PETS Should I Be Using Supplements?
Written by: Michelle Nelson, Owner, The Pet Authority
due to poor quality nutrition, so that is always the first thing that needs to be looked at. But there are also times when your dog or cat just needs some extra Omega 3 in their diet. Fish oils are the most common supplements, but they can vary greatly in quality based on the type of fish, temperature of the water and toxins in the environment. “Cheap” and “good quality” are never found in the same bottle when it comes to supplements.
Most people begin adding supplements to their pets’ diet when their pets start having problems, whether it’s joint, digestive, skin and coat or urinary issues. Supplements are most effective when given as a preventative rather than as a treatment. Good quality supplements need to be started at a young age, when pets are still healthy. As pet owners we need Urinary: Cats are known for having Urinary Tract Infections (UTI’s). From the start, your cat should be put on a Urinary to be proactive about our pets’ health, not reactive. Tract supplement, especially if you are feeding a dry food. Digestive Cats do not have the natural desire to drink water like dogs. Upset: One If they are eating dry food they do not get enough moisture of the top in their diet to keep their system flushed out, crystals develop reasons why and then you end up with UTI’s. Supplements help in keeping people take the pH in balance so the crystals and stones do not form in their fur kids the bladder. to the vet is Digestive Upset. Because the average pet owner feeds a commercially processed food, all the natural digestive enzymes are lost in the cooking process. Digestive enzymes allow pets to get the greatest nutritional value out of their diet, so if the food you are feeding has been cooked (dry/canned food), then supplementing digestive enzymes is a must. Seventy percent of your pets’ immune system is housed in the digestive tract; therefore, adding digestive enzymes boosts your pets’ immune system, keeping your dog or cat healthy.
Hip and Joint Issues: This is one area where pet owners start supplementation way too late in their pets’ life. Pet owners often wait until their pet can’t walk up the stairs anymore, has problems getting up from their bed, or they are in their upper senior years. Once joint damage is done, it is irreversible, so being proactive and using Hip & Joint supplements as a preventative is a must. Large and Giant breed dogs especially should be given a joint supplement starting the day you bring them home. Joint supplements protect your dogs’ joints as the body grows and helps to prevent injury and even prolongs the effects of aging. Medium and small dogs along with cats all need to start on a joint supplement at an early age (5-8 years) as they are constantly jumping off of the couch, your bed, out of the vehicle and those joints take a tremendous pounding. Remember, it’s about protecting the joints before the damage is done. And, if the joint supplement is “cheap”, there is a reason, a good quality joint supplement will be more expensive, but so worth it as your pet ages. Skin & Coat: Most of the time a dry, flaky, itchy skin and coat is Supplement to The Freeborn Co. Shopper/Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017/Page 6
If you are ever questioning when to start a supplement, it’s never too early and it’s never too late, but the later you start the less effective they will be. It is much easier to be proactive than reactive, plus it is much less painful on your pets and less costly on your pocket books in the long run. Always remember, even healthy pets need supplements!

Volunteering for the Good Life!
Jackie Hillman
Executive Director Senior Resources of Freeborn County Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things a person can do, and there are a wide variety of possibilities for you to choose from. You can be a scout leader for area boys or girls, you can volunteer to visit with hospice patients, you can help paint and repair homes, or you can help cook and serve meals at a homeless shelter – the list of volunteer opportunities is endless.
basis, take some time to think about the process before you commit. Here are some guidelines you may want to consider: 1) Volunteer for something you’re passionate about. One of the best reasons to volunteer is that it is tied to something you're passionate about. Maybe you lost a parent to an illness and want to keep others from suffering from the same disease. Perhaps you've always loved animals, but your small living space isn't an ideal home for owning a large dog or multiple dogs. Volunteering for the local humane society may be a better option for you. Volunteering through volunteer programs lets you be devoted to a cause that's close to your heart while spreading that help to others in need. 2) Think about the time commitment both now & in the future. Most of us have very busy lifestyles, so think about what your schedule consists of today, and what changes your life may take say in the next six months and beyond. If there
When we think of the benefits of volunteering most of us think of the receiving end, in other words the person or organization receiving the benefit. However, growing research indicates that volunteering offers substantial benefits to the individual offering the services. Having a sense of purpose can actually lengthen our lives, makes us healthier and happier, increases self-confidence, and volunteering can counteract the effects of stress and anxiety. If you’re considering offering yourself on a volunteer

are a number of changes that will likely happen over time that may take up quite a bit of your time, or possibly take you away from home quite a bit, maybe volunteering isn’t right for you at this time. Or maybe you need to consider volunteering for some organization that you aren’t required to commit to long term. Research has shown that volunteering just 2 to 3 hours per week is an ideal time element to start out with.
3) Will this help my career? Volunteering offers you the chance to experience a new career without a commitment. You can volunteer at an organization that does the kind of work you’re interested in. Employers and future employers always see volunteering as a positive characteristic in an employee. Volunteering can also help you build upon skills you already have and use them to benefit your community and your employer.
to a shared activity together. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to your community. It strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your support network. While some people are naturally outgoing, others are not and have a hard time meeting new people. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice and develop your social skills. Is volunteering right for you? You decide! Everyone volunteers for a variety of reasons, but usually the bottom line is that volunteering just plain makes you feel good. It gives you that sense of purpose that is so important. Everyone needs to be needed. I would encourage everyone to look to your heart and find a purpose that you can find connection to and volunteer to a degree that is comfortable to you. Start out small and grow into something bigger. Remember that both you and the recipient will benefit greatly from your volunteerism.
4) Volunteering connects you to others. One of the best ways to make new friends is to commit At St. John’s volunteers are the heart of our Community. There are many ways to get involved that enrich the quality of life for our Residents. You can volunteer with a level of commitment that suits your schedule as often or as rarely as you wish.

REAL ESTATE caring for your home
Valuable Additions
A home is one of the biggest purchases you will ever make, so it is important that you care for it. Make repairs and improvements when possible. That way, when the time comes to sell your home, you will make a good profit from it. Some improvements are better than others. Here are some of the top home improvement projects that offer the most return. Siding - Is one of the first things people see about your home. Make a good impression with new low-maintenance vinyl siding. Yes, it will cost you, $10,000 and up for most jobs, but it will add curb appeal and attract more buyers when it comes time to sell. Roof - Along with siding, you might want to invest in a new roof at some point. It will add to the curb appeal of your home and protect it and everything within it from the elements. Roofs generally last 20 to 30 years, so once you make the investment, you won’t have to worry about it for years to come. Windows - Replacing windows can be expensive, $5,000 and on up for most homes, but it is well worth it as it can lower utility costs and add to a home’s value. Kitchen & Bathrooms - Nothing turns off buyers more than outdated kitchens and bathrooms. It can be expensive to remodel a kitchen and bathroom, but keeping these rooms up to date can pay off big later. Go ahead and have your kitchen and bathrooms remodeled. Just make sure you stay within the design confines of the home. If your home is modest, keep the remodel modest. If your home is luxurious, go all out. Do your best to create a nice but functional space that will appear to a large number of people. Don’t get personal. Personal does not sell. Attics & Basements - Turning attics and basements into living space can be
costly, but f it will add square footage to your home, it might be worthwhile. The more living space you have, the higher price you can ask for your home. Just make sure the additional space makes sense. If your home offers a lot of square footage already, 3,000 square feet or more, for example, retaining the spaces for storage might be the better route to take. Who needs three more bedrooms when they have five already? Again, make sure whatever improvements you make will suit your home and the neighborhood. If your neighborhood consists mostly of ranch homes with beautifully landscaped yards. Investing in the yard might make more sense than blowing out the roof and adding a second story. If you don't plan on selling your home for some time, you will also want to make sure that any improvements you make will serve you and your family in the future.

Senior Living
Staying Active By, Leah Atz,
Wellness Director, Thorne Crest Senior Living Community
There is a common misconception among all generations about aging which is: older people don’t need or shouldn’t exercise. This statement couldn’t be farther from the truth because aging is a huge reason to start exercising. In fact, exercise can help manage, prevent or maintain many physical ailments that accompany aging such as diabetes, arthritis, hypertension, osteoporosis, edema, respiratory and cardiovascular problems, balance and much more. Scientists have found that staying physically active and exercising regularly can help prevent or delay many diseases and disabilities. In some cases, exercise is an effective treatment for many chronic conditions.
negatively and become weaker. These negative effects all threaten an older person’s independence; weak muscles make it harder to get in and out of a chair, poor endurance makes walking long distances more stressful and bad balance increases the chance of falls and injuries. Another reason to exercise? Money. Being physically active not only has endless health benefits but exercising on a regular basis can reduce the need for certain medications as well as reduce doctor visits and hospital stays. Life is all about taking chances but do you really want to risk your health?

An Invitation to Joy by Pastor Dave Zuleger, of Sojourners Church
We live in one of the most self-sufficient societies in history. Information is usually only a search or click away. We can have a thought of something we’d like and have it ordered within minutes and to our door almost as quickly. You would think that all of that instant gratification and self-sufficiency would take care of all of our problems because we can get what we want, when we want it. Most social media accounts present our very best foot forward or at least strive to give people the kind of look into our lives we want them to perceive, even if it’s not totally true. If you ask almost anyone the question, “How are you?” the answer will come back, “Good,” even if that’s not totally true. Yet deep down, we feel the inconsistency of what we present on the surface and what we feel in our hearts. We try to numb the pain with another vacation, or activity, or hobby, or promotion, and yet it never quite does the trick. These things we use to try to fill the holes in our hearts simply do not ultimately bring the joy we’re looking for.
We exist to make eternally joyful disciples of Jesus Christ through his word in the power of the Spirit to the global glory of God.

FAITH
So, what do our hearts long for that these things can’t provide? C.S. Lewis, a famous author, summarizes it well: If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world. In other words, if nothing in this world can ultimately satisfy us, then it means we were made for another world. Or, to put it really simply: we are made for God. Psalm 16:11 tells us where to find this kind of full, forever joy: In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. It is in God’s presence that we can find full joy. And the good news is that we don’t have to earn this kind of joy, in fact, we can’t earn this kind of joy.
The thing that keeps us from the presence of God is sin. We are all sinners (even pastors!) in need of a Savior. And Jesus, the Son of God, came to die on a cross for our sins and bring us full, complete access to God and full, forever joy that can begin right now. So, stop running after things that will never satisfy the deepest longing of your heart, trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins through his death on the cross, and gain full, unshakable joy now that will last forever in the presence of God.

Faith in Daily Living Gerry Vogt, Owner, Mrs. Gerry’s Kitchen Bible Verse: Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. The way I have lived my life has always been a priority for me. As far back in my life that I can remember, my parents had my two brothers, sister and I on our knees as a family praying together. This prayer time followed immediately
after our evening meal - then we could go play. At bedtime we again were on our knees saying our bedtime prayers. I was brought up in the Catholic Church. On Sunday morning, we were all in church together as a family. There was no excuse for not going and church was always the early Mass 6:00 A.M. All four of us kids attended Catholic School until at least the 9th grade. The beginning of our school day was about 1/2 hour in church, a short mass but always communion, receiving communion has always been a very special time for me. (continued on page 16) Supplement to The Freeborn Co. Shopper/Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017/Page 15
(continued from page 15) In High School, going to church daily was not possible. But Sundays, my family and I were always there. I feel if you don’t start your week correctly by attending Church your whole week is off. I give my Catholic upbringing, and my nine years of Catholic education, credit for getting a good foothold on my faith. After High School, I worked in a bank and grocery store until I met a guy by the name of Jerry Vogt. On our first date, I saw something in him I really liked. I saw his faith and what a great guy he was. As our relationship grew, we talked about religion and our religious differences. Jerry was Baptist and I was Catholic. Before we became engaged, we decided on the Lutheran faith as a compromise, so we could raise our family in one church and we could worship together. Six years after we were married, Jerry needed someone to make salads for him to sell off of his meat truck. Throughout those first years, I prayed a lot, looking for guidance, strength and how to run this new business with no formal education beyond high school. We started with three recipes and my Mom and Dad working for me. We did everything by hand, no machinery involved. Jerry being our only distributor for the first year made it a little easier, but by the second year we had ten distributors. Things got harder to handle with more volume and more distribution. I had and still have this prayer that I have recited many times: Lord, help me remember nothing is going to happen to me today that you and I cannot handle together, as well as, Let go and let God. It is amazing how things turnout when you put your faith in God and ask Him for help, guidance and strength in any situation, even business.

We soon outgrew the small place on 7th Street. We knew we had to build, move, or dissolve the business. Both of us prayed for guidance. The new Northaire Industrial Park was being talked about Jobs, Inc. To open to industry. Well, that is where we are today. To this day, when we have a major decision to make, God is definitely asked to guide us to the right decision. After all, all that we have is God's and we are Gods servants to work His plan that He has for us. Managing the production of our product is only a part of the business. We have up to 240 employees in the summer. Managing people can be the toughest part of running a business. Our feeling is that we treat all of our employees as we wanted to be treated - as Jesus wants us to treat one another. That makes management a whole lot easier. We employ a wonderful group of people! As if our business wasn’t enough work and energy it takes to run a business, we got involved in the Golf Club project. Through many planning sessions, designs, conversations about a million things concerning the project, the question came up by Jerry, “Should we do this?” After many prayers and sleepless nights I said, “Let’s go for it.” Then the recession hit. We prayed and we prayed a lot and the Lord has been by our side all the way. He hears from me daily asking Him to continue to lead us in running the business that is truly His. Jerry and I both strongly believe in giving back to God what is God’s. This is the Bible verse we have followed throughout our life Matthew 22:37 and 39. Verse 37 - Love your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. And Verse 39 - Love your neighbor as yourself.
f o s t i f e n e Th e B Growing in Small Spaces
Gardening
Mary Boorsma, Albert Lea Seedhouse & Garden Center
When I was in college, there were two things I had taken for granted in my childhood
that I really missed: the compost pile and the fresh vegetables. Growing up on a small country acreage meant our food scraps NEVER went to the landfill. But living in a tiny city-bound apartment meant that I had to do something utterly foreign: put my banana peels in the GARBAGE CAN. That was some serious culture shock. I’d also taken for granted the summer march of produce across the picnic table in my backyard. Green table onions dipped in salt, steamed swiss chard with a drizzle of red wine vinegar, yellow crookneck squash, tender and browned in butter. What I slowly came to realize was that you don’t need a hundred square feet of glaciated black earth to have fresh food. You don’t need a community garden plot or even raised beds made of the finest cedar. Putting fresh food on your table requires four things: a container, medium, water and an attention span that lasts longer than a minute. YOUR CONTAINER Can it hold soil? Can water flow out of it? If you answered yes, you may have container that’s plant-worthy. The container coin has two sides: design and function. Maybe you want glazed pottery that’s color-coordinated to match your home’s trim. Or you love re-purposing all those rain boots kicking around in the closet. Perhaps you’re on a tight budget and all you have is an ice cream bucket leftover from your seven-year-old’s birthday party. That’s design. For function think about this: ice cream buckets, suitable for herbs and lettuce, will never hold a tomato up. Likewise, you probably don’t want to put one little basil plant in the three foot brass urn by the front door. Containers have to drain excess water and they have to be sturdy enough to support what you’ve put inside them. Beyond that, dream big. YOUR MEDIUM And I’m not talking about the person you hired to chat with your long-deceased grandmother. I’m talking about the stuff that holds your plant’s roots down. Maybe you’ve heard the famous quote, “You grow plants in soil, you sweep dirt off the floor.” Well, the quote isn’t famous, but it’s true. What you put your seeds and plants into matters as much or more than the seeds and
plants themselves. The best mixes are going to be light enough that you can move the pot after it’s filled, but substantial enough to provide support and nourishment. Most of us aren’t set up for aquaponics (growing fish under plants: protein AND veggies, that’s two of the four food groups!) Or perhaps you’ve seen the plant version of a Keurig: countertop gardening systems complete with lights, specially formulated plant foods and special seed pods that sprout cherry tomatoes, lettuce, herbs and more. For the rest of us, a bag of potting soil will do the trick. For a while. If you want to do the trick all summer, don’t forget the food. Growing a plant in a pot is like bringing a week’s worth of groceries to the cabin and then staying there all summer. You WILL run out of food. Fortunately plants are not like your fussy teenager, demanding Applebee’s boneless chicken wings at 10 pm when you’ve finally finished the dishes and have poured yourself a glass of wine. (What, that’s only at my house?) You can feed your container plants with time-release fertilizers, water-soluble fertilizers, compost teas, worm castings. Just don’t do what I did one summer. I knew a little compost would help my flowers flourish all summer, so I grabbed a couple forkfuls from my compost pile and mixed it into the potting mix. And my lipstick impatiens floundered all summer. They just never took off like they had previous summers. That fall, after the first frost killed them off, I dumped the soil back into my compost and found a lively colony of red wriggler worms. They’d been multiplying in my compost and I’d moved several to my containers, where they found nothing to eat but the roots of those lovely lipstick impatiens. Sigh. (Now selling red wrigglers! Great for fishing! E-mail me!) YOUR ATTENTION SPAN When you have a plant, in a container, in the hot sun, it’s going to run out of water. That plant is heaving water skyward all day, losing precious molecules through the leaves. If you don’t water that plant, once, twice or even three times a day, you are going to have trouble. Not the capital T that rhymes with P kind of trouble but the capital T that rhymes with C that stands for crispy. This is where your attention span comes in. Or your chore list for your kids. Water your container. Don’t forget it. That sums it up. Fresh food. As close as your back step.

The role of exercise in cancer reduction
Cancer can strike without warning. Although there is no way to prevent cancer, there are certain measures people can take to help reduce their risk, and exercise is one of the more effective ways to do just that. The National Cancer Institute notes that there is substantial evidence to support the idea that higher levels of physical activity are linked to lower risks of several cancers, including colon cancer, endometrial cancer and breast cancer. In addition, a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that leisure-time physical activity was associated with a significantly decreased risk of not only these three cancers, but also esophageal cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer, kidney cancer, and myeloid leukemia, among others. As many as one-third of cancerrelated deaths can be linked to obesity and sedentary lifestyles, so it’s easy to see the relationship between exercise and a reduced cancer risk. One of the more important ways that exercise may lower cancer risk
is through the reduction of estrogen and insulin levels in the body. Women with high estrogen levels in their blood have increased risk for breast cancer. Although estrogen is a reproductive hormone, it is also contained in fat cells. Exercise can help burn fat and lower the amount of blood estrogen in the body, thereby lowering a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. Exercise also can decrease the potentially harmful effects of obesity, which are linked to the development of insulin resistance. Although the precise mechanisms and pathways are uncertain, it is becoming clear that hyperinsulinemia (insulin resistance), and possibly sustained hyperglycemia, are important regulators of not only the development of cancer but also of treatment outcome. Insulin resistance has been linked to the development of tumors in cases of breast and colon cancers. Exercise also can reduce cancer risk by: • reducing inflammation, • altering the metabolism of bile acids in the gastrointestinal tract, helping to decrease exposure of the body to suspected carcinogens, • improving immune system function, and • boosting mood and feelings of well-being. Additional research is needed to study the link between exercise and cancer risk. However, based on observational studies, existing studies support the notion that regular exercise can go a long way toward reducing cancer risk.

Why dental hygiene is essential for overall health
The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile. Many people are surprised to discover that oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health. Research indicates that oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. Also, regular dental visits can alert dentists about overall health and pinpoint if a person is at a risk for chronic disease. An oral health check-up also may be the first indication of a potential health issue not yet evident to a general medical doctor. Heart disease According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and conditions such as heart disease and stroke. Joint teams at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, found that people with bleeding gums from poor dental hygiene could have an increased risk of heart disease. Bacteria from the mouth is able to enter the bloodstream when bleeding gums are present. That bacteria can stick to platelets and subsequently form blood clots. This interrupts the flow of blood to the heart and may trigger a heart attack. Brushing and flossing twice daily and rinsing with mouthwash can remove bacteria and keep gums healthy.
beginning in 1986. The Harvard researchers found that men with a history of gum disease had a 64 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with men who had never had gum disease. The greatest risk for pancreatic cancer among this group was in men with recent tooth loss. However, the study was unable to find links between other types of oral health problems, such as tooth decay, and pancreatic cancer. Alzheimer’s disease Various health ailments, including poor oral health, have been linked to a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In 2010, after reviewing 20 years’ worth of data, researchers from New York University concluded that there is a link between gum inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. Follow-up studies from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom compared brain samples from 10 living patients with Alzheimer’s to samples from 10 people who did not have the disease. Data indicated that a bacterium — Porphyromonas gingivalis — was present in the Alzheimer's brain samples but not in the samples from the brains of people who did not have Alzheimer’s. P. gingivalis is usually associated with chronic gum disease. As a result of the study, experts think that the bacteria can move via nerves in the roots of teeth that connect directly with the brain or through bleeding gums. These health conditions are just a sampling of the relationship between oral health and overall health. Additional connections also have been made and continue to be studied.
Facial pain The Office of the Surgeon General says infections of the gums that support the teeth can lead to facial and oral pain. Gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease, as well as advanced gum disease, affects more than 75 percent of the American population. Dental decay can lead to its own share of pain. Maintaining a healthy mouth can fend off decay and infections, thereby preventing pain. Pancreatic cancer In 2007, the Harvard School of Public Health reported a link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. In the ongoing study, 51,000 men were followed and data was collected

Worksite WELLNESS Why Workplace Wellness is Important Freeborn County Minnesota Submitted by Alice Englin, Freeborn County SHIP Coordinator
Most industry literature and research agree that the typical return on a workplace wellness program is said to be from $3-$6 for every $1 invested, with savings realized 2-3 years after implementation. Employee health affects more than just medical costs. A healthy workforce is a more productive workforce. Did you know that between 70 to 90 percent of health care spending is caused by preventable, modifiable health risks? Unhealthy lifestyle choices often lead to chronic diseases and promoting healthier behaviors can really pay off. There are many different types of wellness programs. The essence of these programs is to encourage individuals to take preventive measures to avert the onset or worsening of an illness or disease and to adopt a healthier lifestyle. As healthcare costs continue to rise, it makes sense that addressing the specific needs of an employee population and maximizing the engagement and participation of workplace wellness programs is critical.

FALL HARVEST SAFETY During the fall harvest season, countless hours will be spent in combines, tractors, trucks and other equipment by farmers and workers who will be transporting large equipment on our roads and highways. Some workers may be young, new or inexperienced, so it’s always a good suggestion to go over safety considerations with all workers to teach or reinforce the importance of safety on the farm. Agriculture ranks among the nation’s most hazardous industries. Farmers are at very high risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries, and farming is one of the few industries in which family members, who often share the work and live on the premises, are also at risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries. HERE ARE A FEW SAFETY TIPS: • Read operators manual(s). • Install Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs. • Wear seat belts. • Put equipment in neutral or park, engage parking brake, and turn off engine before dismounting. Wait until all mechanisms have stopped moving before attempting to service or unclog a machine. • Locking hydraulic cylinders or supporting the head prior to working under it is always recommended.
Supplement to The Freeborn Co. Shopper/Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017/Page 20
• Limit riders on equipment! Instructional seats are designed for training or diagnosing machine problems. • Keep all guards in place. • Take breaks. Get enough sleep. • Train all operators to safely operate the equipment. • Fatigue, stress, medication, alcohol and drugs cause you to not focus on tasks. • Have all safety equipment in proper condition and ready to use such as safety glasses, hearing protection and respiratory masks. • Have ROPS (rollover protective structures) fitted on tractors.

FOR YOUR
Financial Needs Easy financial tips to get on track
Money is something that individuals usually need more of but frequently find in short supply. People worry about money a lot. According to the YouGov poll for the Institute of Financial Planning and National Savings and Investments in Great Britain, nearly two-thirds of respondents worried about their finances, with 43 percent saying they worried about money more often than not. Things aren't much different in the United States, where a recent survey from Lincoln Financial Group showed that 53 percent of respondents worried about having enough money for retirement. Taking charge of personal finances may seem like a difficult undertaking, but you don't have to make drastic lifestyle changes to grow your savings. Try these tips to save more and live a more financially-conscious life. • Keep financial records. It's hard to determine your financial standing if you do not prioritize record-keeping. Find a method that you can stick with consistently. Some people prefer old-fashioned bookkeeping with pen and paper, while others may like the convenience of software and mobile apps. Having financial matters clearly visible in black and white can show a clear picture of how much money is coming in and how much is being spent. • Explore auto-withdrawal and deposit. Many financial institutions offer several services to customers that can make banking and money management easier. You can set up a savings account and have money automatically deducted from your paycheck and deposited into this account. Even small deposits add up over time. You also can arrange for automatic bill pay so you don't have to worry about accruing late fees for missed payments. Check with your bank or credit union about these types of services. • Put a change jar in your house. Change might not be popular, but it is money. Having a jar or bucket in a location of the house where you set your wallet or purse may encourage you to save that loose change for something larger. Place loose change in the jar and watch it add up. Some banks have coin-counting machines, which can make it even easier to cash in your change. • Sign up for shop-and-earn programs. Everyone from credit card companies to major retailers offer incentives to repeat customers. These include cash-back or other perks for a percentage of the money spent on purchases. These programs equate to built-in discounts and can help you squirrel away even more money without making a conscious effort. • Consider investing. Investing can put your money to work in exchange for a return. There are many different types of investments Supplement to The Freeborn Co. Shopper/Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017/Page 22

If you are an investing novice, work with a financial planner or broker who can help you find a level of risk you are comfortable with. • Pay off debt. The earlier you can get rid of outstanding debt, the better. Put money toward high-interest loans and credit cards so you aren't paying so much in costly interest charges. Afterward, you can start saving in earnest. Learning to take charge of personal finances early on can set you on a course for financial stability throughout your life.
