Vacation as freelancer? Impossible? Taking a holiday can be extremely difficult for the self-employed. Being your own boss, marketing department, and human resources manager all at once can stress you out. It will often lead you to believe that your business will suffer dramatically as soon as you turn your back on it. But any freelancer has to realize just how important a vacation can really be. Most freelancers know that, but still struggle with the idea of taking a week off, since they worry about their business way too much, even during a vacation. This article aims to provide you with some useful tips on enjoying your well-deserved time off without stressing out about your work.

1) Plan ahead of time First off, make sure to work out when your vacation is going to happen and how long exactly it will be. You should have that figured out at least one to two months before the actual date. That way, you will be able to only take contracts which you can finish up in a timely fashion before your vacation starts. That way, you won’t feel pressured into giving up your free time and postponing your much-needed break forever.

2) Let your clients know you’re away The people you work with take vacations as well and are fully aware that everyone needs a break now and again. That means that they should understand where you’re coming from most of the time when making the decision to take some time off. But you should definitely let them know what you’re planning two or three weeks beforehand. Tell them how long your vacation is going to be. Make it clear, politely, but firmly that you won’t be able to get any work done during that time. Set up your email so that it automatically responds to anything with an away from work notice. Following this simple advice will spare you a lot of frustrated and potentially lost clients.

3) Work only if you really have to Let’s face it – most freelancers feel a very strong connection to their work. A vacation can quickly turn into a torture if you spend your whole day worrying about your business and frantically checking your emails around the clock. If you know that you simply cannot turn your back on your work, you should at least set some boundaries. Set aside an hour of your day for checking your emails – but stick to that amount of time. Knowing you’re able to respond to any urgent matter without ruining your holiday should help soothe your nerves.

4) Remember the importance of a break Finally, and most importantly, don’t forget all the benefits of taking some time off. Consider your vacation an inspiration. Take a breath, look around you and just relax – it will do wonders for your body and your mind. Meet new people and see new places, the most brilliant ideas could come when you least expect them. Looking at a problem from a different angle is hard to do when all you do is ponder about it twelve hours a day in your office. Enjoying your vacation with your friends and family will charge up your batteries like nothing else. So try to forget about your work for a week and go somewhere with someone who makes you happy. When you come back, you will be able to charge at your work more motivated than ever.
