• If you would like to make the quilt exactly as shown, refer to the Quilt Layout diagram (page 6) to pair Fabric A, C, J, and K triangles with the other fabric triangles shown, making sure to keep the Fabric C stripes oriented as in the photographed quilt, before following the steps below. A design wall or large flat surface will help. Label cut pieces with their placement by row and column to keep yourself organized. If creating your own block placement, photograph the final arrangement for reference.

1. Cut all the 9" squares in half diagonally from corner to corner. If you want to keep the Fabric C stripes oriented vertically as in the finished quilt top, make sure to refer to the Fabric C Cutting Diagram for correct stripe orientation when cutting squares into triangles. Fabric C Cutting Diagram Fabric C Cutting Diagram stripe direction stripe direction Cut triangles.15 Cut triangles.5

• Use the swatches in the Fabric Requirements to separate your fabrics before cutting and keep the cut Fabric A, C, J, and K pieces separated for easier block construction. If you want to keep the Fabric C stripes oriented vertically in the finished quilt top, make sure to refer to the Fabric C Cutting Diagram for correct stripe orientation when cutting squares into triangles. Fabrics A and C, cut from each: (3) 9" x WOF, subcut (10*) 9" squares

• Each HST block is made up of 2 HSTs. All the outer blocks use either Fabric A or C for the triangle along the outer edge of the block. All the inner blocks use 1 triangle from either Fabric J or K in each block. Make a test block to check your seam allowance with scrap fabrics cut as below to be certain your blocks can be trimmed down to the correct size (81⁄2" square including seam allowance). Adjust your cut size and or seam allowance as needed.

• All seam allowances are 1⁄4" and pieces are sewn right sides together. Press after each seam in the direction indicated.

• Press fabrics before cutting, using spray starch or starch alternative if desired. Cut pieces will have bias edges, so handle gently until sewn to avoid stretching or distorting.

Optional: • Spray starch or starch alternative

Instructions Notes:

2. To make the quilt exactly as shown, first make 2 pairs each of Fabrics A and K triangles and Fabrics C and K triangles (4 pairs total), referring to Figure 1 to choose the correct C triangle to maintain the stripe placement. Pair each remaining Fabric A, C, J, and K triangle with one triangle from Fabrics B, D-I, or L-R, referring to the Quilt Layout diagram or the HST Blocks table (shown right) for specific fabric placement. 5. Arrange the HST Blocks in a 10 x 10 layout. If making the quilt exactly as shown, place the Fabric A and C blocks along the outer edges and the A/J and B/K blocks in the very center (rows 5 and 6), noting the orientation of the stripes. Rotate every other block in the first row, then continue rotating blocks in each successive row.

12. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the binding to the top of the quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.

9. Repeat step 8 to measure horizontally, trim, and add the remaining 2 Fabric S LOF strips to the top and bottom of the quilt to complete the quilt top. Finishing 10. Sew together the 21⁄2" Fabric S WOF binding strips end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.

7. Pinning at seam intersections, sew the rows together to complete the quilt center. Press all the seams in the same direction.

4. Trim to square up to 81 2" x 81⁄2", centering the diagonal seam in the corner. Tips: Compare pressed blocks to find the smallest block, then trim all blocks to match the smallest block. A square rotary cutting ruler the exact trim size and a rotating cutting mat make this step easier but are not necessary.

Measure the Quilt Center width and height before cutting and adding borders and adjust border measurements if necessary to match your measurements.

Note: If you find it helps you keep the diagonal block seams oriented correctly, first sew groups of 4 blocks together in 2 rows of 2 as in Figure 4. Fig. 4Fig. 4 KJC J K CAC CJ

8. Measure the quilt horizontally through the center. Trim 2 Fabric S LOF strips to fit. Pin, matching centers and ends, then sew to the quilt center. Press towards the borders.

11. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed.

• A square acrylic ruler can help with cutting – if it is larger than the size needed, use tape or a marker to mark the correct size, cut along 2 edges, then rotate the ruler to cut the correct size. A removable fabric marker and scissors can also be used for fussy cutting.

• Remember to keep the edges of the squares aligned with the straight grain of the fabric for easier piecing. Cut the 8" squares first, then cut the smaller squares.

• From your fabrics, you will need to fussy cut a variety of 8" squares and 41 4" squares featuring a flower motif (in this version, Fabrics C, E, N, and P were only used for the small squares). Note that some flowers will look better off-center. To help plan your cutting, make multiple paper templates of both size squares, and move them around on a single layer of fabric (Fig. 1.) This allows you to adjust the placement before cutting into the fabric.

9. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.

1. Noting the Quilt Layout diagram (page 5), arrange all the 8" squares in 9 rows of 7 squares each in a pleasing manner.

3. Sew the rows together, pinning at seam intersections and nesting seam allowances, to complete the quilt center.
