O
ver 100 miles below the Earth’s surface, under powerful forces of
pressure and extreme heat, one of nature’s strongest materials is created. Diamonds, made of just carbon, contain rigid crystal structures that are so sturdy it is nearly impossible for any other elements to break through. On the rare occasion that an impurity does enter a diamond’s chemical composition, the results are remarkable. Because of this infrequency, naturally colored diamonds are among the most rare and valuable gems in the industry. Yellow and brown, the most common colors found, are the effect of trace element nitrogen. A much rarer occurance is the elusive blue diamond, caused by trace element boron. The scarcity of colored diamonds will guarantee their everlasting desire and value.

nearthed in the Andean region of Columbia, then fashioned in the renowned colored gem cutting center Jaipur, India, the world’s most illustrious emeralds are given life. For centuries, skilled
craftsman from the Pink City adorned India’s Maharaja with carefully carved emeralds, a symbol of power and balance. Drawn to the exotic nature of The East and the impeccable artistry of Indian gem cutters, it is no surprise Louis Cartier traveled to India in search of these exquisitely crafted gems. As a departure from the the geometric trend of the Art Deco period, these carved gems evoke a softer, more natural aesthetic. Early twentieth century European art embodied this dichotomy of restraint and expression, a duality not only obvious in Cartier’s body of work, but also indicative of the climate between the world wars.

Endangered Species Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory. Such materials may require specific licenses, certificates, or CITES documentation for import, export, moving between states in the U.S., or resale. Obtaining these documents may require scientific, laboratory or other expert analysis, in order to establish which species or genus the material came from. Freeman’s is unable to provide this information, and the obligation is on the purchaser of a lot containing any of these materials to ensure that they are able to obtain all the necessary or required documents should they need to, prior to bidding on the lot. If proper documentation or licenses etc. cannot be obtained for a purchased lot, the purchaser will still be required to make an on time payment for the lot as per our standard terms and conditions. Freeman’s cataloguing of the lots marked with this symbol * represents the best of our opinion, and the absence of this symbol from any lot description does not form a warranty that the lot will be free from any licensing or certification restrictions.
