WELCOME TO FORWARDER... A WORD FROM

THE EDITOR

T

his month we will be looking at abnormal loads and project cargo. The repetitive rhetoric regarding Brexit and other ongoing forwarding issues will follow us into

the month. However, we shall be looking into the influence and necessity of project cargo in the industry, both at the environmental level and economic. Our UK focus is the power-house areas within the North East. The north-east of England acts as a hub for many businesses to use as a base for distribution, rather than the nation’s capital. Goods lifted (HGV only) within the UK increased by 15% to 1.89 billion tonnes – a high since records began in 1990. We will also be looking at our European neighbours in the Benelux region. Brexit will, of course, influence the transportation of abnormal loads throughout the region, but will this effect be negative or positive? With negotiations ongoing and uncertainty hanging over several industries, we will be exploring the issues around this and hopefully answering some of the questions you may have.

the innovative nature of forwarding means we will see more and more of this. Supply chain intrigue after the KFC blunder has led to many in the industry commentating on the overall state of the sector. Is it doomed to failure? Is this a sign of things to come? Will I ever not be able to get my chicken again? Of course, I'm being flippant. Realistically, there is no damage to the supply chain, and there is plenty of chicken to go around. Whilst many have stated that the blunder could have been easily avoided and the reputation damage to KFC and DHL could be long lasting amongst both consumers and franchisees, others have seen that a mixture of rectification, warranty, indemnity and a clear incident response plan and communications strategy can sort out any supply chain mix up. weight out-of-gauge (OOG) project shipment from Shanghai (China) to Fredrikstad (Norway).

The other 20’FR unit arrived in Norway per the initial schedule and was railed to its destination.

The shipment consisted of submarine optical fiber cable drums that had a combined weight of 50 tons including tare and divided in 2 units measuring 3.9m X 3.9m X 2.6m (39.546 CBM / 34 tons) on a 40’ Flat Rack and 2.6m X 2.6m X 2.2m (14.872 CBM / 8.5 tons) on a 20’ Flat Rack. The cable will be used off-shore in the Oil Sector in the Northern part of Norway. At origin, AIF Global Logistics handled the booking, arranged the customs and port formalities and secured an ATA carnet as per the cargo plan. As there is no direct service, the cargo had to be transshipped via Rotterdam Port, from where the heaviest 40’FR was rolled out 2 times due to heavy congestion at the Port. With an enormous deadline pressure, Norwegian Forwarding had to find an alternative solution to deliver the cargo on time. They managed to release the cargo during the transshipment in Rotterdam and stripped the drums using special cranes, then they barged them from Rotterdam

Multimodal for me is the UK’s leading Freight Forwarding & Logistics trade show. Last year was superb for us as we share the same target audience with the show. We are passionate about marketing and growth so it’s a fantastic opportunity to meet with our clients once a year at the NEC. We will continue to support multimodal as we see great value in networking worth fellow freight professionals that are passionate about marketing their services. Craig Headford, Managing Director, Freight Media Ltd.

Our previous ventures at Multimodal have provided us with in-depth knowledge and insight which we’ve used throughout our group companies. There is no better event to get this level of discussion than at Multimodal, It’s a great opportunity for us to meet clients face-to-face, in a professional environment. As an advisory firm who focuses solely on the Freight & Logistics sector, we see tangible value from attending such an event. David Roberts, Management Consultant, Freight Mergers

Multimodal offers the Headford Group another chance to stand out from the recruitment crowd. This is another event that allows us to get out of the office and get involved with the industry in more depth which increases our footprint, and promotes our business as one that both clients and potential candidates can trust, regardless of the service they require from us. How did you find yourself getting into the world of freight forwarding? On leaving school at 16, I joined Aston Villa as an apprentice and later signed semi-professional forms at Burton Albion. TREVOR SAYS... Seriously, our drivers are our ambassadors on the road...

This investment has reduced the threat of uninvited stowaways entering our trailers at Calais and has made it near impossible for thefts of our customers’ products to take place from the solidsided trailers. In an effort to reduce our costs over the years we could have opted to use cheaper East European hauliers to operate our line-haul requirements across the Channel but that would have compromised our reputation and diluted the strict 'in house' controls that we have in place. Our reluctance to take this cheaper option is certainly paying dividends – a fact demonstrated by our growing customer base.

Q Q A

Why is security such a significant aspect of your distribution service?

We are very conscious of our responsibilities as a truck operator when it comes to climate change and the environment. We operate the latest Euro 6 trucks and incab telematics monitor the progress of our driver training programme – that improves efficiency all round.

MOVE IT LIKE...YOU

I was delighted to appear in the FORWARDER magazine ‘Move it Like’ showcase earlier this

year. The opportunity to speak candidly about the success of our company, my influence on that, and the ingredients that contribute to our continued success was appreciated. NNR is a global ‘premium brand’ that, although established for over a 100 years in Asia, is not particularly well known in the UK. The feature in Forwarder Magazine offered the stage for us to future promote our business. The moniker ‘secret assassin’ and ‘largest company you’ve never heard of’ no longer suits the brand and size of our global group, therefore features like ‘Move it Like’ in a classy glossy such as FORWARDER are the perfect vehicle to help change that perception. Now I’ve recovered from the

marginal discomfort of a little more attention than normal (!), I can reflect that it provided a strong and personal message that many of our key partners and customers read and responded favourably too. Lee Griffiths, NNR

It was fantastic to feature in the FORWARDER magazine

‘Move it Like’ recently. The quality of the article and insightfulness of the questions gave T15 a great opportunity to be seen in the best light possible. We are a young, growing business and this forum has enabled us to promote our value to a wider network, within a sector that is going through significant change. I would summarise FORWARDER magazine as a quality publication that brings networks and partnerships together for the greater good. Matt Perry, Transition15

DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT... In 2017 I was proud to be included in the popular FORWARDER feature 'Move It Like'. As a leading publication within the

logistics industry, FORWARDER's unique feature presented an ideal opportunity to discuss my journey as a global air freight

expert and highlight how Ligentia continues to meet our customers' requirements through customised solutions. I found the process rewarding and my relationship with FORWARDER has continued to develop as my career has progressed to a global role. I would highly recommend being part of a future 'Move it Like' feature to anyone seeking successful exposure within the logistics industry.

The law of abnormal When transporting abnormal loads, laws and regulations can differ from country to country, making sure you know exactly what to expect and where is vital. For example, in the UK the law requires that if your vehicle and load movements exceed standard dimensions, then you need to pre-notify the police, highway and bridge authorities. The length of notice you need to give and whether an attendant is compulsory hinges on the vehicle dimensions and weight.

What qualifies as abnormal? As a rough guide when thinking about the requirements for abnormal in the UK comes from the following list of criteria. A weight of more than 44,000 kilograms. An axle load of more than 10,000 kilograms for. A single non-driving axle and 11,500 kilograms for a single driving axle. A width of more than 2.9 metres. A rigid length of more than 18.65 metres. If you need any further guidance on exactly what qualifies the transportation of an abnormal load, you can find all the information you need at www.gov.uk. Planning, planning, planning Billions of dollars of project-critical equipment is shipped around the world annually. High levels of risk are associated with these shipments due to the nature of the abnormality, transport logistics, and tight timeframes. Planning your route and exactly what needs to be in place ahead of time will make sure that these billions of dollars are not wasted. Hire experts who have dealt with similar cargo, or the sector in general, and you’ll see that costs for single parts are affordable, there is almost no height limit on container vessels and on top of this, weekly departures to make sure you are running on schedule. Both countries are also big importers of products from the UK, which represented 3.9% of the Netherlands’ GDP and 3.5% of Belgium’s GDP in 20151. These products are primarily machinery and transport equipment (including cars), chemicals and pharmaceutical products, manufactured goods, fuel and gas and food products2 . Not all of these goods will have been produced in the Benelux or get used/sold there: the Rotterdam effect, and to a lesser extent, the role of Zeebrugge and Antwerp as big transit hubs for European trade with Asia, should be factored in. Will this change with Brexit? Although Brexit could potentially see the emergence of more direct maritime routes to the UK, it is unlikely to result in a drastic reduction of volumes transiting through Rotterdam or Antwerp. The UK is and will also likely remain a key market for the Benelux countries, and

the fact that you can expect complete transparency of the journey, geo-location technology for easy tracking, time saving, real-time visibility of jobs and available drivers, decreasing empty backloads, decreasing cost and charge for same-day delivery, increase business opportunities and automated notifications mean that you have an app to increase productivity across all sectors of your logistics business. With innovations like Loadie changing the landscape, there are no better people to ask than Karl, Chris and Jamie, the minds behind the app that exemplifies the way we are beginning to view technology in the industry.

How will apps and immediate responses through technology change the logistics landscape in the future? I think the level of transparency and immediacy of applications is a game changer in the industry, from both a customer service and satisfaction point of view, as well as increasing efficiency. The ability to track loads in real time on a map as well as communicate directly with drivers and customers in real time makes this type of technological advancement inevitable. Customers are not left in the dark as to when their loads will arrive and can co-ordinate their warehouses more effectively, this will also lead to less enquiries

n today’s world, there is a plethora of events and expos to attend.

Events like these bring professionals together from the same industry to discuss how the market is performing and the future

plans for growth. When guests and exhibitors attend with an open mind, these types of expos are a great way to boost business visibility, learn about trends in the industry and form new relationships. The team at Freight Mergers works with acquisitive, growthorientated, private and listed companies from the freight and logistics sector, with transaction experience in private company sales, fund raising and acquisition sourcing. We offer services on the buy- and sell-side of domestic and international transactions, helping facilitate shareholder strategies in an independent and personal manner. Freight Mergers works closely with private equity investors, management teams and external advisors ensuring that they meet their commercial objectives. We see the week at Multimodal as a chance to enhance our reputation within the Freight sector. We hope our conversations leave attendees remembering who we are, what our values are and how we can benefit their business during the acquisition or sale process. It’s not often you can spend three days with clients from various verticals and specialisms under just one roof and we certainly look forward to conversing with new and existing clients during the week. NEW MARKETS

Amazon is taking over from Google as a product search engine, and what they have done well is wait and market themselves as a simple, de-cluttered marketplace. If you own any sort of business, looking at Amazon's business model and approach to marketing is a must. Due to the resurgence from the online platform, they have been able to corner markets such as voice assistance and staffless shops, instead of joining in the already saturated phone markets etc., allowing them, uniquely, to advertise effectively using a range of techniques. This has pushed e-commerce retailers to adapt their attribution models to understand that new audiences gained on social media tend to visit a site, engage and eventually purchase. This doesn’t happen every time, but by marketing the right service to the right audience, the process becomes easier. Looking at marketing models from leaders in various industries is an effective way of developing your marketing in a smaller company.
