FESTIVAL GUIDE
Plan your weekend in Hull, the next UK City of Culture
5-7 september
The origins of the festival Freedom Festival celebrates, through artistic and cultural expression, Hull’s independent spirit and historic contribution to the cause of freedom. The concept of freedom is deeply woven into the identity of our city. Over 200 years ago, Hull-born MP William Wilberforce championed the abolition of the slave trade and Freedom Festival is a legacy of the bicentenary commemorations. Centuries on from Wilberforce, Hull still has an ‘end-of-the-line sense of freedom’ – a different resonance in the city that we embrace throughout our programme. For 2014’s event, we will commemorate and celebrate Nelson Mandela: a freedom activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner and South Africa’s first democraticallyelected President. His greatest moments and achievements will be reimagined as installations of light, colour and sound in The Long Walk to Freedom Light Trail taking place from dusk until 11pm on the Friday and Saturday evenings in Hull’s Old Town. On Sunday the streets will be filled with people as they gather to celebrate A World of Colour. This community procession will see local participants transform the streets with creative carnival atmosphere, inspired by Mandela’s dream of a ‘rainbow nation’. We hope you can join us over the festival weekend from 5-7 September 2014. Experience firsthand why freedom remains so important to Hull’s identity as we journey towards our time as UK City of Culture 2017.
