FEED Your Marriage Make dining out an adventure. You don’t have to choose just one place to go for the evening. Pick one place to start out with a drink and/or an appetizer, then one for dinner and one for dessert – it’s like a progressive dinner date! It’s a great way to try different places and different dishes and make a whole evening out of it.
It happens easily enough. Between the kids’ practices and school, homework, chores, errands, and working full time, you and your spouse hardly had time to have an entire conversation with each other. Like ships passing in the night, each of you going through your daily routines as parents, falling exhausted on the couch at the end of a long day, too tired to do much else than watch a TV show before bed. It’s important to take time out from work and parenting and just spend some quality alone time with your spouse. At least once a month, you should go on a date together. Get out of the house, without the kids! Put your date night on the calendar. With hectic schedules, if it’s not on the calendar, it probably won’t get done. Soon, months start to slip by, and before you know it, you’re back in that old routine of not taking time to focus on each other and your relationship. Going out to eat is a great way to get out and enjoy each other’s company and let someone else take care of the cooking and dishes for a change! Try out the latest new restaurant in town, or a new menu item at one of our favorite places.
To keep a marriage bond strong and healthy, like you, it needs to be fed -- and a relaxing dinner date, without distractions from kids and housework, is a great way for you to spend that quality time together. Allow yourself that one night without any real responsibility for a few hours, and simply enjoy each other’s company. Remember who you are as people, not just as parents - and have FUN!

Take Time to Take Vacation: The Benefits of Taking a Break Taking vacations regularly is important, whether you actually feel tired or not. Some people feel that they cannot get away from their work because it is too demanding and they feel indispensable. If this is the case, it is probably one of the best possible reasons to take a break from it all. Given that in the long run, fatigue and stress directly affect our physical resistance and mental capacities, a few days of not thinking about work can go a long way to recharging our batteries. Here are a few of the many ways in which taking a vacation can benefit your health: • Relieve stress The very first benefit of leaving everything behind and relieving your brain of all your worries is reduced stress. Several studies have shown a direct link between stress and health conditions such as headaches, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and other types of infections acquired as a result of a weaker immune system. It has also been scientifically established that taking vacations reduces the incidence of burnout. Relief from stress often gives us a new perspective on life, allows us to regain energy and often to find simple and sometimes obvious solutions to problems that had previously seemed impossible to solve. • Improve your mental skills Some studies have found a positive relationship between vacations and
intellectual function. A well-rested mind that is free of worry is often more effective. • Improve your physical health Besides getting you away from daily stressors, a vacation often gives you the opportunity to catch up on sleep and exercise, two simple remedies for many aches and pains. • Strengthen family ties Too often, in our fast-paced daily routine, family relationships suffer. A vacation is a great opportunity to discover each other in a different setting and to build lasting memories. • Enjoy life Taking time off can be a great opportunity to meet new people, laugh and do the things that you most enjoy! Pick a date now for your next vacation and start planning your adventure!

“Traveling With the Professionals”
Young or Old, Tall or Small, Pickleball is a Game for All Pickleball is a combination of tennis, Ping-Pong and badminton. Players use oversize Ping-Pong paddles to hit the whiffle-like ball over the net on a surface about the third of the size of a tennis court. Rules to the game are similar to tennis, but with a slightly shorter net. The game can be played in either singles’ or doubles’ matches. If you’ve ever so much as swung a ping-pong paddle or watched a few seconds of Wimbledon coverage, you’ll learn the game in no time. In a nutshell, you hit the ball back and forth, getting a point for your opponent’s missed shots. The first to 11 wins. However, there is at least one idiosyncrasy that makes the sport unique. Because Pickleball is intended as a family game, to keep things from getting too intense, a 7-foot safety zone, called the “kitchen,” is established on both sides of the net. Players cannot enter this area until the ball bounces, minimizing the chance of a sizzling, intimidating and/or painful return volley. Pickleball not only has the fun factor, but it has many health benefits that go along with the sport. Playing Pickleball can boost your mood and overall mental health, you burn calories, and fewer injuries occur due to the low impact nature of the game. Pickleball specifically works on your balance and agility while it also offers the same benefits of other regular exercise. These include reducing your risk of heart attack and chronic disease, toning your muscles, and increasing your energy. Pickleball is the perfect combination of cardio and hand-eye coordination training. It’s flexible to anyone’s fitness abilities and can be as leisurely or fast-paced as you desire. Pickleball is one of the rare sports that can be played competitive-
ly from elementary school to great-grandparenthood. A 5-year-old child can get in on the action, while his 85-yearold great-grandfather can be his doubles partner. Most of all, Pickleball is a very social sport where you will create friendships anywhere you play. If you are interested in joining the Pickleball craze, the City of Albert Lea has finished the “repurposing “ of three tennis courts by turning them into 6 Pickleball courts. The courts were resurfaced and repainted with permanent nets. You can check out the new courts at Frank Hall Park next to the Albert Lea Aquatic Center. Also, Community Education offers classes on Pickleball and you can visit the Albert Lea Family YMCA and ask about their indoor courts. Try your hand at this up and coming sport – it’s a lot of fun, it’s easy to learn, it’s a great social game and people of all ages can play from young to old! Want to learn more about Pickleball? How to Equip your Kids for It’s never too early to teach kids lessons about money. The following tips are a few ways parents can do just that. Let children earn their allowance with chores so they’ll value their income, not take it for granted. Extra chores provide a way to earn extra cash. Make budgeting easy. Count out five ones and a five dollar bill for a ten dollar allowance. Then teach them to budget, setting aside funds for spending, saving, and gifting or tithing. Don’t give children extra cash because they want something they don’t have money for. Instead, develop a plan to save or earn extra income, or print a credit card for family use. Your kid buys the object of his desire, but has to pay the family back with regular payments from upcoming allowances. Do permit kids to make spending decisions, including some you know they’ll regret. This encourages caution and teaches the dangers of impulse shopping. Take your child to a bank or credit union to open a savings account. Most offer special accounts for children allowing a small minimum deposit. Once the account is opened, take your child to the bank once a week to deposit a predetermined amount of money. This shows the child the importance of steadily saving money. Encourage saving by offering matching funds, much as

Financial Success
401(k)’s do, so this is a real world lesson. Watching an investment grow is an exercise in patience and planning. After saving for awhile, kids can purchase one stock at a time. By watching the stock markets ups and downs, they learn the risk as well as the rewards. Many banks allow teenagers to open checking accounts and carry their own debit card. They’ll be very embarrassed if their card is declined and quickly want to manage their cash flow. Help them understand and balance their account statement. When a teenager enters the job market, help them with a life-plan balancing work, school, home and play. Avoid disappointment by explaining taxes and clarifying what expenses will be theirs to pay. Teach children the difference between needs and wants. They should work for their income. Let them make spending mistakes and deal with the consequences. As they enter their teens, they will understand the value of money and the value of a budget. If you start early and follow a system of teaching and practical experience, you can help your kids learn the money management skills that will make them smart consumers and financially responsible and successful adults.

DANCE
Dancing can give you a great mind and body workout. Researchers show that dancing regularly keeps the body, including your brain, healthy as you age. It is shown that dancing increases serotonin levels in the brain and can be a great way to relieve stress. The physical benefits are endless as well. Being involved in this active sport increases posture, flexibility and muscle tone and provides weight management.
According to FamilyDoctor.org, S eniors should do some type of aerobic a ctivity for at least 30 minutes every day- dancing is an enjoyable, easy way to accomplish that. Dancing in older adults is proven to increase ones balance and range of motion. In addition to balance, aerobic activity on a regular basis reduces the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and increases overall heart health and mood.
Dance classes for children are a great alternative team sports because children can learn at their own pace. If you have children, channeling their countless energy may be a challenge. Dancing can spark creativity and is shown to calm children with hyperactivity disorder. On the other hand, if a child is shy, dancing can encourage them to reach out to children their own age and be part of a team. After being involved in this activity, academic performances increase and children achieve higher test results. According to EduDance, dance lessons can encourage children to nurture a more positive attitude and explore their own self-expression.
Various types of dancing are found throughout the area , ranging from ballet and ballroom to modern, salsa, tap and jazz. A lot of fitness centers are incorporating dance into the classes they offer, making workout time more fun. T here are many different places you can experience dance; for example, community halls, studios, concert venues and even in your own home. Dancing has become a popular outlet to have fun while keeping fit. It maybehard to take that first step(or should I say, sashay), but once you start dancing, you might not want to stop!

The Healing Power of Pets
The key to aging well is to effectively handle life’s major changes, such as retirement, the loss of loved ones, and the physical changes of aging. Pets can play an important role in healthy aging by:
Helping you find meaning and joy in life. As you age, you’ll lose things that previously occupied your time and gave your life purpose. Caring for a pet can bring pleasure and help boost your morale and optimism. Taking care of an animal can also provide a sense of self-worth. Choosing to adopt an animal from The Humane Society, especially an older dog or cat, can add to the sense of fulfillment, knowing that you’ve provided a home to a pet in need. Keep in mind what kind of pet you are able to care for properly. Cats are less demanding physically than are dogs and may be a good option for seniors who crave companionship but are not willing or able to walk a dog several times daily. Staying connected. Maintaining a social network isn’t always easy as you grow older. Retirement, illness, death, and moves can take away close friends and family members. And making new friends can get harder. Dogs especially are a great way for seniors to spark up conversations and meet new people.
social interaction with the pets and their human companions. Consistent interaction with a pet has been shown to cause an increased release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain which can help calm and soothe a person’s body. This can be helpful for patients with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Owning a pet has a lot of health benefits, so we need to remember that it is important to provide your pet with a healthy diet, exercise, a good environment, regular check-ups and love to keep them healthy too! If you’re not able to handle the demands of owning a pet, The Humane Society offers volunteer or fostering opportunities which allow you to care for pets without shouldering the entire financial or physical burden.
THORNE CREST
Boosting vitality. You can overcome many of the physical challenges associated with aging by taking good care of yourself. Pets encourage playfulness, laughter, and exercise, which can help boost your immune system and increase your energy. Some assisted living facilities and nursing homes use pet therapy to help improve the health of seniors. Regular visits with pets can have positive physical, emotional, and mental benefits. Physical benefits include lowering blood pressure, lowering heart rate, and reducing overall stress. Emotional benefits are reducing anxiety and depression, decreasing loneliness through increasing

Bring Natures Beauty INDOORS Plants are so soothing to look at and many indoor gardeners feel that they add that extra little spark to any room. Plants are also nature’s purifier, taking carbon dioxide out of our air and changing it into oxygen cleansing the air in your home. Mix up your plants; try a few exotics or tropical plants, anything you choose will make your room shine with their fresh beauty and their colorful blooms. To maintain their beauty, here are some indoor gardening tips to keep your plants lush and healthy. Light - Without this essential ingredient your plants will wither and die. Each and every plant has different requirements, so ask the person at the nursery center how much light the plants you are consider will need. Some plants need direct sunlight while others crave indirect sunlight. For a direct sun plant, place the container near a window that faces south. For indirect plants they can be placed near a window but keep them far enough away so their foliage will not burn. Plants that require little light, like philodendrons, African Violets or ferns, can be arranged anywhere in the room as long as a little natural light filters in.
Pests - If you find pests on one plant isolate it from the rest and treat it immediately. Try not to use pesticides on your plants, especially if it is a plant you will eat, like herbs. Pesticide free natural formula for eradication of pests: In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests. Indoor gardening is a great way to keep fresh plants around. If you follow these few indoor gardening tips you will have beautiful houseplants that enliven every room, even when it is cold and dreary outside.

Watering - If you over-water your plants you are subjecting them to insects and disease and you will eventually kill it. Plants hate wet feet, which means over-watering will rot the roots. Once you have discussed the watering needs with the person at the nursery, invest in a water gauge. The gauge will tell you the moisture level of the plants soil. They are extremely helpful in deciding whether to water or not and are a very wise, and a relatively small, investment.
Any One Item in the Store Excludes fresh flowers, Beth Tostenson’s Art, consignment items and special orders. Coupon Expires 10/31/14

Fertilizer - At the nursery center they fertilize the plants so they are beautiful and healthy when you buy them. If you do not fertilize your plants they will droop and wither. Find out from the center what each plant’s feeding schedule should be. The secret to keep happy, lush plants is to fertilize them on a regular basis.

The Power of GIVING BACK Small and local businesses are the economic backbone of our community and those who encourage community involvement can be set apart from their competitors. Studies show businesses that give back to their community have more loyal customers, as well as happier employees. Customers appreciate businesses that make an effort to give back because it shows they care about the community. When someone is blessed with a lucrative business, they come to learn that nothing feels better than earning money on hard work, sweat and tears—except, perhaps, giving much of it back to the community in which they belong.
ment. These are only a few examples of the way our community benefits from the many business owners who wish to invest in their local communities. You, as an individual, can help too! Find something that matters to you most and get involved today to start making a difference in your community. One of the best feelings in the world is giving your time and effort, while not expecting anything in return. The reward for your selfless acts can be a beautiful thing for both you and your community.
Non-profit organizations such as Toys for Tots, The United Way and The Food Shelf are all establishments that flourish during the holiday season. But it is important to give back, not only during the holiday season, but all year long. We are very fortunate to have so many local businesses that do just that! Many of the businesses in our area help to provide our well deserving high school students with college scholarships. In early August, supporters for the Relay for Life came out and raised over $111,000. Manufacturing companies not only support these causes, but have also made donations to help our local sports teams and music programs. The City of Albert Lea was recently able to renovate the Frank Hall Park courts to include 6 new Pickleball courts, and also through donations from the community, brought in money for the nets, poles and other equip-

FROM FARM TO TABLE
Good for Everyone! The Rise of the ‘Locavore’
Locavores are people who pay attention to where their food comes from and commit to eating local food as much as possible. The great thing about eating local is that it’s not an all-or-nothing venture. Any small step you take helps the environment, protects your family’s health and supports small farmers in your area. Many locavores start by trying to eat within a 100-mile radius from their homes and then adjust where necessary, sometimes encompassing an area as large as an entire state or region. The important thing is that by creating a boundary, no matter how large, you are becoming conscious of food’s origin. On average, non-local foods travel 1,500 miles from farm to plate. Locavores argue that eating local supports the economic infrastructure of their local community. In a recent study, 70% of consumers indicated that they would pay more for locally grown food. On average, when consumers purchase locally grown foods, 90 cents on the dollar goes back to the farmer. Compare this to 27 cents for non-local food consumption. This discrepancy adds up over time. A recent study indicated that every 5% increase in regional food consumption could translate into a net benefit of $100 million for the region. As the number of locavores continues to grow, more food buyers
will be met with question: will I buy local? And, as we have already seen, the majority will answer yes. Sourcing local foods in no longer a point of sustainable consumption and community support, it’s good business! So where do you start? Here are a few ideas: Visit a farmers’ market. Farmers’ markets keep small farms in business through direct sales. Rather than going through a middleman, the farmer takes home nearly all of the money that you hand him or her for a delectable apple or a wonderful bunch of grapes. Lobby your supermarket. Ask your supermarket manager where your meat, produce and dairy is coming from. Remember that market managers are trained to realize that for each person actually asking the question, several others want to know the same answer. Let the market managers know what’s important to you! Choose 5 foods in your house that you can buy locally. In addition to fruits and vegetables, it is possible to find meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and cheese—all grown, harvested and produced close to your home. Find out what restaurants in your area support local farmers. You can do this by asking the restaurants about their ingredients directly, or by asking your favorite farmers what restaurant accounts they have. Frequent the businesses that support your farmers.
