Dear people, In this world there are many things that hold us down, that prevent us from being our best selves. Sometimes we don’t even realize it, like if you have friends who constantly dump their stuff on you. And sometimes we are our own problem. So, how can you be free from societal influences? Be a free soul —know yourself ? My answer— do whatever you want. Starting a fashion magazine has been a dream of mine. This is a space that will be covered with unique fashion, real talk about life, and social justice talk to educate. Cheers to following your dreams,

Understanding my Power “My struggle is a valid one, and I won’t let you forget it, or make me feel like less of a person for admitting to and accepting my weaknesses.” Candice Jackson
Candice is from Metro Detroit and she is in her junior at Amherst College. This spread is shot and modeled by her. https://candicejacksonphotography.wordpress.com/
“I love self portraits. At first, photographing myself seemed odd. Who would want to see pictures of me? I didn't think anyone would, and so I kept them to myself. My photos became a kind of journal, as they were various accounts of the happenings in my life. Though they may not express it, I can easily look back on a set of photos and remember where I was in my life at that point, both physically and emotionally. When I started college, I decided to push myself and begin to show my work. I got so much positive feedback, and it only pushed me to create more. There is not a lot of black representation in the media right now, and I feel as though I am beginning to find ways of combatting that in my own way. There are times when I get anxious before sharing my photos, wondering if I am taking up too much space or if everyone is tired of me. But then I remind myself that I AM allowed to take up space, my experiences and how I express them ARE valid, and I WILL be noticed. Candice Jackson
“If my Drew House Project has showed me anything, it’s that I am not alone. I am not alone in the midst of stress and feigned perfection on this campus. I am not alone when it feels like my classes are trying to do nothing more than swallow me whole. I am not alone even when it feels like no one else could possibly understand. I am not alone. It’s nights like these that underscore the importance of community, of struggle, of empowerment. Yes, I am a beautiful, strong, black woman, but I cry, too, and that’s okay. It is all of my emotions, all of my experiences, that come together to comprise me, not just the “good” or “easy” ones. My struggle is a valid one, and I won’t let you forget it, or make me feel like less of a person for admitting to and accepting my weaknesses.” Candice Jackson
