note: Frédéric-Louis Durand (1874-1964) was the son of the famed Parisian ébéniste Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand (1830-1920). The elder Durand established the Maison Durand in 1870 at 12, rue de la Cerisaie in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Paris’ traditional furniture and craft district. By 1889, the Durand workshop had developed a very respectable reputation as builders of highquality furniture in the style of the Ancien Régime, winning a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris that same year. In 1890, Gervais’ son, Frédéric-Louis, joined the firm and the named changed to Durand et Fils. Further success followed and in 1900 the firm was relocated to the prominent Hôtel de Sully at 62, Rue Saint-Antoine in the nearby aristocratic Marais neighborhood. After his father’s death in 1920, FrédéricLouis became head of the business and his son, Pierre Durand, joined the workshop. The name was again changed to F. Durand et Fils at that time. F. Durand et Fils continued operation until Frédéric-Louis’ own death in 1934. The present example bears the distinctive F. DURAND. FILS stamp used between 1920 and 1934.

decimated, the French Commander Saint-Georges surrendered his sword to the British Admiral George Anson. The ship was repaired and re-commissioned by the British Royal Navy as the HMS Invincible, serving until she foundered on a sandbar in 1758.
provenance: The Collection of Malcolm B. Stone. Thence by descent in the family. note: L’Invincible was a French naval ship-of-the-line commissioned in 1741, designed by Pierre Morineau and built at the French military port of Toulon. The result of an especially fruitful period of French naval engineering, L’Invincible and her sister ship, Le Magnanime, were among the largest ships ever built at the time, with a deck length of over 171 feet, following in the tradition of the groundbreaking Terrible, designed and launched at Toulon two years prior. The advances in size, construction, and gun power of these French ships far exceeded those of the British Royal Navy in the first half of the 18th century; as a consequence, their capture rather than destruction was extremely desirable in maritime conflicts. During the War of Austrian Succession, L’Invincible was herself captured at the First Battle of Cape Finisterre on May 14, 1747 while accompanying a merchant marine convoy. After a valiant eight-hour fight against sixteen British ships, completely de-masted and with her crew

During the Franco-British Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815), French prisoners-of-war were held captive in camps along the English coast for the duration of the unusually long conflict. In order to keep themselves occupied, these prisoners-often naval engineers or craftsmen themselvesdeveloped a camp trade in hand-constructed crafts, objets d’art, and, most notably, models of famous Franco-British war ships, as in the case of the offered lot. Beginning with found materials such as bone and wood scraps, the models became increasingly sophisticated as British demand for such curiosities grew. These prisoner-of-war built ships are therefore considered among the very best and most detailed of any from this era, due to the length of the wars and the time these craftsmen spent imprisoned, honing their skills and competing for patronage from the local villages, who also benefitted as conduits of these objects to markets across Britain. The present lot is a particularly fine example of the realism and complexity exhibited in these models, equipped with every cannon, rope, balustrade and fitting of a real ship. It almost certainly dates to after 1800, by which time the prison camp trades were well established. This particular model is from the collection of notable ship model collector Malcolm B. Stone (1881-1965). Upon his death, most of this collection was donated to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. This prized model was not donated at that time, and instead kept in the family where it has remained to the present day. For models of similar origin and form, see Bonham’s London, October 7, 2015, Lot 11 and Christie’s London, November 1, 2001, Lot 193.

204 AN EMPIRE GILT AND PATINATED BRONZE FIGURAL MANTEL CLOCK pierre-philippe thomire (french, 1751-1843), circa 1808 Depicting Antigone promising loyalty to Oedipus, the stele shaped case modeled as the tomb of King Laïus housing an enamel dial marked “Revel/Rue de la Loi” and later clock movement; the verde antico marble plinth mounted with an extremely fine relief frieze depicting Oedipus’ murder of Laïus; the whole raised on an acanthus-cast bronze base above gryphon feet. H: 26, W: 22, D: 11 1/4 in.
provenance: The Collection of Gianni Versace, Sotheby’s New York, April 5-7, 2001.
$7,000-9,000
provenance: Private collection, California. note: Oedipus was the mythical Greek king of Thebes, condemned to a prophecy that he would murder his father, King Laïus, and marry his mother, Queen Jocasta. Despite his family’s efforts to avoid this fate, eventually the prophecy is fulfilled as Oedipus unknowingly slays Laïus and wins the hand of his widow, Jocasta. Oedipus has four children with his mother Jocasta, including Antigone, and rules Thebes for many years before learning the tragic truth. This clock depicts the moment when Antigone discovers that her father is also her brother, and a murderer. However, because she understands that Oedipus did this unwittingly, Antigone chooses to remain loyal to him. Thomire has modeled the figures as Antigone swearing an oath of loyalty to her father at the foot of Laïus’ grave, above an exceptional relief frieze depicting the chariot battle in which Oedipus killed Laïus. In Sophocles’ telling of this myth, Oedipus blinds himself as punishment for his sins, and Antigone serves as his guide through the wilderness for the rest of his life.

Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) was one of the most prominent French sculptors and bronziers of the 18th and 19th centuries. Established as an important sculptor during the reign of Louis XVI, in 1804 Thomire became a marchand-mercier, a special entrepreneurial classification for independent “taste makers”: designers of fine objets d’art, furnishings, and interiors. In this role he provided many designs and works for Napoleon, who appointed him Engraver to the Emperor in 1809 and Furniture Supplier to their Majesties in 1811. Thomire’s neoclassical imagery came to be a defining aesthetic of the First Empire, drawing specifically on Classical mythology, as exemplified in the present lot. This clock demonstrates his capability with modeling sculpture in the round as well as en relief, and also his creativity and facility with designing unique forms for his objets d’art.
This model was designed during the First Empire by Thomire and executed by Thomire et Cie with works by the important horologist Louis Moinet l’Aîné, with whom Thomire regularly worked. A similar model to the offered example, with a marble rather than gilt-bronze base, is in the collection of the Musée du Louvre and dated circa 1820. An identical example, with the same gilt-bronze acanthus-cast base, is held in the Royal Palace Amsterdam, acquired by Louis Napoleon, King of Holland from 1806 to 1810, as part of his 1808 renovation of the Royal Palace in the Empire style. It is likely, therefore, that the present lot is one of the earliest of this model produced, circa 1808.

217 EGVENY ALEKSANDROVICH LANSERE (RUSSIAN, 1848-1886) SOKOLINAYA OHOTA, MODELED 1872 Bronze with dark green patina, depicting a falconer on horseback; signed in cast in Cyrillic and with Nikolai F. Shtange foundry mark. H: 18 1/2, W: 14, D: 7 1/2 in.
In 1861 he moved to Saint Petersburg with his family, where he completed his education. In 1867 and 1876 he traveled to Paris, where he studied sculpture as well as the methodology of bronze casting. Following his first stint in Paris he returned to Russia in 1868. In 1872, the year the present lot was originally modeled, he received the title of Artist First Class from the Imperial Academy of Arts. In 1874 he was recognized as an Academician.
provenance: Property of a Chester County, Pennsylvania Institution. note: Evgeny Aleksandrovich Lansere (also called Lanceray) was born August 24, 1848, in Morshansk and died April 4, 1886, at Neskuchne, Kharkiv Province, Ukraine. As a sculptor, Lansere was known primarily for his Russian and ethnographic genre studies, as well as animalier. The son of state councilor Ludwig Paul (Aleksandr) Lansere (1815-1869), Lansere grew up in a privileged noble family, entering the local gymnasium where he was noted at a young age to be a talented renderer of horses.
From 1879 he was also a member of the Moscow Society of Fine Arts. Lansere began his public career executing private commissions as unique casts, but the popularity of his work convinced Lansere to sell the license to cast his works to the Chopin, Sazikov, and Grachev foundries. These makers began replicating his work and creating the large numbers of casts we see today of varying quality. This bronze is stamped with the Nikolai F. Shtange foundry mark. This foundry was opened in St. Petersburg in 1845, and by the end of the next decade it had become a large foundry well known for its decorative bronze items. They obtained the copyrights for over a dozen of Lansere’s models in 1893; the present model was therefore produced after this date, likely between 1893-1917.

PETERMANN/ST. GILLES - BRUXELLES”. H: 29 1/2 in. note: Edward Deckers (1873-1956) was one of Belgium’s most prominent sculptors of the early 20th century, though today his work is relatively obscure. During his long career he experienced both critical and popular success, culminating in his appointment as the inaugural professor of life modelling at the Académie Royale in Brussels. One of Deckers’ most familiar sculptures, Le Charmeur made its first appearance to much acclaim at the 1903 Brussels Salon, and that cast was promptly acquired by the Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. The same cast was later exhibited at the International Exhibition in Liège, Belgium in 1905 and at the Exhibition of L’Art Contemporain in Antwerp in 1908.The present example, just like the famous original, was cast by Jacques Petermann at the Fonderie Nationale des Bronzes (in operation 1870-1967) in Saint-Gilles, Brussels, a district of particular cultural exuberance during the fin-de-siècle, perhaps best known for its tremendous Art Nouveau architecture by Victor Horta and his contemporaries. For another example of this model, see Sotheby’s London, April 21, 2004, Lot 114.

Payment shall be by cash, certified check or similar bank draft, or any other method approved by Freeman’s. Checks will not be deemed to constitute payment until cleared. Any exceptions must be made upon Freeman’s written approval of credit prior to sale. In certain instances, the Consignor may pay less than the standard commission rate where Freeman’s or its representative is a successful bidder on behalf of the Consignor. Where the Consignor is indebted to Freeman’s, Freeman’s may have an interest in the offered lots and the proceeds therefrom, other than the broker’s Commissions, and all sales are subject to any such interest. 11 No “buy” bids shall be accepted at any time for any purpose. 12 Any pre-sale bids must be submitted in writing to Freeman’s prior to commencement of the offer of the first lot of any sale. Shipping and Packing Responsibility for packing, shipping and insurance shall be exclusively that of the purchaser. Upon request, Freeman’s will provide the purchaser with names of professional packers and shippers known to us. Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.
In writing Bid forms are available in the sale room and at the back of the catalogue. These should be submitted in person, by mail or by fax no later than one hour prior to the scheduled start of the sale. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to the limit.
