Part-Time Freelancing Starting a career in freelancing often equals pursuing one’s dream. However, the beginning is almost always extremely difficult and an all-in scenario often fails. This is why you might want to consider part-time freelancing, at least at first. Part-time freelancers are professionals who want to pursue an independent career, but are not willing to fully commit to the risk that it represents without having an escape route. This article features both the benefits and the negative sides of part-time freelancing. Š freelancermap.com

1) Financial stability The first aspect is an economical one. At the beginning of your freelancing career you are likely to have none to very little profit. This is where a secure and stable office job will have your back. If you manage to have 2 days in the week which you can dedicate to your freelancing career and building it up professionally and responsibly without being pressed for money, you will do a much better job than if you are under constant stress.

2) The time aspect When the subject of part-time freelancing is concerned, the time you have can have both a negative and a positive impact on your work. On the plus side, you have months to try out different business strategies, develop a plan and build up your online presence and personal network. On the other hand, you will not be able to commit all your free time to your new career path, meaning that things will start out even slower than usual. A lot of commitment and motivation will be required to work on something for months before actually getting to reap the benefits.

3) Conflicts of interest and tax regulations If your regular job is in the same field as your freelancing business, you will have to be extremely careful. First of all, avoiding a conflict of interests might prove tricky, so make sure to let both your employer and potential clients know of the other things you’re working on, so everyone is aware of what they’re getting into. Your work on the side can also have consequences on the way you do your taxes as well, so make sure to either do a lot of research by yourself or consult a professional accountant as to how that might change.

4) Having the opportunity to change, adapt or even quit Even though most freelancers will do the sensible thing and start out with a financial safety net which protects them for the first three to four months, having a regular job can be even safer. Maybe you find out that the services you had in mind are not that sought after. Or you realize that the focus of your business should be on an international rather than on a regional level. Heck, freelancing might even not be for you after all. As a part-time freelancer you will have the chance to rationally consider all these possibilities and act upon them.

5) Diversity Having a variety in your working habits is a big advantage of part-time freelancing. Firstly, you won’t miss out on all the social bonuses which an office full of like-minded individual offers. Secondly, both your jobs will be less mundane. A constant back and forth between being your own boss and having the time to lay back and make less decisions will lead to a level of variety which is otherwise very difficult to reach. However, it can be very stressful. Don’t forget that you are, after all, just a human and need at least a day off in the week. Don’t turn your back on family, friends and free time activities, they will boost your creativity and fuel you with energy and motivation! © freelancermap.com
