Both inbound and outbound logistics companies supporting American's ExpediteTC service will utilize the new CRT room. It is a fully monitored and alarmed facility, where the standard operating temperature will be set to maintain passive products at +59°F to +77°F (+15°C to +25°C). Euro Scan software is used to monitor precise temperatures within the facility, which will provide real-time information to the American operations team, and will be used for reporting purposes. If you could change anything about the industry as a whole, what would it be? For starters, I’d have more people selling value rather than cheap nonsense. The major disappointment is that there is so much disgruntlement in the industry, caused by artificially low pricing that destroys service. Yet people keep buying it. Once again technology can help in providing the access to company systems and procedures remotely via mobile devices or using an alternative site from which operations can continue. In my role as Chairman of AFSS I often get to see demonstrations of new technology and new systems being developed. I’m also frequently approached by developers wishing to demonstrate some of their new projects on which they are engaged. At our AGM this year we were able to see a presentation from one member who has developed a system which provides an ability for any organisation to maintain their operation remotely should there be disruption of any type within their business. A number of AFSS members have been actively engaged in providing fallback functionality for the submission of import and export declarations via the CCS-UK Community Service. Other CSPs in the Ports have also developed improved Disaster Recovery processes and enhanced reporting to both HMRC and Border Force. Your software or system provider should be included in the development of your business continuity plans and should be able to provide you with advice and guidance on the best ways to safeguard your IT services. AFSS members will be only too happy to assist you in examining how to safeguard your business against the disruption that might result when your systems cannot be accessed for reasons beyond your control. My advice is to prepare and plan for the unexpected disruption to your business and routinely practice your continuity plans in collaboration with your systems providers. AFSS membership is open to any company providing software or related services to companies within the fields of freight, transportation, warehousing and international trade. Members are required to follow the guidelines contained in our Code of Conduct. Gordon Tutt, Chairman, AFSS FORWARDER magazine

Unmatched Ability to Identify Explosive Odors With an unparalleled sense of smell, bomb dogs have a unique ability to sniff out odors in parts-per-trillion. Canines also smell in layers, which allows them to recognise and discern an individual explosive ingredient even when that explosive is masked by other odors. The best EDCs are imprinted and trained on all five families of explosives, in addition to homemade explosives (HMEs) like TATP, HMTD, Potassium Chlorate, Ammonium Nitrate and Urea Nitrate—always live, pure and never 'cocktailed' to ensure recognition accuracy in the field. Expedient & Unobtrusive Explosive Screening As a practical matter, the modern technology used to screen large quantities of air cargo with the speed necessary to satisfy the worldwide supply chain simply does not exist—and may not exist for some time. A properly imprinted and trained EDC can screen a typical Unit Loading Device(ULD) in minutes, not hours, with minimised interruptions to business. Full Container Screening Capabilities Canines allow for the effective screening of shipment types that may prove more challenging to screen using conventional technological methods. EDCs are one of the few tools to effectively screen entire pallets, containers or ULDs containing multiple types of goods without the need to break them down to individual components: this translates into considerable labor, operational and time efficiencies. Align supply chain operations with overall business strategy Supply chain execution has become a competitive differentiator in many industries. By integrating supply chain capabilities into product development and marketing strategies, organisations can often create new revenue sources or business models. But it’s rarely possible to effectively build supply chain into high level strategy unless the supply chain processes are well-defined, managed, and optimised. This kind of process management requires great data. Ultimately the operational KPIs used for the supply chain should be linked with overall strategic objectives to keep all parts of the organisations aligned with the strategic plan. Improving your supply chain visibility can offer many potential improvements to business performance with quantifiable return on investment. The Congestion Charge has arguably played a role in suppressing traffic demand in central London, but FTA has always argued that it is a blunt tool which fails to recognise the essential role that freight plays in serving London's businesses, residents and visitors. New and emerging technology could play a pivotal part in providing a more sophisticated system that accounts for the essential role of the vehicle and the time of day and incentivises cleaner vehicles. Natalie Chapman, Head of Policy for London, FTA

London Mayor Sadiq Khan says he aims to reduce freight traffic in the capital by 10% by 2026. FTA believes this is an unrealistic target given the needs of London’s growing population and the Mayor’s agenda on demanding HGVs change shape to increase direct vision – a change which may cost load space, thus requiring more vehicles on London’s roads. Ms Chapman added:

It costs so much to deliver into London that

the road freight industry is already highly load efficient. There may be some benefits from further consolidation we can gain, but these will be outweighed by the needs of London’s larger population. The real gains in traffic management will come from private car use – if car users can be enabled or encouraged to switch to public transport, cycling or walking then London’s transport network could become exponentially more efficient.

EUROPA ACCELERATES

ACQUISITION AMBITIONS F ollowing its most successful year to date, leading independent

logistics operator Europa Worldwide Group has officially announced it is on the acquisition trail.

Europa Worldwide Group is a privately-owned operator which

delivers air, sea, road and warehousing services, employing around 650 people across 11 sites in the UK plus Hong Kong and is represented in 100 countries. The business was acquired in 2013 by Managing Director Andrew Baxter and, following a bold front-end restructuring which has seen turnover

increase to £116m, the company now intends to expand through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions. To begin with, the company is looking to buy a £20m-£60m turnover freight business. Andrew said:

To be honest, we are pretty open minded in

terms of acquisition targets. We are looking to develop all of our international markets, therefore the first acquisition may be air, sea or road orientated. We are also pretty open as to whether the business is a regional or national operator, or where it is based in the UK. As long as the business adds strength to our market position in one of our core sectors, then we are happy. Andrew Baxter, Managing Director, Europa Worldwide Group

Europa Worldwide Group’s turnover has seen a £20m increase on the previous year, while profit before tax has increased to £2.3m

from a loss of £1.6m in 2015. All divisions of the business – Air, Sea, Showfreight, Road and Warehouse – have all seen turnover growth respectively too. Andrew added:

We’re in a very strong position now and so I

believe the time is right to start to acquire businesses which fit well within our operating model and which will improve our market position. We believe that we will continue to have strong organic growth of around 20% across the business this year. In the Road division, during the last two years we have been focused upon building daily services from Dartford to around 30 European hubs. Now that that project is nearing completion, we are planning to start developing additional lines to the continent directly from our 10 regional depots. If for example we were to acquire a regional operator, with existing direct lines, then this would help speed up this process. We see the opportunity to make multiple acquisitions of this nature in the next few years. In addition, we want to strengthen our Air and Sea activities. Therefore, again we are interested in those opportunities. Projected turnover for the business for 2017 is £140m, with strong growth trajectories established across all areas of the business. Now that things have settled down post restructuring, we have management capacity to focus upon new projects. Therefore the next logical step is to look for sensible bolt-on acquisitions. Our success is a result of the bold decisions we made three years ago. We made the biggest single investment in Europa’s history when we opened our £30m 1hub in Dartford, which is the UK’s largest European groupage hub, and we invested nearly £2m in completely overhauling our IT system by introducing our own, Leonardo TMS software. Our experience of restructuring and all of the challenges associated with it makes us well placed to deal with the subtle process of integrating new businesses into our group. Rob Ross, Finance Director, Europa Worldwide Group

Europa Worldwide Group now employs around 650 people across 11 sites in the UK plus Hong Kong and is represented in 100 countries. FORWARDER magazine
