bumpouts, slower traffic via traffic calming measures, and better wayfinding for pedestrians and vehicles alike. • Develop a ‘brand’ for downtown through materials choices, layout, lighting, and signage that respects the architecture of downtown and provides for a better user experience. • Preserve and enhance the historic character of the downtown area. • Develop a more environmentally focused downtown through the use of plantings, alternative stormwater practices, energy efficient lighting, etc. • Create a more barrier free access to downtown – better accommodations for handicapped accessible parking, easier street crossings, access to buildings, etc. • Connect Fountain Park to Downtown and bring more events into the downtown core – Williams Plaza, Water Street Plaza, Farmer’s Market or Art events downtown During construction, access to stores and businesses in the downtown area may be limited. Many businesses will use their back doors for entrance. Be sure to come visit Downtown Albert Lea in the Fall of 2013 or Summer 2014 to see the changes! 47
