Ever had writer's block? Every writer has experienced it. Whether we call it procrastination, lack of concentration or motivation, or we simply run out of ideas to put on paper, there are times when we sit in front of that empty page and can’t figure out what to write next. This issue is a natural part of the writing process and any freelance writer is bound to face it sooner or later. We’ve comprised a list of four tips which will help you overcome the so-called writer’s block.

1) Motivation comes with action Many people who are into writing, like me, do just fine once they get started with their work. Once you get it rolling, writing just seems to come naturally. The problem lies in actually getting it started. What helps me, personally, is to get a rough outline of what I'm going to be writing. Whether it is an article or a blog post, writing your title and/or subtitles seems to do wonders for your brain. It makes you think about what you’re going to write and how you’re going to do it, which in turn motivates you to turn your ideas into reality. Waiting around for motivation to come will rarely do it, so rally yourself by simply getting started.

2) Perfectionism only slows you down While writing, finding the perfect way to synthesize your thoughts is absolutely not going to always happen from the first time. Getting stuck on a certain word or sentence can be quite terrifying and counterproductive, since it just ruins your pace and slows you down. A first draft is just that, a concept that you have to create in order to then be able to make it perfect. Put down your thoughts on that empty page first and worry about perfect sentence structure and that right word on the tip of your tongue later.

3) Read, read, and then read some more Chances are, you got into writing because you really like reading. When work becomes a daily necessity and free time remains a luxury, it is easy to forget about the hobby which got you where you are today. I think any successful writer has to read. A lot. On the one hand, reading can provide you with invaluable insights about topics you know little about. On the other, it is a neverending source of inspiration. There are just so many great things to read out there. Foregoing the daily TV session or 20-minute series in favor of reading a good book or an interesting article will go a long way towards keeping your writing fresh and realistic.

4) Social activities and staying fit Writing is often depicted as a lonely venture. Well, there is some truth to the fact. Your working days often come down to sitting in front of your computer and tipping away. However, social interaction doesn’t have to suffer because of that. In fact, it will help prevent the writer’s block. Interacting with interesting people, especially colleagues who write, is going to help out a lot. They probably have the same interests, problems, and find joy in the same things as you do, so joining a group of fellow writers is definitely worth considering. Spending time with family and friends can lead to the most unexpected of ideas as well and most of them you would never have had without the conversations.

Keep healthy! Keeping healthy is obviously quite crucial for staying on top of your work as well. Mental and physical health is inherently connected with happiness and motivation. As freelancers you have the freedom and flexibility to determine your own schedule, so stay healthy and keep on writing!
