The business of hosting

Make your business dinner a success

Doing business over dinner is as old as business itself. When done correctly, a business dinner can lay the foundation for a lasting and fruitful partnership between company and client. If the business dinner somehow goes awry, those clients may never come back. Such a reality means those trusted to host a business dinner are under a lot of pressure. However, hosts can take several steps to ensure their business dinner is likely to be remembered for all the right reasons and not the wrong ones. Invite early When hosting a business dinner, it’s best to give prospective or existing clients at least one week’s notice. Anything less than a week will seem too last-minute and might give clients the impression, whether true or false, that a host and his company are disorganized and sloppy. When taking a client to breakfast or lunch, the invitation can be extended with less than a week’s notice, but no less than a few days in advance. Make it work for you When extending a dinner invitation to a client, hosts must be certain the night works for them. Canceling or postponing a dinner makes clients feel like they aren’t a priority while also giving them the impression their hosts are disorganized. Before extending the invitation, be certain there are no scheduling conflicts the night of the dinner. Make a reservation Nothing is worse than taking a client to dinner and having to wait to get a table. Once the invitation is extended, make a reservation. Even if the client cannot make it, it’s possible to cancel the reservation. When choosing a restaurant, look for one with an established reputation, and preferably one you have patronized in the past. Avoid restaurants with loud music or ones that are considered trendy, as such locales are often louder and less conducive to conversation. Another thing to discuss when making the reservation are the seating arrangements. If the restaurant is known for its views, reserve a table with a great view and make sure the clients get the best seats at the table. Clients should not be looking at the wall or sitting in a busy location, such as outside the kitchen or near the bar or restroom. Pay in advance. Not all restaurants will allow it, but when making the reservation ask if it’s possible the pay the bill prior to the dinner. Ideally, the bill should not come to the table. However, if the restaurant won’t allow the bill to be paid in advance, grab it once it’s left on the table and then quickly look it over before paying. Never argue over the bill when hosting a client for dinner. If need be, save the receipt and call the restaurant the following day. Confirm the dinner The day before the dinner, call the client and confirm the date. If the client cannot make it, don’t get flustered. Simply

extend another invitation to a date that’s yet to be determined and cancel the existing reservation. Be the first to arrive Hosts should arrive first and never leave a client waiting. Upon arrival, give the maitre d’ your credit card. Don’t be afraid to tell the maitre d’ you are there for an important business dinner and consider tipping in advance. It might just lead to more attentive service throughout the night. Be nice with the staff Being rude to the restaurant staff or complaining loudly about the service or food will likely turn off the client. Be polite with staff and, if need be, excuse yourself from the table and discreetly discuss with the server any problems with the service away from the client and the table. Go easy on the alcohol Fans of the AMC television series “Mad Men” might feel the best business deals are those consummated over a couple of bottles of scotch. Though that might have been the norm in the 1960s, such an approach is largely outdated. A sipping drink, such as a glass of wine, is most appropriate, and limit yourself to one or two glasses. If the waiter is liberal with the refills and the client is taking full advantage, don’t be afraid to excuse yourself from the table and discreetly ask the server to stop refilling glasses or offering another bottle. Get down to business Let the client talk about business whenever he or she chooses, but if business doesn’t come up wait until after the main course has been completed to bring it up. Hosting a business dinner can be stressful, but hosts can follow a formula to ensure clients get the right impression while having an enjoyable night out.

Wells Federal Bank Current interest rates are at historic lows and have made purchasing a new home or refinancing your current home realistic and much more affordable, even in today’s weak economy. Rates today are at an all-time low with most home mortgages averaging between 3.5% - 4.5%. Nan Hanegraaf, Loan Officer with Wells Federal Bank said “There are many opportunities for financing in today’s market. In the 90’s when I purchased my first home, first time homebuyer rates were at 8.5%. Today’s low interest rates create much more buying power for the borrower.” She added, “Many customers are excited to find the housing payment they qualify for is within the same range they are currently paying for rent.” In spite of some public misconceptions, many lenders do have money to lend and are writing loans to qualified borrowers. Hanegraaf said, “Wells Federal wants to lend money. We have an excellent supply of funds and the Bank has very high liquidity.”

Although lending has become more documented over the past couple of years, the same guidelines still apply when applying for a loan. Credit scores, job history, income and assets are still the most important factors that bankers look at when approving a new loan. When asked what the most important thing a borrower can do to prepare for working with a lender, Hanegraaf recommends, “Be aware of your credit. Credit history to a lender is equivalent to a resume to an employer. It should boast credit strengths and leave little room for weakness.” There are many financing options and opportunities in today’s market. If you are contemplating buying a new home, refinancing your current mortgage, doing home improvements or other capital purchases, speak to your lender or visit Nan Hanegraaf at Wells Federal Bank.

Six Ways To Pamper Pets Pets are an important component of a household. The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that 63 percent of all households in the United States feature one pet or more. Today’s pets are genuine members of the family, and pet parents want to do as much as they can to pamper their cats, dogs, birds, and small mammals. Dogs, cats and other pets are acquired through a number of methods. Statistics indicate that most pets come to families from friends or acquaintances for free or low cost. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, 10 to 20 percent of cats and dogs are adopted, while only 2 to 10 percent of animals are purchased from a pet store. Individuals who want to go above and beyond in their treatment of pets frequently push pampering to the limits. Some people treat dogs and cats as if they were children, with all of the same benefits. Thousands of dollars a year may be spent being sure these animals live the high life. Whether this has any benefit on the animals well-being is debatable; the fact remains that individuals spend quite a few dollars caring for their pets. Those who want to take pampering to new levels can consider these ideas. 1. Pet treats: While the occasional catnip or dog bone is a nice idea, there are entire bakeries designated to whipping up gourmet delights for pets. Many feature organically grown food items that are human-grade. Cakes, cookies and the like can be purchased that fit with the specific diet and tastes of the pampered pet. 2. Doggie daycare: Why leave the pooch home alone when he or she can hang out with other tail-wagging friends? There are a number of businesses that now cater to the canines and offer fun activities and socialization for dogs who would otherwise be latch-key pups. Some daycare

centers offer accommodations that mimic home, such as cozy couches and quiet corners in which to curl up. Furthermore, they enable dogs to catch up with their friends, a necessity when Mom or Dad won’t let them log onto Facebook. 3. Home away from home: Instead of sending pets to a boarder when individuals are on vacation, people are choosing to take pets along. Road and Travel magazine has reported that many pet parents approximately 78 percent of them often take to the roads or the skies with their pets in tow. There are many pet-friendly accommodations, and travelers have been known to compare amenities and regulations when choosing a hotel/motel for their trips. 4. Pet birthday parties: One in four pet parents in the U.S. have admitted to celebrating their pet birthdays, according to Best Friends Pet Care. Some go as far as hosting a birthday party in honor of the birthday pup or kitty. Some pet sitters and daycare centers actually will host pet parties where other animals can be invited to celebrate. Pet parties are growing in popularity and can be quite lucrative considering the millions of pets currently in the country. 5. Spa treatment: From lapping in a heated pet pool to receiving a massage, some pet owners treat their favorite friends to relaxation treatments. Gone are the days of a simple bath and haircut at the local groomer. Today’s dogs and cats can receive massages, aromatherapy and acupuncture while enjoying additional resort-like amenities. 6. Spending time: Of course, one of the easiest ways to pamper a pet is simply to spend time and devote attention to the animal. After all, most animals are content with some love and affection from their owners. Some hugs and other affection may be the only thing pets need to feel pampered. But most people go above and beyond that.

Freeborn Lumber Company There are not many family owned lumber companies in the United States. John and Cindy Miller are an exception to that statement. They are the third generation to own Freeborn Lumber Company. John’s Grandfather and Father purchased the company in 1946 and served the town of Freeborn and the surrounding communities. On September 7th, 2007 fire destroyed Freeborn Lumber Company’s offices, showroom and the original building. After going through the turmoil of the fire and weighing all of their options the Millers decided to relocate their business on Plaza Street in Albert Lea. Their Albert Lea location is the results of coordinated efforts by the Millers, over 20 employees and many of the local contractors in the

area. They feature beautiful display areas for many products. As you walk through the kitchen area, your imagination works overtime while visualizing the cabinets, counter tops and flooring in your own home. It is the same feeling when browsing though the beautiful doors, fireplaces and windows, shingles and siding. They feature quality current design to enhance your home or office. Healthy and quick breakfasts

For busy school mornings

Breakfast has long been referred to as the most important meal of the day. It is beneficial for students heading off to school to enjoy a meal before they catch the bus. Studies have found that children who eat a healthy breakfast have higher energy levels and better learning abilities than similar students who do not eat breakfast. Harvard University researchers found that those who eat breakfast are significantly more attentive in the classroom and have fewer behavioral and emotional problems. Many families find that time is not in abundance in the morning when they are getting ready for school or work. As a result, breakfast might be skipped in an effort to get to work or school on time. But families can skirt the issue of time with a few on-the-go foods the whole family can enjoy. * Individually packaged yogurts make a healthy and quick meal for anyone in the family. A good source of protein and calcium, yogurt is also filled with helpful bacteria that promote digestive health. * Microwaveable convenience foods come in various shapes and sizes. Choose the healthiest options among them, such as whole-wheat or multigrain waffles or pancakes. These foods are easy to heat and eat on-the-go. * Keep a container of fresh fruit salad in the refrigerator. A bowl of mixed fruit is refreshing and

healthy. * Whole grain granola bars that feature fruit and nuts can be a quick meal and a satisfying snack. * Smoothies made from fruit and yogurt are fast and can be stored in portable cups to take in the car on the way to school. * The cereal aisle at the local grocery store is filled with healthy breakfast options. Cereal manufacturers are increasingly reducing the sugar and boosting the fiber content of popular brands. It doesn’t take long to enjoy a bowl of cereal, even one topped with banana slices or a few strawberries. * Whip up a fast egg sandwich. Saute egg whites in a frying pan and place between two slices of toasted whole wheat bread. * Make a batch of low-fat, high-fiber muffins over the weekend. Grabbing a muffin and a banana is an easy breakfast. * Instant oatmeal is available in a number of flavors and is a very healthy and filling breakfast option. * Create parfaits with layers of vanilla yogurt, fruit and granola. * Use a sandwich or panini maker to create homemade breakfast tarts. Fill bread or pitas with fresh fruit or peanut butter and use the cooker to seal them shut. For families who simply can’t get in the breakfast swing of things, many schools participate in breakfast programs. If children are routinely missing breakfast at home, find out how to enroll them in breakfast served at school. Supplement to The Freeborn Co. Shopper/Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011/Page 9

Embrace Life, No Matter What by Nancy VanderWaerdt State Farm® Agent

Have you ever heard, “If I had only had more time” As people grow older, some may have regrets about all the things they did not do. Not taking an exotic trip or missing visits to family members might top the list. Your list might even include “not running a marathon.” One of the biggest regrets may be not telling a loved one how much you care. One thing is for sure: The more you enjoy your life and prepare for the unexpected, the fewer regrets you may have. While no one can possibly do everything on a lifetime to-do list, there are plenty of ways to show people you care. One way is to make sure your family has the financial means to continue living

We also feature a variety of shows aimed at specific interests such our large Bridal Show, Toy and Train Shows, Craft Shows, Doll and Ornament events and Back to School Style Shows. Watch for the many new events planned for the mall in 2012. One of the little known facts about the mall is that we are a tornado and inclement weather shelter for travelers, the ball parks and anyone on this side of town that needs to get out of bad weather. The mall has seen many changes in the last years due to the economy. We are continually looking for new businesses to open on our mall. The next year should see a number of new tenants doing business here in Albert Lea. The merchants at the Northbridge mall want to thank everyone for supporting the economy by shopping locally!

their current lifestyle if you are no longer around. Life insurance is one way to do just that. A strong economic foundation includes adequate life insurance coverage; enough to cover a mortgage, college tuition or outstanding debts. There are many online sites, including statefarm.com®, that provide calculators to determine your life insurance needs. A qualified insurance professional can help you choose a policy to meet your needs and fit in your budget. Once a policy is in place, you can revisit it, especially during different life events, to make certain the coverage is still appropriate.

Block party

An ideal way to celebrate warm-weather holidays

The warm-weather season is often awash with opportunities to host parties and other celebrations. The months of summer and fall are commonly a prime time for birthday parties, graduations, celebrations of many kinds and general social occasions among friends and neighbors. A block or neighborhood party can be a distinctive way to have a good time and share celebrations on a group level. Who hasn’t walked or driven by a neighborhood and felt a tinge of envy when he or she came across a block party in full swing? Laughing neighbors spilled out onto front lawns, children enjoying the freedom of prancing in the street, barbecues smoking and coolers overflowing with ice and drinks are just some of the elements to assail the senses. There’s bound to be a deejay or some amusement-type rides to complete the picture, too. Chances are the celebrations continue into the evening hours. Although a block or street party may seem like it can simply be thrown together with a few conversations among neighbors, there is actually a good deal of planning that should go into executing a neighborhood event. Getting Started: At the start, a committee or group leader should be put in charge of organizing the event. This is often the person on the street that is friendly with the most people and has a rapport that enables him or her to easily converse with the neighbors and gauge their feelings about a block party and what date would work best. Very often neighbors will be on board with a party idea. It’s safe to expect opposition from a few. These people are under no obligation to participate and can be urged to spend the day elsewhere if a block party would seem intrusive. The next step is to find out if the town or city has any ordinances regarding neighborhood parties or if a permit needs to be granted. Because hosting a block party often means closing the street to traffic, it’s advisable to visit the town hall and find out about the legality of such an event and the guidelines that must be followed. This may include what time the “noise” should cease. Once approval has been granted, the creative ideas can start flowing. Party Planning: Volunteers will be needed to handle the undertaking that is a block party. Funds also will have to be allocated for the event. Some towns have grants available for social events, but very often members of the community hosting the party simply donate an agreed on amount of money to be put toward the festivities. In addition to money, there are a few other areas of consideration. * Food: Resources can be combined to have food catered or to purchase items that will be cooked in bulk and enjoyed by all. However, it is often easier for each individual household to be in charge of their meal for the day. Barbecue fare is some of the simplest food to feed a

crowd, and backyard grills can be moved to the street with grill masters donning aprons and spatulas. * Refreshments: Again, homeowners may want to have their own coolers filled with soft drinks. Though alcoholic beverages are commonly found at social events, they shouldn’t be the cornerstone of the celebration. All it takes is one inebriated individual who gets out of hand for law enforcement to close down the party. A budget can also be set aside for treats, such as hiring an ice cream truck to stop by and give out treats for a set amount of time. * Entertainment: Chances are block party attendants will want to be entertained. There should be activities for both adults and children. Party rental businesses can be contacted for rides, moonbounce inflatables, clowns or magicians, and carnival-inspired games. A deejay or band can be hired for musical entertainment. If budgets don’t allow for that, put one person in charge of music and have a playlist of songs available. If performers will be available, one neighbor will have to donate an electrical hook-up so that amplifiers and instruments can be plugged in. * Accessories: It’s often the little details that can make block parties fun. Party supply stores carry a host of items that can coordinate with a theme. Online retailers may offer some better deals on bulk items that can be used, such as glow sticks or necklaces. Sparklers (if they’re legal), light-up bands or hats and items of this sort can illuminate the evening while revelers are enjoying themselves. * Advertising: Invitations or postings around the neighborhood are a must to spread word of the event. Volunteers can solicit local businesses to donate an item for free advertising as well. The more people, the merrier the event will likely be. Neighbors should be encouraged to invite family members and friends to the event. Wrap Up: Each neighbor should be in charge of cleaning up his or her property, as well as the area of the street immediately in front of his or her home. If budget allows, a sanitation service can be hired to sweep the street afterward. The party organizer should be sure to send around an itemized list of what was purchased and how the donated money was spent to promote good will among the neighbors. If there are funds left over, these can be allocated to next year’s event if it was a success. Thank you notes to volunteers and donors can be sent out as well. A neighborhood block party is a unique celebration idea that fits well with the warm-weather season when people are out and about. Organizing the event can help ensure it is one to remember. Tips to Make Your Start-Up A Success Becoming a business owner is a goal for maney women. Starting a business is seldom easy, but the process can be streamlined when a person knows the steps to take. The Center for Women’s Business Research indicates that on average, women own over 10 million businesses in the United States and employ around 20 million workers. Female-owned businesses account for over $2 trillion in sales. Female entrepreneurs are collectively known as “Janes,” and they are a big part of the country’s financial landscape. For women who want to become Janes, there are certain steps to take to develop and launch a business. There are many resources that can help women and men start a company. The Small Business Administration is one of them. Here is some of their guidance in doing so. * Find a mentor. There are organizations like SCORE and Women’s Business Centers that provide free resources online and locally for the prospective small business owner. Individuals also can connect with current business owners in the neighborhood and pick their brains about the best way to begin. * Write a business plan. This may seem like an intimidating part of starting a business, but getting thoughts written out in black and white can be a good organizational step. However, there’s no specific formula for a business plan. Listing the type of business, marketing ideas, competition, and financial data is a good place to start. Also, having a business plan in place may make it easier to secure a loan.

* Secure legal representation. There are certain business laws and employee laws that an individual will need to know to avoid fines and other legal recourse. Securing legal representation ahead of time can help prospective business owners navigate the legal system. * Budget and plan for marketing and advertising. It’s important to get the word out about the new business. While this can start with family and friends, eventually the efforts will have to go beyond. Think about community-based activities that can advertise the new business. Work with schools and community organizations if yours is a niche business for children or seniors. A Web site and newspaper advertising, both in print and online, can be a good starting point. Keep in mind that it can be a few years before small business owners start to realize a profit on their efforts. So don’t give up too easily and soon another successful “Jane” will be part of the economy.

* Secure funding. Businesses require start-up capital. Some small business owners have their own savings they’ll be devoting to the business, while others solicit investors. The majority of business developers apply for a business loan. This is where a business plan can be an asset. Also, grants may be an option. According to the SBA, some business grants are available through state and local programs, nonprofit organizations and other groups. For example, some states provide grants for expanding child care centers, creating energy efficient technology and developing marketing campaigns for tourism.

A Healthy Wake-Up You love your morning juice and toast. Nothing says "Wake up!" like a glass of orange juice and a couple slices of toast. Unfortunately, all of that bread you're consuming every morning is starting to catch up with you-in your waistline. Time to shop for healthier bread.

tigrain, you won't know for sure until you see the percentages of the grains included. If they're low, chances are you're not getting the healthiest choice you could be. The same principle applies to the fiber. The bread should be high in fiber as well, with two to three grams per slice.

While white bread certainly tastes good, it is not necessarily the healthiest. The healthiest breads consist of 100% whole ingredients, either whole grains or whole-wheat flour. Any less than that indicates the presence of something else, probably white flour, which offers very little nutritional value. When white flour is refined, the germ and bran are removed from it, reducing the nutritional value considerably. While some manufacturers add vitamins and minerals back in, enriching the bread, some do not. Check the label on the bread and make certain the first ingredient listed is 100% whole grain or 100% whole-wheat flour.

Pay attention to the serving size. One serving may consist of more than one slice of bread, which, in turn, will affect the nutritional values listed. The bread might contain two grams of fiber per serving, but only one gram per slice. Do the math and know the nutritional value of one slice of bread, in particular the calorie count. The healthiest breads contain less than 100 calories per slice. Don't assume the bread is low in calories just because it is called a light bread. It may have more air or thinner slices, neither of which will make it filling.

Don't stop your review of the label there. Check out the rest of the ingredients listed, in particular the grains and the fiber. How much of each are there? Although the bread may be referred to as a mul-

Take your time when shopping for bread. Don't be fooled by the claims on the packaging. Study the labels, know what the bread really consists of and select the healthiest choice for you. Your waistline will thank you
