FESTIVAL GUIDE

Plan your weekend in Hull, the next UK City of Culture

5-7 september

The origins of the festival Freedom Festival celebrates, through artistic and cultural expression, Hull’s independent spirit and historic contribution to the cause of freedom. The concept of freedom is deeply woven into the identity of our city. Over 200 years ago, Hull-born MP William Wilberforce championed the abolition of the slave trade and Freedom Festival is a legacy of the bicentenary commemorations. Centuries on from Wilberforce, Hull still has an ‘end-of-the-line sense of freedom’ – a different resonance in the city that we embrace throughout our programme. For 2014’s event, we will commemorate and celebrate Nelson Mandela: a freedom activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner and South Africa’s first democraticallyelected President. His greatest moments and achievements will be reimagined as installations of light, colour and sound in The Long Walk to Freedom Light Trail taking place from dusk until 11pm on the Friday and Saturday evenings in Hull’s Old Town. On Sunday the streets will be filled with people as they gather to celebrate A World of Colour. This community procession will see local participants transform the streets with creative carnival atmosphere, inspired by Mandela’s dream of a ‘rainbow nation’. We hope you can join us over the festival weekend from 5-7 September 2014. Experience firsthand why freedom remains so important to Hull’s identity as we journey towards our time as UK City of Culture 2017.

This bird installation from emerging artists Jodie and Greg RussianRed creates a dreamlike setting of ethereal lights and wondrous sonic landscapes, evoking the free flight of the bird.

A 360˚ projection globe that invites audience to have their picture mapped into live animations that swarm around the globe alongside movies, audio, graphic effects, pictures, text and even Tweets.

Whispered Words is an inventive, intergenerational celebration of our fight for freedom and justice. This installation uses innovative technology to turn a street facing window display into an immersive sound experience for the audience. Supported by Jack Brignall Trust Award.

This light installation uses shadowplay and illuminated figures to create an interactive, dynamic interplay of light, shadows and sound.

To the Better Place we Dream Of by Debi Keable The Fight for Freedom by Quentin Budworth A short animated film, created by pupils at several primary schools in Hull, and brought to Freedom Festival by local filmmaker Quentin Budworth.

Thought provoking and ethereal, this contemporary screen print installation uses illusion, beauty and the audience’s projected imagination to transform backlit acrylic sheets into a virtual window to a dream world.

G H I Vision of Freedom by Home Sweet Home This live interactive piece explore the artists’ visions of freedom with audio-visual mapping, video projection, light and sound.

The Long Walk to Freedom will be the focal point of Freedom Festival’s Friday and Saturday night, creating a stunning light trail through Hull’s Old Town leading into the Fruit Market.

Audio-visual installations, dynamic interplays of light and shadow and a 75 metre mural created by 10 graffiti artists will all feature as the trail winds its way down High Street.

Nine local art groups have been commissioned to create new installations, inspired by Nelson Mandela, with each artwork bringing its own individual magic and marking parallels between Mandela’s work in fighting for equality and the origins of Freedom Festival.

The trail is open from dusk until 11pm on both Friday and Saturday night, with performances of Halo by Flame Oz! taking place at various points along the route. Please share your photos of the Light Trail on both Twitter and Instagram using the hastags #FreedomHull and #LWTF
