Who we are and what we do Children’s Hospices UK is the national charity that gives voice and support to all children’s hospice services. • We make the lives of children and young people who are not expected to reach adulthood, and their families, better by ensuring they receive the best possible care • We campaign and lobby on behalf of children’s hospice services, making sure their voice is heard by the Government • We fundraise for children’s hospices, so they can continue to improve their services to life-limited and life-threatened children, young people and their families • We raise awareness of the services offered by children’s hospices in the UK

Message from the Chair The role of Children’s Hospices UK has never been more important and more relevant than it is today. It has been an extraordinary year which has created a number of very significant opportunities for us and the 44 children’s hospice services we represent. The publication of ‘Better Care: Better Lives’, the Government’s first strategy for children’s palliative care in England, marks the start of a new and promising era. Published in February 2008, the report promises a step change that could make a significant difference to thousands of children and young people who are not expected to reach adulthood, and their families. Children’s palliative care has never been so high up the Government’s agenda but we will have to fight to keep it there in the face of a much more challenging financial environment. As a result, our role as the national voice for children’s hospice services has never been more crucial. It is vital that we continue to work with our partners and members to ensure that the aspirations set out in the strategy are delivered. In particular, we must ensure that the strategy leads to more local spending on children’s hospices and other children’s palliative care services. Moving forward, we will develop our priorities and resources to ensure that they reflect the needs of children’s hospice services at this critical time in the evolution of children’s palliative care. By working together well, we will be stronger and more effective in everything we do, not just in England, but across all four countries. Together we will make a real difference to the thousands of children, young people and families who need our help and support.
David King, Chair of Children’s Hospices UK

Raising awareness
Fundraising for children’s hospices
Children’s Hospices UK plays a crucial role in ensuring that the public understands the vital work of children’s hospice services.
Children’s Hospices UK’s national fundraising scheme enables national companies and organisations to raise funds for their local children’s hospice.
• Our communications team generated, on average, a national media mention every week. Highlights included coverage on ITV’s This Morning, the ITV lunchtime news, Channel 5 and substantial features in the Mail on Sunday YOU magazine
• In 2007/08 we distributed £668,090 to children’s hospice services throughout the UK
• The Children’s Hospices UK website was relaunched to provide improved information and services to our members, the general public and other stakeholders • We worked closely with ITV to develop a special ‘Challenge Anneka’ programme which was seen by millions. The challenge was for children and young people using children’s hospices, and celebrities, to make a CD together. Sales of the ‘Over the Rainbow’ CD exceeded 100,000 and the £250,000 royalties were distributed to children’s hospice services
• We formed successful fundraising partnerships with Team England Footballers Charity, Fortnum & Mason, Autoglass, SThree, the Round Table and the Boys’ Brigade • We were awarded Fundraising Team of the Year 2007 by the Charity Times • We expanded our fundraising team to develop a programme of national events which will raise additional funds for all our members
“ Fortnum & Mason is proud to be working in partnership with Children’s Hospices UK. It gives us a range of opportunities to show our support and 9 enables our staff and customers to get involved. Most importantly it’s good to know we can make a real difference to children and families.” Cathy O’Neill, HR & Customer Service Director, Fortnum & Mason
