7 Healthy Benefits to Owning a Pet Michelle Trihus, Owner of Ranch & Pet Supply Many of us are pet owners, but do you ever stop and think about the many health benefits we enjoy as a result of owning a pet? 1. Prevents Allergies & Improves Immunity: It all starts from the time we are born. Studies show that infants are 19-33% less likely to develop pet allergies when they are exposed to pets in the house. Pet dander acts as natural immunotherapy. Children living in a household with pets have an improved immune system resulting in less school being missed. 2 Weight Loss/Maintenance: Owning a dog is like having your own personal trainer. Dogs need to be walked at least once if not twice a day forcing us as pet owners to “Get off the couch” and get active. Best of all you are saving a monthly gym membership fee and your personal trainer is satisfied with a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ear (and maybe an occasional “healthy” treat too) as payment.

5. Improves Mood & Raises Self-Esteem: There is nothing better than coming home after a hard day at the office where nothing seemed to go right and you walk in the door and you would think the President just walked in. Your faithful companion is so excited to see you and wants nothing more than your undivided attention. Pets love unconditionally, they don’t ever judge, giving people a greater self-worth. While petting your dog or cat, your body releases oxytocin, a stress-reducing hormone associated with emotional bonding, and in return your pet releases it too. 6. Combats Loneliness & Reduces Anxiety: Whether you are young and living by yourself or it’s just you and your spouse once the kids are gone, pets provide great companionship and help combat loneliness. They give you a reason to get up in the morning (most likely to go to the bathroom). No one likes to be lonely; this is exactly why therapy dogs are used in hospitals and nursing homes. Alzheimer patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is a pet in the home.

3 Reduces Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Levels: Having a pet keeps us moving throughout the day. From little things like letting them out to go to the bathroom to feeding and grooming them, pets keep us moving. By walking and playing fetch with our dogs, we are constantly on the move, what could be better for your cardiovascular health.

7. Helps People Socialize: Most people can talk for hours about what their pets do to entertain them, their funny behaviors and even their not so funny doings. It is easy to have a conversation with a stranger in the dog park when you start talking about your pets. They can even improve your dating life.

4 Prevents Strokes & Lowers Stress: Studies show pet owners are 30% less likely to suffer a stroke than non-pet owners. Heart attack survivors have a faster recovery rate due to the decreased stress level that pets provide. Studies also show that having a pet around reduces stress even more than the presence of your spouse.

Owning and caring for a pet is not always convenient in our busy life styles, but with the numerous health benefits it makes sense to own a four-legged friend. So let’s add some candles to your birthday cake - adopt a pet from your local Humane Society, and start enjoying the unconditional love and the healthier life that only pets can provide.

Keeping Yourself Motivated Joe Tscholl & Kelly Kennedy, Personal Trainers at Snap Fitness, Albert Lea

Most of us have a great start to an exercise program that’s full of determination, and hopefully ending with a healthy goal. As we all know, for some it is a struggle to keep up that positive excitement, and motivation to reach our desired look. Truth is motivation isn’t something that “just happens”; it’s something that you have to find within you, and work at every day. Now the question becomes “How does one keep themselves motivated enough to reach their fitness goals?” Here are 5 great ways to help keep you flowing with motivation for your workouts. 1. Set Small Goals: Don’t set yourself up for a fail with goals that are hard to reach, your only leading yourself up for

a disappointment. Start off with easy to achieve specific goals like “I want to lose 5 pounds this week”; then move up towards bigger goals down the road. Once a routine is established, you can work out harder, do more in each session, and add more goals accordingly. 2. Reward yourself: Setting appropriate goals for yourself is a must, and don’t be afraid to reward yourself once a goal is achieved. This could be treating yourself to a movie, a good book, or that “something special” you have been wanting. Keep in mind, if you are working out to lose weight, do not reward yourself with food. 3. Workout buddy/ trainer: Having a workout partner is a great way to help you achieve success in pursuit of your fitness goals. Here are three reasons way.

- Partners are great at keeping each other accountable, and motivated during hard or low times. - You are more likely to show up to the gym when you have a partner waiting for you. ( Same concept on how personal trainers work) - Working with a partner, you tend to work out at a higher intensity, burn more calories, getting your heart rate up, and pushing yourself that “extra” step.

5. Brag and Post: When you hit a goal, or did an amazing workout, TALK about it, put it on one your social networks. (Example: Facebook, Twitter) Let everyone know you are reaching for a major goal. You will find many people that share your same goals, and can add to your support group.

4. Make it FUN!! By no means should your workout ever become boring or repetitive. If something with your workout does make it hard to focus, shake it up. By adding new workouts to your routines, or music you can look forward to your next workout and not dread it.

Yours for the Making By Kevin Blake, Collective Spirits Have you ever thought about making your own beer or wine? Collective Spirits Home Brew Shop is here to help! Let’s start with wine. We have everything it takes to brew up your favorite glass-- be it a Washington Columbia Valley Riesling, a New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon, maybe a French or Chilean Chardonnay, or what about a nice Italian Piedmont Barolo, maybe a French, or my favorite, Napa Valley Stag’s Leap District Merlot? There are well over a hundred wines from all over the world that you can make right in your own home--all in the form of a kit. They are quite simple, and depending on the style, they are done in 4-8 weeks. Most are delicious even young, like right out of the carboy (glass jug you make it in), before it even makes it to the bottle. It takes 20 minutes to start and in a matter of weeks and a few simple steps—presto…you have the best wine on the block!

If you are working on filling a cellar, try to throw a few on the rack and leave them for a couple to three years and you really do have bragging rights. Like I said, try leaving them on the rack, aging is the toughest part. All with a fraction of, not only price, but all the preservatives you may not like--I do mean a fraction! Go to www.Winexpert.com and check it out and email us at collectivespirits@hotmail.com and we will send you a free catalogue/wine guide of all the kits and food pairings for each wine. For you beer cats (yeah, I know a few of you), if you enjoy good beer and microbrews, then you need to be making your own. The world of beer flavors and styles is exploding and there is nothing like the one that you make yourself. As with the wines, you can brew any style beer you want. For starters, we carry 40 different Brewers Best Kits from which to choose. Email us for a free brochure of some mouth-watering brews sure to impress. We have all the malts, hops and yeast to invent your own concoction and have expanded into 50 lb. bags of malt from Minnesota`s own, Rahr Malting. If you’re a seasoned brewer, check us out. We have over 40 hop varieties and we just stuffed the cooler with a new shipment of Wyeast for the winter brew season. Remember, the best beer starts in YOUR kitchen. It`s time to taste the freshness and enjoy the savings. Home brewing has become more than a hobby, it`s a lifestyle!!

Red Light Therapy - More than Skin Deep Red Light Therapy is a type of anti-aging treatment that has recently gained popularity, but has shown amazing results for years. Discovered by NASA, infrared light has a stronger wavelength which enables it to penetrate deeper into the skin and provide many therapeutic benefits. Unlike cosmetic surgery, red light therapy is non invasive, cost-effective and risk-free. Similar to the sun, infrared light provides a warming effect without the presence of UV rays. When used consistently, red light therapy can help skin appear younger, smoother, more radiant and vibrant, by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne and age spots. Aside from its cosmetic and anti-aging benefits, red light therapy can provide relief from chronic and acute pain including muscle pain, joint pain, arthritis, high blood pressure, tissue and nerve damage, and can decrease injury healing time.

Red light has the ability to stimulate the production of ATP, an important source of energy in body tissues. This helps increase blood circulation, which reduces swelling and inflammation. It also works to repair damaged tissues, increases collagen production and aids in wound healing. ATP also activates endorphins that provide soothing relief from chronic and acute pain. Because red light therapy triggers the body’s own defenses, it actually treats the sources of pain and doesn’t just mask the symptoms. Recommended therapy schedules are 3-4 days per week, for 4-6 weeks. With no damaging effects, only positive results, it’s no surprise red light therapy is a great new way to improve your appearance and health. Visit www.redlighttherapyinc.com for more information.

Beat the Winter Blues - Plan a Getaway! Many people suffer from what is commonly called the winter blues. The seasons change, and, along with your tan, the sunny chirpiness of your world gives way to winter’s chills. Don’t let the fight against Mother Nature get you down; instead, get on down to Mexico, or one of these other top winter vacation hot spots! Tahiti -- Pile up as many sick and vacation days as you can muster and escape to Tahiti’s most accessible island. Encircled by a reef about a mile from the shore, Moorea’s coast enlivens your desire to swim, kayak, and snorkel. You may have come to sit on a chair and read, but the warm Technicolor blue waters, rainbowcolored fish, and dazzling coral reefs hypnotize you to enter the sea. Hike to waterfalls, rent a moped and tour the isle, surf the epic breaks that inspired the creation of the sport. California -- If skiing Olympic-class slopes brings some glee to your day, while the masses head to Whistler this winter, sojourn to Lake Tahoe. Tricksters and novices negotiate the slopes at Squaw Valley and Heavenly; cross-country skiers hoof it for miles at Royal Gorge. A hot cocoa sipped by the fire, then a dip in the hot tub with the snow glistening in the moonlight promises a rich wintery sleep that will bathe the winter blahs away. Brazil -- Waters house playful (and, if you are a strong swimmer, approachable) dolphins and sea turtles.Villages perch atop cliffs, with expansive views of the azure Atlantic rolling perfect waves below. Easy rainforest hikes introduce you to cheeky Brazilian mini-monkeys (that nearly snatched our lunch) and splendid sea views. Brazilian surfers love the long point break, while local shoppers and eaters appreciate the sophisticated offerings in town. On a rare day off from sunbathing, take a day trip to Natal to have a white-knuckle ride on the dune buggies. Hawaii -- Aloha spirit lives strong on Hawaii’s eldest isle. Slow-paced Kauai, with her country lanes, farm stands selling organic banana shakes, bubbling waterfalls, and verdant landscape may not be Hawaii’s most sophisticated destination, but she sure is its most alluring. Kauai’s natural riches make you happy your cell phone doesn’t always get service. The symphonic bird call, plumeria perfume,

baffling double rainbows, resident monk seals, hidden redwood forest, and divine gardens remind you why this Hawaiian island is the top choice for savvy outdoors lovers from around the globe. India – India is generally too hot for Westerners in the summer, but is definitely worth visiting in the winter when it is cooler. The culture is amazing and must be explored via the markets, shops and historical buildings in the center. You can even hire a boat and sail for a while around the marina. Dubai caters to the tourist trade and looks after its guests well, as is demonstrated by the hospitality. A winter break seems to be becoming more popular as the years go by. Winter can be depressing if the sky is grey and your mood begins to mimic the weather. A break can lift your spirits, and these diverse but cultural places can help to give you a new lease of life!

The Game of a Lifetime Golf has a range of health benefits for people of all ages and can help to combat a number of illnesses. Many people today are not as physically active as previous generations – simply because our jobs are largely ‘sedentary’. Medical experts recommend around 30 minutes per day of ‘moderate’ level exercise to help to stay healthy and combat illness associated with low physical activity levels.

Moderate level activity includes such simple exercise as walking – which is an intrinsic part of golfing. Golfing also involves a range of other skills and beneficial exercises and can be an excellent way to maintain health or improve it. Happy 26th anniversary to the Northbridge Mall… yes it has been 26 years since the Mall opened in 1986! Many things have changed in these past years but one thing that remains constant is our desire to provide a variety of goods and services to the residents of Albert Lea and surrounding communities. The Mall has a fantastic variety of merchandise, services and dining and entertainment that make us your complete shopping area. Visit us for restaurants and the food court, Cinema 7 theatre, game room, department and specialty stores, book and gift stores, hair care, tanning, fitness center, travel, employment and investments. We’re more than a Shopping Center. We feature many events and shows through out the year providing the community with informational and special events. Some of these shows include the Science Fair, Kids Outdoor Expo, Girl Scout Cookie Sales, Taste of Heritage, Red Cross Blood Drive,

Women’s Expo, Halloween Trick or Treating, Easter Egg Hunt, and so much more! We also feature a variety of shows aimed at specific interests such our large Bridal Show, Toy and Train Shows, Craft Shows, Events and Back to School Style Shows. Watch for the many new events planned for the Mall in 2013. One of the little known facts about the Mall is that we are a tornado and inclement weather shelter for travelers, the ball parks and anyone on this side of town that needs to get out of bad weather. The Mall has seen many changes in the last few years due to the economy. We are continually looking for new businesses to open in our Mall. The next year should see a number of new tenants doing business here in Albert Lea. The merchants at the Northbridge Mall want to thank everyone for supporting the economy by shopping locally!

Enjoying the Great Outdoors Start Enjoying Outdoor Activity! Did you know that Americans spend an average of 90 percent of their time indoors? Over 95 percent of work was performed manually with human hands at the turn of twentieth century. Today, less than 3% of all labor is performed manually. Technology has increased productivity but caused us to live an indoor lifestyle that’s sedentary and inactive. These two factors have significantly increased disease and obesity in the US. Health Benefits of Outdoor Recreation Research indicates that spending time outdoors is associated with a host of physical health benefits. These benefits include: increased cardiovascular function, reduction of blood pressure, accelerated healing, disease prevention,

Vitamin D production, weight loss, weight management and more The benefits are not only physical. Outdoor activity can also improve your mental health. Enjoying the great outdoors can decrease stress levels, enhance your mood, alleviate symptoms of depression, improve self-esteem, and reduce anger and tension. While many indoor activities tend to be more isolated and solitary, outdoor activities tend to encourage social networking and connectedness. Types of Outdoor Recreation As you can see, there are so many benefits to spending time outside. So let’s get outdoors! There are many outdoor activities and hobbies that can be enjoyed: Walking, Hiking, Running, Mountain Biking, Cycling, Swimming, Bird-

watching, Gardening, Golf, Tennis, Softball, Baseball, Soccer, rock climbing, kayaking or canoeing, motorcycling, four-wheeling, boating and fishing, auto racing, disc golf, hockey, horseback riding, hunting, camping, nature photography, and so much more! These are just a few of the recreational activities that can be part of your outdoor lifestyle.

How is Your Financial Health? In the midst of a busy schedule, many people forget to step back and take stock of their financial situation on a regular basis. But the Minnesota Society of CPAs (MNCPA) recommends doing a financial checkup at least annually to be sure that you’re making smart choices with your money and staying on track to meet your near- and long-term financial goals.

Check your credit scores All consumers have the right to receive a free credit report every year from each of the three credit rating agencies. It’s important to keep tabs on your score because it is used by lenders to make decisions about whether you should be given a loan and how high the interest should be. A high score will put you in a better position to qualify for loans and lower borrowing costs. To see your report, you can contact each of the three main agencies (Equifax,

Experian and TransUnion) or access them all through www. annualcreditreport.com. Checking your reports is important to ensure there are no inaccuracies and to spot potential identity theft if there is unexplained activity on your account. It also may be a good wake-up call to let you know that you need to address your high debts or bad payment history if they have taken a toll on your credit score.

Review your retirement savings No matter what stage you are in life—just starting out in a new job or at the peak of your career—you should be putting away at least a little something in a retirement account on a regular basis. If your employer offers a 401(k) or other retirement savings plan and matches your contributions to it, keep in mind that you are actually losing money by not taking advantage of the matching funds the company offers. In addition, be aware that accumulating a retirement nest egg over

time is much easier than trying to save an unrealistic amount in a hurry during the years right before you quit working. Saving over a long period gives your money a better chance to grow over time. There are also many tax-advantaged options for retirement savings that you may be missing out on. If you want to learn more about the best retirement savings options, remember that your CPA can help.

how much you can cut back. And don’t forget to pay yourself by including a savings contribution in your monthly budget. We need to keep reminding ourselves of the one of the most important rules of money management: “Spend less than you earn”, and then - and only then - can we surge ahead along the path to financial health...and really start living “The Feel Good Life”.

Keep to your budget Unfortunately, for many people it’s tough to stick to a budget because they don’t actually have one. But that’s easily remedied by listing your regular monthly costs—everything including rent or mortgage, utilities, car payments, commuting costs, grocery expenses and more—and deducting them from your regular take home pay. If you end up with a negative amount, then it’s time to make some cutbacks so you can live within your income. If you have a little bit left over but you’d like to have more, there are many steps you can take. First, flag all the items on your expense list that could be cut back. If you still end up short of cash, begin keeping a daily log of all you spend. You may be surprised at how much you’re dropping on impulse purchases or costly indulgences, like a daily macchiato or takeout meals. Continue keeping a close eye on what you spend and you’ll probably be amazed at

Cycling is one of the easiest ways to exercise. You can ride a bicycle almost anywhere, at any time of the year, and without spending a fortune. Many people are put off doing certain sports because of the high level of skill that seems to be required, or perhaps because they can’t commit to a team sport due to time pressures. Most of us know how to cycle and once you have learned you don’t forget. All you need is a bike, a half an hour here or there when it suits, and a bit of confidence. Cycling builds strength and muscle tone, increases muscle tone, builds stamina, improves cardio-vascular fitness, eats up calories, improves heart health, improves coordination, and Cycling reduces stress. Meat Quality 101 Appearance The visual identification of quality meat is based on color, marbling and waterholding capacity. The meat should have a normal color that is uniform throughout the entire cut. It should also have marbling throughout the meat. Marbling is small streaks of fat that are found within the muscle and can be seen in the meat cut. The marbling will increase the juiciness, tenderness and flavor the the product. Waterholding capacity can be witnessed by looking at the package, if excess water is found in the bottom of the retail package, it may lead to a dry cooked product. The cut should hold water within the meat to add to juiciness

Juiciness Juiciness depends on the amount of water retained in a cooked meat product. Juiciness increases flavor, helps soften meat - making it easier to chew.

Tenderness Tenderness can be attributed to a person’s perception of meat. Tenderness has been linked to several factors, such as the animal’s age, sex or the muscle location. One important way to tenderize meat is by aging. Meat is aged by holding it at refrigeration temperatures for 2 to 4 weeks makes the meat more tender.

Flavor Flavor and aroma are intertwined to create the sensation the consumer has during eating. These perceptions rely on the smell through the nose and on the sensations of salty, sweet, sour and bitter on the tongue. Changing cooking methods can affect the flavor of the meat. Dry heat cooking will change the flavor on the outer portions of the product, while wet cooking will change more of the inner tissue taste. Smoked and cured products will also have a distinctive flavor.

Water retention and lipid content determine juiciness. Marbling and fat around edges helps hold in water. Meat aging can increase water retention and therefore increases juiciness. Using proper cooking methods, such as cooking slowly and/or with moist heat, can increase juiciness.

Embrace Life, No Matter What Nancy VanderWaerdt, State Farm® Agent

Have you ever heard, “If I had only had more time” As people grow older, some may have regrets about all the things they did not do. Not taking an exotic trip or missing visits to family members might top the list. Your list might even include “not running a marathon.” One of the biggest regrets may be not telling a loved one how much you care. One thing is for sure: The more you enjoy your life and prepare for the unexpected, the fewer regrets you may have. While no one can possibly do everything on a lifetime to-do list, there are plenty of ways to show people you care. One way is to make sure your family has the financial means to continue living their current lifestyle if you are

no longer around.

Shift into savings.

Life insurance is one way to do just that. A strong economic foundation includes adequate life insurance coverage; enough to cover a mortgage, college tuition or outstanding debts. There are many online sites, including statefarm.com®, that provide calculators to determine your life insurance needs. A qualified insurance professional can help you choose a policy to meet your needs and fit in your budget. Once a policy is in place, you can revisit it, especially during different life events, to make certain the coverage is still appropriate. Knowing you have provided for your loved ones will give you peace of mind so you can enjoy doing the things you’ve always wanted to do.

It has been three years since ALAMCO Wood Products Inc.

was sold to new owner Tom Bell and began operating under the name ALAMCO Wood Products LLC. In those two years the original goals of Alamco have remained the same; quality, safety, and environmentally friendly products. We have also remained a community friendly employer and have given back in even larger amounts to the people of Albert Lea thru donations to the United Way and other community sponsored organizations. ALAMCO Wood Products LLC, has continued to invest in the facilities here in Albert Lea. We have installed a complete laminating plant into the building that has been built under JobZ from the Japanese Post and Beam manufacturer Master Fit. We purchased the assets of a West Coast manufacturer and moved them to Albert Lea. Our maintenance crew has rebuilt and installed the equipment and it is now operational. It will be primarily a laminated wood power pole manufacturing facility. This facility will have a crew of 15 to 20 people and will increase the production in Albert Lea by 50 percent. We have plans for further additions to the facility and plan on being an Albert Lea manufacturing resource for years to come. Supplement to The Freeborn Co. Shopper/Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012/Page 15

Changing the Way We Age Weston Hulst,Thornecrest Retirement Center

The search for the fountain of youth by Juan Ponce de León in the 16th century is a story that many people have heard. The fountain of youth is a spring, and when water is drank from this spring, it’s said to restore a person’s youth. The only problem is that the fountain of youth is only a story, there’s no such thing. Or is there? Now I don’t claim to have found the fountain of youth, but what I do claim is to increase a senior’s strength by 50%, increase balance by over 100%, increase flexibility by 70% and increase endurance by 40%. No fountain of youth required, just 30 minutes, 3 or more times a week.

future similar loads will be less stressful. Likewise, it can and will adapt to having no demands places upon it, becoming increasingly weaker and less capable.

There is no body that is too old to increase strength. Even 100+ year olds are seeing positive results through simple strength training. It is more important to stay active and exercise as we age so we can stand the test of time. We have all heard the saying, “if you don’t use it, you will lose it.” How true! If you don’t use your muscles, you will lose your strength as you age. There are 1440 minutes in a day; I hope you can spare 30 of those minutes investing in your body. Let’s change the way we age.

Strength training, or resistance training, is extremely important as we age. Between the ages of 50 and 70, muscle strength has been shown to decline as much as 30%, with even larger decreases after the age of 80. As we age, it’s natural for our muscle fibers to decrease in size and numbers; however, we can slow this process down and even reverse it through strength training. The human body is a miracle of adaptation, capable of altering itself to loads placed upon it in such a way that
