Twitter Twitter is a very intriguing social network. It has over 270 million, steady growth, lots of improvements year after year and has recently made its first appearance on the stock market. However, a lot of people simply don’t know how or why they can use it. It is simple, yet deceiving. Freelancers have a lot to gain from utilizing Twitter properly, but many are uncertain about how that is supposed to happen. To help you gain a better understanding of Twitter and boost your career through it, we wrote down four simple tips on using it to your benefit as a freelancer. Š freelancermap.com

1) Have an interesting and informative profile Like all other social networks, Twitter is all about how you sell yourself. Having a well-written and informative user bio is the first and most crucial step to putting your name out there when it comes to Twitter. Having a blank bio tells everybody who clicks on your profile to learn more about you and your business that you somehow lack interest or motivation. A meaningless quotation or some vague sentence does pretty much the same, so avoid that.

1) Have an interesting and informative profile What your bio should be is a short description about yourself, the work you do, maybe some current project and definitely a link to your site/blog/Facebook. That way, any employer who checks your profile out will quickly get a good understanding of whether or not your are someone he or she might be interested in, as well as giving them the information to follow up their research by using other channels.

2) Follow the right people Building up a good network is the most important thing on Twitter. After all, if you only get posts that don’t mean much to you and have no one to share your thoughts with, you won’t be doing anything other than wasting your time.

2) Follow the right people First comes first, you have to find the right people to follow. Remember that this is your professional business page and anyone you follow should be connected with what you do in order to help you expand your horizons. Look for professionals who do what you do and heed their advice or think about their troubles. Find potential employers who you would like to be working with and follow their feeds, in order to learn about what they are looking for. Congratulations, you now have a quality source of information.

3) Interact with your followers in a quality fashion As you find people to follow, some will follow you back. Now is your turn to provide good, captivating content. Things not to tweet out include how you are desperate for a new job, horror stories from previous or current employers and really personal stuff that only your closest friends care about. Things that you absolutely should tweet out are informative, helpful and interesting – innovative ways in which you tackled your latest project, important news concerning your field of work, professional advice and so on.

4) Don’t forget about hashtags, direct messages, search etc. Twitter is a very powerful tool and utilizing it means using hashtags and learning how to search for things on the social network. People often forget that there are direct messages on Twitter as well, but it is an option to consider if you want to talk about something interesting that someone else has shared there. To completely reveal Twitter’s potential you need to use it in combination with both your online and offline presence.

4) Don’t forget about hashtags, direct messages, search etc. Make sure that anyone who sees what you tweet out can easily find your website, blog, examples of your work and any other profiles you might have in networks such as Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn or others. It goes the other way around as well – even if people don’t use Twitter, you can show them all the tweets that they are missing out on, for example by including a Twitter feed on your website.

There’s no perfect recipe for using Twitter, everybody has to find what works best for their particular personality, business and network. But once you do, it can become an essential part of your online marketing. © freelancermap.com
