Chrysanthemum Quilt Cutting WOF = width of fabric, cut from selvage to selvage WOFQ = width of fat quarter, usually 21" – when cutting from fat quarters, cut strips across the wider side, then subcut to size listed. From Fabrics A, I, M, O, P, and Z, cut from each: (8) 31⁄4" x 31⁄4" squares for HST units (16) 23⁄4" x 23⁄4" squares for Leaf units

***if you would like the bottom side setting triangles to show the purple portion of the rainbow as in the finished quilt image, do not use the bottom triangle from each 263⁄4" square. Instead, use that triangle to recut two triangles the same size with the same grain placement, so the long side of the triangle is parallel to the selvage along the purple portion of the print, from the remainder of the 263⁄4" x WOF strips. From Fabric L, cut: (4) 5" x 5" squares for flower centers

From Fabrics B-H, J, N, and Q-T, cut from each: (8) 5" x 5" squares for Petals

Chrysanthemum Quilt Instructions Read the instructions all the way through before beginning to sew, then refer to the Chrysanthemum Blocks Fabric Combinations table at right to organize cut pieces by block.

Block

Follow the instructions (p. 6 and 7) to make a total of 13 unique Chrysanthemum blocks, either working one block at a time or in assembly-line fashion by piecing all of the same units together.

Note that identical units are rotated when assembled into blocks, so if the orientation of directional prints in the petals is important to you, lay out all 8 squares for petals as they will appear in their final orientation in the block and mark which sides you would like as the top before sewing any units. Sew right sides together with a 1⁄4” seam allowance. Press after each seam in the direction stated or following the arrows.

Chrysanthemum Quilt 1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each Fabric W-Y, BB-EE Ring 2" x 2" and Fabric A, I, M, O, P, U, and W-EE Leaf 23⁄4" x 23⁄4" squares, keeping squares grouped together by fabric. 2. Pin a marked Ring fabric 2" x 2" square in each corner of a Center fabric 5" x 5" square with the lines oriented as shown. Sew along the lines, trim the seam allowances to 1⁄4", and press open. Make a total of 13 Center units. Fig. 1 Fig. 1

5. Pin matching marked Leaf fabric 23⁄4" x 23⁄4" squares to (2) opposite corners of each (4) remaining Petal fabric 5" x 5" squares, with the lines oriented as shown. Sew along the lines, trim seam allowances to 1⁄4" and press open. Pin a Ring fabric 23⁄4" x 23⁄4" square with the line oriented as shown in the bottom (inner) corner. Sew, trim, and press as before to complete a Leaf unit. Fig. 4 Fig. 4

4. Sew a Ring fabric 23⁄4" x 5" rectangle to the bottom of each Petal to complete a Petal Unit. Press open. Fig. 3 3. Pin a marked Fabric U 23⁄4" x 23⁄4" background square to the upper left-hand corner of (4) Petal fabric 5" x 5" squares with the line oriented as shown. Sew along the lines, trim seam allowances to 1⁄4", and press open. Pin a second Fabric U square in the adjacent corner (they will overlap at the outer edges) and sew, trim, and press as before to complete (4) Petals of each fabric combination. Fig. 2

Chrysanthemum Quilt 6. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of all 31⁄4" Fabric U squares. Pin a marked Fabric U background square to each Leaf fabric 31⁄4" x 31⁄4" square right sides together. Sew 1⁄4" from both sides of the line, trim apart on the line, and press units open. Trim to 23⁄4" square, keeping the seam centered through both corners to make 13 sets of (8) HST Units. Fig. 5

7. Arrange (1) each Fabric U 23⁄4" x 23⁄4" square and 23⁄4" x 5" rectangle, (2) matching HST Units, and (1) matching Leaf Unit together as shown. Sew the Fabric U units together, then join to the Leaf Unit to complete a Corner Unit. Make (4) of each fabric combination. Fig. 6

8. Sew the matching Center, Petal, and Corner units together in (3) rows of (3) as shown to make a Block. Make (13) unique Chrysanthemum blocks. Fig. 7

Chrysanthemum Quilt Quilt Top Assembly 9. Sew (3) Fabric U 21⁄2" x 181⁄2" sashing strips together with Fabric K 21⁄2" x 21⁄2" squares in between and at each end. Sew a Fabric U 21⁄2" x 21" sashing strip to each end to make 2 long sashing rows. Press toward Fabric K. Repeat using only (1) Fabric U 21⁄2" x 181⁄2" sashing strip in the center to make 2 short sashing rows. Fig. 8 shown below. 10. Referring to the Quilt Layout Diagram on page 9 and the finished quilt image for Fabric K print orientation, arrange the Chrysanthemum blocks and Fabric K setting triangles together into diagonal rows with a Fabric U 21⁄2" x 181⁄2" sashing strip between each block as shown. Add the long and short sashing rows between the block rows. 11. Sew the blocks, sashing, and side setting triangles together into rows. Press towards the blocks. 12. Sew the sashing rows and block rows together, matching seam intersections at the sashing. Press.

13. Add a Fabric U sashing strip, centered, to the top left and bottom right blocks, then add all 4 Fabric K corner setting triangles. Trim the ends of the sashing rows even with outer edges of the setting triangles. 14. Sew the 21⁄2" Fabric FF bias binding strips together end-to-end. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together. 15. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed.

16. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the binding to the top of the quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 17. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.

Hibiscus Quilt Instructions Read the instructions all the way through before beginning to sew, then refer to the Hibiscus Blocks Fabric Combinations table at right to organize cut pieces by block. Follow the instructions to make a total of 30 unique Hibiscus blocks, either working one block at a time or in assembly-line fashion by piecing all of the same type of units at one time. Note that identical units are rotated when assembled into blocks, so if the orientation of directional prints in the units is important to you, lay out all the pieces for one block as they will appear in their final orientation in the block (1 each top, bottom, left, and right) and mark which sides you would like as the top before sewing any units. Sew right sides together with a 1⁄4" seam allowance. Press all seam allowances open unless directed otherwise (as shown by arrows).

Hibiscus Quilt 1. Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all the Fabric W 21⁄2" x 21⁄2" background squares. Pin a marked background square to each Fabric A-U 21⁄2" x 21⁄2" square, right sides together. Sew 1 ⁄4" from both sides of the line, trim on the line, then press the resulting two HST units open. Trim to square up to 2" x 2" including seam allowance, making sure to keep the seam centered through 2 corners. Make a total of 120 HST units, grouped by fabric. Set aside. Fig. 1 Fig. 1

2. Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all the Fabric W 11⁄2" x 11⁄2" background squares. Pin a marked background square right sides together on the top 2 corners of all the Fabric Y-HH 2" x 41⁄2" rectangles with the lines oriented as shown. Sew on the lines, trim the seam allowances to 1⁄4", and press towards Fabric W. Set aside as the Outer Petal units. Fig. 2

4. Arrange (1) each Fabric W 2" x 2" background square, HST unit, and matching C unit as shown. Sew the square to the HST, then to the C unit to complete a Corner unit. Make 30 sets of 4 with matching fabrics. Hibiscus Quilt Quilt Top Assembly Follow the Quilt Layout diagram on page 10 while assembling the quilt. Press seam allowances towards the Sashing Strips. Measure the Quilt Center width and height before cutting and adding borders. Adjust border measurements where necessary to match your measurements.

12. Pin the top border strip to the upper edge of the quilt top center, matching the center and end marks. Sew from dot to dot, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam. Press. Fig. 7

13. Repeat steps 10 and 11 to measure the length, mark, and attach the right-hand side border to the quilt top center. Fig. 8

7. Arrange blocks 1-5 from left to right to make row 1 and continue to arrange the remaining blocks in numerical order in a total of 6 rows of 5 blocks each. 8. Sew the block rows together with a Fabric W 2" x 101⁄2" sashing rectangle between each, and at the beginning and the end. 9. Sew the Fabric W 2" x WOF strips together end-to-end using diagonal seams to make one continuous strip. From this, cut (7) sashing strips 591⁄2"- long (or the length of your block rows). 10. Sew the block rows together in order with a Fabric W sashing strip between each row and at the top and bottom. 11. Measure the quilt top across the width through the center. Mark the center along the top edge and 1⁄4" from each upper corner. For ease of handling, if desired you can trim the (2) Fabric I 51⁄2" x LOF strips that will be used for the top and bottom borders to about 15" longer than the width of the quilt center. Hibiscus Quilt 14. Fold the quilt top in half diagonally, right sides together, aligning the sides of the attached borders at the upper right-hand corner. Draw a 45° diagonal line from the seam allowance to the outer corner of the border strips. Sew the border strips together on this line. Open and check that the miter lays flat, then trim the seam allowance to 1⁄4". Press. Fig. 9 Fig. 9

Finishing 16. Sew together the 21⁄2" Fabric X bias binding strips end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together. 17. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed. 18. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the binding to the top of the quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 19. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place

15. Repeat steps 11 – 14 to add the remaining borders to the quilt top.

Imagination Quilt 2. Carefully remove the paper from each Unit, starting from the last section pieced and working backwards. Tip: use a ruler or similar firm straight edge to help tear the papers by placing the very edge over your line of stitching and tearing the paper up against the straight edge. This will keep the stitches from popping and help the paper tear more easily. If desired, treat each unit with Best Press or spray starch after tearing the papers; press flat using firm downward pressure. DO NOT move or twist the iron. 3. Using a removable marking pen, mark the 1 ⁄4" seam allowance in the corners of each Unit. Fig. 1

4. Sew the units into diagonal rows, matching the marked seam allowance in each and using a scant 1⁄4" seam. There will be (5) units in each row, and (5) different types of rows. Make (8) of each row. Carefully press the seams open using firm pressure, and not moving or rotating the iron. Fig. 2

Imagination Quilt 5. Sew the rows together in order, matching seam allowances carefully, to make a Diamond Unit. For best results, pin on either side of the seam allowance rather than through it. Make (8) identical Diamond Units. Fig. 3 Fig. 3

6. Using a removable marking pen, mark the seam allowances in the bottom righthand corners of one large and small Fabric P triangles as shown (the triangles are cut slightly oversized to allow for trimming after the entire quilt top has been assembled, which is why there’s no need to mark the opposite end of the seam).

Matching the seam allowances at the starting point, sew a Fabric P 251⁄2" triangle to the top left side of a diamond unit as shown, starting from the inner corner, with the Diamond Unit on the bottom so the feed dogs will help manage the bias edges. Press towards Fabric P, then sew a Fabric P 181⁄2" triangle to the adjacent side, again starting from the inner corner. Repeat to make a total of (4) A Blocks. Fig. 4

Tumble Quilt Cutting Note: if using a FQ Bundle for all prints, Fabric D and E will not be fussy cut exactly as in the quilt image. To fussy cut Fabric D and E exactly as shown, you will need 1⁄2 yard of each. Placement diagrams are specific to the direction of the motif; WOF (Width of Fabric- the longer side of the fat quarter) or LOF (Length of Fabric- the shorter side, also the selvage edge). Since fabric pieces will have bias edges once cut, you may wish to starch all fabrics before cutting. Handle cut pieces gently so bias edges will not stretch. Fabrics A-E, and L-U, cut from each: (2) 60° diamonds using the Diamond template/ruler, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1

Tumble Quilt Instructions All seam allowances are 1⁄4" and pieces are sewn right sides together. Press seam allowances open unless otherwise stated. 1. Sew the Fabric Y-EE diamonds together with the Fabric V A sashing pieces to make the sashing rows as shown. Press. Fig. 8 2. Referring to the Quilt Layout diagram on page 10, arrange the Fabric A-J, and L-U 60° diamonds and all the Fabric K Setting Triangles together in diagonal rows, using the quilt image for fabric placement. Keep all the diamonds oriented in the same direction, and place a Fabric V B sashing piece between each diamond and between the Fabric K triangles and adjacent diamonds. 3. Sew the pieces from step 2 together into diagonal rows. Press.

4. Sew the large diamond rows together with a sashing row between each row as shown. Add the (2) remaining Fabric K Corner Setting Triangles to the upper left and bottom right corner to complete the quilt top. If desired, trim 1⁄4" from the points of the small diamonds to square up, or wait until after quilting is completed to square up the quilt. 5. Sew together the 21⁄2" Fabric K binding strips end-to-end using diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together. 6. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed. 7. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the binding to the top of the quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 8. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.
