Née d’une passion partagée pour le ski alpin et l’artisanat français, la marque de skis d’exception Marcel Livet est une histoire d’hommes, d’héritage et d’amour de la montagne. Nous nous sommes rendus au showroom de la marque, installé à Annecy, à la rencontre de Victor Edouard, son fondateur. Cet ancien moniteur de ski et ingénieur des Arts & Métiers commence sa vie professionnelle dans la haute horlogerie en Suisse, puis décide en 2018 de se lancer dans la fabrication de skis en bois haut de gamme traditionnels. Le nom de sa société s’est alors imposé comme une évidence. « Mon arrière grand-père, Marcel Livet, membre du Club Alpin Français a œuvré dans la préparation de la 3ème expédition française en Himalaya de 1951 à la conquête de la Nanda Devi. Il m’a transmis son amour de la montagne, du ski et de l’alpinisme, il était légitime de lui rendre hommage au travers de ce projet professionnel. »

Des skis d’exception

Un héritage historique auquel Victor Edouard est profondément attaché. « Le nom de mon arrièregrand-père portait parfaitement toutes les valeurs et l’émotion que véhiculait le projet. » Placage de frêne, de citronnier ou de noyer, travail de marqueterie, mise en forme des noyaux, assemblage avec des matériaux composites, moulage des composants et finitions..., Victor Edouard fait le choix de l’excellence jusque dans la fabrication des skis confiée à des artisans locaux à Annecy et en Isère. Les skis sont également personnalisables par l’inscription d’un nom, d’initiales ou d’un texte ou par l’ajout d’un médaillon en acier inoxydable poli puis gravé qui les rendent uniques. « A ces savoir-faire manuels traditionnels s’ajoutent les performances technologiques les plus modernes. Nous recherchons toujours davantage de technicité et nos modèles évoluent sans cesse. Nous avons complété la gamme ces dernières années avec des skis de différentes largeurs, comme le ski Gustave, le dernier né chez Marcel Livet, un ski freeride ou encore le ski Raymond, une version purement piste, puissant et accrocheur pour skier sportivement à grande vitesse tout en conservant un look vintage et élégant ! » En octobre 2021 Marcel Livet lançait également sa première collection de moufles en cuir fabriquée dans un atelier français historique basé au cœur du massif des Pyrénées. « Je me suis inspiré des moufles portées par les alpinistes lors de leur expédition en Himalaya en 1951. » Cette collection demeure fidèle à l’ADN de la marque de skis : le style vintage et l’utilisation de matériaux nobles. Un sans faute.

A history of heritage

Inspired by a dual passion for downhill skiing and French artisanry, the exceptional ski brand Marcel Livet is a story of people, heritage, and love for the mountains. We visited the brand’s showroom in Annecy to meet the founder, Victor Edouard. This former ski instructor and engineer, who graduated from the prestigious Arts & Métiers school, began his career in high watchmaking in Switzerland before launching a business producing luxury, traditional wooden skis in 2018. The name of the company was a natural choice. “My greatgrandfather, Marcel Livet, was a member of the Club Alpin Français. He helped prepare the third French expedition to the Himalayas to scale Nanda Devi in 1951. He passed down his love of the peaks, skiing, and mountaineering to me, so I wanted to pay tribute to him through this professional venture.”

Exceptional skis

Victor Edouard is profoundly attached to this historic heritage. “My great-grandfather’s name perfectly upheld the values and emotion driving this project.” Whether applying veneers in ash, satinwood or walnut, inlaying, developing the cores, creating composite materials, or casting the components and finishing touches, Victor Edouard has decided to focus on excellence right down to who manufacturers the skis – a number of local artisans in Annecy and Isère. The skis can also be customised with a name, initials, text, or the addition of a polished, engraved, stainlesssteel medallion – countless ways to make them unique. “These traditional, manual skillsets are joined by cutting-edge technological performance. We are always pursuing a greater level of technical prowess and our models are constantly evolving. We have developed the range in recent years with skis of different widths such as the Gustave ski (the latest Marcel Livet creation), a freeride ski, and the Raymond ski, a powerful, high-traction, piste-only version for athletic, high-speed skiing while preserving a vintage, elegant style!” In October 2021, Marcel Livet also launched its first collection of leather mittens made in a historic French workshop based in the heart of the Pyrenees Mountains. “I drew inspiration from the mittens worn by mountaineers during their Himalayan expedition in 1951.” This collection has remained loyal to the ski brand’s identity, championing a vintage style and the finest materials. An all-round flawless performance.
