Heart Beats Quilt Prep Print the template patterns on page 6 at 100% actual size. Trace onto template plastic, transfer all markings, and cut out on the outer solid line.

Cutting WOF = Width of Fabric Note: Alternate triangles 180° while cutting (Fig.1). Fig. 1 Fig. 1

Fabrics AD and AE, cut from each: (1) 61⁄2" x WOF; sub-cut (5) triangles and (1) half-triangle Fabrics AF and AG, cut from each: (1) 61⁄2" x WOF; sub-cut (5) triangles and (1) reversed half-triangle Fabrics AH, AI, AJ, and AK, cut from each: (1) 61⁄2" x WOF; sub-cut (4) triangles (1) half-triangle (1) reversed half-triangle Fabric AL, bias-cut: Enough 21⁄2"-wide bias strips to make 300" of bias binding

To cut reversed half-triangles, flip the template over to cut with the text side down. Label cut pieces with fabric letter identifier for easier construction. Depending on how efficiently triangles are cut from Fabrics A and B, 1 additional WOF strip may be needed, and has been allowed for in the yardage listed on page 2. Fabrics A and B, cut from each: (7) 61⁄2" x WOF; sub-cut (99) triangles (3) half-triangles (3) reversed half-triangles Fabrics C–AC, cut from each: (1) 61⁄2" x WOF; sub-cut (6) triangles Copyright© 2022

Instructions Note: All seam allowances are 1⁄4" unless otherwise noted. Sew pieces right sides together. Press seam allowances open unless otherwise indicated. 1. Referring to Row 1 in the Quilt Layout diagram (page 5) for fabric placement, arrange (16) Fabric B triangles, (3) each Fabrics AE, C, Q, J, and S triangles, (2) Fabric AF triangles, and (1) half-triangle and (1) reversed Fabric B half-triangles in a single horizontal row. Sew the triangles and half-triangles together along adjacent edges. Press.

2. Refer to the Quilt Layout diagram (page 5) to arrange triangles and half-triangles for each additional row. Sew the triangles and half-triangles in each row together along adjacent edges. Press. 3. Sew the rows together along adjacent edges, noting that the upper points of the triangles in each row align vertically with the upper points of the triangles in the row below it. Press the seam allowances in one direction.

Finishing 4. Sew the bias-cut 21⁄2" Fabric AL binding strips together end-to-end. Press the seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together. 5. Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the quilt top after quilting is completed. 6. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to ¼" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 7. Turn the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place.

Just Dandy Quilt Additional Requirements • • • • • •

100% cotton thread, including thread to match Fabric S if topstitching the bias stems 91" x 91" (2.31m x 2.31m) batting 1 ⁄2" bias tape maker Lightweight copy paper, newsprint, or vellum for foundation patterns Template plastic Optional: - Add-A-Quarter ruler (this special ruler has a lip underneath to keep it from slipping when trimming fabrics during foundation piecing, making it much easier to use than a standard rotary cutting ruler) - Fabric glue stick or glue in a squeeze bottle - Spray starch or starch alternative, such as Best Press

Preparation 1. Print 1 copy each of the template patterns and foundation patterns on pages 12-13 at 100% on copy paper and check printout size for accuracy. 2. On your desired paper for foundation piecing, print 39 copies of page 14, to yield 117 of Foundation 1 and 39 each of Foundations 2, 3, and 4. 3. For Template 6, tape both pieces together to make a complete Template 6 pattern. Trace template patterns 1-6 onto plastic template material, cut out on the outer solid line (note that for Template 6, the dashed line won’t be used until after blocks are pieced), and label each template with the name and mark the grainlines. If you’re a beginning foundation piecer, mark the seam allowances Copyright© 2022

(or at least the seam intersections) to piece the units accurately more easily. For those with less experience foundation piecing, it is recommended to sew a test block using scraps to determine if pre-cutting the foundation patches a bit larger will make for easier placement -there is enough yardage allowed to cut the 11⁄4" pieces at least 1⁄4" wider.

Cutting From Fabrics A-K, M, and N, cut from each: (18) 11⁄4" x 13⁄4" for Foundation 1 (18) 11⁄4" x 3" for Foundations 2, 3, and 4 (3) Template 5, referring to the finished quilt image or quilt layout diagram to rotate the template for each cut if you want to cut so that prints will all be oriented the same way when the quilt top is complete From Fabrics O, P, R, T-Z, AB, AC, and AD, cut from each: (18) 11⁄4" x 13⁄4" for Foundation 1 (18) 11⁄4" x 3" for Foundations 2, 3, and 4 From Fabric L, cut: (9) 31⁄2" x WOF for outer border From Fabric Q, cut: (2) 14" x WOF; cut (4) 14" x 14" squares, then sub-cut each twice diagonally to yield (16) side setting triangles (1) 135⁄8" x WOF; cut (2) 135⁄8" x 135⁄8" squares, then sub-cut each once diagonally to yield (4) corner setting triangles.

From Fabric S, cut: (13) 1"-wide bias strips for stem appliqués Note: Bias strips at a 45° angle from the yardage listed should be at least 16" long. From Fabric AA, cut: Enough 21⁄2"-wide bias strips** to make 350" of bias binding From Fabric AE, cut: (5) 111⁄4" x WOF; cut (39) Template 6, rotating template after each cut for most efficient use of fabric. Save template after cutting; it will be trimmed and used to mark the bias stem placement. (6) 91⁄2" x WOF; cut (21) 91⁄2" x 91⁄2" squares (5) 31⁄2" x WOF; cut (78) of Template 2 and (39) each of Template 3 and Template 4 From Fabrics AF-AI, and AL-AP, cut from each: (3) 11⁄2" x WOF; cut (39) 11⁄2" x 3" for Foundations 2, 3, and 4 (1) 3" x WOF; cut (9) Template 1, rotating template after each cut for most efficient use of fabric. From Fabrics AJ and AK, cut from each: (6) 11⁄2" x WOF; cut (78) 11⁄2" x 3" for Foundations 2, 3, and 4 (1) 3" x WOF; cut (18) Template 1, rotating template after each cut for most efficient use of fabric.

Just Dandy Quilt Instructions Notes: •

All seam allowances are 1⁄4" (.64cm). Pieces are sewn right sides together. Press after each seam.

Basic knowledge of foundation paper piecing (FPP) is needed to make this quilt. Diagrams show the right (finished) side of foundations, which is a mirror image of the printed side of the foundation patterns. Pay careful attention to the paper piecing foundations for proper placement and order of fabric. Refer to the Fabric Key below and the individual tables for each foundation to guide you. Paper Piecing Tutorials can be found at: https://staceyinstitches.com/2014/11/29/a-paper-piecing-tutorial/

Foundations 1. Using your preferred method of paper piecing, make (9) of Foundation 1 in each fabric combination listed in the table at right, using the 11⁄4" x 13⁄4" pieces in the odd and even sections as directed. Fig. 1

Just Dandy Quilt Quilt Top Assembly

Finishing

Follow the Quilt Layout diagram (page 11) while assembling the quilt. Press seam allowances in each row in the same direction, and alternate direction from row to row so seams will nest. Measure the Quilt Center width and height before cutting and adding borders and adjust border measurements if necessary to match your measurements.

13. Sew together the 21⁄2" Fabric AA bias binding strips end-to-end. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together. 14. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed. 15. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew the binding to the top of the quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12" from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where the loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4" and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt. 16. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.

10. Arrange the Flower Blocks, Stem Blocks, Fabric Q corner and side setting triangles, and remaining Fabric AE 91⁄2" x 91⁄2" squares together into diagonal rows as shown in the layout diagram, rotating the Flower and Stem Blocks as needed to match the diagram. 11. Sew the triangles, blocks, and squares into rows, then sew the diagonal rows together and add the two remaining corner setting triangles to complete the quilt center. 12. Sew the Fabric L 31⁄2" x WOF strips together end-to-end and cut (2) top/bottom borders 827⁄8" long and (2) side borders 767⁄8" long. Sew the shorter borders to the sides of the quilt, matching ends and centers. Press towards Fabric L, then sew the longer borders to the top and bottom.

Lend a Paw Quilt Cutting

From Fabrics A, and J, cut from each: (2) 41⁄2" x WOF, subcut (16) 41⁄2" x 41⁄2"

From Fabric H, cut: (2) 211⁄8" x WOF; subcut (4) 211⁄8" x 211⁄8" squares, then cut each square diagonally twice to yield (12) side setting triangles (1) 107⁄8" x WOF; subcut (2) 107⁄8" x 107⁄8" squares. With both squares oriented so racoons are right-reading, cut 1 square diagonally from the top left to bottom right and cut the other square once diagonally in the opposite direction to yield (4) corner setting triangles.

From Fabrics B, C, G, and M, cut from each: (1) 41⁄2" x WOF, subcut (8) 41⁄2" x 41⁄2"

From Fabric K, cut: (2) 21⁄2" x WOF; subcut (20) 21⁄2" x 21⁄2" for cornerstones

From Fabrics D, E, I, and N, cut from each: (1) 41⁄2" x WOF, subcut (6) 41⁄2" x 41⁄2"

From Fabric L, cut: (2) 21⁄2" x WOF; subcut (25) 21⁄2" x 21⁄2" for block centers

From Fabric F, cut: (2) 41⁄2" x WOF, subcut (12) 41⁄2" x 41⁄2"

From Fabrics O and Z, cut from each: (3) 27⁄8" x WOF; subcut (32) 27⁄8" x 27⁄8" for HST units

Note: The pattern uses 2-at-a-time HST (halfsquare triangle units) cut 7⁄8" larger than the finished unit size. If you prefer to have more room to trim and square up your HST units, cut all 27⁄8" strips and squares at 3" instead (or your preferred measurement). The fabric requirements allow for enough yardage to cut 3" strips and squares.

From Fabrics Q, T, U, and X, cut from each: (2) 27⁄8" x WOF; subcut (16) 27⁄8" x 27⁄8" for HST units From Fabric R, cut: (2) 27⁄8" x WOF; subcut (24) 27⁄8" x 27⁄8" for HST units From Fabrics S, V, W and Y, cut from each: (1) 27⁄8" x WOF; subcut (12) 27⁄8" x 27⁄8" for HST units From Fabric AA, cut: (49) 21⁄2" x WOF; subcut (12) 21⁄2" x 301⁄2" long sashing strips (8) 21⁄2" x 161⁄2" short sashing strips (32) 21⁄2" x 141⁄2" block row sashing strips (100) 21⁄2" x 61⁄2" block sashing strips From Fabric AB, cut: Enough 21⁄2"-wide bias strips to make 380" (9.6m) of bias binding OR if you prefer to make continuous bias binding, cut a 34" square

From Fabric P, cut: (7) 21⁄2" x WOF; subcut (100) 21⁄2" x 21⁄2" (16) 27⁄8" x WOF; subcut (200) 27⁄8" x 27⁄8" for HST units

Mini Menagerie Quilt Cutting Read the instructions all the way through before beginning. This block requires an accurate 1⁄4" seam allowance for the points to align– you may wish to make a block or partial block from scraps first to test your seam allowance. You may also choose to cut some HSTs and QSTs 1⁄8" larger than listed and trim to size. TIP: Press fabrics well with spray starch or a starch alternative, such as Best Press, and let dry before cutting to keep fabric from distorting or stretching. Handle pieces with bias edges gently and store flat. WOF = width of fabric, cut from selvage to selvage HST = half-square triangle, from a square cut once diagonally (bias on the long side) QST = quarter-square triangle, from a square cut twice diagonally (bias on the short sides) From Fabric A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, L, and M, cut from each: (1) 9" x 9" square (4) 43⁄4" x 43⁄4" squares, cut on both diagonals to yield (16) quarter-square triangles for outer points

Group cut fabric pieces according to the Mini Menagerie Blocks table and then follow Steps 1-6 below to make 12 unique blocks. Work one block at a time or chain piece all like units to work assembly-line fashion.

1. Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of each Fabric Q-AA 3" square. Pin a marked 3" square in each corner of a center fabric 91⁄2" x 91⁄2" square. Sew along the diagonal lines as shown, trim seam allowances to 1⁄4", and press open to complete a Center Unit. Fig. 1

Fig. 1

For each block you will need the following Fabric P (background) pieces, listed in construction order: (8) 43⁄4" QSTs (4 for QST units, 4 for Triangle and reversed Triangle units) (8) 43⁄8" HSTs (4 for Triangle and reversed Triangle units, 4 for Side units) (4) 51⁄2" HSTs (outer corners) Mini Menagerie Blocks Block #

Mini Menagerie Quilt 6. Sew (2) matching Side Units to opposite sides of a Center Unit, making sure the center unit has the fabric print correctly oriented, and pinning at seam intersections to make sure the seams that make up the inner and outer points will be aligned. Sew (2) matching Top/Bottom Units to the remaining sides, again making sure the points will align. Trim the excess background triangle fabric even with raw edges as shown. To complete the block, sew (4) background 51⁄2" triangles, centered, as shown to the 4 angled corners. Square up to 16" x 16" including seam allowances (151⁄2" x 151⁄2" finished). Fig. 6

Quilt Top Assembly Follow the Quilt Layout diagram (page 8) while assembling the quilt. Press seam allowances towards the Sashing Strips. Measure the Quilt Center width and height before cutting and adding borders and adjust border measurements if necessary to match your measurements. 7. Referring to the layout diagram for orientation and placement, arrange the blocks in (4) rows of (3) blocks each, with a Fabric O block sashing strip between each block and on both ends of each row. 8. Sew the blocks and sashing strips together into rows. 9. Sew the Fabric O 21⁄2" x WOF strips together end-to-end and cut (5) 21⁄2" x 55" sashing strips (or the length of your block rows). Sew the block rows together with sashing strips between rows and at the top and bottom. 10. Sew the Fabric K 37⁄8" x WOF strips together end-to-end with diagonal seams. Trim seam allowance to 1⁄4". Cut (2) border strips 721⁄2"-long and (2) border strips 613⁄4"-long. Matching ends and centers, sew the longer border strips to the left and right sides of the quilt. Press, then sew the remaining border strips to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top.

11. Sew together the 21⁄2" Fabric N bias binding strips end-to-end. Press seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together. 12. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed. 13. 14. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.
